GMs on a field trip

The general managers – and I’m not kidding – are bowling now. Not entirely sure what that accomplishes. Brian Cashman will be meeting with the writers in another two hours or so.

Sorry for the technical difficulties on the blog today. There is some sort of problem with the entire LoHud.com web site. They’re working to fix it. Wish I had a better answer for you. I can barely get in to post.

Good thing its not Election Day or there’s a lot of baseball news.

i like bowling. maybe it’s just another version of tossing a football around, for GMs. and i wonder which GM has the best average?

Pete, tell Cashman about Garko when you have the chance.

    Hope they go Disco bowling

Burnett opted out, for those who didn’t know.

The GMs bowl? These guys are after my heart. I’m a big time bowler so they’ve earned some brownie points with me.

    Back to normal!

  11. AROD fan November 4th, 2008 at 5:53 pm

Are you permitted to ask the GMs if they vote as well as bowl? I don’t want to know who they voted for, but why are they scheduling bowling photo ops when like everyone else is voting? They have to kick off the next season of buying and selling humans on election day?

  12. Fran November 4th, 2008 at 5:53 pm

According to Michael Kay on ESPN radio the Yanks have declined the options on Giambi and Pavano. Heard it about 10 minutes ago on my way home.

  13. vinny-b (Hank Blalock for 1st base) November 4th, 2008 at 5:55 pm

lol. All the Pavano overreaction for not.

  14. kd November 4th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Declining Giambi and Pavano’s options does not necessarily mean that they are goners. Its means that they Yankees don’t want to pay then 23/13.5 mill. Don’t breath a sigh of relief just yet.

  15. Mark in Tampa November 4th, 2008 at 6:01 pm

    kd,

you beat me to it, I was about to say the same thing.

  16. Cal Bears November 4th, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Why did we decline Pavano’s option?

We could have traded him for some good prospects like we did with Sheffield.

  17. Left Coast November 4th, 2008 at 6:05 pm

Chris Carlin said we should trade Joba straight up for Peavy.

I would trade Hughes, Jackson, Kennedy, Sanchez, Melancon, and Aceves combined before I trade Joba.

    _____________

Haha…@13.5 million you think you are going to trade him…haha

  19. saucY (go PSU) November 4th, 2008 at 6:06 pm

so AJ declined his player option.

good for you AJ, good for you!

  20. Jeff November 4th, 2008 at 6:07 pm

We can only hope Cashman’s gutterballs aren’t symbolic.

  21. Bronx Jeers November 4th, 2008 at 6:08 pm

Of course they were going to decline Pavanos option. Doesn’t mean he still can’t come back.

Any deal for Pavano would be short term and incentive laden.

Pavano’s only 32 and may have some productive years ahead of him. Not saying it should be with the yanks but you know how these guys are with their reclamation projects.

  22. O*Line November 4th, 2008 at 6:09 pm

    Left,

No doubt. Joba is 100% untouchable in any trade, the only one in the farm who should be untouchable.

I’d give up Hughes in a heartbeat if SD wanted but Joba is off-limits for anyone.

  23. AJ YANKS November 4th, 2008 at 6:11 pm

When did Francessa turn his show into ‘Meet the Press’?

Did he talk sports at all today?

  24. PAT M. November 4th, 2008 at 6:14 pm

Bowling in Dana Point ???? Yachting yes, Golf yes, bowling ?????

  25. YANKS IN 2010 November 4th, 2008 at 6:16 pm

    AJ Burnett

    He’s always injured 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2007)
He’s only 11 games over .500 for his career
He pitched the most innings he has ever pitched last year (220+)

Someone please explain to me why the Yankees would want AJ Burnett….

  26. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)! November 4th, 2008 at 6:16 pm

“When did Francessa turn his show into ‘Meet the Press’?

Did he talk sports at all today?”

He did. I think it was for a grand total of 15 minutes though

  27. Ramon November 4th, 2008 at 6:17 pm

Good for us that Burnett opted out. Just another option if CC takes $40 million less to go to West.

  28. Doreen November 4th, 2008 at 6:17 pm

    Love the bowling!

It’s really a great outing – competitive, but relaxing, with lots of time to talk. Perfect field trip!

    Pete =

Love your sense of humor. :)

  29. vinny-b (Hank Blalock for 1st base) November 4th, 2008 at 6:19 pm

“When did Francessa turn his show into ‘Meet the Press’?
Did he talk sports at all today”

nope. He discussed the history of American politics (with himself), for the entire 5 hrs

  30. Dan L in nj November 4th, 2008 at 6:21 pm

I don’t think you can trade Hughes until after his 25th birthday. There are just to many pitchers that need some time to get things together. Danks and Floyd of the White Sox and Santana of the Angels all came through in 08 after poor 07 seasons.

  31. Mark in Tampa November 4th, 2008 at 6:33 pm

    Pavano in ’04:

    18-8 3.00ERA, 10 less hits than IP, 16HR, 1 BB every 4.53 IP

    Burnett in ’08:

    18-10 4.07ERA, 10 less hits than IP, 19HR, 1BB every 2.56 IP

Besides not having to face Burnett 4 times per year, WHY?

  32. RhapsodyInBlue November 4th, 2008 at 6:58 pm

Up until last season Burnett had never won more than 12 in his 11 year career.

He was on the DL twice last season for a sore should.

11 times on the DL in his career, there are some risks involved with Burnett.

Especially with a multi-year 15 mil. per contract.

I’m all for CC, Burnett’s injury history is scarey.

    FYI – For discussion
    Jake Peavy, GOING ON 28
    Year – ERA – LG — E+ – WHIP
    —————————————————-
    2002 4.52 3.74 083 1.423
    2003 4.11 3.94 096 1.310
    2004 2.27 3.88 171 1.196
    2005 2.88 3.85 134 1.044
    2006 4.09 4.04 099 1.231
    2007 2.54 4.04 159 1.061
    2008 2.85 3.82 134 1.180
    —+—+—–+—+—+—–+—–+—-+—–+
    07 Yr 3.25 3.92 121 1.186

He has always picthed in SD, NL West., a weak htting division.
The last 3 years, has average a very inconsistant ERA+ of: 131
    What happened in 2006? Injury?
Over last 6 years, he has averaged around 190 IP, low of: 166.3

How would you thnk that ERA+ of 131 translates to the AL EAST? 125? 120?
How about playing with the Yanks terrible defense, subtract another .02-.05 points.
So is his Yankees ERA+ around 122?
Would you guys be surprised if for the Yankees in 2009, He posted an ERA+ of 122? Expect more?

    Wang has a carrer ERA+ of: 116
