Laura - Ready for '09
November 4th, 2008 at 10:58 am
No, no, no to Peavy. He’ll get killed in the AL.

I think that we are going to end up regretting letting Abreu go. Everyone here knows how I much I like Nady. He’s a good player and yes, he’s wicked hot in the looks department. But he is not as good as Abreu is at getting on base. He’s going to strike out more and walk less than Bobby does. Mark my words – it’s going to be a mistake, especially if we don’t land Texeira (which could happen).
------------------------------------------------------------

if the yankees were guaranteed that abraeu would produce his 2008 numbers i might agree but giving a 35 year old a 3 year contract for a lot of money and he is terrible defensively is a bad idea.

we fell in love with his automatic numbers but how long can he do it.right now if his numbers drop his age would be the reason,a younger player not so.

the yankees 2007 production was and should not be a measuring stick in wich it has become.

it was during the ped era.

the yankees do not have to score 1000 runs to win it all and because of the huge dropoff between 2007 and 08 people think we have to at a minimum replace those runs, not so.

they have to win games and that starts with pitching,a balanced team, debth and player developement.

if they win 2 games in a row with a 2-1 score or lose 2 in a row with a 9-8 score the difference is in the 2 wins they scored 4 runs and the 2 losses they scored 16 runs.

point being, don't get to caught up in numbers, pitching wins but you still have to have a good enough offense.

"“I think a Damon, Manny, Xavier outfield with Matsui DH’ing is one you can live with”

That defense sucks. The only reason it worked for the Red Sox is because they play in a little-league ballpark with retarded dimensions.

I do agree however with the sentiment of having Matsui bail next year and Manny playing backup OF and DH the rest of the time.

I just hope we don't see another Tori Hunter quick deal...Recall last season, the Hunter signing came out of nowhere.......Those who are advocating to address the pitching needs first I believe are correctly dialed in.....Remember with the ( hopeful ) healthy return of Posada and Matsui, the lineup will be stronger and more effective....You can always add the pieces after resolving the most glaring concern Starting Pitching.....

Boras is your consummate negotiator. He asks for numbers which he knows he will not get, but it's Negotiating 101 to ask for far more than you expect, especially if you hold the cards. He does not really "expect" "10" for Tex and "6" for Manny. He will take what the market will ultimately give....As to Tex, it's how desperate the Angels really are, knowing full well that the Yankees will play (but after their pitching needs are satisfied), and as to Manny, whether the LA media pressure pushes the Dodgers to make a "high" proposal that they know will be refused, or tabled, at best. Boras is playing two games with the same deck.

Tex is probably the easier sell for a deal closer to what Boras wants...so he could go first to the Angels and pre-empt the Yankees. That would leave Manny with the Yankees then having no reasonable alternative on the open market.

Bru:

You make a fair point. This is where Cashman needs to show some creativity. There’s no skill involved in signing Sabathia or other free agents for big money. What’s he going to do to improve the team without breaking the bank, which is his stated goal, is the question.

------------------------------------------------------------

they are in a very tough spot.

trading for any good player will cost tons of prospects and signing tex will cost a ton of money.

a lot of things were done wrong leading up to this.

we need to sign 3 pitchers and sabathia is going to get paid an massive amount of money.

is this the way to go? would it be better to look at dempster and maybe trade cano for a pitcher?

sabathia for 6 or 7 years scares the crap out of me,much more than tex.

i just see all these teams sign tons of big contracts and none of them made it far into the post season.detroit,seattle,cubs.santanna,zito,bedard,hampton.they never work.

it is the smaller moves that work it seems.

signing sabathia and tex will cost close to 50 million and we will still need 2 more pitchers and have a centerfield problem.

with a 209 million dollar payroll how can we have so many problems?

if money is not an issue at all the easiest thing to do is sign sabathia, dempster, tex and another pitcher.our payroll will be the same in 09 because the above players will cost about 75 million, factor in the arbitration raises and it is about what is coming off the books.

the problem with that is every player is locked up long term for huge money except for damon, matsui, nady and after 09 we will need 2 outfielders and probably one of a dh or catcher.

what about moving arod to first and getting a third baseman?,trading hughes, cano for adrian gonzalez or another first baseman?,cano to get a pitcher and hughes to get a first baseman or centerfielder?

Mattingly's.......only it's is made of lead.

Dunn is not a very good defensive player.

"Really? Tell that to TB. They had decent pitching in the WS, but their offense was no where to be found"

It lost to good Philly pitching. Every Philly starter made it into the 7th inning and their bullpen was great. It's not like the Phillies offense was explosive. They averaged less than 5 runs per game despite scoring 10 in one of them.
