Package Veras and Ramirez together and the return you could get back might become interesting.

Do you think Milwaukee would be interested in adding Ramirez and Veras to a good young minor league pitcher (Wright or Kroenke) and Russo for Hart and a minor league infielder?

i'd take andrew jones and pay the full 18 million for him if the dodgers sen't me one of kershaw, kemp, loney & i would send them a few players.

we take kemp, jones and send them kennedy & matsui.dh jones & if he stinks, bench him, swish at fb,nady in right, kemp in cf.

i would rather sign tex though & still do the above deal.

now you have tex at first base and kemp in cf.we take on a lot of payroll but only for a year.

nady, jones, damon, matsui off the books in one year or we can trade a few of them to restock the farm system.

"I wonder whether including Schafer (sp?) in the deal along with Escobar and Morton doesn’t get it done."

Good point. The Braves had pulled Schafer out of that deal as well and made him untouchable.

That makes a lot of sense. Not sure how adamant the Pads are about getting pitching back - I guess they'll have to be flexible on Hanson. If I were the Braves I wouldn't trade him.

They could put Schafer into the deal and pull Gorkys Hernandez (who I get the sense is another one of those brave prospects who turns out to all athletic potential...) and then add a couple of the lower end pitching prospects.

Escobar and Schafer and two other players - that starts to look pretty fair for Peavy.

The deal the braves had been offering was ridiculous. Wren was really assuming Towers was waiting to be robbed.

Wiggy and Catalanotto are two of my favorite role players in all of baseball. They can play multiple positions, are more than adequate offensively and defensively and by all reports are good "team" guys. Adding either one would be great and not only for the bench. Matsui, Posada, Damon all need time off maybe once a week. I could see Wiggy starting almost half the time.

Gotta get over the infatuation with DeJesus. I think Gardner will be better over the next four years. He's just an ordinary kind of guy.

I too would love to see some decisions made. No question Sabathia is waiting to see how other teams respond to the Yanks offer, why wouldn't he? Once he makes his decision I think things will move pretty quickly on AJ, Mussina and Pettite.

I actually think Andruw Jones might be trying to have a career-saving situation and if so he could be a fine player in 2009. Problem is he makes $ 18 M this year. They'd have to incluide Kershaw, Loney, Etheir or Kemp to get me interested in taking that risk even if it is just $$$.

are the yankees worried that if they go after tex the angels will go after cc?

tex just makes so much sense for the yankees.you get a great defense,a high obp, protection for arod.

the problem if we get tex is what do we do with swisher.trade nady and or swisher, matsui, damon?

how about signing tex, trade one or two of nady, swisher, matsui with a prospect or two for a cf.

one of nady/swisher in rf & one of nady/swisher.matsui for dh depending on who stays.

can you imagine a lineup of

damon
jeter
tex
arod
matsui/dh
posada
swisher/rf
cano
whoever the cf is

with a rotation of

sabathia
wang
burnett
lowe/mussina/pettitte/peavey
joba

with a ton of debth ready and or near ready?

"I thought he was clearly the best non-Soria arm of the lot. Only issue with Ramirez is walks. A little too many. "

Fredo,

We've had this conversation a couple of times - about the potential trade value of some of the yankees middle relievers.

I think the Ramirez-Crisp deal is a pretty good example of the kind of deal that I've been referring to in the past.

This deal also shows that if the Yankees put Veras out on the market they'd likely get a useful piece back.

Veras and Ramirez are similar and if you wanted to pick one over the other so be it. Veras does have much better stuff - but he's also less consistent. Those guys are kind of wash (though Veras does have more upside...)

If the Royals could get an above average everyday player for Ramirez the yankees should be able to get something analagous back for Veras and to a lesser degree Ramirez.

The CF market is very slim this off season. And the Royals were still able to get back a CF.

The Yankees (not we), could send them Melky OR Gardner and some relief pitching. They need pitching, and Melky OR Gardner are cheap. Just a thought.

"I can’t imagine the Braves will ever agree to putting Heyward in the deal. Will they include Hanson?"

I wonder whether including Schafer (sp?) in the deal along with Escobar and Morton doesn't get it done. I know Schafer had the PED issue last year, but he's still pretty highly thought of and had a nice season upon returning in AA ball.

being in business in these historically difficult times suddenly made trying to understand the financial system more critical than trying to convince nick from sf that livan hernadez was a valuable pitcher( not that that wasn't entertaining because it was).

i don't know what to think of lowe or burnett because each comes with upside and downside. lowe fits in as a reliable pitcher who provides innings and is playoff tested, but he has a lot of mileage on him.burnett has nasty stuff, but the injury potential is risky. i'm not sure how much he has upstairs and in new york intelligence helps. randy johnson's demeanor didn't fit in well in new york. i'm not sure burnett would adapt well to the new york glare which wouldn't faze lowe with his boston experience.

i wonder how much money teams really have right now. 2008 was fine, but things have changed since the season ended.income in 2009 may be very different . as in other businesses, isn't this a time to be cash rich? wouldn't it be better for the yankee to be very careful about spending money until they see how the financial crisis affects major league baseball?
