This is beginning to look a lot like the 2004 off season, where the Yankees focused on pitching (Randy Johnson) and not offense (Carlos Beltran). Look how that turned out. Free agent shopping is about spending your money for the "sure thing". I believe that Texiera is more of a sure thing than Sabathia. If they can't or do not want to get both then they should sign Tex over CC.

Newsflash, the Yanks will be bringing in CC, Burnett, Teixiera, and possibly Cameron. They shaved $80 million off of payroll for next year, have only about $100 million committed for 2010, and will be printing money in the basement of the new stadium. Expect pyroll to reach the $250 million range.

The Swisher move does two things. One it serves as a contingency in the case that Boras holds to his guns on Teixiera at anything more than 6 at $18. Two, it gives them the flexibility to let Abreu go, possibly move Damon or Matsui or both, and bring in Cameron via trade if the Brewers want to dump his contract once CC leaves Milwaukee.

Anyone who thinks the Yanks wont hit the $200 million payroll mark is deluded. I'm wagering close to $250, especially with the new Legends HM enterprise, which should increase their concessions revenue from lat years $70 million fee for Centerplate to something in the neighborhood of $140-150 million. Then add in their cut of MLB Network and MLBAM profits. That's close to another $70-80 million.

The bottom line is that with all the revenue sharing going on and MLB's digital and television arms, no team should be able to claim they can't afford a payroll of less than $60 million.

If Brian Cashman lets Tex go to another team, then he needs to be fired. For the last 5 years there have been players who would fill obvious needs and Cashman takes the cheap way out. He signs sheffield instead of guerrero, we need a centerfielder when bernie was washed up but he doesn't sign beltran when he was begging to come to the yankees. He doesn't make the move for santana instead re-signs pettitte.
Then he signs and trades a bunch of washed up relief pitchers and broken down starters. The yankees need pitching (sabathia, burnett) a first baseman (tex), and a centerfielder (cameron). This is not rocket science and money is no option. GO GET THEM!

"People forgot what scott brosius was before he came to the yankees."

Scott Brosius had 2 good years before coming to the Yankees and one good year after. I love that a few hits at the right time make people think he was some kind of super stud.

Hysterical some posts. People forgot what scott brosius was before he came to the yankees. Swisher had bad year, power from both sidesn can play of or 1b, plays all out, he walks and will never hit for average and in yankees stadium will have good power.he is high character guy and not making ton year. He's 27 so they got young player entering his prime years. And what did they lose exactly? Swisher can also play lf if need be abreu in rf and still land tex if they want, but don't need him. They also can choose their price on bobby as well.

For the people worrying about CF.

Do we know what Gardner will do next year, or if Melky will have a revival? No one has a clue. So why not wait and see what happens. If either comes up in the optomistic forecast, we have ignition. In order to have great pitching you need good fielding. As far as the Swisher deal, it was simply a salary dump.
The Yankees have a cash flow advantage and should do more deals of this type. At worst they now have another trade chip.

the 2007 yankees run production is an unfair measuring stick.the whole world knows this.

everybody thinks that we have to equall that years production to be successful.this is not true.

like pete said it is just as importand to prevent runs.

it is about winning games.

i see the yankees upgrading the pitching in a big way.the bullpen is absolutely stacked.

we have a huge advantage over the red sox there.

i think if cash has an oportunity to package nady, kennedy and prospects to land a good first baseman or centerfielder he does it.

if we get a fb swisher goes to right field.

if we could just upgrade in cf.i don't think the yankees can afford a 300 obp cf.

“Boston also does not have the payroll available,”

Pete… do a little homework first.

Schill off the books.
Manny, off the books.
Timlin, off the books.
Varitek, off the books.

The Red Sox had lowered payroll going into the 2008 season, and they have made it EVEN lower… in the $100M-$105M dollar range.

Mike Lowell is movable. The 3rd basemen market is weak this offseason. Philly would take him… they wanted to sign him last season.

In the end… Money talks. Or is CC really not going to sign with the Yankees? Talk was he wants to stay on the West Coast and in the NL.

------------------------------------------------------------

the red sox have done a nice job with their payroll like you said but they are not going to sign tex for 6-10yrs/20-25 million a year when they have an absolute stud fb prospect.they need a catcher, bullpen help and are probably somewhat concerned with shortstop.

they might also wan't to add a pitcher and have to keep an eye on centerfield.

ortiz is also aging very quickly.
