If you get the YES Network, Brian Cashman will be on their Yankees Hot Stove show at 6:30 p.m (ET). He’ll be revealing all of his plans for the winter and then will bust a few rhymes with special guest Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em.
Or something like that.
That could be it for the blogging today. If you’re just getting on line, please check out the assorted posts from today. If you’re on Facebook, join the LoHud Yankees Blog group and yell your friends about us.
UPDATE, 6:41 p.m.: It’s amusing to see Bob Lorenz and his guests ask Cash specific questions and Cash answer them without actually answering them. In shocking news, the Yankees are open minded to improving.

can’t wait for the show, and see Cashman’s plans.
why not put a ‘LoHud Yankees Blog group – facebook’ link over to the right with the other stuff? just a thought.
Cashman might as well go on and tell us what his Thanksgiving plans are. Or perhaps read us a chinese menu.
I swear that guy is the grand master of the whole Yankee Cone of Silence.
I’m not gonna bother watching. It will be more of the same “We have shown some love for some players now were waiting for some love back”. No point in watching this its gonna be alot of posturing from Cash and Verducci just telling us what we already know.
I’ll be watching. Hope Cshman actually says something interesting. He never gives up very much information.
**He never gives up very much information.**
that’s how the Swisher deal was made. lol
Can some kind viewer give us a recap afterwards?
Thanks.
According to Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune, the White Sox reached an agreement with 19 year-old Cuban third baseman Dayan Viciedo on a big league deal worth about $11MM. Alexei Ramirez and Jose Contreras should help Viciedo get comfortable when he joins the big league team.

1 word: damn
It would be great if Cash went on and announced CC signing
Al,
or some unexpected trade.
lol
“Al,
or some unexpected trade.
lol”
“We have moved Ian Kennedy to the Royals for outfielder David Dejesus. We envision him as our centerfielder.”- Cash
Cashman is the master of saying nothing, but doing it in 200 words.
just curious, you could actually trade a prospect for a prospect?
the Phillies just traded Greg Golson to the Rangers for another prospect. wow!
Cashman always looks like he needs a nap.
First question was about Mussina and what it means for Pettitte -
Basically said it means nothing, they are going to play in the FA market
“Cashman is the master of saying nothing, but doing it in 200 words.”
repeating the same words 200 times. lol
Cashman looks like he wants to be anywhere else except at this interview lol
Ed, It could be a 40 man roster trade. Maybe one of those players was going to be left off.
Cashman -
“Word on the street is NY is on CC’s list, just not high on the list. He does want to come here but prefers to go West. I don’t get the idea he doesn’t want to come here. Still have to go through the process. Will make sure to educate him, specifically on the surrounding area as a great place to live and show him the stadium. Wants to educate him about the NY scene”
Tom, I thought Golson would at least be the Phillies 4th OFer in 2009 since they released So Tagauchi.
Regarding Tex -
“Open minded to anything, pitching is priority but will look at everything. Takes two to tango, if we have to change our course we will, we might need to. Swisher can play above average in the corners. Right now Swisher is the 1st but he is very flexible and we are keeping options open”
Burnett/Lowe -
Was asked if he sees Burnett as a guy with electric stuff or oft injured.
“Sees him as both. Electric stuff but does not have the consistancy as a guy like Lowe, who obviously does not have the stuff of Burnett but has the durability/consistency. Have a list of priorities on what they look for. Depends on contract demands.”
It means nothing?
You would think it would mean something. Like “Yeah we’re going to reach out to him shortly”
Not for nothing but doesn’t the complete lack of staqrters reek of desperation? Is there another team that has a bigger need for starters than the Yanks at this point?
Anyone else find it interesting that the name Andy Pettitte was not mentioned once during the interview with Cashman on Hot Stove? Not sure how to interpret it, but it couldn’t have been an oversight not worth talking about, so its one of two things:
1 – they are working on a deal now so Cashman asked not to be asked about Andy or
2 – they aren’t going to bring him back and don’t want to formally say it prior to saying it to Andy first.
Ed, It seems that the Phillies like Mayberry’s power potential. If they lose Pat the Bat he could step in..
Typical Cash interview. Obviously this CC thing is gonna take some time. According to a friend of CC’s “CC is comfortable right now” with 140 million sitting in front of him I think most people would.
Reading between the lines of that interview, I get the feeling he is very interested in Teixeria. Hinted twice that we may need to change our course mid-way which basically is codeword for if we miss out on CC, we’ll go after Tex.
Sounded fairly confident about their shot at CC. Said that he needs to show him around the suburbs and the new stadium. Didn’t really sound that discouraged, as I thought he would and didn’t give a generic answer.
I hate to say it folks, but the more I think about it, the less likely it is that CC will wind up in NY.
He is adamant about staying in Cali. That means that were the Giants, Dodgers, or Angels to offer him a contract somewhere in the neighborhood of, say, $120-130 million over 6 years, he’d be leaving somewhere between $20-30 on the table to be where he *wants* to be.
The thing is, I am okay with this so long as it doesn’t lead to us overpaying for AJ Burnett or Derek Blowe.
Now, for the record, I’m not saying anything about CC not liking New York, not wanting to pitch in New York, etc. I am merely saying he would prefer to pitch closer to home. You can’t begrudge a guy that desire, right?
CC ain’t the be all end all for the Yankees. He may come on board, but if he does, its going to be a much larger contract than $140 million over six years.
We’ll see. I’m ok either way.
Thoughts?
Happy holidays, Peter!
“According to a friend of CC’s “CC is comfortable right now†with 140 million sitting in front of him I think most people would.”
Right now, I’d be most comfortable with it under my mattress.
Jake, you are not offbase at all.
I agree with you. If we stand pat right now, CC will go West. We must increase our offer to have a chance.
$140 is too little distance between the alleged offers from LAD/SF of the $120 area. We need to overwhelm him. $20 million is chump change.
Has anyone ever heard the words “I want to play on the west coast” come out of Sabathia’s mouth? Until I do, I will continue to believe that the concept of him wanting to play elsewhere is nothing more than a ploy to get the most $ possible out of the Yankees.
Thanks for the transcription, guys!
“He is adamant about staying in Cali. ”
No, he’s not… he has never said, himself, that he only wants to play in Cali. This whole thing is a perfect storm of: slow mlb news, desparate fans, constant chatter in the blogosphere, and the over-hyping media. I have no idea where he’ll end up, but I do know that this is business, and the media is nothing more than a pawn to these guys.
Jake- This is all contingent upon where other players go. If the Dodger sign Manny(which they are insistent upon) they will not turn around and give CC a big deal. The Angels are very committed to signing Tex, they did after all trade Kotchman for him thats a heck of a player to give up for a 2 month rental. The Giants are said to be interested however they are not an attractive team they have no offense and no bullpen, they also wont offer very much they have said they will not approach the Zito deal which means they offer 120 tops. I think we have a real shot we are obviously not his first choice but I think he can be convinced if the Yankees give an effort.
arliss,
And that is totally fair. We’ve only heard it through hearsay, more or less, that is the words of columnists.
And he may be secretly money-hungry.
Your opinion is obviously valid and I am sure a lot of people on here agree. But I believe his peak years are going to be spent in LA or SF.
Let me ask this: is he worth $160 million over six years even to the Ace-less Yankees (though I think Wang is legit, he isn’t shut down nasty like a Beckett, Halladay, or Santana).
No CC, fine.
Trades are how the Yankees will prosper. Teams will be shedding payroll and making highly paid pitchers available for prospects.
Everything has changed, baseball will change as well
“We must increase our offer to have a chance.
$140 is too little distance between the alleged offers from LAD/SF of the $120 area. We need to overwhelm him. $20 million is chump change.”
Just curious, how are you at monopoly? My guess is: not very good. This isn’t warfare where you can use shock and awe your way to get somebody to work for you – it’s an unsuccessful strategy that no sensible businessman will ever pursue.
you don’t increase your offer till there’s another offer. You don’t bid against yourself.
I’ve come in off the ledge with the CC situation.
He’s obviously not going to accept the 1st offer he gets. That would be like Kramer jumping at the Starbucks offer.
Right now he’s waiting on the WC offers and then he’ll probably see if Cash and co sweeten their offer and they probably will. Then he’ll decide if he thinks that playing in Cali is worth losing whatever the difference is and that’s it.
I would guess he takes the money.
If not, I guess they go all in on AJ and/or Lowe and/or make a trade.
What I don’t get is waiting on Andy. Maybe thay have a plan with him but don’t want to reveal it. But why?
“I agree with you. If we stand pat right now, CC will go West. We must increase our offer to have a chance.

This is all hear-say. Can we at least wait for another team to put an offer out first before we add onto our offer? The LA rumors were denied in all the LA papers saying the teams were busy with other players at the moment. SF is a long shot since they are gun-shy of approaching Zito deal numbers right now. Also would CC take 30-40 million less to go to a last place team with no offense or bullpen?
Al,
I totally agree. We definitely have a real shot. Any time you throw the highest salary ever on to the table you have a real shot.
As far as SF goes, offense or not, that wouldn’t play a factor. The guy grew up a Giants fan…a BIG giants fan. Loves the Raiders too. Its my opinion, but I truly believe if the Giants threw $120 million at him he’d go to SF, even if the Yankees are offering $160.
Maybe I’m just trying to pad the blow for myself because although I don’t REALLY care in the long run, it would be nice to have CC on the team for a number for reasons. He’d certainly alleviate a lot of my concerns about the team.
So what if CC does want to go west? There’s nothing wrong with that. If the pull is that strong you can’t do anything about it. And no, throwing obscene amounts of money on the table is not going to do it.
The Yankees have done their due diligence with a nice opening offer. If they sense CC’s heart’s not in NY, they’ll move on. If there’s mutual interest they’ll move forward to the next step.
Phil,
That is an imperative point to remember. Seriously.
We CANNOT up our offer until we KNOW that CC has something legit on the table that competes with our offer, which will be location competition, cuz we all know that no one can compete with the Yankee $$$.
Cash is so pale he looks like he just crawled out of a coffin………….he & Jeff Van Gundy both look 20 years older than they really are…..
The West Coast teams obviously know something we don’t if they are actually bidding BELOW us. They must have heard from CC directly or his agent that he would take a discount to play in Cali.
Why else would their bids (allegedly according to Graziano and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) be $20 million below ours? If you did that to any other agent or player, they would laugh and tell you not to come back until you have a serious offer that is higher than the current bid. CC’s agent is obviously accepting significantly lower bids for a reason. If we offer Burnett 4/$62 and the the Red Sox offer 4/$48… Burrnett’s agent wouldn’t even accept that bid.
Al,
Certainly you realize that adding CC to the Giants gives them two recent Cy Young Award winners in CC and Timmy. Then you have Cain. That’s three relatively nasty starters, all of whom can be considered an Ace…Cain may be more of a #2.
I’d agree that offense is more of an issue, but if you can snag CC for $120 and six and have the $$ to do it (I don’t know that they do, but hypothetically say they do), you might find constructive ways to add a bat via trade…Jonathan Sanchez, for instance.
mel,
The words of wisdom.
There is life (and glory) beyond CC.
Either way, it won’t spoil my Christmas
Doctors today announced a causal link between the monotone of Brian Cashman’s voice and sudden narcoleptic-like response on those who listen.
Damon on YES just said Burnett would be the top pitcher he would recruit and he started working on him during the season to come to NY. Also said he’d be happy to help in recruiting him now and with him the Yankees can win a WS.
Damon sounds more excited about Burnett than CC.
pat,
For real? Where’d you read/hear that?
I’m down with Burnett, but 5 years and $70 million is a risky endeavor with that injury history.
Jake – don’t think we are of a much different mind here, but I do believe this is largely a media/agent ploy and unlike you, I believe he won’t ultimately spend his best years out there. I also don’t agree that he is not on the level of the pitchers you mentioned. He is 28, gives huge innings, can dominate when on, and is often on. I do not put him on a level beneath the players you mention, all 3 of which he beat out for an AL Cy Young in 2007.
Put it in perspective. The Giants play in the weak NL west. Theirs is the path of least resistance.
I,m no accountant but what are the taxes for a guy who makes 20+mil a year. They gotta be astronomical.
If CC gets a 120mil deal, how much do you think he sees in his pocket after taxes and agent fees etc?
Point is…. 20 mil is a lot of dough. For anyone.
I give a 3% chance CC goes to the Giants. I don’t see them adding another 100+ million dollar pitcher after the Zito debacle. Also their offense is paltry they would wind up losing 90 1 run games. I dunno I think CC is a smart man, would he rather have Derek Jeter and A-Rod scoring runs for him and Mariano Rivera closing his games or Bengie Molina batting cleanup and Brian Wilson closing?
“If CC gets a 120mil deal, how much do you think he sees in his pocket after taxes and agent fees etc?”
After taxes CC would bring home well under 100 mil. Poor CC
Let’s not forget all the endorsements available to NY athletes…….
I watched that show in it’s first season and will never watch it again. It’s a joke. You can find out as much and perhaps more on the Internet compared to that show.
Watching Cashman it just confirmed for me how much goes on that we have no idea about. His story about striking out on 8 free agent pitchers before finally getting Jimmy Key was eye-opening to me.
Also, while Cash didn’t give a lot of specifics, it sounded like the Yankees are pretty much open to anything/everything out there.
Another thing of note was during the Johnny Damon segment when Kim Jones was asking him about CC, AJ and Lowe. I don’t know if anyone else felt this way, but it seemed it was coolest on CC, saying he was a workhorse, but much more. He gave the impression that he was more impressed with AJ and, of course, he played with Lowe and knows him and gave him a big thumbs-up. For what it’s worth, you know?
On another topic, I can’t wait until I have some time to listen to Pete’s sound file of Mussina’s phone conference. The little bit that was on Hot Stove was good.
Great show – gotta love Brian Cashman. Derek Jeter is also a master at not being mis-quoted. Good, I am glad.
Jake
Kim Jones interviewed him on the Yankee Hot Stove Show and asked him th him on the available free agent pitchers.
Damon’s responses:
CC- He’s a work horse. He’ll give you 200+ innings.
Lowe- He’s great. He’s never afraid and will always take the ball.
Burnett- He’s a guy you win a WS with.
if cc makes up up our offer when no team beats it or comes close i would walk away and not sign him.
it would be a pleasant suprise.
these huge contracts never work.
we offered him the biggest contract in the history of baseball for a pitcher and he isn’t as good as santanna and we are in serious economic trouble.
i don’t know what the answer would be if we don’t land him but if he wan’t us to beat our own offer i tell him to take a hike.
let him go to cali where in a few years he will stink and be getting paid 20-25 million a year.
arod was another terrible signing.
the yankees better wisen up or they are going to be financially strapped.
posada another bad contract.3 years tops or bye bye.
we should sign pettitte, look at burnett for 4 yrs with incentives, look at lowe, perez.
if that doesn’t work trade hughes, cano, kennedy and others for 2 good young pitchers and call it a day.
the yankees get played by everybody and it has to stop.
i would give players a little more for playing in ny but not a lot more.
look at the red sox.they stick to their guns and it works for them.
this is why drafting and player developement is so important.
they were smart with the cano, wang contracts but stupid with arod, posada and i hope they don’t pay jeter 20 million a year when he will be 36 1/2 yrs old.
trade hughes, kennedy and keep our pitching prospects.
Hmm, doesn’t sound like Cashman is that high on Burnett. That’s good! No way I give him a long term contract. 5 yrs to AJ Burnett? Please! I wouldn’t touch him with a 10 foot pole. The same stuff we’re hearing about Burnett is the same things we heard about Pavano when he was a FA. ‘oh he has good stuff’ ‘his only issues are health’. So why exactly you want to sign him again?
They all have a prospect in common, though. Here are some of the most common trading mistakes listed in a prospect, and how to avoid them. As there is particularly Silence on the most frequently traded currencies, you should try and opt for these, as they turn out to be cheaper, rather than go for the less popular ones.
