    great minds…

  5. Braintrust November 20th, 2008 at 7:24 pm

Congrats Brett. If you are our starting center fielder out of Spring training, we’re in for a long season.

  6. jennifer November 20th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

    Congrats Brett!

  7. Gehrig November 20th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Gardner will be a bigger part of the Yankees future than most people think

  8. mel November 20th, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Congratulations! At least we know the little one can’t outrun his daddy.

Hunter? He would’ve gotten along really well with Stone. Anyone else miss Farnsy?

  9. mel November 20th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

    Braintrust,

Good one! It will be a long season with Gardner. Thank goodness, too. As we saw with the Rays and Phillies, speed kills in the postseason. Would love to see Gardner wreak havoc.

  10. dave November 20th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Im surprised they are letting JB Cox be available for the rule five. I guess he isnt really ready for the majors and its tough to keep a bullpen arm on the roster all season but he is one of the more highly regarded relievers likely to make an impact on the major league club soon. Whelan was a bit of a surpise as well. I would think the yanks would be more interested in protecting those two arms and sending out guys like duncan and Ransom. But I guess the issue is that those two arent major league ready while duncan and ransom are and util infielder/first base DH would be more likely to stay on a roster than relievers. I really hope we dont lose cox or whelan though.

Does Cash ever say anything important or even relevant during the off season when asked questions? I dont even listen to what he says anymore because its either a blatant lie or he walks right around the question basically say nothing at all. Yea, the yanks want to get better, gardner is currently the starting centerfielder and CC, AJ and Lowe are good pitchers and good people. I could not say any less than he does in an off season interview if i tried. BORING – Id rather read constant, pointless and sometimes almost stupid rumors from blogs and media articles than listen to GMs speak any day of the week.

  11. Al from BK( Its time to start weighing our options beyond CC.) November 20th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Gardner could steal 60 bases if he played everyday and actually learned how to hit.

  12. Bronx Jeers November 20th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

    Hunter huh?

    Maybe Brett’s into psychadelics.

Al, That’s like 17% taxes. Even I pay more than that. I would think he’d be lucky to see 75 mil out of that 120. Even that may be conservative.

  13. dan 771 November 20th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Gardner is going to be a force for us next year

he put up excellent numbers in late august/september. he is a spark, a single is as good as a double, he plays GG defense, he is a grinder

    he is a winning player

  14. Weather Man November 20th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

I agree with what Michael Kay said yesterday on his show… don’t evaluate Gardner on stats, watch him play. And when we watch him play, we see a guy who looks like he is swinging a wet newspaper. The bat comes out of his hand every AB and he can’t get the ball out of the infield.

Fine 4th OF, but get me DeJesus.

  15. dave November 20th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Congrats to Gardner and i hope moose gets into the hall – he does deserve it even though his stats may be borderline. I cannot buy the idea that moose knew since january that this was his last season. One, why did he file for free agency if he knew he wasnt going to be a free agent? Two, why did it take him weeks to let anyone know? Even with the world series and the awards, there were days where nothing else was going on and he wouldnt have overshadowed anything. Three, why in all the interviews this season did he say he was debating it? Maybe, two of those questions could have reasonable explanations but in the end, i think he was debating it until a couple of days ago or maybe a couple of weeks ago – not since january. it doesnt make much sense to string us along and the organization for this long. But i wish him the best of luck in retirement. I hope he fixes many cars and does many cross word puzzles.

  16. ZMAN7777 November 20th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

God this is exciting news! The economy may be collapsing around us, but we need to know when a marginal outfielder’s wife bears a child.

  17. Buddy Biancalana November 20th, 2008 at 7:45 pm

    ZMANN-

This is a Yankee blog last I heard.

  18. ZMAN7777 November 20th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

You could be right, Buddy, but the news isn’t exactly pertinent to Yankee baseball. Unless, of course, having a kid turns Gardner into a productive hitter.

  19. dave November 20th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

MLBtraderumors say the yanks are planning to offer both burnett and lowe 4 yrs and 60 million range. But Burnett wants at least five and Lowe wants 16 million per and possibly five. Im sorry but neither pitch is worth five years – Burnett is too injury prone for a five plus yr contract and Lowe isnt going to be good enough for 16 million per and is too old to sign for five years. Let the sox take him back. I would def go after tex and CC at this point. We are talking about a possible difference of five to ten million next yr for signing CC and Tex over CC and Burnett/ Lowe. The fact that CC and Tex are both superstars, the best free agents on the market and young leads me to the conclusion that signing those two would be much more worth the money. It seems the angels may start the bidding on tex with a miguel cabrera like 8 yrs and 150 million – thats almost 20 per year. The yanks should offer 8 yrs and 175 million and either sign tex or drive the price waaay up for the angels – really, its a win win.

  20. Buddy Biancalana November 20th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

He was productive during his 2nd callup.

  21. mel November 20th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

Definitely, the butterfly effect going on here.

Brett’s wife has a son->Brett’s a happy man->Brett hits well in winterball-> Brett has a great spring-> Brett starts in CF -> Brett goes 2-for-4, 2 stolen bases, 3 RBI-> the Yankee masses swell with benevolence->the DOW peaks because of the boxscore->hope takes over Wall Street->economy recovers->all is good in the world.

  22. Al from BK( Its time to start weighing our options beyond CC.) November 20th, 2008 at 7:58 pm

“Fine 4th OF, but get me DeJesus.”

I agree Cash needs to be on the horn with Moore. They now have like 6 OF’s with the addition of Coco Crisp. Now is the time to nab Dejesus try to dangle IPK and see if they are still high on him if not throw in a lower level pitching chip as well.

  23. dave November 20th, 2008 at 8:00 pm

Gardner WOULD be an excellent player if he hit. The thing is – with a full season, he wont hit. He constantly looks overmatched against decent pitching. He doesnt draw enough walks even in the minors. He has speed and defense but you need some offense out of a centerfielder especially when two of our best offensive players leave a lineup that was disturbingly bad last yr.

And i know posada may be healthy all season, cano may have a comeback all star yr, matsui could play a whole season without getting injured and arod could have another mvp-like season like he seems to have every other yr but none of these are guarantees. And swisher will put up at best league avg numbers at first. Damon could significantly decline from last yrs production as well.

Point is, the best offensive positions in baseball cannot be the weakest on the yanks anymore. We dont have the guaranteed offensive threats in weak positions that make gardner’s presence ignorable. Look at last yrs games – this kid is never going to be a good hitter. He is a fantastic fourth outfielder, late innings defensive replacement and pinch runner but lets not make him into something he is not. If we learned one thing from melky, its that just because a player shows a little promise doesnt guarantee that he can play in the MLB and get a little better each season. There is no way Gardner is going to be a regular fixture in centerfield next season. Just no way – esp considering who we lost this off season and how poorly offensively we were last season.

  24. S.A.- CC Watch 2008: Making some Yankee fans go bonkers November 20th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

Congrats to Brett and Jessica Gardner. :)

  25. dave November 20th, 2008 at 8:05 pm

I read the yanks have interest in orlando hudson. Any truth to that does any one know or is this just something spread by the agent? I cant imagine they would trade cano with his value down and Long in the carribean re-teaching him how to hit. What would the yanks do with cano if we somehow acquired hudson? This rumor doesnt make a whole lot of sense unless the yanks are thinking about possibly dealing cano.

  26. dave November 20th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

dempster’s four yrs and 52 million could really end up hurting us – how does a pitcher after one great season deserve that kind of contract? Before last season, he was a mediocre to pretty bad relief pitcher in the national league. Horrible contract for the cubs and for any team looking to sign a pitcher that is better than dempster which is pretty much every starter on the market that the yanks have interest in. Good job Chicago, way to make AJ and Lowe feel like they deserve even more than the ridiculous contracts they will be offered.

  27. SJ44 November 20th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

The Royals have already said they aren’t trading DeJesus. He’s their LF next year.

He’s also an awful CF. That’s why they got Crisp and are moving DeJesus to LF fulltime.

They will trade Teahan and, if they can, Guillen.

    DeJesus isn’t on the market.

  28. pat November 20th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

    mel

Butterfly effect huh. No pressure. Does Brett also have a unitard and tights under his uniform with a big “S” on the front of it so he can save the free world in his spare time?

  29. Joe from Long Island November 20th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

    Congrats to Brett and family.

  30. Joe from Long Island November 20th, 2008 at 8:21 pm

If SJ’s right about KC and DeJesus, that’s disappointing. I had been thinking that we had a match with them, and their need for (relief) pitching. I’ve not been terribly impressed over the years by Mark Teahen, and Joey Gathright doesn’t seem impressive, either.

  31. jennifer November 20th, 2008 at 8:21 pm

Listening to Mike on Mike’s show. Offered Mike to have Mike go on his show when ever he wanted. Mike sounded interested. Thought he might do things from the LLWS.

  32. Harry November 20th, 2008 at 8:21 pm

maybe the kid can get an obp of higher than 280

  33. Tom November 20th, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Pitchers get crazy contracts. Look at the contracts Carlos Silva and Vicente Padilla. The Yankees shelled out over 40 million for Igawa and the Red Sox shelled out over 100 million for Dice K before they even threw a pitch in the bigs. League average pitiching is at a premium right now. Better than average arms are worth 12-16 million per righ now.

  34. Tom November 20th, 2008 at 8:26 pm

jennifer, that post confused me immensely. Maybe Mike can go on Mike and Mike and share a mike with Mike and make fun of Mike.

  35. Drive 4-5 November 20th, 2008 at 8:29 pm

Tonight Hal said the Yanks have placed a deadline on the CC offer, although he didnt specifically say what it was.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=3716104

My guess is that if there’s no movement by Dec 1 they will begin to switch gears. Cashman somewhat alluded to the Yanks being willing to change priorities on the Hot Stove show on YES tonight.

I’m in the minority here because I’m not comfortable giving any pitcher a 6 year deal. It wouldnt bother me if their focus became Teixeira.

  36. SJ44 November 20th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Mark Teixiera is at the GT-Miami game. He said he will whittle down his list “within 2 weeks” and have a decision no later than Christmas.

  37. Ed - patience isn't a virtue to some people November 20th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

good for Hal, setting the bar straight. he’s not going to be patient all the time.

  38. Doreen November 20th, 2008 at 8:37 pm

Congratulations to Brett & Jessica, and welcome to Hunter. All the best to them. First child – exciting times!

    ZMAN7777-

I like hearing about the personal stuff. It’s adds to the enjoyment of the team for me. But, hey, we’re all different.

  39. Drive 4-5 November 20th, 2008 at 8:37 pm

How tall is Texeira? I may have to tell the wife we’re getting a bigger tree. Of course if we do end up with CC, we’ll realllly need a bigher tree :)

  40. Ed - patience isn't a virtue to some people November 20th, 2008 at 8:39 pm

“Mark Teixiera is at the GT-Miami game. He said he will whittle down his list “within 2 weeks” and have a decision no later than Christmas.”

..and he’s promoting his 10 year deal.

  41. jennifer November 20th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

tom  sorry. I reread it realized that so many Mike’s were thrown around that it was confusing.

    I’ll try again.

Mike Mussina, went on Mike F’s show. Mike F offered him a chance to broadcast some shows with him. Mike M sounded like he liked it. Said well the LLWS is 15 minutes from my house, maybe I’ll do something from there.

    Better?

  42. blson November 20th, 2008 at 9:05 pm

does anyone know what Joel Sherman said during the conference call to Mussina?

“Thanks for making all the writers ________ ?”

  43. jennifer November 20th, 2008 at 9:16 pm

blson I couldn’t figure that out either.

  44. Doc Iac November 20th, 2008 at 11:10 pm

    so what? he sucks

  45. KennyH123 November 21st, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Gardner has a very small sample size in the big leagues, and idiots are already writing him off. Big mistake.

He’s hit everywhere he’s been. He’ll hit.. and get on base consistently.. in the major leagues too.

He’s the fastest man in baseball, a human highlight film in CF, catching balls Melky would not get within 20 yards of, let alone catch. He’ll steal 75 bases EASILY with 500 ABs and score upwards of 120 runs. He makes the pitchers scared to death every time he’s on base and the guys hitting right after him will get fastball after fastball.

He’s also hustles all the time, his uniform is filthy by the 5th inning of every game, and he brings energy and competitiveness to every game.

But yeah, lets write him off based on his first 50 ABs. Good idea, morons.

  46. Max Fischer November 24th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

“Hunter Gardner”? Was “Hunter Gatherer” taken?
