Greetings from Dana Point

I can confirm that Brian Cashman has arrived at the GM Meetings. Why? Because he was on the same flight from Newark. C-Money and loyal assistant Billy Eppler were on the plane. Jean Afterman will be here as well.

Not sure if Joe Girardi is going to make an appearance or not. Managers usually wait until the Winter Meetings.

And a hideous flight it was. It was delayed for about an hour by a mechanical problem “that should be able to get fixed” according to the pilot. Then once we finally got in the air, it was roughly 102 degrees on the plane and the movies were Mama Mia and Get Smart.

Fortunately I had my iPod and the latest Robert Parker Spenser novel to kill time.

We’ll blog at you early and often from the St. Regis Resort at Monarch Beach.

mama MIA and get smart ahh dry films lol

But yeah hopefully some move is made in these meetings.

    Pete,

You didn’t drop truth serum into Cash’s milk?

Thanks in advance for the news & notes to come.

When the meetings are over, you should head to Hawaii and get a first-hand looks at Brackman & Bleich. :)

  3. Ed - looking forward to 2009 November 3rd, 2008 at 4:04 am

Pete, please inform us if Cashman made some GM drunk and gave up let’s say Loney for Melky. lol :)

  4. iYankees November 3rd, 2008 at 4:05 am

Hey, well, at least you had the steady visual of Anne Hathaway in Get Smart, right?

I don’t see a reason to overpay for Loney. Besides, the Dodgers will need a first baseman back. In order to get full value from the Dodgers, I suggest Loney, Proctor, Martin and Kemp for Ransom, Rasner, Cabrera and Cervelli. NNY also gets some cash back to help pay some of the salary.

This is tied into my Houston trade, which was Berkman, Oswalt and Wesley Wright for Betemit, Igawa, Proctor and after resigning him (Chad Moeller).

  6. GreenBeret7 November 3rd, 2008 at 4:46 am

There would also be cash involved. Houston send cash back to offset half of the Houston salaries. It helps all three teams. NYY even has to give up the extra player.

  7. SJ44 November 3rd, 2008 at 4:57 am

    GreenBeret7,

I, as you may well know, have many connections in the baseball industry. My sources in the Dodgers’ FO staff tell me that there is no way Colleti would pull the trigger on that deal. Try starting with A-Jax, Hughes, Melancon, Betances, Montero, etc.

  8. Billy November 3rd, 2008 at 5:09 am

“This is tied into my Houston trade, which was Berkman, Oswalt and Wesley Wright for Betemit, Igawa, Proctor and after resigning him (Chad Moeller).”

Scott Proctor is on the Dodgers. He was traded for Betemit in July 2007. So it’s kinda hard to structure a trade when 1 of the players isn’t even under the team’s control to trade. Nice try though.

  9. Jeff November 3rd, 2008 at 5:14 am

Cashman needs to step his game up and get a private Jet, ya dig?

  10. Carsten Charles November 3rd, 2008 at 5:16 am

Hey, Get Smart isnt terrible. Its worth 1 viewing

  11. mel November 3rd, 2008 at 5:17 am

The Dodger trade was a joke from the last thread…

  12. mel November 3rd, 2008 at 5:18 am

    Jeff,

The Yankees can’t afford such luxuries. They need to pinch pennies so they can pay CC.

  13. Jake November 3rd, 2008 at 5:56 am

Cashman better tap the Marlins, and get Jeremy Hermida. He was available at the deadline (part of the rumored 3 way deal that involved Manny) so get in there Cashman, thats our future RF.

Veras for Hermida, DONE, D-O-E-N, DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He hits for a little power, doesn’t steal bases, doesn’t hit for average, doesn’t walk, strikes out too much and he’s a brutally bad fielder. Exactly what good would he be?
His only value is his age. He makes very little money….less than $500,000 a year. Other than bad numbers, why would Florida trade him?

  15. Jean Valjean November 3rd, 2008 at 7:32 am

What would we do if we didn’t have Mel to suck up to Pete all the time and SJ44 to brag about his connections in the baseball industry?

  16. Jean Valjean November 3rd, 2008 at 7:43 am

Mel is poster child for “He/she who flaps the yap the most appears to know the most.” In Mel’s case it’s mostly flap for the sake of flap. Lots of words but nothing of substance. Typical big mouth know it all.

  18. Doreen November 3rd, 2008 at 8:10 am

    Pete -

I’m looking forward to some real information for a change. :)

Get Smart wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. There are so few movies to take our kids to, so we ended up at that one. I expected to doze off, but was pleasantly surprised. Totally silly.

I liked Mamma Mia, but can totally understand why you’d avoid it like the plague. For years, I avoided seeing it on Broadway – I guess I’m a bit of a snob, proud of the fact that I’ve never seen Cats. But we wanted to take grandma to see a Broadway show and needed something sure not to offend so we chose Mamma Mia. Again, totally expected to hate it. It was not your traditional Broadway musical and way over the top, but if you didn’t take it seriously, it was a whole lot of fun.

I don’t expect the Yankees to actually get anything done this week, but hope that a lot of groundwork will be put in place. (Maybe I’ll be surprised, though.)

And, did anyone else think the Giant’s football shoes were a little, well, funny looking? The bottoms and sides were a shiny red – like ruby slippers. Cracked me up!

  19. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 3rd, 2008 at 8:12 am

SJ: i didn’t think it was you.

by the way, did you post sunday morning (on this blog)?

had wondered if there is potential for Arbuckle or Gillick to join the yankees.

  20. SJ44 November 3rd, 2008 at 8:22 am

    Vinny,

I did and I answered your post in that thread.

It wouldn’t shock me if Cash talks to Gillick about consulting for the Yankees. No idea if he will accept.

Arbuckle? I think he’s going to have offers larger than what the Yankees can offer him at this time. At least he should.

There are organizations who would benefit greatly if he was their GM. He’s that talented.

  21. crawdaddie November 3rd, 2008 at 8:32 am

    Pete,
There are no other GM jobs open so ask Cashman about hiring Arbuckle and getting rid of Afterman. The Yankees need to get more talent evaluators in their front office while Afterman is good on ML rules and such, but without any scouting experience.

Which organization did Billy Eppler come from?

  22. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 3rd, 2008 at 8:34 am

SJ: thank you. Remember you being the first person to mention Gillick, a while back.

I will go back and check sunday’s thread.

  23. SJ44 November 3rd, 2008 at 8:41 am

There is no reason to fire Jean Afterman.

Every organization has people to handle the business side of the game.

If you fired her, someone would have to be hired to replace her because Mike Arbuckle is not a business-side guy. He’s a baseball guy.

  24. Frankie speaking . . . November 3rd, 2008 at 9:00 am

Keep Afterman but hire Arbuckle before it becomes a regret for not doing so. Gillick seems like he wants to be on the west coast.
The Yankees need strong advisors / baseball people to assist Cashman. Hiring Livesley was a good move and a good start.

This is really sick. We all enjoy this place, but we should boycott it until Pete demands registration. For the sake of a few extra hits from haters, morons and other forms of trolls, Pete is willing to let legitimate posters be scared away.

Does ANYONE here know of a legit Yankees blog where there is NOT registration?
Having people being able to post using other peoples handle is just sick. If trolls target people like SJ, CB, Mel and some of the other regulars, this place goes straight into the toilet.

  27. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 3rd, 2008 at 9:05 am

far as Arbuckle (instead of Gillick) – Don’t know if Cashman would approve. He may regard Arbuckle as a threat.

  28. Mark in Tampa November 3rd, 2008 at 9:14 am

Cashman and others flying commercial? I guess every little bit counts in the chase for CC!! Pete, please answer the questions everyone wants to know. Did Cash pay for his coffee and peanuts? And, did he bring his own earphones, or did he have to pay for the cheesy airline ones?

  29. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 3rd, 2008 at 9:16 am

Mark: lol. Take it, Cashman is seated in First Class.

don’t know if Pete is, tho

  30. randy l November 3rd, 2008 at 9:22 am

“Did Cash pay for his coffee and peanuts?”
yes, but he asked for younger and cheaper peanuts before he did.

The Yanks are the only AL team Peavy would consider because of his friendship with Jeter and the lure of the pinstripes?

Quotes from real people who should know and not just industry and unnamed sources. Or quotes from real people who are trying to drive up his price?

    http://www.nctimes.com/article.....833a61.txt

  35. randy l November 3rd, 2008 at 9:32 am

“far as Arbuckle (instead of Gillick) – Don’t know if Cashman would approve. He may regard Arbuckle as a threat.”

now that’s the understatement of the year.

  36. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 3rd, 2008 at 9:35 am

pat: I don’t believe it matters. Not able to see NYY giving up the inventory, necessary to bring Peavy to the bronx. Not for a NL pitcher who plays 3/4 of his games in Petco, Dodger Stadium, and PacBell. Add to the fact he is not a power-pitcher.

Matt Holliday via trade, is a different story. He will not (at least shouldn’t) be as costly as Peavy. Able to see NYY offering a package of Hughes and 1 or 1 MLB-ready relief pitchers. And a C prospect.

  37. pounder November 3rd, 2008 at 9:41 am

    Hot stove season,gotta love it.

  38. trisha - I predicted the Rays over the Sux; I predicted the Phils over the Rays; stick with me. Yankees will win it all next season! :) November 3rd, 2008 at 9:42 am

jen, something makes me think that Pete and his cronies know better than to try to hound and harass Cash when he isn’t in a space to be hounded and harassed! Girardi is the new kid on the block so they figure they can push him around at will!

About Cashman, private jets, and flying commercial. Brian Cashman has always struck me as the really down-to-earth kind of guy who TRULY cares about his job and trying to be successful in it, as opposed to the $$$$ and the perks. Maybe lots of GMs are that way I don’t know. But I don’t think his main concern is what he gets to eat in flight. I have always considered Cashman class all the way. I’m mighty glad we have him.

  39. Fredo Corleone November 3rd, 2008 at 9:43 am

“He will not (at least shouldn’t) be as costly as Peavy.”

Not sure I’d count on that Vinny. I think the Rocks are looking to hit a homerun on Holliday.

  40. SJ44 November 3rd, 2008 at 9:49 am

There is no reason for him to be threatened by Arbuckle.

He has a new, 3 year contract that’s fully guaranteed. He’s one of the most secure GM’s in the game right now, contractually speaking.

That’s not how he rolls, even if he didn’t have the contract in tow.

If he was that insecure, Stick wouldn’t still be around because, as well as they get along, they have had their disagreements over the years on players from time to time.

Healthy disagreement within the office on such matters is a healthy thing. As long as it doesn’t spill out into the public, you want dissenting points of view to be heard.

  41. SJ44 November 3rd, 2008 at 9:52 am

The private jet issue has nothing to do with handling thing with class or not with class.

It has to do with the Steinbrenners approving its use.

For the GM Meetings, they won’t approve a $40,000+ expenditure for such use because its unnecessary.

For the wooing of free agents? The jet will be in use.

Especially if/when they need to fly CC to NY for his press conference! lol

  42. trisha - I predicted the Rays over the Sux; I predicted the Phils over the Rays; stick with me. Yankees will win it all next season! :) November 3rd, 2008 at 9:57 am

And here’s what I like best about Cashman. He stays close to the vest until he is ready to give up information. That may not serve the scoop-happy press corps, but I think it serves the Yankees well in every possible way. Which of course is ALL I care about!

  43. trisha - I predicted the Rays over the Sux; I predicted the Phils over the Rays; stick with me. Yankees will win it all next season! :) November 3rd, 2008 at 10:00 am

Actually to me it has everything to do with Cashman having class since unlike a lot of people who are so into their own power and pelf and like to brag about it…Cashman is quite down to earth.

My guess – which is good as yours and sometimes has been shown to be better :D is that Cashman could care less about being on a private jet.

Don’t know whether you are SJ44 or his shadow but the answer remains the same.

  44. randy l November 3rd, 2008 at 10:06 am

i think it’s a no brainer that cashman is afraid of hiring talented young assistant gms who could replace him. no one that i know of has gone on to gm jobs after working for cashman the way josh bynes went to the diamondbacks after working under theo.

arbuckle isn’t young but he’d still be a threat to cashman. if the yankees don’t make the playoffs for a second straight year,i don’t see cashman not being fired despite two more years on his contract. i think cashman knows having talented management people around would only grease the likelihood of him being replaced.

of course if he hired some good assistant gms, maybe the yankees would make the playoffs and he wouldn’t be in a position to be fired. there’s nothing in cashman’s history that shows that he surrounds himself with talented people who could replace him at some point.

but hey, it’s just baseball. it’s not life and death. if the yankees want to run as a mom and pop and not be that competitive, that’s their business.

  45. Fredo Corleone November 3rd, 2008 at 10:09 am

    Randy I:

How is a guy with zero GM experience a threat to one of the longest tenured GM’s in baseball, who is about a week and a half into a three year contract?

  46. randy l November 3rd, 2008 at 10:12 am

    fredo-
don’t you think if the yankees miss the playoffs for a second straight year that cashman’s job would be in question?

are the yankees a slam dunk to beat the rays and red sox next year? i don’t think so. therefore cashman’s job could be easily threatened as early as next fall.

  47. Mark in Tampa November 3rd, 2008 at 10:20 am

When you get a chance, Pete, set the blog clock back an hour!

  48. SJ44 November 3rd, 2008 at 10:20 am

    Trisha,

They had no problems using the private jet a few years ago when they were romancing Damon as a free agent, or when they traded for Arod.

In fact, the private jet trip Jeter and Arod took from Tampa to NY for the press conference went a long way toward the two of them putting their differences in the past.

The private jet is never used to go to the GM Meetings. Not only is it a wasted expenditure, it doesn’t look good.

Its not a “class” issue. Its a business issue.

You may not believe that and that’s ok with me.

I suspect you will see plenty of its use if they are aggressive on the FA front.

To that end, impressing would be FA’s, the Yankees have never been shy about breaking out the “big guns” or the “big jets”, whichever best makes its case.

  49. pat November 3rd, 2008 at 10:22 am

“is that Cashman could care less about being on a private jet.”

Don’t be so sure. I’ve had the pleasure of flying private a few times for business and let me assure you, commercial has never been the same since.

  50. Mark in Tampa November 3rd, 2008 at 10:26 am

Maybe Kevin Brown was using the jet. Doesn’t he still have some backlogged miles from his disastrous contract?

  51. Bronx Jeers November 3rd, 2008 at 10:26 am

St Regis Resort at Monarch Beach?

This is the same resort that caused all the stir with the AIG conference a few weeks back.

Let’s all hope Cash gets himself one of those 500$ rubdowns as it looks like he could use it.

  52. Fredo Corleone November 3rd, 2008 at 10:27 am

    Randy:

As to your 1st question, I’d say that if the Yankees ownership had questions, they wouldn’t give him the three years. I’d guess Girardi would be in trouble rather than Cashman.

As to your 2nd question, I’d say no as well.

  53. Fredo Corleone November 3rd, 2008 at 10:31 am

“They had no problems using the private jet a few years ago when they were romancing Damon as a free agent,”

Did they actually romance Damon??? I thought they made him an offer and gave him about 2 hours to take it or leave it.

  54. SJ44 November 3rd, 2008 at 10:32 am

    Randy,

If the Yankees don’t make the playoffs this year, Cashman isn’t getting fired.

The Steinbrenner’s aren’t going to eat 2 years on his deal (at almost 4 million dollars) for him to sit it out and get paid.

Even when George was George, he never fired employees with that much time/money left on their deals.

If there was/is anything George hates more than losing, its paying what he would call “dead money” (money owed to former employees/players) to people no longer affiliated with the organization.

  55. Braintrust November 3rd, 2008 at 10:33 am

If the Brewers are offering 4 years @ 100M, the Yanks will offer 6 years @ 160M. There’s no way CC’s leaving 60M on the table.

  56. SJ44 November 3rd, 2008 at 10:35 am

    Fredo,

The first face to face meeting they had with Damon was in Orlando and they arrived there via private jet.

After Damon accepted the deal (sometime after the initial meeting), they used to jet to transport he and his wife to NYC for the press conference.

Even though Cash kept the negotiations under the radar, they made it known early to Boras and Damon their interest in him was real and not just to drive up the price on the Red Sox.

  57. Trevor November 3rd, 2008 at 10:38 am

I’m going to take a guess and say the Mets sign Abreu. He loves NY and Omar loves Latin players. Great match. Any how if that happened Yankees receive the 23rd pick in the draft.

  58. Bronx Jeers November 3rd, 2008 at 10:41 am

On the other hand, if they don’t make the playoffs after having another RISP fiasco season, Girardi may go provided there is another attractive option available.

  59. Bronx Jeers November 3rd, 2008 at 10:46 am

Abreu would look real nice in the Mets lineup. Having Beltran play next to him sort of negates some of his shoddy defense as well. At least in the gap.

Marte is another guy the Mets need.

  60. Laura - Ready for '09 November 3rd, 2008 at 10:46 am

Abreu will either be a Mutt or a Cub. My guess is he goes to the Mutts so that he can torture us during the Interleague games.

  61. Laura - Ready for '09 November 3rd, 2008 at 10:48 am

“He loves NY and Omar loves Latin players.”

Omar loves Latin players? That has got to be the understatement of the year. I don’t think you can join the Mets unless you are Latin.

  62. randy l November 3rd, 2008 at 10:55 am

The Steinbrenner’s aren’t going to eat 2 years on his deal (at almost 4 million dollars) for him to sit it out and get paid.”

    sj-
what’s 4 million a year to the yankees? aren’t they looking at adding 200 million to their payroll over the next 5-7 years in free agent signings? if they do miss the playoffs for a second straight year which is probably 50/50,you may be right that they wouldn’t fire him, but they’d think about it . no way he’d keep his power going 0-2 in the playoffs with him at the wheel. if they didn’t want to fire him and have to pay him, they could just shove him sideways and get him out of the way. cashman wouldn’t go for that.

if he resigned, no money is owed. i still think the only way cashman stays in his present position with his present power is if the yankees make the playoffs.

  63. Trevor November 3rd, 2008 at 10:56 am

Of course I’m hoping he goes to the Mets instead of the Cubs because of the higher draft pick.

  64. Bronx Jeers November 3rd, 2008 at 10:58 am

Ken Rosenthal is reporting Milwaulkee offered CC 100 mil for FIVE yrs.

Got to feel sorry for those fans.

It does say a lot about the state of baseball that a 20 mil a year contract can be viewed as paltry.

  65. Glenn November 3rd, 2008 at 10:58 am

What’s the big deal with the private jet ? Cashman and staff plus a fairly large contingent of media requires more space for a cross country flight.
The private jet will be used later for transporting new Yankees at Stadium press conferences as in the past.

  66. Tom November 3rd, 2008 at 10:59 am

The Mets may not have the coin to sign Abreu. They need a closer and an arm in that rotation. Church, Murphy, Tatis, and Chavez will be their LF/RFs.

  67. Laura - Ready for '09 November 3rd, 2008 at 11:12 am

“The Mets may not have the coin to sign Abreu. They need a closer and an arm in that rotation. Church, Murphy, Tatis, and Chavez will be their LF/RFs.”

I thought they wanted to get rid of Church. Isn’t he *supposedly* unhappy playing in NY?

I agree though that they may not have enough money left to sign Abreu once they try to address their other needs, especially if they push hard for K-Rod.

Just like what colored guy would be happy playing for the Red Sox?

  70. Onkel Bob November 3rd, 2008 at 11:15 am

One recommendation: L’Hirondelle in San Juan Capistrano. Old fashioned French/Belgian fare, it’s been years since I’ve been but the reviews imply the quality is still good.

Why would we be assuming the Mets are strapped financially?? They too are opening a new stadium with new revenue streams. Further, Alou and Martinez are off the books and Delgado, Schnieder, Wagner and Schoenwiess are off the books after next year. Can’t see the Mets crying poor. Further, aside from Beltran, their outfield stinks.

“Wright, Schneider, Church, Maine, Pelfrey, Smith and Wagner to name a few must have missed that memo. Perception isn’t always reality.”

They were leftovers. We’ll see how many non-Latin free agents they sign this year. It won’t be many.

Fredo, I’m not saying the mets are strapped for cash,-They are not. They should have around 30mil. to spend this winter. I was suggesting that the Mets will, most likely, sign a closer (Fuentes?) and a starting pitcher (Lowe?). Both of those positions will cost big money to fill. RF\LF would be third on the list of priorities-I would assume.

“Why would we be assuming the Mets are strapped financially?? They too are opening a new stadium with new revenue streams. Further, Alou and Martinez are off the books and Delgado, Schnieder, Wagner and Schoenwiess are off the books after next year. Can’t see the Mets crying poor. Further, aside from Beltran, their outfield stinks.”

That may be true, Fredo. However, other organizations aren’t as free with their money as we are. The Mets may have the money; doesn’t mean that they want to spend it.

    “They were leftovers.”

Left over from what? With the exception of Wright, I think everyone I listed was not in the Mets system or on the team prior to Omar.

Heyman forecasts Yanks getting CC, Burnett & Casey Blake.

    Bronx Jeers,

Yes, Beltran would help Booby somewhat in the gap, but not the “Waaaalllll” plays. Does anyone know the composition of the right field Wall in the new Met park? That may well be the determining factor. Rumor also has it that the Cubs might be interested in Booby; I assume they will tell him, up front that there’s brick behind the ivy. How do you think Sweet Lou would react when Booby does his usual on a “Brick Play?”

Okay keep Afterman to handle the paperwork and MLB issues, but hire Arbuckle as an assistant GM with scouting and evaluation responsibilities.

Also, I did a little research on Billy Eppler, who’s about 33-34 years of age so perhaps he has some potential to be something special for the Yankees as a baseball executive with scouting and evaluation skills.

    American air travel stinks.

I imagine that GM meetings these days are more like meetings of ivy-league, preppy statisticians talking about VORPS rather than a bunch of old baseball lifers telling old war stories and drinking too much.

Uh – there is no big deal with the private jet. It got kind of off track because I mentioned that Cashman seems to be a real down-to-earth guy and doesn’t feel the need to play “look at me!” So I commented that I believed that Cashman woulnd’t be the kind who really gave a crap about what kind of transportation he took since he seems like he has more class than that – meaning that he doesn’t need to be treated like he’s Donald Trump.

I stand by that. But that somehow got twisted into the jet vs. no jet issue.

I just take it as an example of “he said she said” meaning that men and women seldom speak the same language to begin with, and older generations of men likely speak a more foreign version than younger generations. There are always exceptions of course.

Sometimes I go with female speak – for obvious reasons – and end up having to break it down into a different language because men and women don’t necessary have the same filters.

    GreenBeret7,

I, as you may well know, have many connections in the baseball industry. My sources in the Dodgers’ FO staff tell me that there is no way Colleti would pull the trigger on that deal. Try starting with A-Jax, Hughes, Melancon, Betances, Montero, etc.

    i agree.

i though it was a joke.

    not even remotely close.
