“you can bet that if Matsui does go, Cashman’s got another move up his sleeve to replace him”

the only thing cashman has up his sleeve is a really skinny arm. he’ll be gone by next labor day. i can’t remember when the yankees have been so boring.

------------------------------------------------------------

i wouldn't bet on it.

the yankees are loaded with some real good pitchers in the minors, their bullpen is great, cheap, young.

it will boil down to this offseason and if he can get creative enough to fill the teams needs without giving up the good prospects.

i would keep hughes, montero, ajax, brackman and some other elite prospects like heredia, delarosa, banuelos.

the yankees are close to being great and setting themselves up to compete for many years.they just have to pull off a small miracle to fix the pitching staff,cf,first base without giving some key prospects up.wich ones nobody knows yet but time will tell.

it is difficult to know wich players are keepers.

montero could be our next catcher or first baseman so the yankees need to figure out wich and act accordingly unless he can bring us a good young catcher or first baseman in return via trade.

if you get a good young catcher or fb in return you have to do it i think because you are solving a positional need with a young player for an unknown prospect.that is the only way i would trade a player like montero, ajax, etc, not for an aging veteran who makes big money and want's a long term contract.

the yankees have many prospects that can be used in a trader.

i would trade cano for a good young pitcher and hughes for a centerfielder/first baseman because you replace hughes with what cano brings back but only for a good young player.

i also would not trade for peavey.it would cost hughes, ajax, montero and maybe more.way to much to give up.

i also don't like the idea of signing cc and tex to more than 5 yrs.

we need them both and it would only cost money but 6 or 7 years especially for sabathia is asking for trouble.

they should try and get the fb from texas or someone like him who is about to take off.maybe we can get him without giving up too much.

if cano, kennedy, ajax and another 1 or two can get me the fb from texas and centerfielder or both from another team i would do i in a second because we fix fb and cf and keep most of our good prospects.

cash is going to have a tough time fixing the mess but he can do it.

if money is no concern then the safest and easiest thing to do is sign tex, sabathia, dempster and maybe trade some prospects lower than hughes, montero, brackman to get a centerfielder.

this will allow us to build a good team to compete now without trading away our farm system.

"Offer the Padres Hughes, Kennedy, and Jackson and make them go to Peavy to ask him to waive his NTC."

So you want to give up the farm for a guy who
1)has pitched his entire career in the weak NL
2)doesn't want to be a Yankee and has said so on a few occasions
3)Is older than Hughes, Kennedy and Jackson.

Thank God you people aren't real GMs.

I wonder why no one is talking about Brad Penny. Option not picked up by Dodgers (it was only 9 million). The guy won 16 games in back-to-back years 2006-200d and started the 2007 all star game. His stuff is filthy.

I understand he had arm problems most of the year and pitched badly when he wasn't hurt but still. Give the guy a shot. Unless he totally blew out his arm he's worth the risk. He could probably be had for 5-7 million. If he's healthy that's the steal of the offseason. And we'd only need him to be our 4th starter at best.

CC
Wang
Joba
Pettitte
Penny

That's a damn good starting 5 right there, and a lotless costly than if Burnett or Lowe was in the mix. Take that savings and sign Tex.

Newport -

I usually stay out of the trade rumor posts. I don't know enough about all the players involved and I don't like to make misinformed statements.

However -

If the Yankees wouldn't do Hughes, Kennedy and whoever the heck else plus a contract extension for Johan Santana, a pitcher who was proven in the AL, why in the world would they make that offer for Jake Peavy, who has already stated he prefers to stay in the NL, and he is unproven in the AL?

It is not a good deal. Not at all. I am glad the Yankees are, at least as far as we all know, staying out of it. If they do make a deal for Peavy, it can't be for every single top prospect (and, yes, I know that Kennedy is on most people's s-list) they have plus a contract extension, plus a bonus for waiving his NTC. It's just nuts.

OYF, I agree. Holliday would still be a very good, if not, great hitter away from Coors.

As he's matures as a hitter he's been very good on the road: .892OPS in '08; .860 in '07; .819 in'06.

“If you can’t see the value of having a strong farm system then I have nothing for ya..”

people here seem to forget that the idea is to win championships.

it’s nice to get picks to build the farm if Marte goes elswehere, but every effort should be made to retain him, because he is a weapon for a bullpen on a championship winning team.

------------------------------------------------------------

until he helps any team win a world series nobody knows if he can help us to do it.

the yankees also have to have a budget like any other corporation.

teams win with 30,50,100,150 million dollar payrolls.

the yankees farm system is absolutely loaded with pitchers and they are getting better with position players.

they are headed in the right direction with their farm system and will be producing pitchers like crazy.

ajax, montero and others also look good.

marte is not needed and they need to let him walk and take the picks only because they already have a real good bullpen, maybe great, deep and cheap with many more coming.

if they were having bullpen problems and nobody in the minore then i can see them keeping marte.

if they sign him they might have a hard time getting him innings and if he struggles he will never pitch.

don't just focus on coke, they have many more.

pete listed a few promising pitchers.

Manuel Banuelos is one.this kid looks darn good.
