Girardi: Moose wants to retire

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Nov 07, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

A little bit of news out of the Joe Torre charity event tonight in Manhattan:

Joe Girardi revealed for the first time that Mike Mussina told him after the season that he planned to retire. He has not heard from Moose since.

Andy Pettitte, contrary to some reports, said he wants only a one-year deal and he wants only to play for the Yankees. He is hoping a deal gets done soon.

Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera said their respective shoulder rehabs are going well and both expect to be ready for spring training. Keep in mind, however, they have not started throwing yet. Posada said he is a catcher and has no interest in playing first base.

Derek Jeter has spoken to CC Sabathia since the end of the season. He didn’t go into details but clearly the recruiting process is underway.

Don Mattingly, who looked five years younger and happy as can be, said he wants to manage.

More later, including audio and photos, once I finish my newspaper story.

2008 is the year of the Moose!

  2. Doreen November 7th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Thanks, Pete. As always, good information.

I wonder what Moose is waiting for?

Glad to hear the Mariano and Jorge are positive, understanding that they haven’t thrown yet, of course.

  3. RonH November 7th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Thanks Pete. Glad to hear Derek is recruiting and Donnie is doing well.

  4. derrick November 7th, 2008 at 7:48 pm

so if pettitte wants to come back to the yankees, and the yankees want him back, what are we waiting for?

and if moose has known since the end of the season that he wants to retire, what are we waiting for?

sorry for the impatience but the offseason is a little slow for my taste, i want to see things start happening!

  5. Josiah from NC November 7th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

Wonder if Trisha still thinks Moose is coming back.

Good for Moose to go out on top! We will miss him!

  6. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)! November 7th, 2008 at 7:59 pm

“Derek Jeter has spoken to CC Sabathia since the end of the season. He didn’t go into details but clearly the recruiting process is underway.”

    Good boy Derek!

  7. *hangs head in shame* November 7th, 2008 at 8:00 pm

So how shallow is it that I want to know if Derek was there with Minka?

  8. Jorge (México) November 7th, 2008 at 8:01 pm

If Moose retires, he’d be going out by the front door. He deserved a season like 2008.

Good to hear the Captain is talking to CC.

I hope an agreement with Andy to come ASAP. But, Derrick, don’t be so impatient. We’ll have to wait at least two more weeks before hearing about a FA sign. Offseason has just begun.

  9. jennifer November 7th, 2008 at 8:01 pm

Hey I’ll see Moose in January, I recruit him to return. :)

  10. David November 7th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

If I understand Pete correctly, Moose told Joe at the end of October or early November that he wanted to retire. However, he subsequently told his agent that he hasn’t made up his mind. I don’t know if Moose is really reconsidering Maybe it’s wishful thinking on the part of his agent. I will hope for Moose’s return until I hear a definite public comment from him

  11. Brad November 7th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

Mussina is leaving a door slightly ajar to see what develops with free agent signings but likely wants to go out on a high note with his best season ever and hold his head high.
If he told Girardi that he plans to retire then Cashman knows it and is making plans accordingly.

  12. Mark in Tampa November 7th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

Maybe this is Girardi mis-information. Hasn’t he been doing it all year with injuries?

  13. vtred November 7th, 2008 at 8:24 pm

    Mark,

I was just thinking that lol, that liar Girardi is up to his old tricks.

  14. Clint November 7th, 2008 at 8:26 pm

Thats why Jeter is the captain.

He didn’t even need to be asked to call CC, he did it on his own when the season ended.

Are they friends? I’m not sure if they ever crossed paths.

  15. Buddy Biancalana November 7th, 2008 at 8:26 pm

Moose could be having 2nd thoughts.

  16. saucy November 7th, 2008 at 8:28 pm

At first glance I thought the title to this post was: Girardi wants Moose to retire.

  17. Doreen November 7th, 2008 at 8:34 pm

    Clint -

Aren’t you making a huge assumption there? That Jeter did this on his own? You don’t know that for sure.

  18. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)! November 7th, 2008 at 8:40 pm

Maybe we should send CC a nice fruit/gift basket or something? Hickory Farms?
We can help in wooing him too.. ;)

    Maybe this: http://tinyurl.com/55fvoj

  19. Doreen November 7th, 2008 at 8:41 pm

    SA -

Not Hickory Farms == Harry & David or Mrs. Fields! Or the Popcorn Factory!!!

  20. MoBoy(aka McLovin) November 7th, 2008 at 8:41 pm

Mussina going out in a high note. But not that high.He never won a world series.

  21. Tom November 7th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

Screw a gift basket. Give him this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/simmermon/1701939589/

I think he’d like this more.

  22. Doreen November 7th, 2008 at 8:45 pm

    Tom -

    EWWWW!

  23. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)! November 7th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

    Oh! The Popcorn factory!
CC would love something from there..I think.

    He um..might like that..stuff..too Tom..um..

So back to the gift baskets.. :P

  24. Tom November 7th, 2008 at 8:48 pm

Don’t Mock ’till you try it!

  25. saucy November 7th, 2008 at 8:49 pm

Yeah, ewwwww indeed. Those nuggets need some sweet and sour sauce on them!

  26. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)! November 7th, 2008 at 8:50 pm

Maybe we should just get him a gift certificate to McDonalds?

  27. RockinDabronx November 7th, 2008 at 8:51 pm

    lol, thats some good eats.

  28. saucy November 7th, 2008 at 8:55 pm

Maybe we should just get him a McDonalds?

  29. vinny-b (Hank Blalock for 1st base) November 7th, 2008 at 8:57 pm

“Maybe we should just get him a gift certificate to McDonalds”

    or just a McDonalds

  30. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)! November 7th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

We could remind him that he if comes to the yankees, he can buy his own McDonalds. Maybe even 2 or 3? Heck..make it 4.

And he will have lotsa money left over to even buy a few Burger Kings!

  31. chris November 7th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

when a player as respected as Jeter calls, you listen. And I hope Donny enjoys his time in California because a day will come that he’s managing the yanks.

  32. Mark (Brett is back) November 7th, 2008 at 9:33 pm

“He’s asked questions, yeah, about it,” said Jeter, who got to know Sabathia as an opponent and All-Star Game teammate. “I’ll leave it at that.
“I’m not trying to sell anyone on New York. I don’t think you have to sell people on playing in this organization. People have questions, but it’s not like I have a sales pitch.”

Quotes from the cap from nj.com

  33. dan 771 November 7th, 2008 at 9:38 pm

why doesn’t hank call sabathia too?

  34. geO November 7th, 2008 at 9:43 pm

nice too know that Pettite has fallen in love with New York again and believe it’s his only destination instead of Houston.

Good for Mussina, he should leave on a good note but with no ring :( Reminds me of a Michael Strahan without the ring.

  35. mel November 7th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

    Pete,

Did Joe say that Moose wants to retire or did he say that Moose told him at the time that he wanted to retire?

Also, I know Jorge is not throwing, but do you know if he’ll be hitting? He’s listed on one of the Caribbean rosters as an OF of all things. Along with his good ole buddy Bernie Williams.

  36. dan 771 November 7th, 2008 at 10:02 pm

“Posada said he is a catcher and has no interest in playing first base.”

Hopefully now people can stop trying to put him there. He said no for the 100th time.

  37. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 7th, 2008 at 10:10 pm

My god if your the Giants how do you allow the RedSkins to land DeAngelo Hall.

  38. just on old fashion love song November 7th, 2008 at 10:15 pm

Just to jump into the fray here…

Mussina might very well have been thinking retirement at the very end of the Yankee season. Probably with the early exit and his 20th win fresh in his mind. With some time going by, doubts creep in.

Last year Pettitte was not sure he was going to return and it looked more and more likely that he was retiring.

Things change, feelings change. Some of Pettitte’s decision was probably linked to the trade talks at the winter meeting. Mussina might be looking at some of the moves the Yankees are talking about and thinking there could be enough changes coming up that would give a legitimate shot at the WS. At this point in his career its about legacy. A WS ring would mean so much to him. He didn’t slow down and break down last season. All these things may come into play.

That might be the reason behind his not making an announcement. While he could have been quite serious when he last talked to Girardi, talk is cheap, making the final move is much tougher. Just look at Favre.

I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that more than just Jeter is working on the recruitment of CC. The club has made the desire pretty well known, and players like Jeter and Damon can start talking to him without tampering if the do it on their own.

The new Stadium will be a draw, the bullpen looks to be strong. Other moves they are contemplating will all play a role, along with the paycheck.

  39. Fredo Corleone November 7th, 2008 at 10:16 pm

“My god if your the Giants how do you allow the RedSkins to land DeAngelo Hall”

Better question is if you’re the Redskins, why do you want him. Overrated piece of bleep punk is all he is.

  40. mel November 7th, 2008 at 10:17 pm

    Found this at Jennings’ site:

What’s the last part mean? Does he mean that FA signings could force Hughes & Aceves to the 3A staff?

*At the end of the email I originally sent to Newman I included a throw away line about Jeff Marquez (left) and Kevin Whelan pitcihng well in Arizona and making a push for spots on the Triple-A pitching staff. I said they were making it tougher to figure out who might pitch in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre next season.

It wasn’t really a question, but for what it’s worth, this was Newman’s response:

“You are right the 3A pitching staff will be tough to make for several reasons. The amount of prospects as well as who we may sign at the major league level.”*

  41. pat November 7th, 2008 at 10:18 pm

From Lisa Guerrero’s column from the LA Times.

She says she’s in Arizona this weekend with hubby Scott Erickson to attend Kevin Long’s wedding (I thought he was already married?) and got the following info from Kevin.

Joe Torre wanted Kevin to go to LA with him but he stayed in NY becuase he felt loyalty to the Yanks for giving him his shot in the majors.

Kevin said Manny’s not the Dodger who could most improve the Yankees in 2009. He thinks Cash might make Derek Lowe a bigger priority.

“We need to solidify our starting pitching,” he told me. “We were the only team in baseball last year with less than three starters that threw 100 innings (Mike Mussina and Andy Pettitte). We have to address the pitching situation first.”

In terms of Manny, Kevin adds, “He’d be a great fit for the Yankees. We’d love to have him. We have the resources and it’s hard not to think about what the Yankees could do with him in the lineup. You’d have to say that if we shored up our rotation and get Manny, we’d be the front-runner next year.”

  42. 7 UP November 7th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

D’Angelo Hall may be the most overrated player in football. He goes to probowls because he gets picks but he gets burned 10 times for every pick. He is selfish and a cancer too. Reese is all about character guys.

  43. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)! November 7th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

“My god if your the Giants how do you allow the RedSkins to land DeAngelo Hall.”

The guy is mad overrated. Let the redskins have him

  44. Oddessy November 7th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

In his eight games in Oakland, Hall was beaten 40 times for 552 yards on 66 passes thrown his way, according to data compiled by STATS LLC. He gave up more yards than any defender this season and was tied for third worst in catches allowed.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/ne.....;type=lgns

    Can you say overrated?

  45. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 7th, 2008 at 10:21 pm

“Better question is if you’re the Redskins, why do you want him. Overrated piece of bleep punk is all he is.”

He signed for the minimum $240,000 and upgrades the depth of thier DBs, no offense but I love Webster but Aaron Ross has not been getting it done right now and we are weak at the DB position, atleast if we would have signed Hall you have a legit option had Webster or Ross gotten hurt, on top of that other than Ross we have Tyrell Thomas who is not ready.

  46. Doris from Rego Park November 7th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

Do you think he missed her finger with the ring the way he taught the yankees hitters to miss?

  47. mel November 7th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

    pat,

Thanks for that. Long’s a pretty chatty cat, huh? That pretty much debunks the theory that Manny’s not on the Yankees’ radar.

I’m okay with Lowe, but he won’t be as dominant as he was in LA.

  48. Mark (Brett is back) November 7th, 2008 at 10:23 pm

Just go back to TO burning him vs the Falcons, and then spitting in his face for good measure haha.

  49. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 7th, 2008 at 10:23 pm

“He is selfish and a cancer too. Reese is all about character guys.”

That’s the only reason which if Reese chose I would have to side w/ him because he has yet to make a mistake.

  50. Doris from Rego Park November 7th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

And why exactly do we want Pettite back? He was TERRIBLE the 2nd half. Let’s turn the page here folks; it isnt 1999.

  51. Fredo Corleone November 7th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

I hear you Brandon. Hall doesn’t solve any problems up here and gives Plax a partner in asswipehood.

  52. Weather Man November 7th, 2008 at 10:26 pm

Hall passed through waivers— any team with secondary help could have picked him up. He would sign for the minimum and is a “pro bowler”. Contenders like the Cowboys, Pats, Broncos, Bears, Steelers, Chargers, Saints, etc. all needed corners and they didn’t take him.

He said he wanted to go to the Cowboys and they have one of the worst secondaries in the NFL and even he was too big of a headache for Jerry Jones to take on– that should tell us all we need to know about him.

  53. pat November 7th, 2008 at 10:27 pm

    mel

Sounds like they are looking for a middle/back end of the rotation innings eater. Domination would be a bonus.

  54. R-Tek November 7th, 2008 at 10:30 pm

The Raiders obviously released him for a reason, they gave up a 2nd round pick for him and signed him to a 7 year extension. I mean, thats unprecedented. He must have done some things behind closed doors that ticked them off that much.

I read a blurb in the Atlanta Journal Constitution that said he went to pick a fight with a former teammate (the Raiders were playing the Falcons) in the visitor’s tunnel instead of attending pregame warmups or something. He must have done several things like that during his 8 games for them to release him

  55. Braintrust November 7th, 2008 at 10:34 pm

I think Moose is doing the team a solid, and waiting to announce his retirement until the team gets Sabathia. I expect Sabathia to be signed by the 21st of this month. The Yankees offer is just going to shut down all competition, it won’t even be fair to the rest of baseball. It’s going to be the Yankees offering the contract, CC signing, and the press conference announcing…done.

  56. Jack Knight November 7th, 2008 at 10:45 pm

Your #1 priority should have been to snap a photo of Laura Posada. I’m not really interested in awkward expressions made by Andy Pettite.

  57. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 7th, 2008 at 10:56 pm

Not even going to the next thread.

  58. rover November 8th, 2008 at 8:21 am

I do really hope Moose makes it back. He for me anyway is a joy to watch. So much more going on than throwing the baseball. Its like every hitter is another chess game. Then of course he seems to be well liked in the locker room, that seems to make the guys play a bit more intensely for him. That in itself is an asset.

  59. mmx November 8th, 2008 at 7:05 pm

If Moose wants to retire, he should come out and tell everyboy, not through Girardi’s mouth. Maybe it’s Girardi who did not want Moose to come back?

  60. Yanksfan09 November 8th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

We need Moose back next year to give the rotation stability at the back end.

He’s also finally seemed to have adjusted to his stuff and turned the corner so the extra year or two could cement his HOFer status and give him an outside shot at 300, something which I imagine will become almost unheard of in the present age.
