At my command, unleash money

gladiator-movie-poster-500w.jpgFree agency is upon us. Brian Cashman said he would be sleeping. But what if he decided to watch the Jets-Patriots game and before he went to bed, called CC Sabathia and made him an offer?

Nah. That’ll happen in 12 hours or so.

Forgot to mention a few things yesterday: Hank Steinbrenner chased down an AP reporter in Tampa and issued a few thoughts. A big Manny fan a few weeks ago, Little Stein admits the Yankees aren’t going to make him an offer. “Not yet. It might be advantageous to do at some point,” he said.

Mariano Rivera finished fifth and Mike Mussina sixth in the Cy Young voting. I had a vote for that award and here’s what I submitted: Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay and Rivera. I’m not sure why some voters thought Frankie Rodriguez had a better season than Mo. Save opportunities aren’t a very revealing stat.

As for Nick Swisher, in talking to different people around the game today they all praised his competitive nature and willingness to be a good teammate. Those qualities were diminished with the White Sox last season as he didn’t much like hitting leadoff or playing center as often as he did. It was just a bad fit in Chicago and with Ozzie Guillen. Swisher is a guy who has a personality, which is something the Yankees could use. He’s also said to be friends with Sabathia, which can’t hurt.

Time for the Yankees to remake the team into a front runner in the AL. Sign the following players please:

    1) CC for 6-years at $145MM or more.
    2) AJ for 4-years at $70 MM
    3) Teix for 7-years at $140 MM
    4) Pettite for 1-year at $8MM plus incentives
4A)If Pettite say no, try Penny for 1-year at $8MM.
    5) Sit back and wait for potential salary dump onto the market.

    Go Yankees!!!!!!

The Yanks new Texeira (not the Teixeira with the extra “i”)speaks:

”It’s kind of exciting, to be part of a big league trade,” Texeira said, adding that joining the most successful franchise in major league history adds to the anticipation.

”Definitely. I’m going to see Derek Jeter or Alex Rodriguez walking around, and it’s going to be a big shock,” he said. ”It’s one of the best baseball organizations out there since forever.”

Great coverage on Swisher today. The deal is a steal on its own but it’s important to focus on pitching above all else. With the return of Matsui and Posada along with Cano’s likely recovery, the offense will perform much better.

Centerfield remains the only position where we could see an additional move made.

We need to sign CC Sabathia and either Burnett or Sheets, not to mention Pettitte.

I wonder who they’re targeting for center field. I don’t believe they’re going with Melky/Gardner there and I feel Damon will remain in LF because his defense is not suited for CF.

I can be CC’s friend too.

“Hank Steinbrenner chased down an AP reporter…”

Somehow that just sounds 100% right. :)

Nick Swisher will probably benefit from a change of scenery. It has to be a breath of fresh air for him just to not have Ozzie yelling in his ear anymore.

  10. harwood - Minutes past without signing CC: 1 November 14th, 2008 at 12:35 am

Tex doesnt need friends. Hes a stone cold killer. Sign him.

  11. NITRO November 14th, 2008 at 12:38 am

Texeria is going to see A-Rod and Jeter? Where, in ST? :)

  12. Ed - sign CC immediately November 14th, 2008 at 12:39 am

Does anyone know about the Yanks attempting a little experiment with Justin Christian? I heard on the River Ave Blues podcast that they are planning to turn him into a Chone Figgins (super utilty player, playing the middle infield and the outfield)?

  13. LOL November 14th, 2008 at 12:39 am

Reporters dont want to admit it but they all love Hank he gives them something to write about.

    Hank >>> Obama

I don’t give a damn about Teix right now. Just make it rain on CC

  16. Spyder November 14th, 2008 at 12:40 am

I’m not even a Jets fan but damn that was a hell of a game and a hell of a drive by Favre, he is amazing

  17. CanIGetAMooseCall November 14th, 2008 at 12:40 am

Come on, Moose should have been higher than sixth place. He was great.

  18. Nick in SF November 14th, 2008 at 12:41 am

Ed, I’d be satisfied if they can turn Justin Christian into a player that can get from first to second without falling down.

  19. Colin November 14th, 2008 at 12:41 am

This is what the Yankees should do this offseason:
Sign CC to a 7 year 160M dollar contract.
Sign Tex to a 7 year 147M dollar contract.
Trade Robinson Cano, Dellin Betances, Zack McAllister, and Andrew Brackman for Jake Peavy
Sign Orlando Hudson to a 4 year 44M dollar contract.

Doing this would greatly increase the offensive output and give us the best rotation in the majors. Getting Peavy and CC would allow Joba and Phil to settle in at the back of the rotation with less pressure on them due to having 3 legitimate #1′s ahead of them.
    SP1:CC
    SP2:Peavy
    SP3:Wang
    SP4:Joba
    SP5:Hughes

    1. Damon LF
    2. Jeter SS
    3. Tex 1B
    4. A-Rod 3B
    5. Nady RF
    6. Hudson 2B
    7. Matsui DH
    8. Posada C
    9. Swisher/Gardner CF

    Ed,

The Yankees are doing that with Kevin Russo as well.

  24. Dave D November 14th, 2008 at 12:46 am

Texeira had a 1.33 ERA with a 2.13 GB-AO ratio this year. Struck out a batter per inning too, only 22 yrs old.

Who needs Victorino. You got yourself a local to root for now and he sounds like a pretty grounded kid from what I’ve read tonight.

Colin, that’s a horrible proposal didn’t you read where SWISHER’S PLAYING FIRST AND CANO ISN’T GOING ANYWHERE! everyone want’s to get younger, so lets trade Cano?? good idea,haha.. so in 4 years were looking for a SS and a 2B and then 3years after that, possibly a 3B.. use your heads before you post

“anyway, i don’t know what to think
maybe cashman wanted to have a 1B so teixeira’s price stays low and after he gets tex he’ll give us swish back
I know it sounds kooky, but that the only thing i can come up with
    it’s better for my sanity…”

“and I was for trading Swisher…but shit i thought we could have gotten more than a worse utility man than Uribe and 2 guys I will be playing against next season in the SouthSide Wooden bat league. Doesn’t make sense to trade him before Texiera signed. Also doesn’t make sense that we included the better pitcher of the 3 in the deal. DAMN YOU WILLIAMS!”

  30. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en... let's try '09! November 14th, 2008 at 12:53 am

If the Yankees sign CC, I just wonder what kind of chemistry that he would have with Posada as far as pitch selection and game-calling goes. Things never really clicked with Posada and the Big Unit, due to Johnson’s sullen personality, declining stuff, etc.

Jorge should have a much easier time with CC, though. He doesn’t appear to be nearly as stubborn and set in his ways as Johnson.

  31. Ed - sign CC immediately November 14th, 2008 at 12:53 am

    Nick,

stuff happens. he just had butter-legs that day. lol.

    Mel & Tom,

    Thanks.

  32. Colin November 14th, 2008 at 12:55 am

Aaron, Cano is a headcase. Hudson gives much more effort than him and i would trade Cano for a player of Peavy’s caliber in a second. And Swisher could be an everyday first baseman, but when you have 200-225M to spend every player you have should be an all star. A platoon in center of Swisher and Gardner would be much better than having Swisher play first every day. Also, how do you know Cano isn’t going anywhere, are you the GM?

    _______________________________________________________

Don’t know about that, Ed, but, 2nd base was Christian’s position until he moved to the outfield. He wasn’t real good, but, that was 2005. It would help his value, though if he could play 2nd and a couple other infield spots. He has the speed, footwork and arm.

It’s probable that they will go that route with Justin Snyder, the Charleston 2nd baseman, also. He was drafted as a shortstop.

    Honestly,

Would it shock anyone if we signed Burnett and had him try out for 1st base in Spring Training?

  39. mel November 14th, 2008 at 1:00 am

    GB7,

I like Victorino too much to have some of the vultures here pick him apart. I’d love to see him in pinstripes but he’s safer where he is.

  41. vtred November 14th, 2008 at 1:04 am

Showing players the new Yankee Stadium will be a recruiting tool. Girardi has his pitch ready.

“New York has a heartbeat that you’re going to love, the excitement that the fans bring on a daily basis,” he plans to tell them. “It’s going to be a wonderful experience and you’re going to love your time in New York.”

  42. Bronx Jeers November 14th, 2008 at 1:05 am

I think Pete’s spinning the CC Midnight Madness to divert our attention away from the fact that his Pats just lost a heartbreaker to our Cinderella Jets!

For a Jet fan, this game was our personal Superbowl complete with the Tyree-ception.

Matt Cassel looked like the best 2nd string quarterback since Tom Brady. He was awesome.

  43. Aaron November 14th, 2008 at 1:05 am

Colin, Cash already came out and said that he wasn’t going anywhere.. Gardner is not that good, sorry to break it to you.. and how do you know Cano is a head case?? Do you have contact with him?? If so, ask him if I can have an autograph so I can save it.. and everyone LOVED cano a few years ago.. and yeah, because Kevin Long flying down to the Domincan to help Cano with his swing, mean’s they’re trading him, and Peavy has only thrown 16 innings after the 7th inning.. There’s a guy we wanna empty out of young guys for..
Band wagon fans.. I hate them

    _________________________________________________________

Nah.. Jeter will be gone by 2030. NYY first round draft pick in 2028 will move right in. I’m only concerned that Jeter will leave his little black book in his roster and the kid (Derek Jeter Jr.) gets a date with 75 year old Minka Kelly.

  45. Colin November 14th, 2008 at 1:14 am

Aaron, I’ve been a fan since before you were born. Ahh.. Cashman has NOT said that Cano is off limits once. If you didn’t notice, he’s been mentioned in trade rumors since July. And if you don’t want Peavy, who do you want in the rotation next year?? Your absolute idiocracy astounds me. Are you saying that you would rather have .219 hitter extroardinare Nick Swisher at 1st than a bonified star who will produce at a much higher level. What Cashman says right now will change after he assesses how he can put the best team together and I can tell you that’s a team that will leave Cano out. Because who wouldn’t love a nonchalant second baseman who’s more concerned about looking cool than actually playing baseball? That is what you are getting with Cano!

  46. Aaron November 14th, 2008 at 1:22 am

I’ll bet that Cano doesn’t go anywhere.. we got rid of Wilson Betemit for Swisher, how can you not like that move.. we have to focuse on pitching , having Tex in our line up does not solve our pitching woes. I’d love to have Tex, but realistcialy were not going to have Tex CC and Peavy on our team.. Come on, be real

  47. RSM November 14th, 2008 at 1:43 am

There is no denying that Tex is a great player, but in case you guys haven’t been paying attention, the all-star at every position experiment has been a miserable failure. The team with Scott Brosius and Paul O’Neill did quite a bit better than the one with Giambi and Arod. I like this trade. Guys like Nady and Swisher make the roster look more like 1998 than 2006, and IMO that’s a good thing. Save the big bucks for pitching.

  48. Aaron November 14th, 2008 at 1:47 am

thank you, that’s what I was trying to tell him

  49. RustyJohn November 14th, 2008 at 2:33 am

Uncomfortable with Ozzie Guillen? How is that possible? He seems like such a level headed, sensitive guy who really manages his players well when not throwing them under the bus.

One of these days I expect Guillen to turn into El Indio from “A Few Dollars More” and break out a pocket watch he stole from Magglio Ordonez after sodomizing him. Jay Mariotti will then have to hunt him down and kill him.

  50. jimmy1138 November 14th, 2008 at 3:01 am

Dead on Pete – Lee, Halladay, Rivera. That’s how it should have been. Rodriguez? He’s not even among the best 5 closers in the AL.
    Lee should be MVP too.

  51. Andrew November 14th, 2008 at 9:34 am

I love the Sandman, and our blogging beat writer, but:

    (Innings/VORP/BABIP)
    Lester 210.1 58.2 .302

    Rivera 70.2 34.0 .220

Lester is 3rd in league VORP; Rivera 22nd (and 12th in the DIVISION).

    Stats from Baseball Prospectus.

  52. Jerry from Queens November 14th, 2008 at 9:59 am

Colin, trading for Peavy and giving up on the best Yankees pitching prospects and Cano make no sense. Peavy would require the Yankees to raise his package to that of Santana’s. Peavy’s overall stuff is barely above average. He will not survive in AL East for long. Brackman and Betances have the best pure stuff in the farm system. One of them could be a future Ace. That package would only work for Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain together!!!!!

  53. saucY November 14th, 2008 at 11:46 am
