Thanks to the hard-working folks in the Yankees media relations department, here are some updated winter league statistics of Yankee players:

RHP Kevin Whelan has allowed just one earned run in six relief appearances for the Peoria Javelinas, striking out 10 batters in 10 innings. He ranks fifth in the Arizona Fall League in ERA (0.90).

OF Justin Christian, playing with the Caneros de los Mochis of the Mexican League, is tied for first in the league in stolen bases with seven. He has hit safely in 16 of his 20 starts with the Caneros. Christian is hitting only .241, however, with a .300 OBP.

2B Kevin Russo is currently riding a 13-game hitting streak for Peoria in the AFL. He is hitting .361 and has a .391 OBP.

2B Damon Sublett is having a strong season in Hawaii. He is at .294 with 15 RBI and seven extra-base hits in 51 ABs.

RHP Andrew Brackman is 3-3, 4.21 in Hawaii. In 25.2 innings, he has allowed 24 hits, walked 13 and struck out 27.

nice to see that brackman is actually pitching again

  2. Don November 4th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

Notably absent is Phil Hughes who hasnt pitched in 8 days since he got rocked in the rising stars game. The Yankees sent him there to get innings and by not pitching in 8 days you can put 2 and 2 together to realize if you dont pitch you cant get innings, maybe he is hurt or maybe there is something bigger brewing here……..JAKE PEAVY, Hughes would be our major chip and by cutting him off so abruplty, after Cashman himself said that they sent Phil there to get innings I think something is up here. CC and the Snake in front of Wang and Joba the next 10 ws titles will be ours and the universe will return to normal

    Is Gardner the new Christian?

“Notably absent is Phil Hughes who hasnt pitched in 8 days since he got rocked in the rising stars game.”

Huh? Hughes pitched the other day and was lights out.

  5. Peter Abraham November 4th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Um, Don, Hughes pitched last night and fanned 8 in five innings

Don, you need to get your eyes checked.

It would seem that Phil Hughes has recovered from his torn fingernail.

His line in the Arizona Fall League tonight: 5 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, 8 strikeouts. 59 pitches, 41 strikes.”

Yes, he had a little injury bothering him. Now he’s fine and dominating.

NO PEAVY. NO PEAVY. NO PEAVY.
3.86 outside Petco park, in the NL. LOL!

    Don,

Were you in a coma last night and just awoke from it this afternoon?

  9. Tseng November 4th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

I’m not gonna put too much weight on these winter league stats one way or the other, I’m just glad they’re all getting more experience.

  10. Fire Meachum November 4th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

Winter League (for pitchers) is for innings… nothing more. Results are meaningless.

  11. bru November 4th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

i hate to say this because somebody might have brought it up,i will have to check real good but don phil just pitched
last night and was lights out.

  12. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)! November 4th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

    Wake up Don

    Hey Don,

    PAY ATTENTION!

  14. Drive 4-5 November 4th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Is Humberto Sanchez pitching anywhere this winter? It sure would be nice to see him get into the mix.

  15. Fredo Corleone November 4th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

What’s the prognosis on Sublett? Seems to have a good bit of thump for a middle infielder, though his K/BB ratio is hideous. High ceiling guy? Decent middle infielder? Utility type?

  16. bru November 4th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

i heard sanchez is getting bombed or was recently.

  17. saucY (go PSU) November 4th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

way to pile on Don. not everyone is hitting refresh for new posts on various yankee blogs 24/7… (though i’m not sure why they wouldn’t be)

  18. Drive 4-5 November 4th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

    bru,

    Where is Sanchez pitching?

Cano plans to play one month for a team in the Dominican Winter League as a designated hitter. Cano, who retooled his swing in the second half of the season, decided to play winter ball because he wanted more at-bats.
    __________________________

I’m glad that Cano thought he needed more at bats…our players need to get a little hungrier…

If Cano ever wants to be “Carew”, he needs to work for it

In fact…Jeter, A-Rod, Gardner, Melky and Nady should be there too

“Is Humberto Sanchez pitching anywhere this winter? It sure would be nice to see him get into the mix.’

He’s in Zona. Couple of really bad outings, including one where he gave up 6 runs without recording an out, but a few outings where he had a clean (read: no runs) inning. 6 walks to 3 K’s and 19 baserunners in 6 1/3 innings, but again most of that was tied to the two bad outings.

  21. frits November 4th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

good for brackman. he’s such a stud. those BBs are high but that’s to be expected. love the k/9 rate!

he’s going to be fun to watch develop. it’ll take awhile, but its going to be worth it.

    bru,

    Where is Sanchez pitching?

    ————————————————————

not sure i will try to find it but it is as a reliever and his numbers are bad.

  23. Drive 4-5 November 4th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

Thanks Fredo. I saw his last outinng in September and was impressed. He worked an inning, threw 11 pitches,8 of them for strikes with a K.

  24. vinny-b (Hank Blalock for 1st base) November 4th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

    Fredo:

Sublett’s development was limited this year, due to injury. I did follow him closely, all of last year. Dating back to the beginning of the year, Sublett was viewed as having the tools to be a future 2nd basemen for NYY, and at the very least a utility player with the parent club. Last year, his bat was ahead of his glove. And like you said, he definitely has pop. Due to the injury season, i don’t know where he now ranks on the prospect scale

This Pavano news is truly upsetting. I Cash misses out on CC/Burnett and decides that Idle is an ample replacement he better get ready for last place and possible rioting in front of YS.

    FYI – For discussion
    Jake Peavy, GOING ON 28
    Year – ERA – LG — E+ – WHIP
    —————————————————-
    2002 4.52 3.74 083 1.423
    2003 4.11 3.94 096 1.310
    2004 2.27 3.88 171 1.196
    2005 2.88 3.85 134 1.044
    2006 4.09 4.04 099 1.231
    2007 2.54 4.04 159 1.061
    2008 2.85 3.82 134 1.180
    —+—+—–+—+—+—–+—–+—-+—–+
    07 Yr 3.25 3.92 121 1.186

He has always picthed in SD, NL West., a weak htting division.
The last 3 years, has average a very inconsistant ERA+ of: 131
    What happened in 2006? Injury?
Over last 6 years, he has averaged around 190 IP, low of: 166.3

How would you thnk that ERA+ of 131 translates to the AL EAST? 125? 120?
How about playing with the Yanks terrible defense, subtract another .02-.05 points.
So is his Yankees ERA+ around 122?
Would you guys be surprised if for the Yankees in 2009, He posted an ERA+ of 122? Expect more?

    Wang has a carrer ERA+ of: 116
