The Babe on the move

Peter Abraham
November
12

This video is interesting. It’s raw footage from our friends at WCBS880.com showing the Yankees preparing to move the Babe Ruth monument. It includes footage of media relations director Jason Zillo.

Thanks to Roxanne from WCBS for sending this along.

Still hard to believe Pete, but thanks for keeping us updated on the day to day activity.

  2. mel

    Cool.

    “How was your day, daddy?”

“It was good. I got to help the Babe move to his new house!”

That last question was pretty funny, “Do you have anything else to add, that I haven’t asked you about?”

  3. Mike

It might be my imagination but the embedded video seriously screwed up the page in Firefox.

  4. Gary

    The economy rears it’s head up north . . . . .

    mel,
Why are you always one of the top 4 to post on a new thread? Does your finger hurt from pressing refresh constantly?

  6. Mr. Exceptional

Four guys to put shrink wrap around it…that’s union labor at it’s finest.

  7. S.o.S.27

Next time i move. Im making sure i hire those guys. My furniture always takes a beating and thats not including the dents and scratches that afterwords appear.

I just hope they dont forget to bring the Ghosts accross the street.

  8. mel

    SoS,

LOL! No, they don’t hurt. I rotate the digits. I use all 10 fingers!

“I just hope they dont forget to bring the Ghosts accross the street.”

i think they were the first to move… cause they didn’t seem to be around the Old stadium this year ;)

  10. T15D23

    Sad. Very sad.

  11. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

Wow…incredible. I can’t wait to see the new park at the home opener in 2009. This place should rock!

  12. Mark in Tampa

I hope they cleaned off Roger Clemens’ head sweat that he used to rub into the Babe.

  13. Tom

    Talk about being an Iconoclast:

“His participation in an all-star tour of Japan in 1934 sparked that country’s interest in professional baseball; a decade later, Japanese soldiers seeking the ultimate insult for American troops would sometimes shout, “To hell with Babe Ruth!”

The other thing I love is how clean all they workers are. Sweatshirts brand new, hard hats brand new. Must have known the cameras would be there. I am in the construction business and when ever the cameras are around the new shirts and hard hats come out.

  15. paulie

Zillo looked like he’d rather be on a beach somewhere than at the moving of Babe’s monument.

  16. S.o.S.27

I wonder if they will move home plate to the New Stadium? With all the legends crossing home from bombs, hits, steals and other ways. I think its a must to keep the soon to be legends crossing the same plate.

  17. Al from BK( Free agency on Friday. Jets-Pats tomorrow!)

Thats nice that all the monuments are coming across the street. The new place looks great for any one who wants to see pics check out Greg’s blog sliding into home.

  18. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    SOS,

They did that a few days ago.

  19. Frontier

    IMO

Torre should have won the NL manager of the year. That 2nd half surge to overtake Arizona after they had just gotten swept in Philly and Washington and were 6 games under .500 was one of the best managing jobs I’ve ever seen.

He rallied that team to victory and fight like he did here for 12 years, though what he did in LA trumps his best managing jobs here these past few years.

What did Pinella do? Win a mediocre division with a powerhouse team? That Cubs team had 7 all-stars or something this year, they were expected to win the division. Nobody thought Torre’s Dodgers would though.

  20. Mark Alan

Set him free! Let the Babe out of the plywood box!

THEN AGAIN, maybe the Bambino’s pent up spiritual energy will be released in the new venue next year.

(I don’t really like the mythological/symbolic aspect of baseball. Or even the downright superstitious/silly. Honest.)

  21. Patrick

Torre should win MOTY? If he did he should immediately give it to Manny Ramirez because Manny is the only reason the Dodgers made the playoffs.

  22. Tom

4 out of the 6 teams in the Nl Central won more games than Torre’s Dodgers did.

  23. S.o.S.27

Thanks Prince. Thats very good news. Now all they need to do is keep wearing out that plate and its all good.

  24. S.o.S.27

    Patrick,
You took the words right out of my mouth. Better yet. Just have the league hand it to him directly and assume hes a player/manager.

This post is in reference to marte signing – i have been in classes all day. Of course, the marte deal made sense – they gave up tabata who was supposedly untouchable to get him and it wasnt a couple months rental. However, was three yrs really necessary? I guess it was but to me that seems like a long time for a lefty reliever who is past his prime already at the age of 33. Seems like two yrs and 12 million probably would have done the trick with a club option for a third yr. That would be adding 6 mil to the option and adding a new option. I hate signing relievers to long term deals and granted, this is only three yrs but that seems like a lot- marte is not the best reliever in the game and relievers in general are soo volatile. Im happy that marte is back though and it certainly solidifies the pen although i would like cash to get someone that can replace the eighth inning parade of relievers that we have had. If joba is going to start, who is the bridge to Mo? Is it marte? I wouldnt mind signing a guy like fuentes. I was begging for him last yr and he looks even better now. I bet a a multiyr deal with a lot of money involved will get him to be a setup man rather than a closer. And if a reliever can succeed in colorado, I think they can be successful anywhere. I also wanted him last yr.

I thought the idea behind the Marte trade was that the Yankees traded a prospect who was seriously struggling on and off the field for 2 guys that they needed to make a push for the playoffs. Matsui and Damon were hurt and Joba was moving out of the pen. If they didn’t make the playoffs, they’d be able to basically get 4 picks in the 1st 2 rounds out of it by letting Marte go and letting Abreu go and replacing him with Nady. That’s 4 chances to find a guy as good as Tabata.

If they wanted to keep Marte they should have picked up the option. They could have seen how he would perform in NY for a full season before they decided to commit to a long term deal. It doesn’t make any sense to me.

  27. Other Pete

I wonder if the movers noticed that our Stein-kees picked the date of his death to break ground on the replacement for his House. Utter sacrilege.
