So apparently the Dodgers offered Manny 2 years with an option. First year $15M, 2nd year $22.5M, third year at $22.5M with team option to buy it out at $7.5M.

So, what would this mean? A guaranteed $22.5M over 2 years for Manny if he doesn't feel like playing at the end of 2010. Or $60M if he plays like he should, or if he puts the Dodgers over a barrell like he did the that Red Sox but succeeds in conning them into picking up that final option year.

So Manny would do harm to his own team like he did to Boston, all for what amounts to the choice of either $5M more over the two option years he was whining about (except its guaranteed) or a one-year extension at the same annual amount?

If he takes that, why on earth would anyone (LA, NY, SF, anyone) want that kind of guy on their team?

He & Boras will probably ask 1 or 2 more years, with the average being closer to $25M. I wonder how they feel about the idea of a team option year. If they like it, I'd take that as Manny intending to do the same as he did in Boston. If he didn't think of it that way, he'd want everything guaranteed.

And any GM who offers him that would be insane. With all the money coming off the NY books this year, it would be far better spent on the top 2 FA's out there (CC/Tiexiera) and not this bung hole. All around, the team would be better for longer with CC and a solid offensive & defensive 1B.

Its been a very long time since the team's had that at 1B. That's needed more than a moody batter with nothing more to offer than vapid buffoonery in the field and on the bench. Money aside, even if he hits .400 why would anyone want a 37+ year old guy like THAT on their team? Especially when another guy (Tex) who's possibly the best all around player at his own position (a position we've also enormously lacking at for several years) is in his prime and available for less?

If a real 1B like Tex could be gotten, then its not too too bad an idea to chase Lowe as the secondary pitching acquisition this off season. He's more reliable than Burnett in terms of durability, but he throws a lot of ground balls so leather in the infield will be important.

Burnett can be better, yes, in fact his stuff can be filthy. As long as he's healthy. But if someone else grabs him first then we have to have other options. Neither would be a slouch though.

Hopefully Girardi gave Cano a good enough kick in the wazoo at the end of this year that he'll hustle in the field w/o warning. That would help too.

You can see Gardner as a starter but not Nady?

Gardner is the new Melky. At least as far as Francessa needing someone to complain about goes...

If we go with Damon/Gardner/Nady as the starting outfield, who is the 4th?

Damon/Gardner/Nady

I remain in favor of Gardner in CF. No decent CF'ers available (unless Ichiro were moved)

however, Damon/Gardner/Nady?? It is the sum of the parts, which bothers me. Maybe i just don't look at Nady as a starter.

I hope NYY signs another bat (yes - i love Blalock). And/or be prepared for multitudes of 2-1,3-2, games.

pat,

I'm not questioning his sources and info.

I'm questioning his player evaluation, re: Little G.

People say he knows nothing about anything, so I'm wondering how much baseball he knows. Like the Arroyo thing, thinking we still have Tabata.

Sterling seems to be one of his contacts so take what he says using that for reference.

Oh yeah, the Giants. What's scary (In a good way) about the Giants, is that they are winning games, while some elements of their game aren't sharp. When they get everything to click they will be even better...scary.
