Here is some of what I’ve picked up today:
Padres GM Kevin Towers said that trading Jake Peavy remains a priority for economic reasons. Via his agent, Peavy has said forcefully he wants to stay in the National League. But he has agreed to consider AL teams, at least the Yankees and the Angels. This could well be strategy to get some NL teams to boost their offers. If not, the Yankees will certainly have to take a hard look. But it would be foolish to make a move now. If the Padres need salary relief, the price will drop.Â
Scott Boras told Joel Sherman of the Post that Greg Maddux will retire.
Brian Cashman said the Yankees get calls on Brett Gardner and Austin Jackson.
Theo Epstein was late getting here as he went to Arizona to see Clay Buchholz pitch.
Omar Minaya has no intention of trading Carlos Delgado. He also claims he would be OK with Luis Castillo playing second base.
Cashman has his stats guy, Mike Fishman, with him out here.
Meanwhile, why are people wringing their hands over the Yankees signing Sergio Mitre to a minor-league contract? You bring in him, you see what he has and maybe by July or August, he proves helpful as a spot starter or long reliever. The guy gets groundballs and it costs you nothing to see what he can do once he heals up.
This is how Triple-A pitching staffs get built. Â
