Today in The Journal News
The GM Meetings didn’t produce any deals. But the Yankees got a sense of what they could do down the road. For now, that means no Jake Peavy but maybe Mike Cameron.
Mike Mussina won another Gold Glove. This Yankees notebook also has updates on the coaching staff changes, Damaso Marte and a ceremony tomorrow.

Just got home after a red-eye flight from Orange County to Newark. Headed to the Joe Torre charity event this event in the hopes of interviewing Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and whoever else is there. So check back later on. For now, it’s time for a nap.
Also, don’t forget to listen to WFAN on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sweeny Murti and Ed Coleman will be live from the Best Buy on 23rd and 6th and will have Joe Girardi on as a guest.

don’t look now, the organization suddenly have LHP’s
Marte (hopefully retained
Coke (may contend for starters role)
DeLaRosa (high ceiling starter)
Banuelos (the best NYY prospect you haven’t heard of)
Bleich (may move fast)
Dunn (sleeper next year?)
Chase Wright (HR immortality)
Garrett Patterson (able to hit 97)
I think we should sign Tex, and sign Lowe.
Reasons for Tex:
He is a once in a decade free agent first baseman: switch-hitting, gold glove, hits for power and average. The risk of signing a position player is far less than a pitcher. We have a glaring need at 1B. We did not sign Posada to play 1B. Tex is from the North East, so he is familiar with the atmosphere and expectations.
Reasons for Lowe:
He chews innings. Look at Ponson, and Rasner. Both of them stayed in our rotation for about half a season last year for the sole fact that they could eat innings, but not necessarily pitch well. Lowe has averaged over 200 innings a season since he became a starter in 2002. He pitches well in the postseason, and has clearly stated he wants to play for a winner – which means he is a competitor.
Reasons against CC:
Too much money. Just because money is off the books does not mean we need to spend it. He is not good in the post season. The Brewers abused his arm. He may not have the mental makeup to pitch in NY.
Reasons against AJ:
Not reliably healthy, or even consistent when healthy.
Lowe wants to pitch for BOS. I don’t want anyone who doesn’t really want to be here.
“Reasons against CC:
Too much money. Just because money is off the books does not mean we need to spend it. He is not good in the post season. The Brewers abused his arm. He may not have the mental makeup to pitch in NY.”
Crazy. He has a Cy Young in the AL. Big durable southpaw with a rubber arm and excellent injury history.
Like Wells, this is all about innings so we can develope the young guys. Makes sense on so many levels.
“Lowe wants to pitch for BOS. I don’t want anyone who doesn’t really want to be here.”
Sabathia doesn’t want to be here either. Anyone have a problem with him?
Yankees should sign CC, AJ, Teix and stay away from Lowe.
Reason for CC:
Lefty power arm. Great secondary pitches. Great heart. Easy fluid motion. When used properly and not abused, should be very good in post season. Yankee’s #1 weapon is money. Now is the time to use it on a #1 Starter.
Reason for AJ:
Power righty arm with swing and miss stuff up and down. When he is on, he is unhittable. When he is off, he is still able to pitch at low to mid 90′s. Good pitching motion that is compact. At this stage, AJ reminds me of Jason Schmit when he first went over to SF. Should be good for 3-4 years as a front line starter.
Reason for Teix:
Ability to make consistent contact with the bat. Great lefty swing. Good righty swing. Great defense for 1B. If he is willing to sign for 6-7 years, Yankees should out bid all to sign him.
Reasons against Lowe:
Age. Lowe is too old. Lowe does not have power stuff. Lowe benefited from pitching in Dodger stadium. Lowe can not survive consistently against power and patient lineups of AL. Lowe would be a #4 starter looking for #1 starter money. No way could he do well in AL East.
“Sabathia doesn’t want to be here either. Anyone have a problem with him?”
That hasn’t been proven yet, Fredo. That’s been speculation. Lowe’s agent said that he wanted to go to BOS. That’s different.
If it turns out that the rumors are true and CC wants to stay in the NL or go to a Cali team, then yes – I don’t want him either.
Up until next Friday (11/14), it will be the last slow week until just before the pitchers and catchers report to ST in February.
Laura:
It’s pretty much been proven and the Yankees know it, which is why they appear prepared to go, according to many, 30%-40% beyond what any other team will offer.
If the Angels offer the same money as the Yankees, he’s going to the Angels. Same with the Dodgers.
“It’s pretty much been proven and the Yankees know it, which is why they appear prepared to go, according to many, 30%-40% beyond what any other team will offer.”
Pretty much isn’t a 100% certainty. Could all just be posturing by his agent to suck as much money out of the Yankees as they can. What else is new. For all we know, he could want to come to the Yankees and all of this is just a money/years maker.
“If it turns out that the rumors are true and CC wants to stay in the NL or go to a Cali team, then yes – I don’t want him either.”
thats positively nuts.
I think this will fall on deaf ears but if you look back to Lowe in the AL, the way he TYPICALLY had meltdowns, you might think twice.
In fact, here, I’ll let you look for yourselves. Take a look at his ERA during his last years with the Sux.
http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/indiv.....statType=2
Why anyone would even consider having him pitch for the Yankees when it was a well known fact that he didn’t do well under the glare of the high-pressure spotlight is beyond me. Don’t let a game or two in the postseason fool you. He was playing for his contract during those one or two games.
The rest of the time he was Derek being Derek.
In the mellow pastures of the west coast, playing for the NL, he has managed to enjoy life. May he continue to do so – out there. The guy is a major headcase. Let any Sux fan give you the lowdown – or other Yankee fans like me who live in the Sux back yard.
On a happy note, well happy for me, I will be taking the Stadium Tour tomorrow. Had I remembered the Foundation banquet tonight I might have been tempted to play papparazzi. But we have tickets for Radio City instead.
Trisha – have fun tomorrow. Maybe you’ll get to see some of the event at the Stadium tomorrow. They have Bronx high school kids and members of the 1998 Yankee championship team scooping dirt from the old stadium and taking it over to the new one.
“Why anyone would even consider having him pitch for the Yankees when it was a well known fact that he didn’t do well under the glare of the high-pressure spotlight is beyond me.”
Not terribly high on Lowe for this year and beyond, though I think he’s far more reliable than Burnett (don’t want him either), but how can anyone possibly say he hasn’t thrived in high pressure spots???? His postseasons have been quite good and include some very clutch, high pressure efforts.
Yeah, I’m not worried about my feelings being hurt that C.C. ideally would prefer to pitch somewhere else. The guy’s too good for that. He’ll adjust. You can’t really believe the gushing the other way, either, when players talk about how they’d always wanted to be a Yankee, blah, blah, blah. It’s true for some – like Giambi, because his father was obsessed with Mantle, and some do appreciate the tradition, but for the most part all the hyperbole in these things is a crock.
As for Derek Lowe not wanting to play here, I don’t care what he wants, because I don’t want him. He’s the epitome of mediocrity.
Sabathia is a stud, and unlike the Santana non-deal – which I am glad never went off – it’s only money, so give him a bundle and hopefully yearnings to be elsewhere won’t matter.
“Let any Sux fan give you the lowdown”
Can it be? A Sox fan and Trisha actually agreeing!
I have to agree that I don’t think that Lowe is the answer the Yankees need or the Sox either.
He had a reputation for being a headcase particularly his last two years with Boston.
Thoughts on Marte??? Yankees sign him to a 2-3 year deal at a more reasonable number than $6M or let him go to FA (and likely the Mets) for picks???
“Thoughts on Marte???”
they’ll get him signed long(er) term. i’m not too worried.
Turn Two:
I agree. I’d like to see the Yankees get it done pre 11/14, as I do think the Mets, with their putrid pen, may well overpay to get him.
There is no rush in making any signings official until after the Rule 5 Draft. As long as they reach an agreement with Mussina, Marte, Pettitte and the rest, they can save spots on the forty man roster, and give them the time to trade some players for needed help.
Thanks Fran! I am really excited about the entire trip. I am getting ready to take my Amtrak trek. I think I must have been a train conductor in another life because I absolutely love and am fascinated by trains. My favorite mode of transportation.
Hopefully I’ll get some good pictures.
Fredo,
I think the Yankees are in a win-win with Marte and are daring him to sign with another team (in a good way because it’ll be financially beneficial to him). They need him, but don’t really neeeeed him. Marte will be a hot commodity if we don’t lock him up, so he really doesn’t need us either.
I would’ve preferred they picked up the option, because it was short term. Not thrilled with longer contracts for relievers, although Marte would probably be the exception.
But if we lose Marte and keep Edwar, I’ll probably lose it.
I’m not sure yet on Marte. He’s been consistently good during his career, unlike some other relievers who have received big money so I think he’s a safe bet for a 2 or 3 year contract. However, I don’t like spending a lot of money on the bullpen and those 2 picks sound pretty good right now. The Yankees already have 2 first round picks, they could get another 2 1st rounders and 2 supplemental picks from Marte/Abreu and a supplemental for Pudge. Thats 7 picks at the top of the draft, and could go a LONG way to helping the farm system.
I see no reason why Marte would take a discount to stay with the Yanks and on the open market he could probably get a 4 yrs, 20 million. (Thats what Linebrink got last year and Marte is better and a lefty) I’ll pass on that deal and take the picks.
“Thats 7 picks at the top of the draft, and could go a LONG way to helping the farm system.”
the point is still to win mlb games though, right?
“the point is still to win mlb games though, right?”
If you can’t see the value of having a strong farm system then I have nothing for ya..
Patrick:
Remember they’ll lose their 1st and 2nd rounders by signing Sabathia and another Type A, so they’d be back to 5. Still pretty good though.
“If you can’t see the value of having a strong farm system then I have nothing for ya..”
people here seem to forget that the idea is to win championships.
it’s nice to get picks to build the farm if Marte goes elswehere, but every effort should be made to retain him, because he is a weapon for a bullpen on a championship winning team.
Other problem with letting Marte go is that he’s not so expensive that a Bottom 15 team couldn’t sign him (read: the Tigers) and then you don’t get a 1st rounder. Still get the sandwich pick and Detroit’s 2nd rounder, but in a weak draft class, that may not be so great.
Patrick – Remember they also have the replacements picks for Cole and Bittle. They have the potential to load up. It will give them the potential to sign free agents and keep some picks in the top rounds, or just stockpile. I have no idea what this draft looks like, but having several first, supplemental and second round picks cannot be bad.
One thing – I thought I saw that Pudge might be a type A. Has there been a definitive announcement?
“One thing – I thought I saw that Pudge might be a type A. Has there been a definitive announcement?”
just missed- Type B, which might actually work out better.
Turn Two:
Sort of agree. Yankees need a solid, proven lefty in the pen. Coke could potentially be that guy, but he’s not now.
“Coke could potentially be that guy, but he’s not now.”
and if you have MArte in the pen, you can allow Coke to work out of the Scranton rotation to start the season, and see if he sticks there first.
you can move him back to the bp if that doesnt work… but he’s more valuable as a starter than a reliever.
Turn Two – Thank you.
Coke it sounds may have the possibility of sticking as a starter – although that probably depends on who gets signed this offseason.
You have Melancon ready. Dunn will probably move fast and is comparable if not better than Coke out of the pen.
I’m not a GM but I sort of hope this Mike Cameron roomer is not true. I feel like there are some much better and younger CF options.
I want Marte too but its absurd to give him a 4 year deal @ 5 million per year which is about what he would get on the open market.
Why would the Yankees decline the 6 million option and then sign him to 3 extra years with only 1 million less AAV? Obviously I’m just speculating on his contract but he would get AT LEAST as much as Scott Linebrink did last year.
Marte is one of the few relievers that are good every year and he’s a lefty to boot. Of course I want him on the team but I don’t think he’s worth the contract he will get. Getting two high picks for a reliever is a steal as far as I’m concerned.
Also, TurnTwo, you are pretty short-sighted if you don’t see how a great farm system can help win championships. It not only helps future Yankee squads, it allows Cashman more flexibility during the trade deadline. A strong farm system allows Cashman to trade prospects and strengthen the present team.
*rumor
“Also, TurnTwo, you are pretty short-sighted if you don’t see how a great farm system can help win championships.”
oh stop. noone here is short-sighted. id just rather have a lockdown lefty in the pen for the next 3-4 years than take 2 extra draft picks out of an allegedly weak draft class who are no guarantee to help us 3-4-5 years from now.
Coke: 14 innings last year, 14 K’s, 2 BB.
Marte is a very good lefty option out of the bullpen, but, please….he’s not in any sense of the prase, “a lockdown lefty”.

Yeah, and two of them are on our team. I don’t see the logic at all, here. The short-gap measure until the arrival of AJax isn’t convincing. This guy Cameron is a strikeout machine, and he’s old, to boot.
Let Melky and Gardner handle. Whoever’s hitting. Cameron does not upgrade this team.

Remarkably similar to the numbers that Kennedy put uo in 2007. Let’s see what he does over a longer period of time before getting him ready for Cooperstown. Coke should be good in the pen, but, let’s please hold off on things a bit.

And he’s still better than anyone else available on the current mrket and on the Yankees.
***market***
The problem with Melky and Gardner is that they can’t hit, although I think they should just tell Melky to only hit from the left side and see what happens.
Cameron had an .800 OPS last year which is excellent for a CF and the fact is he is a much better player than either Gardner or Melky. If they can get him I think they should. He’d immediately make the team better.
just looked at some comments regarding the AL gold gloves at espn’s site. almost expected some Sox fans crying over Mussina winning one. but of course they’re crying over Youkilis.
I left this comment over there:
“just browsing come comments, and the legions of Sox fans crying for Youkilis are amazing (but expected). i can easily cry about Jose Molina getting snubbed. Or Mark Ellis for 2B…
These have been popularity contests for a while now (see Palmiero). While I don’t think the writers do a good job voting for MVP/Cy/etc, the managers/coaches do an even worse job. Fan voting would be even more of a disaster…
That said, Rawlings should select a committee to vote. Ex-Players, Scouts, and even some writers. To me, this is probably something managers/coaches look at as a more of a burden than anything. The season is over and they probably just want to go home. “
Jeez Green, if I can’t get excited about 14 solid innings then what? Just because the Headcase Ian Kennedy stunk it up after a few solid outings doesn’t mean I’m going to look at everything else doom-and-gloom. I prefer to stay cautiously optimistic about our players.
“but, please….he’s not in any sense of the prase, “a lockdown leftyâ€.”
ok… how about one of the top 3 LH relief pitchers in baseball?
point being, id rather take his value to this team in the bullpen over the next 3 years than whatever value youd get from the 2 draft picks.
you take the draft picks as consolation, but you shouldnt rather have the picks that Marte in the pen.
I’d like to see Coke given to opportunity to start.
“The problem with Melky and Gardner is that they can’t hit”
I’m not giving up on Gardner yet. He is a plus defender, one of the fastest guys in the game. He played infrequently for 3 months with the Yankees. 3 months!
In September he hit .283 with .321 OBP. If he could keep up his September production, you wouldn’t take that? He doesn’t have power but he has potential for leadoff if he can work some more walks. There is nothing in the minors that suggests he couldn’t get on base at a good enough clip to be a weapon.
Russell,
The fact that Gardner is a strike out machine, who hs no power and can’t even bunt suggests to me that he won’t have a lot of big league success. I could be wrong though and I hope that I am wrong.
I know you didn’t say you were excited over 14 big league innings. My behind nearly fell off from laughing so hard.
“you take the draft picks as consolation, but you shouldnt rather have the picks that Marte in the pen.”
For some reason you are completely ignoring my argument about the contract the Yankees would need to sign Marte to. They aren’t getting him for a discount, he would likely get a 3 or 4 year deal at 5 mil per. Perhaps even more than that considering that he’s a lefty.
I’m torn between wanting Marte on the team and NOT wanting to pay him for 4 years. The extra draft picks just put it over the top in favor of not signing him.
I’d prefer Coke in the bullpen, his ceiling is much higher there. As a reliever he can hit 94 (as we saw in September) but as a starter he’s lucky to sit at 90. I guess it makes sense to at least give him a shot at starting though I’d rather have him in the pen.
I think the Yankees should avoid Lowe. He is not as good as he was in Boston and his numbers this year are mostly due to him pitching in the NL West. CC and AJ are the two best options.
Marte is as close to a “lock down” lefty as you’ll find. I liked what I saw from Coke, but I also have some reservation from March or September numbers. Especially in a lot of non playoff race games.
Even .281 w/ .320 OBP is light for a 9th hitter. Thats the minimum as far as I’m concerned. Gardner is clearly suited to be a 4th outfielder, pinch runner, defensive replacement ,etc.
“Dunn will probably move fast and is comparable if not better than Coke out of the pen”
I can tell you right now that Dunn is better than Coke, stuff wise and velocity.
“Marte (hopefully retained
Coke (may contend for starters role)
DeLaRosa (high ceiling starter)
Banuelos (the best NYY prospect you haven’t heard of)
Bleich (may move fast)
Dunn (sleeper next year?)
Chase Wright (HR immortality)
Garrett Patterson (able to hit 97)”
Vinny-b Patterson might be another Phil Coke he is finally healthy and is going to be interesting to follow, I’d still put Angel Reyes above him. Interesting how quick things have a way of showing. 2009 I’d say look out definitely for Dunn and De La Rosa, Patterson could be trade bait or another Phil Coke one thing scouts say is his stuff is too good to ignore and LHP that dial it up to 97-98 aren’t easy to ignore, as for Banuelos he’s 17 yrs. old and has been compared to Scott Kazmir w/ his build a fastball that goes up to 95 mph w/ a nasty hammer.
Ray – am I supposed to be upset, not care maybe? Maybe anything the guy does until he reaches 30 innings is insignificant? I’ll be sure to calm my nerves when a guy gives me 14 K’s in 14. Yes, I’m excited about 14 innings.
And I’ll be pissed when he gives me 14 BB in 14. But until then, lets hold off on laughing at me because I get excited when my players succeed.
And I think Gardner will be better than you are suggesting.
“I know you didn’t say you were excited over 14 big league innings. My behind nearly fell off from laughing so hard.”
To be fair, Russell in dicated CAUTIOUS optimism, which to me is OK.
I’m not the Coke fan many seem to be. He’s not a kid (turns 27 next season) and he’s never been particularly dominant in the minors. He’s been good, but not great. The 14 MLB innings were impressive, but they were in garbage time.
I’d prefer to see the Yankees keep him in the capacity he was used in September. Think that’s the way he can best help the team. Don’t see a real high ceiling here, but do believe as a reasonably hard throwing lefty, he can be helpful to the ’09 edition of the Yankees.
Even .281 w/ .320 OBP is light for a 9th hitter. Thats the minimum as far as I’m concerned. Gardner is clearly suited to be a 4th outfielder, pinch runner, defensive replacement ,etc.
______________
Why is it ok for other teams to have a player with those figures, but we can’t?
Why do we need an all-star at all positions?
Why can’t we have flexibility in our roster?
Why can’t it be April already?
What Phil Coke did in September, while not guaranteeing anything for 2009, is certainly encouraging. It’s a lot better than if he had bombed.
I agree that the best thing for him and the us might be to not get too fancy, and just let him come to ST and work out of the bullpen. He can certainly help us out of there.
For people comparing Coke and Kennedy they are way off, Kennedy had 2 pitches when he first came up, Coke has 3, Kennedy could only dial it to 92 mph, Coke on a given batter can go up 96 mph, it’s not until he developed the slider that he turned in the minors, add the change up and it’s just to hard to pass up, he also did this infront of the watchful eye of G.I. Joe & Harky & Eiland which I bet they know a thing or two more about pitching than the previous evaluators.
“Why is it ok for other teams to have a player with those figures, but we can’t?”
Well if you want to finish in third place every year then I guess its fine but .280 avg .320 obp is pretty bad. Especially when the hitter will be lucky to hit 1 or 2 HR every 500 AB’s. Low OBP + no power = bad
Gardner is a good fielder, has great speed and can slap the ball around a bit. Sounds like a great 4th or 5th outfielder to me.
Also if we’re talking about pressure pitching for him all you have to do is look to the series vs Boston in Fenway and the last game in Yankees Stadium vs Baltimore on primetime t.v. what he was able to do for Pettitte in that game was just amazing.
Fredo,
Isn’t the old saying never get excited about what you see in September and in March?
I’d love to see Coke succeed, but I’m not going to get excited over 14 innings. The sample size is waaaaay too small to get excited about in my opinion.
Brandon I don’t think people are comparing Kennedy to Coke talent-wise. They are just using Kennedy as an example to show that we shouldn’t trust September results.
Patrick i’s not that we shouldn’t trust Sept. stats it’s more like you don’t go 100 % by them, stuff wise he’s got it but there are definitely people here using IPK as an example to Coke, which really doesn’t make sense, because stuff wise you have to be blind not to see the difference.

I was not comparing Kennedy and Coke. All I said was that Coke’s 2008 numbers and Kennedy’s 2007 numbers were similar and that people should not expect Coke to be Sandy Koufax or Ron Guidry just yet. Numbers are too small to make a guarantee on what Coke produces in 2009.
Ray:
Preaching to the choir.
The 14 innings were nice, but they were rocking chair innings because nothing was at stake.
As I said, I’m not the fan of Coke that folks like Brandon are. I see potentially useful, but nothing special.
BA to post the Yankees Top 10 prospects on Monday. Already know Melancon is #9. Would assume Jackson is #1 and Montero #2. Any guesses on the rest?
Fredo,
I prefer Pepsi, myself.
In no particular order:
Jackson, Montero, -Tabata-, Brackman, Melancon, Kennedy,
OMG, I’m struggling to come up with 10 really good prospects.
Mel:
Kennedy won’t qualify (more than 50 MLB innings).
McAllister, Romine and perhaps Betances will end up in there along with Ajax, Montero, Brackman and Melancon. Maybe Gardner, who narrowly qualifies (127 AB’s – 130 would leave him out of prospect status).
I would say this is the top 10(not in order):
Mark Melancon
Austin Jackson
Andrew Brackman
Dellin Betances
Jesus Montero
Austin Romine
Wilkins De La Rosa
Ian Kennedy
Humberto Sanchez
Phil Coke
I forgot Mcallister, eh switch him for IPK.
Mark Melancon
Austin Jackson
Andrew Brackman
Dellin Betances
Jesus Montero
Austin Romine
Wilkins De La Rosa
Ian Kennedy
Humberto Sanchez
Phil Coke
______________
That’s going to be some team, whenever it develops
Fredo,
Even though Sanchez has really struggled in the dry air in AFL, he’s probably in that group, too.
Any thoughts on the top 10 in the minors? None of our guys will make it, but Posey and Alonso have been tearing it up in Hawaii. The pitching studs seem to be Hanson & Scherzer (would he be inelible?)
Al:
Kennedy won’t be in. Doesn’t qualify.
I’d guess Laird would come ahead of De La Rosa, Coke (don’t think he’s on the list) and Sanchez.
In no particular order:
Jackson
Mcallister
Montero
Romine
Barkman
Coke (still has “rookie” status)
Melancon
Sanchez (still has “rookie” status)
Miranda\Laird
Betances
Tom,
I’ve seen evaluators not include players if they’re part of the big club plans (like Coke). Am I wrong on that?
we need a ‘Jack’ for the bullpen, to go along with Coke…
Just my guess for a Top 10… Jackson, Montero, Brackman, Betances, McAllister, Romine, Laird, Heredia, Melancon, DeLa Rosa.
Mel, last year Joba was on a few prospect lists. I think.
Yanks in 2010 ;
Mark Melancon will be ready in 2009 as well as Phil Coke. Kennedy carries question marks.
Jack & Coke would be awesome for the bullpen. Joba would have two new best friends.
rconn23:
You’re list looks pretty good in terms of names and order.
Mel:
Any pitcher with less than 50 MLB innings and any player with less than 130 MLB at bats have prospect status for most enitities that do these rankings.
Tom,
That’s true. I question putting Coke on there just because he had a breakout season with the big league club. He’s not even a prospect, not on anyone’s radar. He just kind of exploded.
“For some reason you are completely ignoring my argument about the contract the Yankees would need to sign Marte to. They aren’t getting him for a discount, he would likely get a 3 or 4 year deal at 5 mil per. Perhaps even more than that considering that he’s a lefty.”
no, i’m not ignoring your argument. i couldnt care less about the contract. the contract offer to me isnt relevant in this case. he’s valuable to the team at what he does, and when he does it, and should retain that value for the near future.
and i dont care how much he makes. its the yankees, not the royals.
Even though I prefer to have two lefty in the bullpen, I believe what I saw from Coke. I think he will be good in 2009. Coke got middle 90s fastball from left side with good command on all three pitches, including fastball, slider and changeup.
If we can believe what we saw from what Joba did in the bullpen for two months in 2007, we should believe Coke will be good as well. It’s easier to be successful relief pitcher than starting pitcher because they can let it go and throw as hard as they can in only 1-2 innings. Hitters around the league have much more troubles to be make proper adjustment because they only face that relief pitcher one time. This is totally different story on Kennedy and Hughes(starting pitchers).
Mel, I understand. Coke’s age is an issue as well. He’s a little “old” (27) to be a true prospect.
I can’t believe I just called 27 old.
Heres a poll for you guys:
Who reaches the big leagues first?
A) Austin Jackson
B) Wilkins De La Rosa
C) Jeremy Bleich
D) Michael Dunn
Maybe the yankee’s should have just picked up Marte’s option:
“the Astros will complete and announce the signing of LaTroy Hawkins today. It’ll be a one-year deal worth around $3.75MM.”
If Hawkins is worth 3.5 maybe Marte is worth 6.
Al:
I’ll take A
Al,
I think Dunn and the Ajax. I don’t think we’ll see WDR until ’10 at the earliest and I don’t see them rushing Bleich either.
i’ll go with option B
for no good reason, really… just a guess.
It seems lefty need more time than righty.
Just to answer my own poll, I pick A. I think Ajax is up bye mid summer or at the latest a Sept. call up.
I’d love to see Scott Boras butt heads with the Sux over Fairy-tek and see the Sux finally say no to money demands and years at the insistence of Boras.
From there come up empty with Texas catchers and wind up having to reluctantly sign I-Rod to a 2-year deal resulting with draft picks to . . . . . the Yankees.
“I don’t think we’ll see WDR until ‘10 at the earliest and I don’t see them rushing Bleich either.”
Yeh I still think 09′ we’ll see him. He’ll start out as a SP and go into the BP and debut around Sept. ala Coke to get his innings.
They still have last year’s Top 50 up. Remember the big flap about Joba & Buccholz being too close to call?
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....p50/y2008/
I’ll go out on a limb and say this year’s #1 will be David Price.
‘wind up having to reluctantly sign I-Rod to a 2-year deal resulting with draft picks to . . . . . the Yankees.”
The Yankees would get ONE pick no matter who signs Pudge, and it’s a sandwich pick. Because he’s a Type B free agent, the signing team does NOT lose their own pick.
Still too early to know about him, but, people may want to get ready to may a space for a shortstop….Addison Maruszak, and Camen Angelini should start to show a lot with his bat this coming year. The power (Jeter type power) should start developing, and his speed and base running skills are first rate. His biggest hill to climb will be his defense. A corner outfield spot may be his best bet if he doesn’t improve in 2009.
If you missed the end of the Portland/Houston game last night, here’s the video.
One of the best endings in years.

aceves in the rotation anyone? he’s got the good stuff. let CC teach him a few things…
Brandon,
WDR has only pitched 130 professiomal innings. It would shock me if he were to be called up this year.
Cameron became a very good friend of CC’s during his time with the Brewers, whose option exercise was an inducement to CC to stay. The Yankees’ “inquiry” and subsequent rumors are intended to show CC “how much we want him and want to make him feel comfortable”. If CC opts not to sign with the Yankees, the inquiry is nothing more than that…if he signs with the Yankees , the Brewers will attempt to unload him very quickly, and the Yankees will be there as an accommodation to CC.
He adds nothing, playingwise, to either team. His defensive skills have declined dramatically during the past two seasons, his strikeout rate is alarmingly high, and he is a career .250 hitter with his numbers less than that during the past two seasons; on the positive side, 25 or so homeruns, a great clubhouse presence, and currently a good friend of CC’s.
“Patterson might be another Phil Coke he is finally healthy and is going to be interesting to follow, I’d still put Angel Reyes above him. Interesting how quick things have a way of showing. 2009 I’d say look out definitely for Dunn and De La Rosa, Patterson could be trade bait or another Phil Coke one thing scouts say is his stuff is too good to ignore and LHP that dial it up to 97-98 aren’t easy to ignore, as for Banuelos he’s 17 yrs. old and has been compared to Scott Kazmir w/ his build a fastball that goes up to 95 mph w/ a nasty hammer”
Brandon: thank you for the report on Patterson. I don’t know him too well, other then the injuries and his fastball having late movement. I like the postive outlook you have on Dunn.
Addendum….if CC opts not to come and the Yankees have acquired Cameron, or do acquire him, it would be a very foolish move if 10M means anything.
Reacher,
30% over the 2nd highest bidder’s not enough incentive for CC?
i love the enthusiasm in here.
all the good ideas, the wants, needs, expectations.
hate to break it to you.
the yankees will not be in the playoffs next season.
so good luck.
and spend that money
my top 15 (only players with no MLB experience)
1) Ajax
McCallister
2) Montero
3) Melancon
4) Betances
5) Brackman
6) Romine
7) DeLaRosa
9) Banuelos
10 Bleich
11 Laird
12 Heredia
13 Vizcaino
14 Garcia
15 Suttle
The Manny scenario has commenced as one might expect. The Dodgers make an offer as an appeasement to their fans who are totally enamored with him knowing (and hoping) the offer will be refused. McCourt has absolutely no intention to part with his money and is simply biding time until the Chavez Ravine real estate can be fully developed, his intention for the getgo. The LA media is incredibly naive as to the intentions of McCourt as to Manny.
What does this mean for this board? Let’s see what the next step is for Boras and his stable. He has a gameplan as to where his people should/will end up.
“WDR has only pitched 130 professiomal innings. It would shock me if he were to be called up this year.”
He’s on this years 40 man so you definitely will see him in 09′.
“If you missed the end of the Portland/Houston game last night, here’s the video.
One of the best endings in years.”
mel he played the worst game of his life as a Blazer last night and then the final 4 mins plus that incredible OT he just turned into a stone cold assasin. Brandon Roy = CLUTCH
Mel,
If I were a betting man, I would say CC will be in Pinstripes. Hopefully, Cameron will not.
I like how the smiley face came up for McCallister
What are the Knicks doing? I was all aboard the DNP for Stephan if you’re not going to use him. But then you’ve got to move or waive him. So Walsh has his meeting with Marbury and they decide they’re not going to move him. But D’antoni says he’s still not going to play him. So Stephan says he’s going to practice with his high school alma mater, to work out and teach the kids about the NBA. But the Knicks say, “No. You have to practice and travel with us.” Huh?
Even Marbury doesn’t deserve such treatment.
i love how the 8 ends up in these numbered lists with a right parenthesis… unless vinny knows that McCallister is just a really cool guy…
GB – despite some horrendous error rates this year Angelini is reportedly a very good defensive player. It may take some time but hopefully he starts putting it together.
I still can’t believe we see WDR this year. That would be an awfully big jump in about two years of pitching. If he makes it and does well at SWB this year I will be happy.
Dunn yes – I think he moves fast now that he is in the pen. Melancon – absolutely.
“i love the enthusiasm in here.

hate to break it to you.

Good trollin’ they let the kids out of school so early these days. Hows the weather up in beantown?
“Good trollin’ they let the kids out of school so early these days. Hows the weather up in beantown?”
They also let the special ed kids out early on the small bus. That one seems more likely
saucy: I prolly should have Banuelos in that spot. Cuz, everytime i see info on him, i get excited. Even tho am not gay : )
“He’s on this years 40 man so you definitely will see him in 09’.”
so is Brackman, but you’re not seeing him.
they arent going to push him. they just didnt want him to potentially become the next Johan-type Rule 5 guy.
just because they want to protect their resource doesnt mean they think he’s ready to produce next season.
Wats the fascination with cameron all of a sudden – wasnt he a FA that we passed one no more than a yr ago? Hes not any better than he was when he was a FA just older
“Wats the fascination with cameron all of a sudden – wasnt he a FA that we passed one no more than a yr ago? Hes not any better than he was when he was a FA just older”
just like this fascination with AJ Burnett… couple seasons ago, noone wouldve touched him because of his injury history.
now, he has a couple of great starts against the Yankees, and a healthy season in a contract year, and he’s now the bees knees, and the future of the organization’s rotation.
doesnt make any sense.
“Even Marbury doesn’t deserve such treatment.”
mel I have no answer for you, they are the NY Knicks. Believe it or not Marbury actually deserves worse, I can’t believe after his stay in NY 4-5 coachs later, player after player being traded to cater to him, Kurt Thomas was dealt because he couldn’t stand him, the Knicks were going to deal Qrich because he was going to beat him up the Knicks had to call his sister from Illinois to talk him out of it because they were afraid he would put Marbury in the hospital (this was the same month Q learned his brother died), Keith Van Horn when he came to the Knicks and was paired w/ Steph was a good tandem then Marbury through anonymous sources went to mgmt. and requested for him to be traded.
Lets go down the list.
Coaches fired, cutting plays, AWOL, intern and the get in the truck, insulting Garden workers, telling the Knicks to bring in his cousins which were a whole bunch of Coney Island delinquents clowns, having players jetison’d out because he didn’t like them. He deserves far worse but hey getting paid 21 mill to not play is considered a punishment meanwhile he’s been punishing Knick fans for more than 4 yrs. and counting.
why won’t owners & Selig, permit Mark Cuban to buy the Cubs ?
so it’s agreed! going forward, everyone reserve #8 in your lists for the cool guy…
just because they want to protect their resource doesnt mean they think he’s ready to produce next season.
I think the idea is you’d probably see him the same way you saw Humberto Sanchez this year, for a cup of coffee. Maybe i’m misreading Brandon’s comments but I don’t think he’s saying WDR will have a rotation spot or anything next year.
“so is Brackman, but you’re not seeing him.”
Brackman was hurt last season.
“they arent going to push him. they just didnt want him to potentially become the next Johan-type Rule 5 guy.”
Exactly.
“just because they want to protect their resource doesnt mean they think he’s ready to produce next season.”
He’s not slipping through waivers and most likely will see the ML in 09′ his stuff is that good.
i don’t like the knicks because they have the same colors as the islanders and worse, the mets. the nets however, have colors much more similar to the rangers, giants, and the yankees. who knows where the jets and devils came from?
“Maybe i’m misreading Brandon’s comments but I don’t think he’s saying WDR will have a rotation spot or anything next year.”
He’ll most likely be in the pen for a sneak peak at the majors.
“just because they want to protect their resource doesnt mean they think he’s ready to produce next season.”
and im not saying you wont definitely see him.
but just because the guy is on the 40 man roster doesnt mean he’s ticketed for pinstripes next year, either.
he’s still got a lot to learn.
Saucy, I can actually respect the Nets, they actually are runned like a basketball organization is suppose to be ran. I don’t respect that poor of a coach they have but everything else I do respect.
“he’s still got a lot to learn.”
Wilkin’s is a quick learner.
I said “is” twice
I’ll be back later.
Brandon,
The guy has pitched 130 innings. He’s been pitching for about a year and a half. He pitched in high A ball at the end of the year which is probably where he’ll start next year. I don’t see the Yankees calling him up at the end of the year. They’ll still be looking to protect his arm being that he’s relatively new to pitching.
“He’s not slipping through waivers and most likely will see the ML in 09’ his stuff is that good.”
noone ever said his stuff isnt good. but the guy just converted, and he’s got a lot to learn.
its fun to be excited about the potential of some of these guys.
but you also need to temper these expectations you’re buildings these guys up to achieve… the law of averages say WDR is more likely to bust out completely before he even sniffs the majors.
“Wilkin’s is a quick learner.”
you’re his mentor now? how would you even know this, or be able to say this?
The guys eligible for 2010 are really exciting. Wilkins De La Rosa, Dellin Betances, Andrew Brackman, Jesus Montero, Austin Jackson, Austin Romine.

“Wilkin’s is a quick learner.â€
and even if he is a quick learner, the history of the development of most prospects says that he is much more likely to never pitch in the major leagues than to get called up less than, what, 3 years into his pitching career?
how can you not like Warrick Dunn
TurnTwo, there is really no point in arguing with Brandon. I gave up last week after he compared Edwar Gonzalez to Matt Holliday.
Why would anyone want this baby on their team? I don’t want to play in the al cause it is too hard. I don’t want to go to the Braves cause they might not win. So stay where you are!! Play for a awful team.
From mlb blogs
Peavy still concerned about Braves
Over the past couple of weeks, Jake Peavy has told friends that he’s intrigued about the possibility of pitching in Atlanta and concerned about the Braves chances to win. Now through his agent, he’s publicly voiced his concern about approving a trade to Atlanta, if it means the Braves have to give up shortstop Yunel Escobar.
“Escobar’s a pretty good player,” Peavy’s agent Barry Axelrod told The San Diego Union-Tribune . “To be honest, Jake and I have said, ‘If that kind of trade gets made, who plays short for them?’”
This is a legitimate question as the Braves would almost certainly have to go outside their organization to find a replacement. But if they include Escobar in this deal for Peavy, they would likely pursue two of their former employees, Rafael Furcal or Edgar Renteria, on the free agent market. In addition, they could make a push toward acquiring Jack Wilson or Julio Lugo via trade.
If Peavy approves a trade to the Braves, Atlanta could become an even more desirable destination for free agents like A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe and Ryan Dempster. Braves GM Frank Wren would like nothing more than to acquire Peavy and also sign one of these free agent starters.
- Mark Bowman
I keep forgetting, was it Phil Coke or Wilkins De La Rosa who pulled Brandon from a raging inferno?
“there is really no point in arguing with Brandon. I gave up last week after he compared Edwar Gonzalez to Matt Holliday.”
yeah, hopefully WDR can develop into the next Eric Threets… now thats a kid with a future.
where did he wind up anyway?
“After the ***** season, ***** demanded a raise to $*****– double his previous salary. However, the Red Sox refused, and ****** responded by letting it be known he wouldn’t play until he got his raise. He’d actually jumped the team several times, including the last game of the ***** season.
The Red Sox finally lost patience with *****, and decided to trade him.”
Horrible, bad dude, walks out on his team, refuses to play, “despicable”—what more can one say about this guy?
Who does this guy think he is? He certainly shouldn’t be wearing Pinstripes, should he? Did he??
“If it turns out that the rumors are true and CC wants to stay in the NL or go to a Cali team, then yes – I don’t want him either.â€
“thats positively nuts.”
No, what would be nuts is bribing someone to come play for a team that they should be itching to play for anyway. I’m all for getting CC…if he wants truly wants to be a Yankee. But I’m totally against this paying him “40% above everyone else” nonsense.
After the ***** season, ***** demanded a raise to $*****—double his previous salary. However, the Red Sox refused, and ****** responded by letting it be known he wouldn’t play until he got his raise. He’d actually jumped the team several times, including the last game of the ***** season.

I think is’s one of those “MAD LIBS” thing I used to play with in the third grade….
“there is really no point in arguing with Brandon. I gave up last week after he compared Edwar Gonzalez to Matt Holliday.â€
I said he has a little of Holliday and Werth. Boy did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed. A little… not that he is..a little of him in his game, like when people say he has some potential and reminds me a bit of him not that he is.
“yeah, hopefully WDR can develop into the next Eric Threets… now thats a kid with a future.”
Touche on him. I was wrong no one is 100 % accurate all the time so what makes you or me any different ? My suggestion to you take 2 Advils or Tylenol because clearly you did wake up on the wrong side of the bed.
Matsui to Mariners?
A report out of Colorado said the Mariners, Yankees and Rockies have discussed a three-way trade that would send outfielder Hideki Matsui to Seattle for a starting pitching prospect, possibly left-hander Ryan Rowland-Smith. The Yankees would then send the pitcher and second baseman Robinson Cano, and another young player, to the Rockies for outfielder Matt Holliday.
A Mariners official downplayed the rumor, according to the Seattle Times, but if Seattle loses left fielder Raul Ibanez to free agency, Matsui would seem to be a potential replacement in left field.
However, the pitcher going to New York could be left-hander Jarrod Washburn and not Rowland-Smith. Both Matsui, who has a full no-trade clause, and Washburn are entering the final years of their current contracts for $13 million and $10.35 million, respectively.
The Yankees were one of the teams that expressed interest in Washburn leading up to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
– Jim Street
Yeh I don’t believe that rumor either.
“I was wrong no one is 100 % accurate all the time so what makes you or me any different ? My suggestion to you take 2 Advils or Tylenol because clearly you did wake up on the wrong side of the bed.”
i’m not saying it to prove you right or wrong… i’m just saying, you are really building this kid up to be the next greatest pitcher in the organization, and i think you need to temper those expectations a little bit.
theres a difference with being realistic, and “waking up on the wrong side of the bed.”
The Yankees are in the process of negotiating a multiyear deal – likely for three years – with Marte, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
http://www.nydailynews.com/spo.....ption.html
If its a reasonable contract I’m all for it but if his demands get too high I’d rather take the picks.
I didn’t say WDR would be the next great thing but he is quite talented.
Maybe its just me but, I’m not sure I would trade Ian Kennedy. I don’t think its fair to label or judge someone good or bad pitcher after just one season. & yea he sounds like someone with a big ego but, the guy is young with no experience, hes coming from Cali to NY…that is a big adjustment for someone especially when they’ve lived in one place all their life.
after listening to Mike Francessa interview Warrick Dunn, it feel like i need 2 advils/tylenol.
cuts people off and interrupts them, every 3 seconds while they’re trying to talk.
“However, the pitcher going to New York could be left-hander Jarrod Washburn and not Rowland-Smith. Both Matsui, who has a full no-trade clause, and Washburn are entering the final years of their current contracts for $13 million and $10.35 million, respectively.”
now that makes much more sense.
bad contract for bad contract, one year for one year.
Warrick Dunn is an amazing person. Listening to him on WFAN has been a pleasure.
“I didn’t say WDR would be the next great thing but he is quite talented.”
and i dont think you’d find anyone who would disagree with you about that.
with ny having a dissappointing season all I can say is…..
….at least we got the Giants ; )
“bad contract for bad contract, one year for one year.”
Matsui has a bad contract? Thats news to me..
When Matsui is healthy 13 million is an absolute bargain.
“When Matsui is healthy 13 million is an absolute bargain.”
and how often has that been the past couple years?
“Warrick Dunn is an amazing person. Listening to him on WFAN has been a pleasure”
Warrick Dunn is amazing. Listening to Francessa interupt him every every other word, is painful.
I’m out of the loop… who is WDR?
Matsui has a bad contract? Thats news to me..
When Matsui is healthy 13 million is an absolute bargain.

If the Yanks don’t get Tex….their best bet is to move Matsui to the Mariners, Damon to DH, Nady LF, and resign Abreu
WDR
I think Wilma Delano Rosevelt….
who cares about Warrick Dunn? Go Ernest Graham! at least during the weeks i’m starting him on my fantasy team…
I don’t think we are looking for any more 1-2 year pitchers after their prime. That’s what Moose and Pettitte are for. And I’ll take Moose and/or Pettitte over Washburn.
“I think Wilma Delano Rosevelt….”
“Warrick Dunn is amazing. Listening to Francessa interupt him every every other word, is painful.”
I know I still remember the day he was interupting Jamal Anderson who at the time was my favorite RB in the whole league.
“And I’ll take Moose and/or Pettitte over Washburn.”
so then what do you do when Moose retires, and Pettitte gets a 2 or 3 year offer in Houston?
“I’m out of the loop… who is WDR?”
Willy Durazo Rodriguez
“and how often has that been the past couple years?”
Obviously he’s been injured the last two years but I think its safe to assume he’ll be healthy next year. If thats the case then 13 mil for him is a bargain.
“If the Yanks don’t get Tex….their best bet is to move Matsui to the Mariners, Damon to DH, Nady LF, and resign Abreu”
Thats a pretty terrible plan unless your goal is to have the worst possible team defense. Damon is better than Nady in LF, Nady is better than Abreu in RF. Why would the Mariners want Matsui? They are a rebuilding team, Matsui would be best on a contender. Despite my optimism for Matsui, I doubt the rest of the league (especially the Mariners) would want to give away prospects for him.
“If the Yanks don’t get Tex….their best bet is to move Matsui to the Mariners, Damon to DH, Nady LF, and resign Abreu”
Why would we give away Matsui, who is a reliable 100 RBI (when healthy) after we’re already losing Giambi and Abreu? They can’t re-sign Abreu for less than 3 yrs so that’s not going to work out. And why would the Mariners take Matsui, who only has one year left on his contract and will probably retire to Japan in 2010?
Lol…I don’t think Wilkens De La Rosa is that obvious
Only if you live on this blog would you know who WDR is…
“so then what do you do when Moose retires, and Pettitte gets a 2 or 3 year offer in Houston?”
Other than the fact that Matsui is more valuable than Washburn, I still think Pettitte and/or Moose are returning. We are supposedly picking up 2 FA pitchers then you have Joba and Wang and you can fill the 5th spot with in-house options: Hughes, Aceves, etc. I don’t know about Washburn. Damon can still field and should be out there and Matsui is a good hitter, esp for DH.
“Obviously he’s been injured the last two years but I think its safe to assume he’ll be healthy next year. If thats the case then 13 mil for him is a bargain.”
how is it safe to assume a player coming off multiple knee surgeries, and is another year older, is going to be any more healthier?
“Other than the fact that Matsui is more valuable than Washburn”
but thats on the basis that he’s healthy, which we really dont know, and cant really assume.
“I still think Pettitte and/or Moose are returning.”
dont disagree.. if i had to make a bet, id say Pettitte would be back, but you need a contingency plan.
“Damon can still field and should be out there and Matsui is a good hitter, esp for DH.”
if they were to make no other moves with the lineup, yeah Damon is the everyday LF and Matsui the DH.
but i dont foresee that being the case.
what they’ll do? idk… i dont think anyone here really knows. but there are certainly other options i would pursue over settling for Damon and Matsui as the everyday LF and DH.
the only thing “safe to assume” about the 09 Yankees is that the trainers will be very busy and that Cashman must plan for a very busy DL season.
“how is it safe to assume a player coming off multiple knee surgeries, and is another year older, is going to be any more healthier?”
Because now that he’s had surgery on both knees its likely that both are somewhat healthy. Also know Girardi knows what Matsui’s limitations are and that he is mostly a DH at this point.
I’d say its very very likely that Matsui opens the season as the full-time DH and Damon as the full-time LF.
True, I don’t know how much value Damon and Matsui have being only 1 year left in their contracts though.
“Because now that he’s had surgery on both knees its likely that both are somewhat healthy”
A slight stretch for someone Matsui’s age. Still he’s going to be on the Yankees. Seattle will NOT trade Rowland-Smith for him.
Matsui’s value to the Yankees will far exceed that of any return they may get for him in trade.
“Lol…I don’t think Wilkens De La Rosa is that obvious
Only if you live on this blog would you know who WDR is…”
All he has to do really is scroll up.
Not my fault he’s lazy.
“Matsui’s value to the Yankees will far exceed that of any return they may get for him in trade.”
unless they dump his salary to clear $$ and an everyday position for a player who is younger, more athletic, healthier, and more productive offensively and defensively.
what am i, chopped liver?
lol.
Washburn’s name popping up again? The Mariners are going to give up Rowland-Smith, their Joba? Just get Ichiro in a salary dump. Dude picked up another Gold Glove. :giggle:
Looks like Marte will be a yankee.

_____________
I think it makes sense to clear up the DH position for Damon/posada to rotate in an out…and sign a low cost option like nelson cruz or juan rivera to platoon in one of the outfield spots
Giradri was most successful (only 1 year I know)…with a young and more flexible roster
Right now, that is not the case
“unless they dump his salary to clear $$ and an everyday position for a player who is younger, more athletic, healthier, and more productive offensively and defensively.”
I don’t know. Only guys the Yankees have that will fetch you that type of player are Hughes and/or Cano. If Cano goes you’re dropping Matsui’s money on an Orlando Hudson or something for 2B.
“unless they dump his salary to clear $$ and an everyday position for a player who is younger, more athletic, healthier, and more productive offensively and defensively.”
Yes and who exactly might that be?
Astros signed Latroy Hawkins to a 1 year $3.5 million plus incentives deal today. The Yankees kiddie corp in the pen is going to be a big savings for years to come if they can pitch like they did at the end of last year.
how about WDLR, like a radio station?
the presidential sounding initials/nicknames don’t seem to be working out so great.
“The Mariners are going to give up Rowland-Smith, their Joba?”
Actually, the M’s “Joba” is Brandon Morrow. Still, they aren’t moving Rowland-Smith for Matsui.
“Yes and who exactly might that be?”
Matt Holliday would certainly fit the bill.
“so then what do you do when Moose retires, and Pettitte gets a 2 or 3 year offer in Houston?”
TurnTwo get your head out of your ass. For some of you guys that post here all the time, you don’t know crap about the team.
Pettitte has stated repeatedly that he will pitch for the Yankees or retire. This point isn’t up for debate.
At least PRETEND you know something about the team before you go spouting off at the mouth. You look foolish and waste everyone’s time.
““Yes and who exactly might that be?
Matt Holliday would certainly fit the bill.”
just to name one player… but none of us can really predict who is available just yet.
but you can bet that if Matsui does go, Cashman’s got another move up his sleeve to replace him.
“Because now that he’s had surgery on both knees its likely that both are somewhat healthy”
Then we have Patrick, another idiot who lost his way.
So let me get this straight…. Matsui is mid 30s. He’s had a serious injury every year for the last 3 years. He has been constantly breaking down. Wrist, hamstring, both knees.
Yet somehow, miraculously, the fact that he’s had surgery on both his knees somehow in your mind makes him healthy? Less likely to break down? Seriously, if you don’t have anything relevant to say, don’t say anything
You guys really need to find something else to do or know what you’re talking about. One of the two.
but you can bet that if Matsui does go, Cashman’s got another move up his sleeve to replace him.
______________
Matsui is the DH…you have a LF and a C that can’t throw…there are two candidates for replacement right away
“TurnTwo get your head out of your ass. For some of you guys that post here all the time, you don’t know crap about the team.”
jesus, wtf is wrong with you?
why cant someone have a little fun, and play devil’s advocate around here, rather than just head nod to whatever other drivel is posted every minute of every hour of every day of every week all year?
get a grip on life, dude. you take things way too seriously.
TurnTwo give it up. You waste everyone’s time with your nonsense. Pettitte isn’t signing with Houston. Its a known fact.
So why say it? Need something to pass the time? It just makes no sense.
Will Rogers never met Miggs.
Fredo… you’re someone who at least has a clue.
Its no fun debating topics about the team with people that are ignorant. Sorry it just annoys me.
“you can bet that if Matsui does go, Cashman’s got another move up his sleeve to replace him”
the only thing cashman has up his sleeve is a really skinny arm. he’ll be gone by next labor day. i can’t remember when the yankees have been so boring.
“TurnTwo give it up. You waste everyone’s time with your nonsense. Pettitte isn’t signing with Houston. Its a known fact.
So why say it? Need something to pass the time? It just makes no sense.”
did i ever say Pettitte is signing with Houston?
no.
maybe i could have just repeated “one of Pettitte or Moose is definitely coming back” for the 4,008,890,765,677th time, but no, that certainly wouldnt be a waste of time or space.
my point was that perhaps Cashman needs to have a contingency plan if Plan A and Plan B, and then Plan C dont come to fruition.
its ok to think outside the box, miggs. dont be afraid… it doesnt make you any less cool on the board here.
Miggs did you lose a ton of money on the street yesterday?
I’ve seen people on this blog who don’t have a clue but TurnTwo and Patrick don’t fall into that category.
“Matt Holliday would certainly fit the bill.”
Not necessarily. First of all, we would probably have to give up someone good to get him. Second, he has great numbers in Rockiesland, but worse numbers elsewhere. Sounds like he should stay in CO ’cause there’s no proof he’ll be any good in the AL.
i’d personally love it if we could sign CC, and keep both Moose and Pettitte over signing Lowe/AJ…
but i’m not getting my hopes up.
Ray I pulled most of my money out a long time ago…
Maybe I’m just ready for the offseason to get started. It just seems the longer there is no Yankees news, the more time people have to come up with wacky unrealistic trades and roster scenarios.
Sorry for the fit of rage
“You guys really need to find something else to do or know what you’re talking about. One of the two.”
People have been posting *nonsense* on this blog since before the season ended. You just noticed this?
“Sounds like he should stay in CO ‘cause there’s no proof he’ll be any good in the AL.”
except for the fact he’s an All Star OF? yeah, true.
“except for the fact he’s an All Star OF? yeah, true.”
An All Star OF playing in the NL. Still no proof that translates to the AL.
i’d be more worried about a pitcher coming from the NL to the AL than a position player.
his home numbers are way better than away, but in Colorado, they should be. his away #’s in ’08 were good…
An All Star OF playing in the NL. Still no proof that translates to the AL.
___________
That’s a silly statement….I’ve heard of the pitching argument (AL vs. NL)…but not the hitting argument (AL vs. NL)..of course there is a transition period to be taken into account
But why would it make a difference with league?
Perhaps Holliday’s .336ba and .916OPS in 253 interleague play at bats translates to the AL?
“i’d be more worried about a pitcher coming from the NL to the AL than a position player. ”
I would be too. I also don’t like that his away stats aren’t as good as his home stats. The bottom line is that I’m not willing to part with Cano for a guy who is unproven in the much tougher AL.
“But why would it make a difference with league?”
He plays in Coors Field. That requires no explanation.
“Perhaps Holliday’s .336ba and .916OPS in 253 interleague play at bats translates to the AL?”
What’s the breakdown of those numbers by stadium (i.e. Coors versus AL park)?
“Not necessarily. First of all, we would probably have to give up someone good to get him. Second, he has great numbers in Rockiesland, but worse numbers elsewhere. Sounds like he should stay in CO ‘cause there’s no proof he’ll be any good in the AL”
same can be said for Albert Pujols.
I would be too. I also don’t like that his away stats aren’t as good as his home stats. The bottom line is that I’m not willing to part with Cano for a guy who is unproven in the much tougher AL.
__________
How about we wait for him to be traded…see how he performs in another city outside of CO, and then sign him in 2010…plus we won’t have to give up Cano
I dont necessarily think the whole team has to be fixed in one offseason…the best teams are usually built over the course of a few years
“But why would it make a difference with league?â€
He plays in Coors Field. That requires no explanation.
__________
That’s a stadium…not a league…there’s no indication he couldn’t hit in the AL….the AL has more hitter friendly parks anyway (Fenway, Jacobs Field, Camden, Comiskey, etc)
“same can be said for Albert Pujols.”
That’s a stretch, vinny. AP is an absolutely stud. You’d be hard pressed to make the case that he wouldn’t be a monster in any league he plays in. Well, maybe not the NHL.
“Then we have Patrick, another idiot who lost his way. ”
Ouch.
Usually people that get surgery on a certain area don’t have recurring injuries in that same spot… because surgery fixes the problems in that area. For example, how often do guys get tommy john surgery on the same elbow? It happens but not very often.
Matsui might be diminished physically because of the surgery on his knees but I doubt he will reinjure them. If I’m recalling correctly, after the 2007 season he had surgery one one knee then had the same knee scoped right before spring training. Thats a pretty common practice to clean up the knee after surgery but the knee he had repaired didn’t give him trouble for the rest of the season.
Now that he’s had both knees worked on I think its somewhat likely that he will be okay next season. Over his career he’s been a pretty durable player, don’t you all remember his consecutive game streak?
“That’s a stadium…not a league…”
Coors Field is not a league? Wow, thanks for clearing that up for me.
Matsui will figure out a way to stay healthy for the whole season.
He’s a slow-but-steady learner.
If your a Knicks fan sit down if your standing up I nearly threw up at this.
“Bob Fitzgerald, the Warriors radio and TV guy, was just on the radio in the Bay Area talking a possible rumored 3-way with the Warriors getting Gerald Wallace, Knicks getting Harrington and the Bobcats winding up w/ Lee and Curry.”
Holliday’s career splits do leave much to be desired:
Home: .357BA .423OBP .645SLG 1.068OPS
Away: .280BA .348OBP .455SLG .803OPS
Those are pretty stark. Granted he has done better in recent years.
Also Yankee stadium is tough on RH batters.
Coors Field is not a league? Wow, thanks for clearing that up for me.
____________
Well when you make such a ridonculous statement that it would make a difference for a hitter to go from the NL to the AL…I have to wonder
How did it work out for Tex, Sheffield, Soriano, Thome, etc…
Some say Coors Field is in a league of its own.
Is it too late to get Johan Santana?:)
And on that note I got to drive home. Later people.
“Well when you make such a ridonculous statement that it would make a difference for a hitter to go from the NL to the AL…I have to wonder”
You clearly missed the point of my answer. My response to that was that he was a guy who hit in Coors Field, which is notorious for being one of the most (if not the most) hitter friendly parks in the Majors. Just because he’s a masher there doesn’t mean he’d be one in Yankee Stadium. It’s also a known fact that his away numbers pale in comparison to his home numbers. Perhaps I should have mentioned Coors earlier in the discussion. I’ll make note of that for future reference.
Speaking of Coors-I need a beer
Wow, what an angry and venomous board today! Is it still election day? Or is it just because Pete hasn’t posted a new entry since early morning?
beeeeeer’lllllll (drool) [/homer]
If Latroy Hawkins just got 3.5 million for one year, Marte at 6 mill a year is a bargain out there.
Dear Michael Kay,
ENOUGH with Jake Peavy! He will not be a NY Yankee
KThxBai
I would be surprised if Cashman doesn’t have his Free Agency Gameplan…..Option A, Option B etc. If he doesn’t and is simply winging it, he shouldn’t be the GM.
Tom’s post is a good one, and as he says, you can’t ignor Yankee LF when looking at RH batters.
However, Holiday is still a fine player. It is typical for players to hit better at home, by 50-100 OPS pts, regardless of their stadium. So Holiday’s numbers are somewhat inflated, but I would consider Holidays offense on the same level as a young/healthy Matsui (which is damn good).
That said, my issue is teams ALWAYS sell high during the winter, because there is always one team desparate enough to overpay. This is why Cashman does his trading mid-season, when salary dumping and fear of losing players as FAs makes good deals possible.
If we are going to overpay for CC and/or Tex, AJ, Lowe, etc, we will need to get good value on our trades. For all the talk of money coming off the books, our payroll may still be in the $200m area. If Holiday is not traded, he will be cheaper in July.

“Lowe wants to pitch for BOS. I don’t want anyone who doesn’t really want to be here.â€
Sabathia doesn’t want to be here either. Anyone have a problem with him?
————————————————————
i have a big problem with any 28 or 29 yr old pitcher who might wan’t 7 yrs.
the yankees have to get better with contracts and dictate their terms.
5 yrs tops or it will be a very bad contract.
almost 100 percent of those type of contracts do not work.
why do teams keep making the same mistakes?
we do not need sabathia to win.arod is another terrible contract.
sign dempster, hope mussina comes back, sabathia for 4 or 5 yrs with more money yearly.
as long as the rotation is good enough.
something has to give.if he want’s 6 or 7 years the yankees should pay him less yearly.4 yrs/26 million per yr,5 yrs/25 million,6 yrs/24 million,7 yrs/23 million,along those lines.
give these players something to think about instead of saying 7 yrs or i walk.
let him walk like the red sox and any other smart team would do.
let’s see what happens when no one is calling like when peavey heard no one was banging down his door all of a sudden he would accept a trade to the yankees.
all i am saying is we need a good pitching staff and already have wang, joba.if moose comes back we are in ok shape but need 2 solid starters.
sabathia would be great but not for 6 or 7 yrs.
i would be happy with dempster and a trade for a pitcher.
trade cano or a package for a pitcher.
i wouldn,t sign tex either.
try to get the kid from the rangers.he is going to take off.
people get to caught up in namesw.
the yankees will be making a devastating mistake if they go 30-40 percent higher than any other team for sabathia.
they will soon have a payroll where they won,t be able to sign a batboy.
they should also sign joba now for 6 yrs 30-36 million.
they wait to long to lock players up.
if wang has a great year he will cost 20 million a year instead of 10-13 million now.
this is the problem.
they sign free agents when they cost the maximum and don,t lock up their good players early enough.
I actually agree with Kay
Offer the Padres Hughes, Kennedy, and Jackson and make them go to Peavy to ask him to waive his NTC.
Don’t just give up
I’d give up Hughes for Holliday in a nanosecond, I don’t think the Rockies would do it though.
I prefer him to Teixeria though we do need a real 1st baseman.

“If you can’t see the value of having a strong farm system then I have nothing for ya..â€
people here seem to forget that the idea is to win championships.
it’s nice to get picks to build the farm if Marte goes elswehere, but every effort should be made to retain him, because he is a weapon for a bullpen on a championship winning team.
————————————————————
until he helps any team win a world series nobody knows if he can help us to do it.
the yankees also have to have a budget like any other corporation.
teams win with 30,50,100,150 million dollar payrolls.
the yankees farm system is absolutely loaded with pitchers and they are getting better with position players.
they are headed in the right direction with their farm system and will be producing pitchers like crazy.
ajax, montero and others also look good.
marte is not needed and they need to let him walk and take the picks only because they already have a real good bullpen, maybe great, deep and cheap with many more coming.
if they were having bullpen problems and nobody in the minore then i can see them keeping marte.
if they sign him they might have a hard time getting him innings and if he struggles he will never pitch.
don’t just focus on coke, they have many more.
pete listed a few promising pitchers.
Manuel Banuelos is one.this kid looks darn good.
OYF, I agree. Holliday would still be a very good, if not, great hitter away from Coors.
As he’s matures as a hitter he’s been very good on the road: .892OPS in ’08; .860 in ’07; .819 in’06.
Edwar Gonzalez ???????????? who is he??
Newport -
I usually stay out of the trade rumor posts. I don’t know enough about all the players involved and I don’t like to make misinformed statements.
However -
If the Yankees wouldn’t do Hughes, Kennedy and whoever the heck else plus a contract extension for Johan Santana, a pitcher who was proven in the AL, why in the world would they make that offer for Jake Peavy, who has already stated he prefers to stay in the NL, and he is unproven in the AL?
It is not a good deal. Not at all. I am glad the Yankees are, at least as far as we all know, staying out of it. If they do make a deal for Peavy, it can’t be for every single top prospect (and, yes, I know that Kennedy is on most people’s s-list) they have plus a contract extension, plus a bonus for waiving his NTC. It’s just nuts.
i’d much rather offer that hughes+ package for cain, billingsly, morrow etc.
I wonder why no one is talking about Brad Penny. Option not picked up by Dodgers (it was only 9 million). The guy won 16 games in back-to-back years 2006-200d and started the 2007 all star game. His stuff is filthy.
I understand he had arm problems most of the year and pitched badly when he wasn’t hurt but still. Give the guy a shot. Unless he totally blew out his arm he’s worth the risk. He could probably be had for 5-7 million. If he’s healthy that’s the steal of the offseason. And we’d only need him to be our 4th starter at best.
CC
Wang
Joba
Pettitte
Penny
That’s a damn good starting 5 right there, and a lotless costly than if Burnett or Lowe was in the mix. Take that savings and sign Tex.
miggs:
people would rather talk about peavy. May he please be traded ASAP
the idea (penny) may not be a bad one.
“Offer the Padres Hughes, Kennedy, and Jackson and make them go to Peavy to ask him to waive his NTC.”
So you want to give up the farm for a guy who
1)has pitched his entire career in the weak NL
2)doesn’t want to be a Yankee and has said so on a few occasions
3)Is older than Hughes, Kennedy and Jackson.
Thank God you people aren’t real GMs.
Laura- I echo your comments.

“you can bet that if Matsui does go, Cashman’s got another move up his sleeve to replace himâ€
the only thing cashman has up his sleeve is a really skinny arm. he’ll be gone by next labor day. i can’t remember when the yankees have been so boring.
————————————————————
i wouldn’t bet on it.
the yankees are loaded with some real good pitchers in the minors, their bullpen is great, cheap, young.
it will boil down to this offseason and if he can get creative enough to fill the teams needs without giving up the good prospects.
i would keep hughes, montero, ajax, brackman and some other elite prospects like heredia, delarosa, banuelos.
the yankees are close to being great and setting themselves up to compete for many years.they just have to pull off a small miracle to fix the pitching staff,cf,first base without giving some key prospects up.wich ones nobody knows yet but time will tell.
it is difficult to know wich players are keepers.
montero could be our next catcher or first baseman so the yankees need to figure out wich and act accordingly unless he can bring us a good young catcher or first baseman in return via trade.
if you get a good young catcher or fb in return you have to do it i think because you are solving a positional need with a young player for an unknown prospect.that is the only way i would trade a player like montero, ajax, etc, not for an aging veteran who makes big money and want’s a long term contract.
the yankees have many prospects that can be used in a trader.
i would trade cano for a good young pitcher and hughes for a centerfielder/first baseman because you replace hughes with what cano brings back but only for a good young player.
i also would not trade for peavey.it would cost hughes, ajax, montero and maybe more.way to much to give up.
i also don’t like the idea of signing cc and tex to more than 5 yrs.
we need them both and it would only cost money but 6 or 7 years especially for sabathia is asking for trouble.
they should try and get the fb from texas or someone like him who is about to take off.maybe we can get him without giving up too much.
if cano, kennedy, ajax and another 1 or two can get me the fb from texas and centerfielder or both from another team i would do i in a second because we fix fb and cf and keep most of our good prospects.
cash is going to have a tough time fixing the mess but he can do it.
if money is no concern then the safest and easiest thing to do is sign tex, sabathia, dempster and maybe trade some prospects lower than hughes, montero, brackman to get a centerfielder.
this will allow us to build a good team to compete now without trading away our farm system.
