Yanks decline options on Giambi, Pavano

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Nov 04, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

It’s official now, the Yankees have declined the 2009 contract options of Jason Giambi ($22 million) and Carl Pavano ($13 million). The Big G will receive a buyout of $4 million. Pavano receives $1.95 million.

The Yankees can sign either player to a new deal if they want. That is unlikely.

Curiously, the Yankees did not announce their intentions regarding Damaso Marte, who has a $6 million option. That suggests they may in the process of trying to sign him to an extension.

Keep Marte and deal him later if he sucks. I don’t let him walk; the Mutts will get him.

    Keep Marte.

As we’ve seen… bullpens are so year to year, there is no such thing as excess. No guarantee that Bruney, Sanchez, Veras, Edwar, Coke, Robertson etc. do well next year and you can’t expect Melancon to dominate right away either. None of those guys have any track records.

If we have enough BP arms, then we can always trade them for some desperate team at the deadline. Marte is an asset.

Cleveland, Boston, and Arizona had the top 3 bullpens in baseball in 2007.

This past year year? Those pens all imploded despite having a ton of hard throwing power arms in there.

We had a great pen last year, no need to start tinkering with it.

I agree with Laura. We have not seen enought of Coke and it is hard to find descent lefties in the pen these days.

Hmm I’d prefer the draft picks of declining the option and offering arbitration. Still, if we keep him and utilize him well I wouldn’t mind that. Win-win!

I agree with AJW, last season we had one of the best bps in Baseball. Probably the main reason we won 89 games.

I agree with Laura, AJW and NYY/ Highlanders.

Marte will wind up with the lowly muts, we gave up a few decent players for him, we should keep him.

    He’s effective.

Have to admit…..I’ll miss Big G. He was a class act.

OH THANK GOD that Pavano is gone! When I heard they were thinking of keeping him I almost choked

I know I’m in the minority, but I think Pavano would be worth the gamble if the price is low enough.

It almost seemed like another eon ago when they signed Giambi! I remember how big a deal it was, how teary eyed he was at the press conference and in Yankee Stadium after he was signed. He was supposed to take the team the promise land. I thought the seven year deal would at least bring back a few more championships. But that was never to be. He didn’t seem to measure up to what he should have been, steroid controversy aside. The Yankee teams he played on also lacked the gritty core players. It really showed how much the Yankees missed Tino, too (why else would Cashman bring him back, if only for a short while?).

Yeah, thank heavens his 30 homers and 100 rbi’s are gone. And his .400 OBP. Yeah! Good riddance for a team that needs offense.
