Yankees lose Chaves to Dodgers

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Nov 03, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

A little news for those of you who follow the minors: Scranton pitching coach Rafael Chaves has left the organization to become the minor-league pitching coordinator of the Dodgers.

Meanwhile, I can report from the GM Meetings that Brian Cashman has left for lunch. Exciting stuff, I know.

Phil Hughes is scheduled to start in the Arizona Fall League tonight. He missed his last turn in the rotation because of a torn fingernail. That league wraps up Nov. 20, so he has time to get a few more in.

Speaking of Blalock I read on MLBTR that the Rangers are “targeting” Ian Kennedy. That would make it easy for us to get Blalock but I think better options are out there. I think they may be the only team who actually wants Kennedy though, so maybe we’re not in a position to pass up that offer?”

Kennedy and a lesser prospect for Blalock would be a steal. Hank Blalock is only 28. He have been a very productive hitter (when healthy) and has a knack for delivering the key it, when its needed.

Blalock would be excellent at 1st base

Not good… he is the one who taught everyone the cutter, including Hughes, Aceves, Robertson etc. Even Rasner had it working well for a while.

Amazing how they let these guys walk away without making an effort to retain them. And we wonder why our development is stagnant and all of our prospects never progress as expected unless they are supremely talented (i.e Joba/Cano). Same thing happened with Garrett Patterson in the 06 offseason. He is the guy who helped Hughes become the #1 prospect in 2006 and we let him walk and it has been nothing but downhill since then for Hughes.

Kennedy for Blalack would be a steal. I’d do it in a second.

  5. trisha - I predicted the Rays over the Sux; I predicted the Phils over the Rays; stick with me. Yankees will win it all next season! :) November 3rd, 2008 at 3:58 pm

*Yanks sign former Marlins pitcher Mitre*

Rehabbing hurler might not be ready to play until midseason

I just got an email that allowed me to download the new toolbar from Yankees.com.

Very cool. Also got the latest news in an instant.

  6. Drive 4-5 November 3rd, 2008 at 3:59 pm

    Front Row,

How do we know the Yanks didnt try to retain him? For all we know, he could have left for any number of reasons.

“Yanks sign former Marlins pitcher Mitre”

whoa, hopefully Mike Harkey could fix him.

Hank Blalock would be a steal? That’s trading our garbage for someone elses dented can of peas

  9. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 3rd, 2008 at 4:02 pm

    A dented can of peas?

    whatever dude.

  10. mel November 3rd, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Sounds like a promotion that he couldn’t pass up. Good luck to Chavez.

Blalock did a better job at 1B then when he was a 3B.

  12. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. Jets are tied for first!) November 3rd, 2008 at 4:04 pm

Wow the Dodgers love to steal from the Yankees! This is why CC needs to get a blank check. Phil going tonight hopefully he looks great the rest of the way out, even if its just to increase his trade value.

  13. Chris November 3rd, 2008 at 4:04 pm

Blalock hasn’t been healthy in 3 years and even when playing healthy he’s an average player at best and has played 34 games at first base in his career. So i don’t quite get how he’d be considered excellent at first base

Where is this on MLBTR? Texas? Makes no sense.

“He have been a very productive hitter (when healthy)”

“When healthy”. Those are the key words. He can’t stay healthy. Pass.

  17. Tom November 3rd, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Rafael Chaves was with the Yankees for what 1 year?

  18. BBB November 3rd, 2008 at 4:09 pm

With Blalock, I guess I don’t really see him play often enough to feel strongly either way about him. Looking at his stats doesn’t even help much because they can either be interpreted optimistically (will be very solid if healthy) or negatively (has had a few good seasons but injury prone players don’t usually get better as they get older).

  19. Drive 4-5 November 3rd, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Blalock is a 2 time All Star.Butt his .337 obp would not fit well in the Yanks lineup. That’s especialy true if Xavier Nady takes over for Abreu. It would be tough carrying Blalock, Nady and Cano, all guys that strike out more than twice as often as they walk and have a low obp.

  20. BBB November 3rd, 2008 at 4:13 pm

Fredo: I couldn’t find the link, only remembered reading it but Ed said a few posts back that he found it, so he may still have it.

Rconn: “When healthy” are indeed the key words. Right now what assurances do we have that he would be better than Casey Blake who only costs money and is certain to at least play great D?
Blalock may be a decent pickup for the Yanks, MAY, but I definitely dont see how he’s a steal.

  21. S.o.S.27 November 3rd, 2008 at 4:17 pm

If were going to go after a risky injury prone player with high upside. I would prefer Crede at first.

  22. 86w183 November 3rd, 2008 at 4:37 pm

Blalock is a year and a half younger than Crede and has at least played some at 1B while Crede has not. Blake is a better bet health wise and has more experience at 1B, but he’s more than seven years older than Blake.

I’d study medical reports closely, but Blalock is an acceptable alternative to Teixiera if they strike out with Tex.

But why not BOTH Blake and Blalock. Blake could play 1B about a third of the time (mostly vs LHP), add in some DH and some LF and you have a lot of playing time.

  23. BBB (Adam Dunn 4 yr deal, 1b in '09, DH in '10 & on) November 3rd, 2008 at 4:48 pm

“But why not BOTH Blake and Blalock.”

Because as Drive 4-5 pointed out (in relation to getting Blalock) a few posts up, replacing Giambi and Abreu with Blake and Blalock would have nightmarish consequences on the team’s OBP. I’m definitely not ready to trade our RISP problems for OBP problems. Especially just having watched the Phillies bring home a championship created almost solely by OBP and barely at all by BA with RISP.

anyway, the answer to our 1b problem is in my username now :)

A fingernail injury? This kid is a bust.

  25. rumor monger November 3rd, 2008 at 5:03 pm

Haha, I was shocked nobody had ripped Hughes for having a ripped nail–”Hughes must have ripped his nail typing on his blog!!!!” “What Phil, did Carl teach you how to file your fingernails so that they rip and you can collect paychecks without pitching, you injury-prone bust you!” “Hughes is still the front-runner for the 2007-2008 Mark Prior Memorial Award presented by the BBWAA, the kid is washed up!”

    Etc. etc.

  26. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)! November 3rd, 2008 at 6:22 pm

Torn fingernail? Just chop off the finger..
