Girardi’s turn to be a salesman

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Nov 19, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Joe Girardi will be appearing at a charity event this evening and we’ll get a chance to ask him a few questions beforehand. I’m planning to ask him about his role in the free-agent recruiting process.

Money is what ultimately matters in the pursuit of free agents. For the right price, a free agent would happily play for any manager. But some players want to be recruited. They want a tour of the facilities, a nice dinner, a Broadway show for their wife and a nice chat with the manager.

I’m curious to hear how involved Girardi plans to be. Or whether he already has started. With the new Stadium and a changing roster, the Yankees have a lot to offer. And obviously a lot of money, too.

A little difficult to imagine GI Joe as playing a major role in a charm offensive.

I think he would do great selling the Yankees. That dude was smiling ear to ear when he was named manager and did his press conference that day. He loves the Yankees and loved his time in NY as a player! Go get’em Joe!

    Pete,

Can you also ask about Andy Pettitte and if there’s been any progress on that front…and if they’ll think he’ll be patient with the team?

dude also won a few championships as a player, think he knows a little about playing here.

Sabathia, who grew up north of San Francisco in Vallejo, Calif., says he is looking to build a home in the Los Angeles area. He wants a place his family can call home. He and his pregnant wife, Amber, have a son and daughter that turn 5 and 3 this month, with another girl due Oct. 15.

“I told him, ‘How’s $250 million going to look in New York?’ ” says Pirates infielder Doug Mientkiewicz, who played for the Yankees in 2007. “He told me, ‘I’m not going to go there.’ I said, ‘Trust me, dude, you’ll love it there.’ He could handle pitching in New York. He could handle pitching on Mars.”

The Girardi we saw last season in the dugout and dealing with the media is not the same outgoing Girardi we listened to on YES in previous years. The stress of managing the Yankees was/is overwhelming. However, on a “one on one” promo gig with a FA he should do ok.

  9. just on old fashion love song November 19th, 2008 at 1:00 pm

Pie, its hearsay, first of all, not a direct quote, and it could also be taken as CC was not going to get into any type of discussion about his FA status.

No he doesn’t. Again, I wanna see a direct quote that came from CC’s mouth where he himself tells a reporter “Hell to the no I ain’t playing for them yankees”.
Not from what Doug Mientkiewicz said. We don’t even know the context of the convo between the 2.
Was CC joking? Did he have a smile on his face? Was he serious?

How many ball players don’t have a home where they play and one in their home town or state? About zero. Nowhere did it say that Sabathia say he wasn’t going to play in NY. That’s not what that statement says.

  17. SJ44 November 19th, 2008 at 1:08 pm

CC doesn’t have to do anything of the sort. He isn’t in this to placate panicked bloggers. He is in it to set the course for his future.

To that end, he will take his time, examine all the offers and make the best informed decision re: his future.

If some folks can’t handle that, go outside and play and wait until there is actual news.

No sense going crazy over something you can’t control.

Feinsand from his Yankees chat regarding CC:

As good as the Yankees’ offer is, why would Sabathia jump at it without having his agent explore every single option? The offer from the Yankees isn’t going anywhere. I don’t blame him for taking his time.

That said, this idea that he has no interest in pitching for the Yankees amazes me. Would his first choice be to pitch for the Angels, Dodgers or Giants on a $140 million deal? Probably. But he has never said he hates New York, has never said he wouldn’t want to pitch for the Yankees and has never said he wouldn’t return to the AL.

This is all stuff that we’ve heard through “sources” and “friends” of the guy. Why is he waiting? To make sure he’s gotten every single offer out there. Wouldn’t you?

“Interesting read from Tony Massarotti…Teix is in the Sawx’ sight and has been for a long time..Bosox ready to do battle .”

That article was very smoke and mirrors. Massarotti has really been pushing Tex to the Sox angle very hard. I have no idea what they’ll do with Lowell. Massaroitti makes it out as if the Sox have been planning a move on Tex for years and they’d be willing to eat Lowell’s contract. Which I just can’t see.

He also doesn’t buy the idea that the yankees won’t be in on Tex at all.

The yankees will be in on the bidding for Tex. The question is whether they are going to do it aggressively or do it primarily to push up the price that the Angels or Boston has to pay if they get involved.

Is anyone else extatic that CO CO is no longer wondering the outfield and taking away xtra base hits from us? IMO it is a big mistake for them to get rid of him. Elsbury regressed and it seemed like Crisp had some shut down defense vs. us every time he was out there. What happens now if Jacoby goes down? Good trade for us even if we dont grab a royal outfielder. I was rooting for them to do this a year ago.

  27. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 19th, 2008 at 1:18 pm

    SJ,

well spoken. If he doesn’t want to pitch in NY, so be it.

It is out of the fans control regardless of how badly we might want him.

if he isn’t up to the challenge mentally to play on the East coast, that is fine.

of course we’d love to have him, but again, we’re just the fans.

if he turns down 30-40 million to stay on the West Coast, he is an idiot from a financial perspective, but on the flip side, he’ll indicate that money is not as important as being closer to his home state.

I guess what I’d try to sell him on is taking the big payday, finding success in NY for six years, and returning to Cali during his next FA stint.

  28. Trevor November 19th, 2008 at 1:18 pm

This is from Neyer’s “Wangdoodles” (trademark infringement?)

    • From Posnanski, some sort-of news: Mike Mussina has a really good shot at getting into the Coop, and sooner rather than later. Tyler Kepner polled some baseball writers, and 32 of 40 respondents said they would vote for Mussina. Now, there may be a selection bias — I suspect that Kepner’s average respondent is younger than the average Hall of Fame voter. But those results still strike me as both significant and encouraging.

  33. JR Yankees November 19th, 2008 at 1:21 pm

I completely agree with CB. Massarotti has had a hard on for Tex going to the Sox for some time now.

Had the Sox been planning a move for Teixeira all along why would they have given Lowell a 3 year 38M deal just last offseason. Doesn’t make sense.

I think Massarotti is just blowing smoke. If anything, the Sox would be in on Tex to drive up his price.

  34. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 19th, 2008 at 1:22 pm

Williams also had a home in PR. Cone had a home in NY and Toronto and KC. All I’m saying is that just because they play in one place doesn’t mean they won’t build a home in the home town or state. That doesn’t mean much. Once player contracts started going through the roof, they started buying multiple homes. A lot of them lease or sell them to other players if they get traded.

Pie, when you quote a person quoting another it loses all meaning. The “quote” attributed to Sabathia means nothing because he wasn’t being quoted, Mientkiewicz was being quoted. Its entirely different.

A reporter quoting someone saying something directly to them is different from quoting from a second hand source, as this was.

Its obvious that you want to believe otherwise, so there is no sense in discussing it with you. You found a non-quote quote that fits your need, so go run with it.

I’m sure you’ve all been paying attention and have heard the rumors that the Sox will now go hard for Burnett.

I’m of the thought that this is another attempt by them to drive up the price and pull another Pavano on the Yankees.

The Sox are fairly low profile when it comes to their dealings, i.e. – the Crisp trade (who saw that coming). For them to leak that they’re going after Burnett hard seems a bit odd.

Firstly, the don’t need Burnett. If any team is prepared with pitching it’s the Sox. Secondly, the seems to be smarter than that fiscally.

If the Sox do in fact make a blockbuster offer to Burnett, I say let them have him.

There are rumblings today that the Dodgers either have offered or are about to offer Sabathia a six-year contract worth between $110 and $120 million. If he man truly wants to pitch in California, and in the National League, you’d have to think an offer like that could begin to be “close enough” to the Yankees’ offer that he would consider taking it instead

Maybe a grand jury will be called in the 9th circuit. Eyechart will be called in to testify to the veracity of the quote attributed to him. Are you guys really mincing Minky’s words?

    24 Cano,

Dejusus is appealing to some here simply because he’s *not* Melky.

We’ve got two 4th OF competing for the job at this point. If you’re not going to significantly upgrade via trade, then go with Gardner. CB brought up great points about his weaknesses backed up by numbers, but I’ve also seen with my own two eyes where he’s saved a couple wins in the field and had a walkoff win and won another one on the basepaths. That’s +4 in his second callup. So yes, he’s been weak. But I think he’ll improve and brings a lot to the table.

Ichiro is an example of a significant upgrade. Any others?

    GB7,

I don’t think Pie will be on the cubs come the spring. Classic case of a prospect being rushed and ruined. Reminded me a bit of what happens in the NBA when a kid comes out of school way too early, can’t get playing time, can’t get better without playing time and becomes a bust.

Of course Pie had nothing to do with the Cubs pushing him.

Derosa is a good utility guy. Good fit on a good team like the cugs.

Cubbies are getting very lucky this off season – every team in that division appears to be taking significant steps backwards.

Brewers are a mess. The astros – a mess as usual but now appear to be cutting pay roll. St. Louis – not any better and I’d guess many of their out of nowhere players will regress back to expected performance.

The Cubs should have an easy time in that division.

BTW – the cubs right now have the most expensive rotation in baseball. That may not last when the yankees are finished this off season – but for right now its the cubs.

    Scott Boras is REALLY funny:

Boras, according to executives with two different teams interested in Derek Lowe, is telling clubs he wants “a Zito-type contract” for the free-agent right-hander.

That’s Zito, as in Barry Zito, as in seven years, $126 million.

Zito signed the deal before the season in which he turned 29. Lowe, who has averaged 208 innings and a 3.79 ERA the past seven seasons, turns 36 on June 1.

Boras could not be reached Tuesday night, but he has called Lowe “the safest bet” of any free-agent pitcher.

How much would it suck if CC goes to the Dodgers and Burnett returns to Toronto or goes to Boston?

If the Dodgers offer $120, the Yankees increase their offer to at least $150.

It’s hard to leave 30 mil. on the table, never had the experience myself, but at least it seems it would be.

It’s money to be spent by CC’s great grandchildren.

  74. GreenBeret7 November 19th, 2008 at 1:50 pm

According to MLB rumors, Toronto is possibly putting Overbay, Ryan and John McDonald on the market.

  75. Fredo Corleone November 19th, 2008 at 1:51 pm

“So the Dodgers are not interested in Manny anymore?

How can they give CC $120 and Manny $70 million?”

Boras already called the Dodgers offer something other than serious. If they are going to drop really big coin, I think they understand it’s better placed behind Sabathia than Ramirez. Dodgers have a lot coming off the book this offseason and next. They can be serious players for CC and have some room to add a little offense. Not Manny offense, but some nonetheless.

  76. S.o.S. November 19th, 2008 at 1:51 pm

“How can they give CC $120 and Manny $70 million?”

One is worth it and the other they think isnt. Same reason we are offering 140 to C.C. and not making an offer to Teix for the same amount.

  77. Bronx Jeers November 19th, 2008 at 1:51 pm

If CC needs an extra 3-4 mil a year just to play in NY, he can shove it as far as I’m concerned.

  78. grafxkid November 19th, 2008 at 1:52 pm

    I HATE waiting…

  79. mel November 19th, 2008 at 1:52 pm

I don’t think the Yankees view CC as a “get at any cost”.

They’ve already offered a record (barely) contract to CC. If that’s not enough to sway CC, they’ll move on.

They know that CC was not a guarantee and their opening shot was a great one. I can see them upping it a little, but CC won’t see-see $25M from the Yankees.

  80. Trevor November 19th, 2008 at 1:52 pm

I’ll believe the Dodgers are serious players for Sabathia when/if they come out with an offer.

But if the Yankees don’t get Sabathia, he ends up in LA, Burnett back to Toronto or Boston, Lowe to Boston and Peavy doesn’t want to come here. That is as bad an off-season you can have.
We would be looking at the same rotation as last year. And it’s not pretty: Wang,Pettitte,Joba,Hughes,Mussina/Kennedy.

  81. DPF November 19th, 2008 at 1:54 pm

Does anyone know how much $ the Red Sox have coming off the books?

Just curious as we will be bidding head to head with them as always.

    Thanks

  82. Clint November 19th, 2008 at 1:55 pm

    Jeers,

Forget $3-4 million, it will probably take $30-40 million for him to consider us.

  83. RhapsodyInBlue November 19th, 2008 at 1:56 pm

“We would be looking at the same rotation as last year. And it’s not pretty: Wang,Pettitte,Joba,Hughes,Mussina/Kennedy.”

Francesser insists Jober will be in the pen.

  84. pat November 19th, 2008 at 1:56 pm

They’ve shown that CC is the priority but they’ll still play 162 next year with or without him so don’t get crazy.

  85. Bruce 2x November 19th, 2008 at 1:57 pm

If the Dodgers, who are the cheapest of the 3 WC teams are giving a strong, serious offer like that to CC… then It can’t be good for our chances. The Giants and Angels can outbid LAD and have shown they are willing to spend more.

  86. S.o.S. November 19th, 2008 at 1:58 pm

    Trever,
If that was to happen i could see them going after a Peavy or an Oswalt with one of the so called untouchable players.

  87. CB November 19th, 2008 at 1:59 pm

Most interesting part of the Graziano article on Sabbathia – the Jays might consider trading Halladay and rebuilding.

Halladay has 2 more years on his deal totaling $30M.

I can’t imagine how much talent it would take to trade for him given his talent, track record and contract.

He’s been one of the five best pitchers in baseball for years, arguably has the nastiest stuff in the game and throws a ton of innings.

“Toronto is in on the A.J. Burnett free-agent negotiations, but some think they’re just in it to make things look good, and that the Blue Jays actually will cut payroll. That wouldn’t necessitate trading Halladay, but he is slated to make $30 million over the next two years, could bring back a treasure trove of talent and may not want to stick around in Toronto if the Jays decide to rebuild. Toronto did some quiet snooping around the trade deadline to see what kind of package they could get if they did put Halladay on the market, and the Dodgers were said to be the potential trade partner they found most appealing.”

  88. jennifer November 19th, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Okay I realize as an agent you are supposed to blow smoke up GM’s butts. That you are supposed to start at an amount higher than you think you will get, so teams think they are getting a deal. But Barry Zito didn’t even deserve the Barry Zito deal, on what planet does Lowe deserve that kind of a deal?

  89. GreenBeret7 November 19th, 2008 at 2:01 pm

CB, you’re right about the Cubs messing up Pie. He could have been a fine little player. I just never figured out who he reminded me of. When I first saw him, a young Willie Davis came to mind. I just never saw him get above “he could bethe next…”.

  90. CB November 19th, 2008 at 2:01 pm

“Does anyone know how much $ the Red Sox have coming off the books? ”

Boston has a ton of money coming off the books. Around $40M I think. That’s close to 1/3 of their 2008 pay roll I believe.

They have a lot of money to spend this winter.

  91. Mark (Brett is back) November 19th, 2008 at 2:01 pm

I love that Mike is just making up Gardner’s stats in AAA.

  92. Devil's Advocate November 19th, 2008 at 2:01 pm

If we don’t get CC or Burnett, it’s going to be a LONG year next year. Don’t even bother signing Lowe/Sheets or anyone because we won’t seriously contend anyway.

Yes, we’ll have Wang healthy, but we will presumably lose Mussina, who had a better year last year than any year Wang has had. So it evens out or even worsens. Plus we would have lost 50 HRs/200 RBIs from Giambi/Abreu.

Wow, It is horrifying to think about next year’s team with no big FAs and losing 3 of our most productive players this year (Mussina, Giambi, Abreu) without any tangible replacements.

  93. Pie November 19th, 2008 at 2:02 pm

to quote Peter, if the yanks don’t sign CC it will be a “disaster”

  94. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 19th, 2008 at 2:03 pm

    Trevor,

I’d agree that’d be a bad offseason, but if that’s what happens, then money has taken a backseat and people don’t want to play in NY.

I think both of those are silly and unreal possibilities.

    Mel,

I disagree…I think $25 million is what the Yankees will end up paying for CC if they do get him. If he doesn’t take that, I’m glad he isn’t playin in NY because he is obviously crazy.

  95. ariel November 19th, 2008 at 2:04 pm

I question whether the Sox are in (or will be in) the bidding for AJ, Lowe and Teix, “to drive the price up for the Yankees”. This is not the Santana deal where that probably was their focus, at least in part, since the Yankees would have given up “prospects” to the Twins….the more the better from the Sox standpoint. The Sox, as most, believe the Yankees have a bottomless pit of $$$$ and will always spend so being in the game to drive the price up in the FA market is dubious (IMO) at best. Giving up players, yes, Yankee $$$$$, no.

As to Teix, they have always have had some level of interest. The wild card is Youk, who can be moved around. As to Lowell, they might have to carry some of his contract if he were to be traded to accommodate Teix. In my view it is doable from the Sox vantage point, but doubtful from that of Teix. Lurking in the background is the bitter taste that remains from the games they played with him in the 99 draft. Boras will use the Sox in an attempt to drive the price up….As sharp as Theo is, he well knows that Teix in Fenway is most unlikely, but he will still play the game. And a game it is. Believe nothing you read or hear, it is all hype.

  96. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 19th, 2008 at 2:05 pm

And ya, Graziano…not sure about that guy. Now he has the Blue Jays fielding offers for Halladay. What a yutz.

They’re going to offer Burnett 13-14/year, but are willing to trade Halladay who is at 15/year? So logical…NOT!

  97. Bronx Jeers November 19th, 2008 at 2:05 pm

Do the Giants need him? That’s a lot of money for 2 lefties. I guess then they could trade for a bat.

The Angels still need a 1B and a closer. I think they’ll land Tex. They don’t have such a great need either.

The Dodgers have the greatest need out there.

  98. Jeff November 19th, 2008 at 2:05 pm

We will get Burnett if we miss out on CC. Cashman will be forced to throw in the extra year. Boston and Toronto won’t give him the 5th year. So… Burnett is the safety net. The problem is if the CC things drags out and AJ goes somewhere else before we have a chance to give him a blow away offer.

That’s why I think it is very important to keep tabs on Burnett. Do not let him slip away.

  99. CB November 19th, 2008 at 2:06 pm

“I just never saw him get above “he could bethe next…”.”

Agreed. Somehow he got this label of being a 5 tool superstar – and he was never going to be that. Just was never going to hit for enough power.

The Cubs somehow pumped him up or convinced themselves (and their fans…) that Pie was much better than he was ever going to be. As if were Justin Upton or something…

Instead of a a player like Coco Crisp – they ruined him.

  100. Paulie November 19th, 2008 at 2:06 pm

CC also stopped construction on his dream house this summer because he was unsure of his future destination.

    ..

No, he can’t. Just yesterday on Jim Rome, CC said that he’s still going to live full time there, no matter where he plays, and that he house is coming along fine.

Where do you come up with this crap, SJ?

  101. mel November 19th, 2008 at 2:07 pm

    Pie,

LOL. It won’t be a disaster. A great challenge, but not a disaster. Believe it or not, CC is not the only good pitcher out there.

The Yankees strategy is brilliant IMO. They put the big offer out there to test how badly CC wants to come here. It’s not even a matter of how close the WC teams have to get to our offer. If a guy is going to turn his nose to that offer, his heart’s not in it. And the Yankees can respect that.

If they wanted to get into a bidding war with other teams, they would’ve simply raised Milwaukee’s offer and let the games begin.

  102. Trevor November 19th, 2008 at 2:07 pm

S.o.S, they can’t trade for Peavy if he doesn’t want to play here. So he’s not an option. Like I said a terrible off-season, No Sabathia, no Burnett, no Lowe, no Peavy.

And even if they don’t get Sabathia and Lowe is signed, he’s not an ace. He’s a nice number 3/4 starter. Might as well bring Pettitte back if that’s what you want.
Burnett? Can’t count on him as your ace not when he’s be hurt a lot in his career. and is somewhat shaky against lesser teams. He’s always had great stuff but hasn’t lived up to it.
I like Wang but he’s not an ace. He’s a great number 2. I like strike out pitchers to be my ace. and in the postseason.
IMO it would be devastating if Sabathia doesn’t sign here.

  103. Pie November 19th, 2008 at 2:09 pm

    But mel,

Peter said it would be a disaster.

  104. EDUB November 19th, 2008 at 2:09 pm

    CB,

I found that the most interesting part also. What would be the motivation behind this? Cutting payroll? Also they probably would never trade in the same division but Halladay has probably the nastiest stuff in the game right now IMO.

  105. Zolio November 19th, 2008 at 2:09 pm

The Angels could enter the CC sweepstakes if they feel they are going nowhere in the Teixeria negotiations and other teams are going higher than they want to and they are not interested in dragging this thing out. So then would then move on to CC and use someone like Ervin Santana or the plethora of pitching they have to fetch them a bat.

The Giants are not very smart, so they could get into the bidding. They could then decide to shop Cain for a young bat. He is from Vallejo anyway so they might feel he is a great marketing tool.

Remember, these teams don’t have to outbid us or match our bid… they merely have to get close enough to us like the Dodgers are with their $120 mil bid. Thats why these teams have the advantage… they will bank on CC taking a discount to come there so they don’t have to break the bank for him.

  106. mel November 19th, 2008 at 2:10 pm

    Mad Prince,

Do you think it’s worth it to pay a pitcher $25M? Do you think that smart baseball people would think that’s a good idea?

I don’t. Unless he’s Babe Freaking Ruth and is going to DH for us. But he barely hits above the Mendoza line.

  107. S.o.S. November 19th, 2008 at 2:11 pm

If we lose out on Burnett and C.C.. We should assemble a team that will slug their way to a title. Add Teix and Manny with some of that money and hope we can shred good pitching.

  108. stuart November 19th, 2008 at 2:12 pm

this is what the yanks should do this offseason. sign CC(6 yrs.) and Pettitte(1 yr $11 mill.).

If Dejesus is available at a good deal for a pen arm or 2 make the trade and that is it.

staff; cc, wang, joba, pettitte, and hughes..backups; aceves, kennedy, and others down the road….

pen; loaded.veras, mariano, coke, marte, robertson, ramirez, melncon, and more good arms

lineup; jorge, swisher, cano, jeter, arod, damon, gardner, nady, and matsui.

If they get Dejesus Gardner and or melky off the bench along with Molina, Miranda, and others..

This team can win, will have a $160 mill or less payroll.. This will give them flexibility for later in the year…This team can win…….

  109. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009. Show CC the money and stay away from Peavy! November 19th, 2008 at 2:12 pm

Oh No. Not the Steelers/Chargers ending again

  110. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 19th, 2008 at 2:12 pm

    Paulie,

SJ often has a lot of legit, well grounded information that he shares on here. By and large, I think he is usually honest.

But every so often he throws something innane out there that is trusted by many since he has been on here so long spreading the news and his opinion.

You have learn to separate the trash from the recycling bin with SJ44.

CC is from and lives in California. He is going to continue that probably until the day he dies. Why? Because California is the greatest state in the US and he is a multi-millionaire who can enjoy all of its sunny luxuries.

BUT, that doesn’t mean he won’t buy a gorgeous apartment in NY that he plans to live in while pitching for the Yankees.

  111. Bronx Jeers November 19th, 2008 at 2:13 pm

I wouldn’t mind seeing Halladay going to LA that’s for sure. Obviously I’d give a kidney to get him here but I dare not dream.

    I don’t think it’s true anyway.

It’s getting confusing. Wake me in Feb.

  112. ariel November 19th, 2008 at 2:13 pm

    Devils Advocate,

If what you fear comes to pass, Cashman may have to change direction and focus on acquiring the two Big Bats in an attempt to maintain a competitive stance…and whatever can be patched together for a mound presence.

  113. Chris NY November 19th, 2008 at 2:13 pm

25M/year is only 10M over the Yankees first offer on a 6 year contract. There’s no reason they wouldn’t go up by another ten million if they had to. Where they may refuse is that their offer is likely already higher than anyone elses. Meaning, if no-one else comes up to 140, they MAY say, look, ours is the highest offer, we’re not going to increase the margin when we’re still the highest.

But that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t go up another ten if someone came in at 120 or 130 and it took another 10 to convince CC to ignore the Angels, Giants, Dodgers, or whoever would offer the 120/130… If he has 120 on the table and says he’ll leave 20M on the table to stay home, you can bet the Yankees will more likely test him on that with another 10M before they’ll walk away.

And anyone who thinks it’s impossible to leave 20M on the table, think of it in terms of percentage: 120M is about 85% of 140M. Lots of people in the world take much bigger pay cuts than 15% in order to take a job close to home instead of traveling for a living or driving an hour each way to work everyday. Not saying it’s going to happen, but 120M isn’t exactly chump change.

  114. Fire Meachum November 19th, 2008 at 2:13 pm

There is no way to rationalize how we will be a playoff team without CC.

Unless we are banking on BOS/TB to get injuries or in the Rays case, go through a “sophomore” slump. That isin’t a smart strategy for a billion dollar franchise – bank on injuries.

However if CC doesn’t come here and leaves $40 million on the table, there is nothing we can do. We just have to accept the fact it will be another rebuilding year. The worst thing people (organization and the fans) can do is be in denial and convince ourselves that we are a playoff team.

  115. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 19th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

    mel,

I’m not saying it is necessarily smart to give him $25, but I still think they will.

They got a new ballpark that is an alleged gold mine on its way to being discovered. So, its one of those risks they can take relatively easily.

They need an Ace, want one for the new home, and figure CC to fit that bill. So upping their annual offer from 23.33/year to 25 is pocket change to the Yankees.

  116. stuart November 19th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

I pass on Burnett at any price.

Lowe for 3 years is not a bad move but he is a 3 or 4….

Everything is contingent on the Yanks getting CC, if that does not occur we have problems…

  117. Laura - Ready for '09 November 19th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Burnett’s not signing anywhere until he finds out what CC gets. Same for Lowe.

  118. Fredo Corleone November 19th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

“The only question left is whether he should go in as a yankee or oriole?”

You’d have to think the O’s, but it’s probably close.

By my count, he’s 123-72 with a 3.87 ERA for the Yankees vs. 147-81 with a 3.53 for the O’s. 7 top 6 finishes in the Cy vote with the O’s to 2 with the Yankees. 45 complete games and 15 shutouts with the O’s to 12 and 8 with the Yankees. He’s obviously been in more postseason games with the Yankees, but his best postseason was his 1997 effort with Baltimore.

Either way, pretty damn good career all the way around.

  119. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 19th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

    Bronx Jeers,

The Jays traded Clemens to the Yankees…so dreaming isn’t necessarily bad, right? :)

It’d be doubtful for sure, but who knows.

  120. sweet lou November 19th, 2008 at 2:16 pm

I agree with those who say if we miss out on CC, we need to acquire Teix and Manny. Trade Nady somewhere, Swisher to right, Damon to CF.

Just have to slug your way to a title and hope Hughes/Kennedy/Joba can be adequate.

The good news is that Boras is going to drag out everything so those 2 big bats will still be there after CC is gone.

  121. Chris NY November 19th, 2008 at 2:17 pm

Mel, if you don’t think 25M is smart to pay a pitcher, do you think 23.33 is? That’s the difference, we’ve already offered him 23 1/3….. another 1.6 per year doesn’t really change it from a smart move to a dumb one. If you were to think 25 is too much, I would think 23 1/3 is too…..

  122. Dr. J November 19th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

Honestly, I’d have no problem offering 7/$175 if it came down to it.

  123. S.o.S. November 19th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

    Trevor,
I can understand your view. But if we have 3 to 4 #2′s it would give us a chance to win a title. C.C. is an ACE and has stunk up the joint in the playoffs. The Cardinals won the championship without a staff of Aces. If we have a decent lineup, all we would need is pitchers that keep us in games. I dont think we had 3 Aces in our dynasty years. Lots of 2′s.

  124. Chris NY November 19th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

Sorry, the mad prince beat me to it…

  126. CB November 19th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

“What would be the motivation behind this? Cutting payroll? ”

No not simply cutting payroll. What Granziano was suggesting is that the Jays are contemplating blowing up the whole team and starting from scratch.

The Jays are in a perpetually difficult position trying to compete with the Yanks and Sox. Now throw in the Rays. On top of that the Orioles have really put together some very, very good young talent in the minors – they are years ahead of the jays there.

So the decision for the Jays is whether or not they try to muddle along as they have been (they though 2008 could be their break out year). Or blow it up and start again.

Cliff Lee won the Cy Young but Roy Halladay was the best pitcher in the AL this year. Either CC or Halladay were the best pitchers in baseball in 2008.

Halladay had an ERA of 2.78, ERA+ 154 and a WHIP of 1.05.

Around half of his starts came against the Sox, Yankees and Rays.

Remarkable what he did against the level of completition he had to face.

If Toronto wants to blow up things up and start again, I can’t imagine how much talent they’d get back for him.

From the Dodgers alone – start with Clayton Kershaw, Billingsley and then keep adding…

  127. mel November 19th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

    Mad Prince,

I know the Yankees can afford it, I just don’t think it’s smart.

CC is not worth $25M. More if we don’t get under the luxury tax threshold.

Seriously, if the Yankees wanted to get into a bidding war with other teams they would’ve done it the traditional way. So now fans are expecting the Yankees to outbid themselves for a lifestyle premium? It’s already $20M more than what LA would probably offer. (let’s get serious, Milwaukee’s a nice memory at this point)

  128. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 19th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

    Chris,

Yes, as a matter of fact, I do think that’s too much. But I can accept it because CC in pinstripes would be nice. But 23.3 is ridiculous when Wang has been nearly as good as CC.

  133. Trevor November 19th, 2008 at 2:22 pm

“Everything is contingent on the Yanks getting CC, if that does not occur we have problems…”

Yep that’s pretty much what said. Burnett is not a great option no matter how much SJ tries to spin it.
This team needs an ace. Lowe/Burnett don’t fit that description.

It’s not like some dude turning down 20$ per hour to make 17$ closer to home.

  136. Yank1 November 19th, 2008 at 2:24 pm

If we miss out on CC and AJ, then just put Hughes, Coke, etc. in the rotation and let them take their lumps. We won’t be a playoff team anyway, so let them take their lumps and hopefully they’ll be ready for 2010 and hopefully we’ll have better luck in the 2010 FA class.

Even Burnett is no lock considering he has only pitched more than 170 innings 3 times in his career. CC is the only sure thing.

Worst thing they can do is make a cosmetic move like Lowe or Garland. Let the kids pitch, it will be a 2nd rebuilding year anyway.

  137. pat November 19th, 2008 at 2:24 pm

“Seriously, if the Yankees wanted to get into a bidding war with other teams they would’ve done it the traditional way.”

Thank you. The lines are closed, we have a winner!

  138. ariel November 19th, 2008 at 2:26 pm

Gammons is not only annnoying, but a shill for the Red Sox and one whose opinions are typically off the mark. I choose not to read him.

The pundit I respect the most is Jon Heyman. He is on the money far more often than most, and if it’s his opinion or speculation he will tell you. If it’s source-based, he will let you know.

  139. Phil November 19th, 2008 at 2:27 pm

Yank1, the Yankees are opening a new stadium, they are not gonna do that while asking their fans to be patient while kids take their lumps. That might be wiser than the course they are taking, but they’re not opening the new stadium without some new big names.

  140. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 19th, 2008 at 2:27 pm

    West Coast Guy,

I was making that point in the sense that he won’t be moving his whole family out here. He’ll pitch in NY, have an apartment there, and live in Cali in the offseason where he’d presumably leave his children and wife and extended family.

  141. CB November 19th, 2008 at 2:27 pm

“$25 million isin’t unreasonable. Infact, thats what he will probably end up getting if he signs here.”

One way to figure out how valuable a player is in terms of money is to see how many wins better than a replacement level pitcher he is.

In general, for a team like the yankees one additional marginal win is worth $5 million dollars.

CC was around 5.5 wins better than a replacement level pitcher.

For one season CC is worth $25M. Now whether that’ll last over 6 season no one knows…

That said – I think the yankees will be very elastic on price for CC. They are going to spend whatever it takes – $25M, $26 whatever.

This is a strategic decision for them IMO – one they’ve been building around for at least the past year.

Part of why they let Santana go last year is because they knew CC was available this year.

    7 yrs/ 175M – I think they would do that.

  142. SJ44 November 19th, 2008 at 2:28 pm

    Its not “crap”.

Did I say he wouldn’t be living in California? No.

I said he stopped construction on the house in the summer, which he did, because he was unsure of his future destination.

The reason why I wrote it was because of all the people who come on here on a daily basis telling the world “CC doesn’t want to play in NY”.

If he “didn’t want to play in NY”, he wouldn’t have stopped construction on the house.

I have no doubt he will finish the house. Its not like he won’t have the money to finish it.

My point was he did slow down construction of it until he future plans were finalized.

Not the actions of someone who is completely discounting playing somewhere other than Southern California.

Its not exactly “breaking news” since Olney, Heyman, and several others reported it when it they got wind of it during the summer.

If you choose not to believe it, fine by me.

  143. Trevor November 19th, 2008 at 2:29 pm

Didn’t the Blue Jays turned down a deal last off-season that would have sent Alex Rios to the Giants for Lincecum?
If I were the Blue Jays I would have done that deal.

  144. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 19th, 2008 at 2:29 pm

Dodger want to play hardball eh…

Cash whip it out ! :)

  145. S.o.S. November 19th, 2008 at 2:29 pm

Why dont we go 200 million? Come on guys, we know hes an Ace and all but he himself alone isnt getting us to the promise land. Its not like hes been Beckett like in the playoffs. Or hasnt had his struggles as recent as last April. He dominated in the N.L. last year. He is over weight and has a lot of mileage in that arm. Highest paid player im good with. Arod contract,im not.

  146. Fredo Corleone November 19th, 2008 at 2:30 pm

“The pundit I respect the most is Jon Heyman.”

Disagree. Heyman is as much a Yankees rumswab as Gammons is one for the Red Sox (probably why many here like him). He has no more credibility than other national guys.

  147. Laura - Ready for '09 November 19th, 2008 at 2:31 pm

This whole “I want to live in CA” doesn’t even make sense. Don’t most of the guys leave their wife and kids in the state they want to live in? Wasn’t that why Munson was flying back and forth to OH? Who says that CC can’t have his primary residence be in California and leave his wife and kids there? He’s going to be on the road half the time anyway. How much time is he actually going to be spending in NY or CA?

  148. mel November 19th, 2008 at 2:32 pm

    LOL, SoS.

And yes! Aces do grow on trees (or farms).

  149. Trevor November 19th, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Hopefully Gammons isn’t part of the new baseball network.

  150. 27 in 08 November 19th, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Why does CC think that he needs to settle down in the NY area if he signs here?

Pettitte’s kids go to school in Houston and I’m sure his wife spends a good portion of the season there.

A-Rod’s family has always been in Miami except for periodic visits.

Damon and his wife live in Orlando

Mussina’s family and kids are in PA

Joba’s girlfriend and son stay in Nebraska

Bruney’s family lives in Alabama, Farnsworth’s was in Georgia.

CC only has to work here part time. He doesn’t have to move his life to NY, none of the other players did.

  151. ariel November 19th, 2008 at 2:32 pm

More on Gammons…IN July 07, he said on the Michael Kay show that it was a 95% chance that A-Rod would opt out and the Yankees would not re-sign him. In October 07, again on Kay’s show, he said that it was a 90% likelihood that A-Rod would not opt out. Wrong on both accounts; I would like to know the basis for his calculations.

  152. Fredo Corleone November 19th, 2008 at 2:32 pm

“Didn’t the Blue Jays turned down a deal last off-season that would have sent Alex Rios to the Giants for Lincecum?”

Thought it was theother way around.

  153. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 19th, 2008 at 2:33 pm

    ariel,

I completely agree. Gammons is no longer worth reading on a regular basis unless you want to read about the Red Sox.

He used to be like a fly on poo for everything baseball. I don’t have a problem with him going back to his roots, I’m just not sure it has a place on ESPN.

Go work for the Globe and rot in peace.

  154. Joe I November 19th, 2008 at 2:34 pm

    “Cash whip it out !”

That’s what Mrs. Cash usually says.

  155. R-Tek November 19th, 2008 at 2:34 pm

Gammons is insufferable. Worse than Steve Phillips. Such a propaganda machine.

The day after we made our offer to CC, he threw cold water all over it saying that our attempt to scare him won’t work and he wants to go West so badly and isin’t even thinking about our offer.

  156. CB November 19th, 2008 at 2:36 pm

“Heyman is as much a Yankees rumswab as Gammons is one for the Red Sox ”

    Fredo,

Come on! Heyman has a lot of connection to the yankees from his old beat reporter days but to say that’s the same as Gammons is just false equivalence.

I like Gammons. But he actively roots for the Sox while he’s on TV. He’s rooting for them. That’s his deal.

Comes up all the time – just small stuff. I’ll never forget when the Yankees announced their pick of Gerrit Cole in the draft his year. Is it really that big a deal? I thought Gammons was going to start crying…

Gammons isn’t really anti-yankees but he is an active, red sox fan.

There’s no one like him on any national sports media that I can think of. No one quite like that – at least on TV.

  157. Clint November 19th, 2008 at 2:37 pm

7/$175 should be the final offer.

Don’t go there until the 11th hour and it looks like CC is about go to West. The key is not to panic and overexpose yourself. Keep all the weapons in your back pocket. We still have yet to send players/management out to SF or invite him here for a tour. We will systematically fire our shots. If the Dodgers offer of $120 is true, expect the next shot to be fired.

  158. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 19th, 2008 at 2:37 pm

    ariel,

the basis for his calculations were a recent aneurysm, old age, and an underlying hope that the Yankees lose A-Rod.

    “But you’re so….OOOOOLLD!”

I kinda feel mean for saying this, but also think its kinda true…partially???…maybe?…a little bit?

  159. Bob November 19th, 2008 at 2:37 pm

BJ Ryan is all done, washed up since his surgery I would not trade for him.

Mussina NEVER gets in the hall, or at least not until Blileven, Kaat, and some others get in first.

I agree the Sox do not broadcast who they want, so Burnett is simply a drive up the price for Yankees.

CC does not want to come to NYC, I can understand why. Players used to want to come here to collect a ring, now this is not a place to get a ring. Do mot flame me, just look at the recent history.

Sox undersold on Crisp, Ellsbury is ok but will not be a great hitter, he is fast but is not a great fielder. At least he IS young and cost controlled.

Both the Sox and the Yankees will sign someone no one saw coming. The Sox a Japanese pitcher, the Yankees? Who knows, Cashman plays it REAL tight to the vest, we will be surprised.

Melky was terrible, and Gardener will amount to nothing. Look for the Yankees to sign a real center fielder.

Everyone has opinions, and these are mine. This is an open forum for baseball fans to express opinions. I am not sure why fans have to out yell and outshout each other, I find everyone’s opinions interesting for their own reasons.

  160. mel November 19th, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Oi, I can’t believe this. I was the only one who wanted Burnett, and now virtually every AL & NL East team is interested in him.

  161. Trevor November 19th, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Fans are insane: Cano,Melky “some minor league talent” for Aaron Rowand and Cain. Why would anyone want Rowand’s contract?

  162. Pie November 19th, 2008 at 2:39 pm

    Sj you’re toooo funny.

what’s CC gonna do with a half-way home ? is he living in the finished part or the unfinished part?

  163. Fredo Corleone November 19th, 2008 at 2:40 pm

    CB:

We’ll have to respectfully disagree. Not a big Gammons fan by any means, but Heyman does nothing for me either. I think on a national basis, Rosenthal runs circles around ‘em both.

  164. AJ YANKS November 19th, 2008 at 2:40 pm

The problem with Heyman isin’t that he is a Yankees groupie, its that he feeds into Francessa.

Heyman’s information is good but it gets diluted when he presents it in a manner that appeases Francessa or adds random things that Francessa likes to hear such as the veterans don’t like Girardi (because Francessa loves Torre so much he was excited to hear that), or that he wants Joba in the bullpen or he would have made the Santana trade or something just for the sake of agreeing with Francessa.

Pure information though, nobody gets better than Heyman. His analysis leaves much to be desired, however.

  165. Pie November 19th, 2008 at 2:41 pm

    R-Tek-

“The day after we made our offer to CC, he threw cold water all over it saying that our attempt to scare him won’t work and he wants to go West so badly and isin’t even thinking about our offer.”

Gammons is insufferable, but it looks like he was right.

  166. SJ44 November 19th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

John Henry LOVES AJ Burnett. They aren’t in it just to drive up the price. They are in it because they are very interested in him for the same reason the Yankees are interested in him.

The Sox need pitching. Dice-K is a guy that is getting closer and closer to being a 5 inning pitcher. He may have been the luckiest pitcher in baseball last year. Can you honestly expect him to have a year like that next year if he keeps walking people at the pace he is walking them?

Lester is terrific and Beckett and Wakefield are coming off injury filled seasons.

Buchholz may get traded for a catcher. If he doesn’t, he’s in the same place as Hughes. Needing another year in AAA to overcome a bad season in the majors.

The Sox need pitching and their owner loves Burnett. Translation…..they will be right in the thick of things for Burnett’s services.

  167. vtred November 19th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

    Rosenthal is a schill.

Olney is better than all of them. Locally, Newsday is far and away the best source.

  168. Laura - Ready for '09 November 19th, 2008 at 2:44 pm

“Everyone has opinions, and these are mine.”

Thanks for sharing them. I found them interesting, although I disagree that NY isn’t a place to get a ring. As long as the Steinbrenner’s own the club, we will always be trying to win it all. There are several other clubs that can’t say that. That still has some pull for players.

“I am not sure why fans have to out yell and outshout each other, I find everyone’s opinions interesting for their own reasons.”

Most Yankees fans are New Yorkers. That probably has something to do with the yelling and shouting. :)

  169. mel November 19th, 2008 at 2:44 pm

I like Keith Law. He thinks along the lines of a front office person.

  170. SJ44 November 19th, 2008 at 2:44 pm

How is Gammons “right” about CC? Did CC make his announcement as to where he is playing yet?

Why don’t we just wait until he does before making “who was right” announcements.

  171. John November 19th, 2008 at 2:44 pm

Cashman can not, under any circumstances, lose Burnett to Boston.

Give him 5 years if he wants, just do not let Boston get him. Not only is he our backup plan for CC, he would also give us a dominant rotation and keeps him away from Boston. The players have been lobbying for him for months.

  172. CB November 19th, 2008 at 2:44 pm

    Fredo,

I was just having some fun. Believe me – I don’t think Heyman is that great. He basically just writes what Boras leaks to him. I think Gammons has a much better understanding of the game than him. Rosenthal is fine.

Guys at baseball prospectus, IMO, are much better than any of them. Though I guess they do different things.

I like Neyer and Olney more than Heyman and Rosenthal. But it’s just splitting hairs.

Gammons cracks me up. I really though he was going to cry on national televison because the yankees drafted gerritt cole…

  173. Laura - Ready for '09 November 19th, 2008 at 2:46 pm

Francessa is supposed to be a Yankee fan, but you wouldn’t know it from listening to him. I caught some of yesterday’s show and the way he was drooling over the Hobbitt was embarrassing.

  174. Fredo Corleone November 19th, 2008 at 2:46 pm

“The Sox need pitching and their owner loves Burnett. Translation…..they will be right in the thick of things for Burnett’s services.”

True, but Epstein would remove his own appendix with a shrimp fork before he goes 5 years on him. If the Yankees go that 5th year, I believe they are going to get him.

  175. Bob November 19th, 2008 at 2:46 pm

Laura I appreciate your feedback, you make a lot of sense with those comments

SJ44 you also make a lot of sense.

I have been reading this blog for awhile and enjoy the spirited discourse, and the level of intensity.

  176. E-Man November 19th, 2008 at 2:47 pm

“For the right price, a free agent would happily play for any manager.”

    BS.

  177. Bruce 2x November 19th, 2008 at 2:47 pm

I’m starting to wonder if CC’s agent will even give us the opportunity to match the WC team’s final offer when the time comes.

I could see CC telling his agent not to even bother getting a counter offer from us because it will make things too confusing and he doesn’t want to go through the stress again and he wants it to end.

  178. Fredo Corleone November 19th, 2008 at 2:48 pm

“I like Keith Law. He thinks along the lines of a front office person”

I like Law too. No bias in him. He hates everybody.

  179. Sevendust November 19th, 2008 at 2:49 pm

When we do submit an offer to Burnett, I think it needs to be 5 years. Force Boston to match it. It would be in our best interests to lock him up as quickly as possible.

  180. Laura - Ready for '09 November 19th, 2008 at 2:49 pm

“How is Gammons “right” about CC? Did CC make his announcement as to where he is playing yet? Why don’t we just wait until he does before making “who was right” announcements.”

It’s clear that a lot of fans thought that CC was going to jump all over that offer the day we made it. Sorry folks, that’s not how it works. $140mil is a lot of cash, but he’d be insane not to wait to see what else is out there. I, for one, am not concerned that he hasn’t responded yet. We’ve got plenty of time; it’s not like the offer is going anywhere.

  181. Jorge Tabata November 19th, 2008 at 2:49 pm

I think George King the 3rd is the best writer out there.

  182. SJ44 November 19th, 2008 at 2:49 pm

Out of all the national info guys, I think Buster Olney is the best by a mile.

He has the best sources (except for Gammons, who is more of a fan than reporter these days), keeps it balanced, and doesn’t act like a buffoon.

Rosenthal has good sources with the Dodgers and Angels. All too often though, he seems to a day late and a dollar short on some things.

Heyman? He is Scott Boras’ #1 shill in the media. He is basically an extension of the Scott Boras Corporation.

Boras has been feeding him info for years and that’s Heyman’s main source for info.

Nobody has better Yankee sources than Buster. He is one of the few guys who have kept his good sources years after leaving the beat.

Now that George is somewhat incapacitated, leaving Bill Madden without a direct source, I don’t think anybody in the media has better Yankee sources than Buster at this time.

  183. stuart November 19th, 2008 at 2:50 pm

    Burnett sucks.

Look his #’s not 3 starts against the yanks..

The same people begging to sign that trash will be whining about his signing in about July when he would be 7 – 7 with a + 4 ERA..

    Burnett is a mirage……

  184. West side November 19th, 2008 at 2:51 pm

The big question is when do we increase our offer to CC?

Do we wait for a team to match our dollar amount or is the mere threat of LAD offering $120 and CC willing to take a discount enough to get us to go to the $150 plateau?

  185. Fredo Corleone November 19th, 2008 at 2:52 pm

“I could see CC telling his agent not to even bother getting a counter offer from us because it will make things too confusing and he doesn’t want to go through the stress again and he wants it to end.”

Too confusing?? Don’t think so. Two things in play here. What he wants for himself and his family and 5th grade math.

He knows what his preferences are and will spend sometime measuring them against the numbers.

  186. vin November 19th, 2008 at 2:53 pm

“That said – I think the yankees will be very elastic on price for CC. They are going to spend whatever it takes – $25M, $26 whatever.”

They will spend whatever it takes, but they’re not going to foolishly bid against themselves, as I’ve seen people on here suggest. Meaning, if the Angels/Dodgers/Giants/etc. offers 6/135, then Cash WILL proceed with 6/140. He WILL NOT be bullied into going over AND ABOVE to make it work. If the high WC bid is in the 140 range, Cash, or any smart business man, will not say “OK, here’s 160, please work for us.”

  187. patrick mac November 19th, 2008 at 2:53 pm

    stuart,

so would you be happy if boston got him and added him to beckett, dice-k, and lester?

because thats what will happen if we dont get him

  188. bdog375 November 19th, 2008 at 2:53 pm

Jeter does not even live in New York – he lives in Tampa in the offseason.

  189. CB November 19th, 2008 at 2:53 pm

I agree that the sox interest in Burnett is sincere.

They definitely need another starter for next year.

Burnett absolutely kills both the Sox and the Yankees. Neither team seems to have a clue on how to hit that guy for whatever reason.

This is going to be in the background of any bidding on him.

Burnett’s relative sucess in the AL east while pitching against both the sox and yanks for the past few years is a level of performance few pitchers in baseball can hope to match.

That peak performance is always going to attract money…

  190. Bob November 19th, 2008 at 2:54 pm

When you say that someone is a shill ( Heyman) does that mean he is actually paid by Boras? If not, what would the incentive be for someone to be, in this case, Boras’s mouthpiece?

  191. SJ44 November 19th, 2008 at 2:54 pm

    Fredo,

That’s true. Sometimes though, you bend to the owners wishes.

Theo wanted Manny out of Boston for years. It was John Henry who kept insisting they keep him.

Even near the end, Henry was still advocating working things out with Manny. It wasn’t until the key players meeting when Henry realized the situation couldn’t be salvaged.

If Henry wants to go to a 5th year to get Burnett, Theo may have to swallow hard and do it. Especially if it not doing it means he goes to the Yankees.

  192. DPF November 19th, 2008 at 2:55 pm

Atleast not that he knows about..:)

Girardi has already said that he will be very active in recruiting. I don’t have that in print, but I remember him saying it, probably on Francesa’s show. So maybe find a different question?

But in any case, here’s hoping the foundation does well tonight.

  196. Fredo Corleone November 19th, 2008 at 2:57 pm

“If not, what would the incentive be for someone to be, in this case, Boras’s mouthpiece?”

  197. aron November 19th, 2008 at 2:57 pm

In winning the MVP award, Dustin Pedroia was named on 27 of the 28 American League MVP ballots. The one writer to leave Pedroia off? That was Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, a well-respected member of the Baseball Writers Association of America, the organization that votes on awards. Grant voted for Kevin Youkilis first, followed by the Angels’ Francisco Rodriguez and the Twins’ Justin Morneau. “I think the best way for me to sum it up is, in retrospect, obviously I was wrong,” Grant said by phone. “My colleagues all, and people I respect an awful lot, thought Dustin deserved to be in the top 5. I had him on my ballot in some scenarios as high as No. 1 late into September. When I looked at the numbers that to me mattered most, OPS and batting average with runners in scoring position, he just didn’t stack up with Youkilis at all. He was a laggard behind the others who had great years in the American League. Is it an error of omission that he’s left off my ballot entirely? You could say that.”

  198. Nick in SF November 19th, 2008 at 2:57 pm

The Giants turned down the Rios offer and it was never too deep to begin with.

SJ is correct but he has the details slightly mangled; it’s the Yankees who have suspended construction on their new dream house pending CC’s destination.

  199. sweet lou November 19th, 2008 at 2:58 pm

This is the one instance where I wish Boras was CC’s agent. Then there would be no drama at all– we would be locks to get him and wouldn’t have to overpay. All we would need to do is be the highest bidder period, even if its by 10 cents, and Boras would deliver him to us.

Sure, the process would have dragged out (and its going to this year as it is), but we knew at the end of the day, he would be ours as long as we’d be the highest bidder. Now, we could be the highest bidder by $30 million and still lose him.

  200. Bronx Jeers November 19th, 2008 at 2:58 pm

Pete Abraham has the best sources. US!!!

Seriously, I found out about the Nady/Marte trade while on this blog and it was still about an hour before I heard it anywhere else.

There were guys here who must have been watching the Pirate game and they knew Marte was hugging guys in the dugout. It was very cool.

  201. SJ44 November 19th, 2008 at 2:59 pm

The incentive is he gets information ahead of his competitors. Boras doesn’t need to pay Heyman.

All he does is use him. When he needs info out on his players (ie: “The Yankees have interest in Manny”), he has Heyman ready, able and willing to write it.

In exchange, Heyman gets good info from Boras on the happenings in the game. It helps him break stories (like Arod’s opt out last year for example) and that’s good for Heyman.

Also, when the world seems to relish in writing bad stories about Boras, Heyman is there to provide balance to the haters.

Nothing wrong with it really. Its what makes the info world go ’round.

You just need to take it in the context in which its written.

Everybody has an agenda. Just the way it goes.

“Dan Graziano says the Jays might be shopping Halladay around? That is about 4 more wins a season for us!”

I would love for us to get Halladay, but TOR would *never* trade him to us and we’ve have to give them too much to get him. Not sure I buy this story as I’m not sure how many players a team would have to send to TOR to get Halladay. We’re talking at least two top prospects.

  203. SJ44 November 19th, 2008 at 3:03 pm

No drama from Boras clients? Did you sleep through the Arod stuff last year?

Or, how about the Bernie stuff when he almost signed with the Red Sox?

Boras clients are ALL about the drama.

There hasn’t been any drama with CC as of yet.

All that has happened is, he hasn’t jumped at the first offer given to him. What’s the big deal about that?

If he was a Boras client, it would be Mid-December before he signed. Meaning, he would have put the entire Yankee Off-Season Plan on hold.

This may be done by Thanksgiving. At worst, by the Winter Meetings.

In other words, a normal timetable for a Non-Boras free agent.

  205. Chris NY November 19th, 2008 at 3:03 pm

“It’s not like some dude turning down 20$ per hour to make 17$ closer to home.”

You’re right, because $3 an hour to someone making $17 an hour is much more important than an extra 20M to someone making ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY MILLION DOLLARS. The guy would still be what, the second highest paid pitcher in baseball? It’s a ton of money to leave on the table, I agree. But 3.33 million a year to a guy making 20 million a year is not nearly as big as it sounds to you and I.

Personally, I would work for 3.33 million a year in a heartbeat. But if I made 20 million, you’re damn right I’d pass on an extra 3 if it meant I would be home with my family for half the season instead of gone for the whole season, or dragging them on the road with me.

  206. Paulie November 19th, 2008 at 3:04 pm

    SJ.

I’ve done some searching, but can’t find those sources re: the construction of CC’s house.

Can you please direct me in the right direction?

I’m not trying to say you’re wrong, but I know what I heard yesterday, so I’m trying to see if CC is a liar on national radio, or if you’re trying to make it sound as if he stopped construction on his 25000sq foot luxury mansion in California.
Paraphasing, CC said that no matter where he was playing, he still needed a place to live, so the house was coming along just fine.
It all came up because he supposedly hired the same guy who built Hugh Heffner’s grotto to do his pool.

So, sources would be helpful here.

    Thanks, buddy.

    Al,

Agree. It’s over… if the Dodgers are willing to give him $120, then he will go there. He wants to go there and that is more than enough money to set him up for life. I didn’t think McCourt had it in him to give $20 mil a year for 6 years… but now that he does, he’ll be a Dodger (unless the Giants jump in there).

This sucks. Time to move on to Teixeria/Manny/Burnett.

  209. John November 19th, 2008 at 3:09 pm

The smartest thing for Cashman and Hal to do at this point is assume that CC is not coming and move on. That means get serious about Burnett/Lowe and closely monitor Teixeria/Manny and also scan the trade market for ideas.

If CC shocks the world and decides to come here, then that would be great. We’ll find a spot for him, But don’t assume anything, prepare as if he isin’t coming.

    Al,

Probably sign Burnett and hope Joba can emerge as legit and Wang picks up where he left off. Also would be great if Mussina decides to return.

We’re clearly going to have to forget about having a dominant rotation and build a ferocious lineup instead with Tex/Manny. Hope that our lineup and strong bullpen will carry us. That strategy doomed us for years, but we don’t have a choice at this point. Pray that the 2010 FA class has some pitchers who want to come here. It wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if we get Tex/Manny/Burnett.

Its totally over. The only reason CC didn’t reject us out-right is because his agent told him to let it play out and wait for the Dodgers to come to the table. Now the Dodgers have showed up with 120 mil in hand I can’t imagine CC saying no thats what he wanted all along. Sadly we were only a ploy in this free agent game.

    tom,

Cashman doesn’t need to increase the offer until something concrete indicates to him that someone’s offer is actually competing with ours from a monetary standpoint.

Its all hearsay in the news right now about the Dodgers offer.

For Cashman to increase the Yankee offer, he’d only be outbidding his own team and that is mildly retarded.

  242. ariel November 19th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Have I missed something? From the comments on this board, it would appear CC has signed with the Dodgers already.

No. If you have to up the offer, you up the offer.

    The Yankees aren’t innocents here.

They have known all along to get the guy they would have to blow away the next best offer.

If they have to up the offer, they will up the offer.

Its not about having their feelings hurt or anything else.

Its pure, cutthroat business. They knew going into the off-season, it was going to take an offer north of 140 million if they had a chance at the guy.

You see it as only a 3.25 million dollar difference between the offers. I see it as, if they raise the offer 5-10 million dollars, its the roughly equal to about 7 10 year suite leases in the new stadium. Well within the Yankees budget.

Its all in how you look at it. lol

Seriously though, nothing has happened and folks are in a panic. That’s just funny to me.

    I feel your pain.

Its absurd some of teh stuff we’re reading on here right now. CC’s had the offer for what, 5 days? Good god people, cool your jets.

Move on? What is this, another Obama campaign? Puhlease! As SJ said, they’ll move on if he indicates that he doesn’t want to play for the Yankees which he has not done.

I just figured that such a uncommon even (to halt construction on multi-million dollar mansion in california), might actually have a credible source attached to it, or more than one or two heresay articles involved with it.
But, I guess I’ll just start believing all the stuff on read on team’s fanboards from now on.

When are we getting Kemp for Gardner again? A buddy of mine said that he heard Kemp talking in a bar in LA that he really wanted to play in NY, and that he would force his hand to be traded to NY – he learned how to do it from Manny.

  276. Knudsen November 19th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

Bottomline…CC will sign when he wants, with whom he wants, and, for how much he wants, based upon his own values and standards, whatever they might be.

I’m gone, but will be back around 12/15 when we may have sense of what will happen.

I can’t understand how I’m the worst kind of fan. Technically “the worst kind of fan” would be someone who roots against their team or roots for injuries etc. I just feel like the Yankees are getting played by CC and his agent to sap the most money out of LA as possible. Also I didn’t scream TORRE TORRE TORRE, however having a notable HOF manager at the helm is a lot more attractive than a guy with an abrasive attitude and 2 years of experience.

  292. West Coast Guy November 19th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

“meanwhile Al from BK has traded A-Rod to the Dodgers for Joe Torre”

Not so, my sources tell me A-Rod stays and the real deal is Girardi for Torre, with Torre bringing his buddy threesome of Bowa, Mattingly and Manny with him. What’s holding it up though, is Girardi’s request to bring Meacham with him.

  293. G. Love November 19th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

I don’t care what we pay CC or AJ if they come here. I don’t know why fans of this team would care what we pay them. It’s not going to restrict the team from doing anything in the future.

When the Yankees are frugal to the detriment of the team we lose opportunities to get guys like Johan (who they didn’t want to pay and give up prospects for) and we lose Beltran (who we didn’t want to pay).

These guys cost money and the market is huge for them and for the Yankees to back out because of dollars is just silly. I don’t know why fans even care about it.

Our starting rotation RIGHT NOW is Wang and Joba. We need 3 starting pitchers minimum. Who cares what we pay them. If Cashman is going to develop the farm, he’ll have 5 years of AJ and CC to protect that development.

As for CC not sprinting to JFK with pen in hand this week, how do you know he and the Yankees aren’t already talking about specific parameters he’d want in a deal to get him to come.

If CC ever came out and told the world he had no interest in the Yankees, his agents and wife would slap him.

It would cause the Angels and Dodgers to bid low on him knowing he’s limited his market.

I’m not worried about it until he makes a decision and any of you fretting over what kind of money and how many years he’s going to get are just being silly.

This team uses money to cover up mistakes. They always have. They can buy their way out of any bad situation and still keep the team competitive. That’s the team you root for and post about.

If you want a fiscally conservative team that wins once and awhile you should be Twins fans.

Stop worrying about contracts and money.

I’d rather start the season with CC and AJ in the rotation than any other 2 starting pitchers out there including Lowe.

If CC goes somewhere else and none of these top pitchers want to be Yankees, then we have a big problem because the farm isn’t exactly putting multiple versions of Joba.

If that happens, then it’s time to worry.

  298. Doreen November 19th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

    Paulie -

    I’m lurking. :)

I’m just trying to think. Torre was (ahem) let after last season.

I’m trying to think of what free agents the Yankees were going for last season, any at all, and specifically, any that didn’t choose the Yankees, leaving big money on the table to do so.

Trouble is, I’m having some difficulty thinking of any. Santana would have come here if the Twins accepted any of the Yankees’ offers. They signed Hawkins (not a big FA by any means), and few other lower tier free agents. But except for the Santana thing, I don’t recall that the Yankees were even in the free agent market last season.

So, so far, no free agent has left money on the table because the Yankees have lost their appeal since Torre left.

However, other teams have more money to spend than they used to, so players have more options open to them if they are seeking a big payday. And I am having a great deal of difficulty understanding why it is so difficult for some people to comprehend that not everyone wants to play here for reasons known only to said players and their families, or that it’s not so much they don’t want to play here, as it is they have a preference to play somewhere else.

Peavy isn’t a free agent, but would prefer not to be traded not just to the Yankees but to ANY AL team. I suspect it’s because of the learning curve involved. I can understand not wanting to have to learn an entire new league. I can also understand not really wanting to leave San Diego, but he can’t control that.

We’ve really got to stop painting all these situations with such board brushes, guys. :)

When I was a sportswriter, I was offered the Yankees beat. I turned it down.

The last thing I wanted to do was cover the team I’d rooted for since birth. I knew it

would turn me into an ex-fan, and it was more important to me root for the team that

filled my father’s childhood days, and the team I grew up loving more than any other,

than to write formula stories on deadline for editors who are happy for you to turn out

pablum, as long as it’s what everyone else is writing.

I think Gammons is obviously a nice man, and he’s got a kind of irrepressible humanity

about him that makes you like him, and he does seem to have a certain wonder and joy

about baseball that seems rare among journalists these days.

But he’s also a bit of an embarassment, because of his inability to hide his emotional

investment in the Red Sox. And isn’t he a bit out of touch, as well? To not get that

he’s not well-respected because of it?

Even though Francessa and Russo are idiots, they position themselves as the sort of fan

conscience, which would be a neat idea if they were more egalitarian with their callers,

which was supposed to sort of be the point, originally, and if they weren’t just so terrible.

But at least it’s understood that they root for certain teams.

Gammons tries to pass himself off as this sort of global professorial baseball guy who

should be taken seriously and who is objective, but I don’t think anybody buys that. You

can’t have it both ways, Pete. Why not just have a syndicated talk show from Boston on

baseball, that fully discloses what we all already know?

The odd thing about this CC situation is that there hasn’t even been a whisper about CC’s intentions. Also Genske said “Yeah, were just gonna shop this offer around” thats an odd way to respond to the largest contract ever offered to a hurler. Our only role in CC’s free agency has been to force LA to go to 120 now that they have why would CC sign here? He wants to be in LA and he wants a lot of money if LA does pony up 120 mil then he has both. Hopefully this ends soon so we can get to Tex/Burnett already.

we don’t need sabathia to win.

the phillies had one ace and a few ok pitchers and a great bullpen.

a smart, balanced team with debth, enough power,a great pen is needed.

the problem with the yankees is that they don’t have a true ace and outside of cc no ace is available without a trade.

they would be in a better position if joba was not on a strict pitch count.

i have a feeling that hughes is going to step it up in 09.his last few starts were solid and a scout said his newly learned cutter looked good.

I think Gammons is fine, as long as he’s not talking about Boston or New York, because yes, his view is skewed. He’s a fan, and I can’t blame him for that. They’re all fans in one way or another of someone, and their articles show it – if even well hidden.
Gammons does quite a good job while focusing on something other than New York of Boston.

Wow it’ll be nuts if Halladay is really on the block. He’s the only guy that makes Toronto competitive at all. If they are shopping him, we need to open everything to get him – the vault and the farm, top prospects – everything. It will be worth it. No single pitcher in the major league scares me more than Halladay – he just totally destroys every time we meet.

But no chance they trade him to a division rival LOL.

  314. G. Love November 19th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

I agree that Gammons has completely lost credibility.

I used to really look up to him and think he was the class of the industry but after his health issue, I think he decided he had to come out of the closet screaming and yelling about his favorite team.

Saying Delcarmen and Craig Hansen were the best middle relievers in baseball didn’t do much to help him last season.

Literally kicking and screaming and crying over the Yankees drafting Cole on live TV was a complete embarrassment.

I wonder how embarrassed he is now that the Yanks didn’t get him and he paraded himself on live TV like a 4 year old who had a lollipop snatched from his mouth.

If he were a Boston reporter still and was being published in only Boston it’d be one thing…but the guy is supposedly a national baseball man and his fan worship of all things Red Sox is just sad to see.

He’ll always have a legacy, but it’s taken some hits and he looks silly right now.

He’s basically turned himself in to the Rizzuto of the Red Sox except he never played for the Red Sox.

I’m waiting for him to start getting chowder delivered to him during his broadcasts during Red Sox/Yankees games and plugging the concession stand operator like when Rizzuto got his canoli and plugged the bakery.

He’s the Red Sox mascot dressed up in worn corduroy blazer with arm patches on it.

  315. Chris NY November 19th, 2008 at 4:33 pm

Doreen, from what I’ve read, at least this year, he can block any trade and is playing along for now, but if he doesn’t like where they want to trade him, he can block it. He gave the list of where he’d like to play, that’s who San Diego has engaged, as far as what I’ve read.

  316. bru November 19th, 2008 at 4:36 pm

  317. Glenn November 19th, 2008 at 4:38 pm

Boston and / or Gammons is kidding nobody. They don’t have the money coming off their books that they claim to have.
Most of the $$$ saved from Manny Ramirez will go to the arbitration eligible Pedroia and Youkilis who will both have sweet paydays coming as will Papelbon and if a rumored deal of Lugo to the Tigers for Willis & Robertson holds up, it’s a salary wash.
As baseball analysts go, I’d trust Tim Kirkjian or Buster Olney over Gammons 8 days out of 7.

I don’t have a clue where CC ends up. Guessing due to coin I would say here.
I live here in St pete fl and I have been to Ny the city often enough to know I could play for the Yankees however I Would be comuting hundreds of miles daily.
Being born and raised here, Frankly the City scares the bejesus out of me. Too many people, to much bright light, way to much concrete. It gets to cold in April and October and sometimes to hot in the summer. There are a million reasons I could not live in NY and none of them have a thing to do with the Yankees. The Yankees I love.
For me reluctance to play for the Yanks likely mostly would have nothing to do with the org but all the other variables would be terribly disconcerting for me anyway.
However I feel basically the same way about Cali. For me there is not much to like there either. Parts are gorgeous but then gorgeous only goes so far.
CC will take the money and learn to like Ny which incidentally maybe I could learn to do with 140 mil financing it. I’m sure I could find someway to cope. Not sure I could find someone to finally turn the darn lights off and quiet things down regardless of the money. lol.
