Fascination with dirt continues

Tweet [1]

When Yankee Stadium closed in September, most of the players scooped up dirt to take home as a souvenir as did assorted cops, team employees and others who were on the field after the game.

Meanwhile, Steiner Sports is doing a brisk business selling “game-used” dirt. [2]

Now the Yankees are having a private ceremony on Saturday to take dirt from the old Stadium over to the new Stadium.

This release from the team:

The New York Yankees and selected local Bronx youth organizations will hold a symbolic dual-Stadium ceremony on Saturday, November 8 at noon (rain or shine). The event will begin at the original Yankee Stadium, where several members of the Yankees’ 1998 World Championship team will join students from Bronx-area schools in removing dirt from the home plate area and pitcher’s mound. They will then walk across the street to the new Yankee Stadium and place the dirt in the corresponding locations in the Yankees’ new Stadium.

It’s not open to the public. Not there would be much to see anyway.
