Boras spreads the word on Lowe

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Nov 05, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Just spoke to Scott Boras about Derek Lowe. His sales pitch as far as the Yankees are concerned: Look at the postseason.

Lowe is 5-5 with a 3.33 ERA in 21 postseason starts. Since 2004, he is 4-1, 3.07.

“He wants to play on a winning team,” Boras said. “It’s hard to find pitchers who can perform in the postseason. It’s extraordinary what he has done.”

As the Yankees look for two pitchers, Lowe could be a better (and cheaper) alternative than A.J. Burnett. He probably would command a contract for fewer years as well.

————

Boras also talked a bit about the election and made an interesting point. He believes that teachers should be treated with more respect in the United States.

“College professors are held in high esteem and the same should be true of elementary and high school teachers,” he said. “I was the beneficiary of an athletic scholarship. We should offer some of our best minds scholarships with the intent on them becoming teachers. You’re talking about the future of our children.”

    Derek Lowe ?
NO THAKS, NOT FOR THAT KIND OF MONEY

Boras’ garden must be healthy. He sure spreads the manure. :)

CC, AJ, Lowe are all good choices. In decreasing order of contract years. If you’re going to get into 2nd tier, I don’t think it’s worth a long commitment.

If you haven’t listened to K-Law’s podcast I linked in the last thread, it’s worth a listen.

He thinks that the Yankees will make generous offers to CC & AJ. They wouldn’t mind having both, but hope this strategy nets them at least one. This thought sounds very familiar. Does K-law read Lo-Hud?

He talks about how Manny’s market is the Dodgers, the Yankees, and the Mets. And if the Yankees sign Tex, then the market really shrinks, so it might serve the Dodgers well to take their time.

“How is it that professors make hundreds of thousands of dollars for teaching maybe 3 classes, 3 days a week and yet a 4th grade teacher earns $40k and teaches 5 days a week for 8 hours on top of the work they take home with them?”

Where do Profs make “hundreds of thousands of dollars”? I want in on that….

  4. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 5th, 2008 at 2:13 pm

Ya, its about time teacher’s get some f-in credit.

Not only are they integral in the lives of our children and the nation’s youth, they get paid dog $hit for babysitting.

Both of my parents were teachers and I am likely to be one myself. Respect is long overdue and I don’t care if it sounds greedy: respect comes in the way of salary.

How is it that professors make hundreds of thousands of dollars for teaching maybe 3 classes, 3 days a week and yet a 4th grade teacher earns $40k and teaches 5 days a week for 8 hours on top of the work they take home with them?

Spreading the word on Lowe, eh?

Must smell a lot better than the what he was spreading last night when discussing Jason Varitek.

  6. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 5th, 2008 at 2:16 pm

    Tom,

Professors make considerably higher salaries than do grade-school teachers. Google it.

I don’t mean to undermine professors because they are equally integral to a full education, in my opinion. Its just crazy that the salaries are so drastically different.

Now, if a professor is esteemed, famous, yada yada, then perhaps they should be paid more or earn more for that matter for their additional contributions. But just because a 4th grade teacher doesn’t write a great essay doesn’t mean that what they are doing isn’t of equal contribution.

Lowe’s a 3-4 starter at best. Would he cost less than the $15 mil per year Burnett is looking for?

  8. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Staying to write the story November 5th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

    I agree with Scott Boras.

    Uh oh.

  9. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 5th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

I suppose it is also only fair that I point out that professors have to put a lot more time into getting tenure at a very low salary than a does a grade school teacher to get a job teaching the 4th grade.

  10. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 5th, 2008 at 2:20 pm

Lowe would not be a bad fit. I think 13-14/year over three years isn’t all that unfair.

  11. EricVA November 5th, 2008 at 2:22 pm

As a high school teacher I say Heck Yeah!

The worst part about this current economy is they must make huge budget cuts for schools. In the end, they always end up forgoing teacher raises because it makes everybody happy — except the teachers!

As for the Yankees, please sign Lowe instead of Burnett. Why would the Yankees want an injury risk?

  12. sevrox November 5th, 2008 at 2:23 pm

That tenure thing is changing for public educators – many districts make teachers jump through many hoops to get full-time tenured gigs, as well they should. College professors don’t work as hard as public schoolteachers, this from personal experience.

Tom – I dig the System of a Down lyric in your title.

  13. CB November 5th, 2008 at 2:24 pm

Boras is attempting to diversify his business. He’ll be negotiating the next contract for the American Federation of Teachers…

  14. Fredo Corleone November 5th, 2008 at 2:27 pm

“Would he cost less than the $15 mil per year Burnett is looking for?”

I wouldn’t assume Burnett is settling for $15M per year.

  15. bdog375 November 5th, 2008 at 2:28 pm

Is he saying that the devil should get a scholarship? I mean, I have always assumed he learned his ways from the devil, so is that the teacher he is referring to?

Francessa: Cano and Austin Jackson, for McClouth

    the man is crazy.

  17. Tseng November 5th, 2008 at 2:29 pm

It’s a broken system. They don’t want to put more money into public education because there are already a good number of bad teachers in there, and all the money in the world won’t fix them. But, because they’re not willing to invest money into the system to increase the salaries, our best and brightest find jobs in other higher paying areas. The only really talented teachers in the system are in there out of a sense of obligation or a desire to do good than for the money.

We’ve got to invest in our public education!

  19. Carmine November 5th, 2008 at 2:29 pm

Was Boras like overtaken by the spirit of Dorothy Day mid-session? That’d make for a great comedy.

  20. Tom ( you can't be neutral on a moving train) November 5th, 2008 at 2:30 pm

    The Mad Prince in Pinstripes-

No problem. I was not offended in the least. I am aware of how much college profs make. I have also seen first hand the unfairness in the pay scale that teachers face. My fiancée is a 3rd grade teacher. She went to college for 5 1\2 years (Master’s degree included) all for a job that pays 40-43k a year.

The Profs that make the big money are business, law, and science. Liberal Arts Profs (like myself) really don’t make that much money. I’m not complaining though….

  21. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 5th, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Yes, all GREAT comments on teachers’ behalves.

I love it! All of you teachers on here, I’d double your salaries staring 2009 if it were in my power!!

Maybe if we start taxing the rich bastards more heavily we can up the salaries of teachers.

I can’t wait to hear the response to this on here.

  22. GJS November 5th, 2008 at 2:34 pm

Who holds college professors in such high esteem? Most of them couldn’t cut it in the real world (competitive marketplace), so they go back to school where they can feel superior around young students. And most elementary/high school teachers are lazy, and don’t want to work that hard. The good ones really need to disband the teacher’s union so they can get their due. The bottom feeders are keeping them from being recoginized for their success.

  23. pat November 5th, 2008 at 2:34 pm

“yet a 4th grade teacher earns $40k and teaches 5 days a week for 8 hours on top of the work they take home with them?”

I come from a family of educators including one who is still a NYC high school teacher so trust that I appreciate all that teachers do. That being said, your parents need a new union and you should look into NYC or Westchester County if you decide to teach. Teachers straight out of college start at over $40,000 a year without a master degree and that excelerates quickly when the masters is completed and maxes out over $100,000 + with years. They teach 5 and a half hours a day and have an hour and a half of lunch and prep time built into their school hours. They have full medical/ dental benefits, work 185 days a year and retire with state medical benefits and 75% pay after 25 years of employment that is not subject to NY state taxes. Someone should treat all of us so poorly.

Getting better educated people to teach children is a nice idea but better educating parents in how to raise their children is the harder job but better solution. As someone who hears daily feel good and horror stories from an inner city high school, the kids who have involved parents who hold their kids accountable are more likely to succeed than those who don’t.

  24. Scooter November 5th, 2008 at 2:36 pm

I also have concerns regarding AJ and his injury history. I say go for CC and Lowe (for a low amount of years).

Regarding professors…They are normally better educated (PhD) as a opposed to a B.S. or M.S. for high school teachers. Further, at least in engineering, they do research, which brings in funding (ie money) grants to their university. This also helps increase their salary. I agree that high school and grad school teachers are significantly underpaid and should be compensated more, however, university professors should make more.

  25. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 5th, 2008 at 2:36 pm

    Tom,

definitely good points and yes, business, law, science get the bigger salaries for sure. Not sure that is the right way, but it is what it is.

Liberal Arts professor eh? Nice! Where at? What is your specific field?

I am an English Professor in the making. In grad school as we speak.

  26. Scooter November 5th, 2008 at 2:37 pm

instead of grad school…I meant to say grade school in the above.

  27. Tom ( you can't be neutral on a moving train) November 5th, 2008 at 2:38 pm

    The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

What era? 18th Century Lit. For me.

  28. Patrick Bateman November 5th, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Boras is right, education is the key to the future.

So next time he tries and pull the wool over everyones eyes by telling Manny Ramirez to act like a horses backside so he can weasel his way out of a contract, everyone will know that Scott was behind the whole thing.

  29. bdog375 November 5th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

GJS said “Who holds college professors in such high esteem? Most of them couldn’t cut it in the real world”

It seems you have some inferiority issues. Some of the brightest minds in the world are in professors in our universities.

It is my guess that you either went to a college that does not have professors who earn tenure from research as well as teaching, or you were in a degree program that is of little academic value.

  30. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 5th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

    Tom,

    I am a Milton man…i know, i know.

I actually am interested in Epic literature as well. I’ll likely end up pursuing a career in Renaissance Lit up through Milton while my personal interests revolve around Contemporary Lit. and the Epic.

  31. JoeT 28 in 10.... KEEP PHIL FRANCHISE!! November 5th, 2008 at 2:44 pm

Well since I’m going to be a teacher, I finally have something positive to say about Boras!

  32. 213 Area Code November 5th, 2008 at 2:49 pm

    No Lowe! Please.

  33. The Reviosionist November 5th, 2008 at 2:53 pm

Please keep Boras away from the teaching profession, I’m already paying too much tuition.

  34. Jim in CT November 5th, 2008 at 2:54 pm

There is nothing to stop Scott Boras from starting and funding a foundation to do exactly what he believes the country needs. Many people of lesser means than Boras have done exactly that.
He has certainly extracted enough funds from the sports fan population to do so. Or does he expect others to pay, yet again?

  35. Nick November 5th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

I think if there turns out to be a battle for Burnett between the Yankees and Red Sox the yanks will really have to make the extra effort to sign Burnett because I don’t think they can afford to let a pitcher that lights them up sign with their division rivals…just a thought

  36. saucY (go PSU) November 5th, 2008 at 3:02 pm

i don’t think teachers are underpaid… it’s some of the other jobs that people are being overpaid to do. ;)

  37. Jon November 5th, 2008 at 3:11 pm

Underpaid? I want to get paid $70K with great benefits and an outstanding pension for working 9 months a year. And has anyone seen the condition of NYC’s public schools? If anything the teachers are overpaid.

  38. Skippy November 5th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Tom, my sister specialized in 18th c. Lit and now teaches Lit and creative writing at the college level. She belongs to the 18th Century Lit Studies Society (or whatever the exact name of the group is) and often speaks at conferences, like last year in Portland. Are you a student or are you working your way up the academic ladder?

  39. AROD fan November 5th, 2008 at 4:13 pm

So during this time when politics are all anyone can think about/talk about… people all over are partying in the streets,.. it turns out that Boras is the only one at the meetings capable of a legit political conversation? So not surprised!

  40. AROD fan November 5th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

    The revisionist…

we have free public education in this country. that is what Boras if referring to.
