Arn Tellem, the agent for Mike Mussina, has no update on the Moose and his plans other than to say that it was a big decision and he didn’t expect it to drag out for very long.
I believe we’ll get an answer sometime soon, the end of this week or next.
I’m not counting on Moose for next year. Let him retire on top. If the HOF voters are so stupid as to not look at his whole body of work, the fact that he thrived in the tougher division, they are losers.
Please predict:
What will the payroll be next season?
I predict $185/190 mil.
CC really wrote his own ticket, with his epic performance in 2nd half of season/down the stretch.
if not for this, don’t know if NYY would be set on out-bidding everyone.
Could you imagine Johnny Damon for Paul Konerko? You fill a 1B need, then you take a look at bringing Abreu back.
Gardner, Jeter, Abreu, ARod, Posada, Matsui, Cano, Konerko, Nady
.. That is a very SLOWWWWW team lol. I think you need to bring some speed back for Damon if you’re going to dump him. Or… trade Damon for a pitcher and try Orlando Hudson in the OF
vinny, agree.
If he was a FA last year, I don’t think we go this crazy
And so based on that information, I would hope I don’t get trashed for thinking that there is still a chance he might come back despite being told by Pete that he is NOT coming back – or words to that effect.
I am thinking that Mussina is not the kind to draw things out for dramatic effect. In fact I think we all know he is not.
This goes back to my remembering that Moose’s last interview with Kim Jones did not sound anywhere near as definitive as the interview Pete taped; again, until Moose announces he is not returning or does not want to return, I am going to put him in my rotation.
MOOSE – PLEASE COME BACK!!!
Always forget to change the tagline on one computer to match the latest on the other computer.
Rockies general manager Dan O’Dowd told the Rocky Mountain News that if Holliday, Garrett Atkins and Willy Taveras all go, he’s ready to start Ian Stewart at third base, Seth Smith in left field and Ryan Spilborghs in center.
Above on mlb.com site.
Rockies interested in Ian Kennedy.
Anyone on this blog like Spilborghs for center?
Atkins a former 1st baseman with righthanded power, but worse splits away from Coors-any Interest?
Would rather see Moose back for one year than Pettitte who tired down the stretch.
“Anyone on this blog like Spilborghs for center?”
Spilborghs would be good, however he’s a 4th OFer and does put up good numbers though. Who knows what kind of numbers he could put up when playing FT?
Team speed is vastly overrated along with athleticism. Give me a team with a cumulative OBP is the .366 range and i’ll show you a team that’ll score nearly 1000 runs.
What’s all this talk about signing Hudson to play center. If you want to do that, why not sign Rafeal Furcal who has a gun for an arm, is a basestealing threat, and a switchhitter??
I hope Moose doesnt do a Clemens on this retirement and drag it on for awhile. Does everyone agree that we can only have one of Moose or Pettitte? IMO I dont think Moose will have close to a year that he had last year. Thinking more like high 4 era.I would probably go with Pettitte. Rumors were he was hurt and tired in the end of the season so in turn had some bad starts. If we decline to sign either. Then sign a Lowe,Perez or Garland to take the place of either of the two.
I like david wright as a player but a GOLD GLOVE? again, he is a terrible 3rd baseman, i didn’t think the coaches/managers will make this mistake voting for him again. what a joke gold gloves has bacome.
Orlando Hudson? That would be a re-injured wrist waiting to happen. Furcal at short and Jete in center?
Maybe we could sign Sheets to play some 1st base.
Trader – I believe the talk about Hudson started with something someone read, written by Heyman. I said I don’t believe trade rumors to begin with, but I did respond with my take on Hudson. It was that and nothing more.
I didn’t get to watch him since he left the Jays. I am just saying that I would take his calibre player 7 days a week, 24-hours a day. Just a general statement on Hudson, not recommending that the Yankees trade for him since the position where he excels is already taken.
Ironically, Moose was one of the very few long-term deals that worked out…

SOS: get on the phone, and tell Francessa you found his CF’er
Jeter does like to make over-the-shoulder catches. Too bad it won’t happen. It should. Robin Yount moved to CF, and it worked out well.
Jetes wouldn’t make it in CF stop trying to pass him off there, ok now I got to go in the rain, later people.
I found out why Frankie made a big fuss over McClouth before. It’s because McClouth won his first Gold Glove, and now the Diet Coke Drinker is making a huge fuss over it.
vinny,
Dont forget hes not scared of walls or chairs. I heard that he had one of the worst shortstop ratings this year? I thought he improved his range? Im sure hes not giving up his position anytime soon. It would be interesting watcing him roam the outfield. And yes. If Robin could go to center and as i remember do a good job out there. Then why not el capitan?
“If the HOF voters are so stupid as to not look at his whole body of work, the fact that he thrived in the tougher division, they are losers.”
Sorry, Mussina in my opinion is not a HOF pitcher. He was very very good, a couple great years even but he never dominated. Career win totals should not be the factor in HOF. Mussina, Blyleven, Kaat, all excellent pitchers but not immortals. They did not dominate. He does nto belong in there with Gibson, Carlton, Palmer, Koufax.
Don’t put up any Moose stats – I go by what I saw and he is not deserving. Just because some undeserving pitchers are in (Niekro, Sutton to name 2) doesn’t mean the trend should continue.
Sorry, I know many here are biased because he pitched 8 years for Yanks but is he one of the best pitchers who ever played? No.
We need to somehow find a way to create a Strawberry-Boggs-Fielder bench again. It has been weak for years. We have nothing on the bench.
Getting Giambi to agree to a bench roll would be a nice start
Brandon is the king at having no evidence about something and making statements as if they are gospel.
I would love to see his explanation for why Jeter would never make it in CF, although I’m sure he wouldn’t have a legitimate answer for me.
Just wondering
Has there been even one logical trade proposal on Francessa’s show today?
Reyes, Murphy, and a pitcher for Holliday and Tulowitzski?
That would be a great trade
Jeter would be better in CF than he would be at 1st.
I actually wouldn’t mind that at all… too bad they’ll probably never approach him about it anytime soon.
sos:
yup. Robin Yount was an excellent CF’er. The perfect player/teammate.
I feel like it is already being dragged out – Im sure at this point he is leaning far one way or the other. He really shuld let the yanks know before free agents become available to talk to cash – it would be nice if he knew what we had and what we still needed ASAP. I think whether or not moose comes back we should sign two starters or sign one and trade for one. Wang, Joba, Moose, Pettitte, FA, FA – one or more of those six will get injured and/or be ineffective. Hughes shuld spend a good portion of next yr in the minors and be brought up around the all star break – if cash signed a FA last yr or traded for one instead of relying on hughes to fill a spot, he wouldnt have to play in the minors at all. The price you pay for rushing young pitchers is a steep one.
The gold glove award is an absolute joke at this point. Every single one of the NL winners are undeserving.
Xman: I counted 1 legit trade proposal. lol
Cano for Kemp. However, Francessa said he didn’t know enough about Kemp, to comment.
And then there’s Mrs. Kleich whose eyes know better than what any silly stats can tell her/him lmao.
Is there any reason to argue with a person who says don’t show me any empirical evidence, my eyes are the only evidence I need?
Mrs. Kleich have you met Brandon perchance? I’m sure you two would get along quite well.
I turned on WFAN for a second.
First thing I heard – A proposal of Matsui, Cano, Kennedy, Jackson for Ichiro.
I immediately turned it off.
“First thing I heard – A proposal of Matsui, Cano, Kennedy, Jackson for Ichiro.”
Francessa the king of idiotic trades!
Jeter’s going to be 35 next year. 35 year olds don’t move from one demanding position to another.
“Francessa the king of idiotic trades!”
That may be true but the Ichiro trade was a callers idea. Francessa told him he was giving up more than 2 players too many and he still probably wouldn’t do the trade.
Speaking of Yount. Wasnt he with the Brewers when they started out the season 13-0 and didnt make the playoffs? I believe they were the first team to do that.
Would Matsui,Kennedy,Gardner and a young relief pitcher bring us Ichiro? Hell throw in Melky while we’re at it.
“That may be true but the Ichiro trade was a callers idea. Francessa told him he was giving up more than 2 players too many and he still probably wouldn’t do the trade.”
…and he would give up Cano and Ajax for McClouth? no thank you. right there is already too much.
Ed,
That was a caller who proposed that particular Ichiro one.
But Francessa has spend plenty of time with idiotic McClouth proposals this afternoon.
SOS:
yes. Robin was on that team. As was Molitor. I was actually the bat-boy for their spring-training season, the same year.
they had a very solid team. A combination of youth & veterans. However, injuries (lot of hamstrings etc) prevented them. They did finish 20 games over 500. Good but not good enough, unfortunately.
I agree with Mrs. Kekich that Mussina will not go into the HOF if he retires now. Niekro and Sutton won over 300 games and they’re in; Blyleven and Kaat won a bit under 300 and they’re not out.
Mussina has no spectacular success, such as dramatic World Series victories, Cy Young Awards, very high strikeout totals, no-hitters, etc. Mussina probably needs 300 wins to get into the HOF
I think he’s coming back.
Wilson, i know its not you.
Cool stuff vinny. We must be close in age(34). Who was the coolest player on the team and the biggest a$$?
Hamstrings. hmmmm. They wouldnt happen to have had the strength and conditioning coach of the Yanks a couple years ago on that team?
SOS:
btw, Molitor had the 39-game hitting streak, the same year. The most impressive array of pure hitting (ie using the entire field) i’ve have seen, to this day.
Ted Williams once said, when he saw Paul Molitor come to the plate, he saw Dimaggio.
Fingers crossed that the “big decision” involves keeping on the pinstripes …. it’s a bit nervewrecking every time I check the blog because I never know if it’s going to be good news or bad!
Moose would never drag it out longer than he needs to, he’s too much a gentleman and too loyal to the Yankee organization.

okay, i’ll play by your rules and not post stats.
But your boy, Jim Palmer, has stated that if Moose stayed in Baltimore, he’d be the best Oriole pitcher in history. and I think i’ll go with Palmer’s eyes over yours
http://weblogs.baltimoresun.co.....een_t.html
“Mussina has no spectacular success, such as dramatic World Series victories, Cy Young Awards, very high strikeout totals, no-hitters, etc.”
Im not sure if he should be in the HOF. But he did dominate in the 90′s and i believe led the league in strikeouts a couple of years. I dont think he did that bad in the playoffs either.
If he was on the Yankees earlier in his career. I think he would have surpassed the 300. Dan Marino didnt have much success in the playoffs but is one of the best quarterbacks ever to live.
Ichiro is over the hill. Yeah he can slap his way to .330 but he has no power and is supposedly a bad clubhouse guy. The only player I would want from the M’s is King Felix and they’d never do that.
I CANT BELIEVE “DAVID WRIGHT WON THE GOLD GLOVE AGAIN”
SOS:
yes brother. Same range.
almost every player, was very nice to me. The ones which stand-out: Yount, Molitor, Rob Deer, Mike Felder, Jim Gantner. Even Yount and Molitor didn’t act like superstars. Very approachable.
biggest a$$? Chris Bosio.
lot of talent, on that team. BJ Surhoff, Dale Sveum, Dan Plesac, were rookies.
vinny,
I was going to ask you about the streak but thought it was in an earlier year. Molitor was a fun hitter to watch. But another pesky hitter in that era who was under the nose of Williams was Boggs. I would think he used all fields that much more. As much as i hate the sox and hate to give props to any of their players. He was great at doing that.
Just remembered he was a Yankee. Feel a little better complimenting him now.
David Wright is one of the worst fielding 3B I have ever seen. 16 errors yeah thats a gold glover.
are the writers responsible for selecting the GG winners?
or is it people at Rawlings?
Mrs Kekich—- I think it is unfair to compare Moose to the best of the best and dismiss how he compares with others in the Hall. I agree he isn’t one of the greatest pitchers I’ve ever seen. But I disagree that comparing him to others in the Hall that YOU don’t think belong is inappropiate.
I would take the careers of Mussina, Blyleven, Kaat and Tommy John over the careers of Sutton, Gaylord Perry, Phil Niekro and Ferguson Jenkins.
I know you didn’t want stats, but let me offer just one. Mussina’s career winning percentage (.638) is higher than any of those other seven guys.
Like I said on another post, if it’s truly taking this much time to make a decision, he’s going to regret it if he retires. You shouldn’t have to COME TO A DECISION to retire, you should absolutely know with every bone in your body that you want to.
AG— I think it’s the opposite. For Mussina, my guess is he’s asking himself (as Pettite has a few times) “Do I want another year of this?”
I bet we’ll know about both within a week. My guess is Mussina and Pettite both sign up for one more year (@ $ 12 M) to join Wang, Joba and either CC or AJ in the ’09 rotation.
Managers and coaches vote on Gold Glove… yup, they’re the geniuses who gave us Rafael Palmeiro one year when he played 13 games in the field.
