Mike Mussina opened his call by saying he knew from last January that the 2008 season would be his last and he never changed his mind.

sure he did ;) he just dragged it all out because he wanted the attention.

    disco? ballroom? what?

You know what – what a breath of fresh air! No final tours, no last goodbyes, no melancholy, no hype, no fuss, no muss. Just go out, do your job, enjoy your season, have fun.

Again, I simply wish Mussina the best in whatever he plans to do in his retirement, and I thank him for always giving his best effort for the Yankees. It’s gratifying to me as an admirer and fan of Mussina’s work that he was as he seemed to me, even to the end.

If it was a done deal, why the long winded interviews with the press after games where he said he didn’t have his mind made up yet?

Mike Mussina and Greg Maddux are the two best pitchers of our generation – assuming Moose was always clean

  6. al arodien November 20th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

how much will be the over/under that the moose will come back from retirement?! (like clemens Farve etc.)

  7. Doreen November 20th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

    Patrick Bateman -

If I were to guess, I would guess he did it that way so the whole season wouldn’t be about “Mussina’s last” this or that, all about the retirement instead of the here-and-now. My guess.

Saying he never changed his mind doesn’t mean he didn’t consider coming back, just mean he didn’t change his mind. he could have been thinking about it at least a little. Besides which, as has been written, he apparently wanted to wait till after the WS and awards so as not to take any attention away from them.

That, and I agree with Doreen. As a guess, he seems like the type of guy that would rather just make a quick announcement and walk away rather than have a season full of good-byes and “how does this make you feel knowing it was the last time you’ll do this or that” type of interviews.

“Mike Mussina and Greg Maddux are the two best pitchers of our generation – assuming Moose was always clean”

    Yeah, Pedro Martinez sucked.

  10. saucY November 20th, 2008 at 4:31 pm

i’m sure he had a reason, but why even file for free agency a few weeks ago?

  11. TL1125 November 20th, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Lets not mention, that Pedro Martinez is a first ballot hall of famer, Mussina, he’s on the border.

  12. Chris November 20th, 2008 at 4:35 pm

    TL1125-

Jeez take a chill pill. He said the “two best” not the “only two good ones.” Pedro was (not so much is anymore) one of the other great pitchers of the generation.

  13. TL1125 November 20th, 2008 at 4:39 pm

    Chris-

He could had said “two of the best”, not, the “two best”. Those two have a total different meaning.

  14. Skippy November 20th, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Who knew moose were so sly?

  15. TL1125 November 20th, 2008 at 4:40 pm

I know we love Mike, but, lets not go over board.

He was not better than Randy Johnson, or, Pedro Martinez, so, lets leave it at that.

  16. Irabu's Son November 20th, 2008 at 4:41 pm

    perfectly said, Doreen

  17. Jose R November 20th, 2008 at 4:47 pm

    TL1125:

Mussina was, however, able to perform under the so-called biggest pressure city in the world (unlike Randy). Not to mention that he went out there everyday and did his job quietly, and owned up to his actions (unlike Pedro)

  18. TL1125 November 20th, 2008 at 4:50 pm

    Jose R -

Say whatever you want to about, Pedro Martinez, bottom line is, If he(Pedro Martinez) were to retire this year, no way in H*** the Moooose gets in before Pedro, or even, Johnson. So, your so call performance stats, put it some place else. Haha.

  19. jennifer November 20th, 2008 at 4:51 pm

    TL1125

What in the world is wrong with you?

  20. TL1125 November 20th, 2008 at 4:54 pm

    jennifer-

Jennifer I love Mussina trust me, but, the truth has to be told.

  21. Timmy Lupus November 20th, 2008 at 4:56 pm

    Jose,

I’m as big a Moose fan as there is, but there really isn’t a comparison between them. Pedro Martinez is the most dominant starting pitcher of all time. Regardless of whether like him personally I don’t see how you could deny that.

  22. MR YANKEES GET C.C AND TEXIERRA THATS ALL WE NEED WHY MARQUEZ NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO November 20th, 2008 at 4:58 pm

AM GOING TO MISS IT WHEN I GO TO YANKEE STADIUM AND CHANT MOOSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  23. Gloria November 20th, 2008 at 5:01 pm

    Pete,
Will you be posting the audio?

  24. RustyJohn November 20th, 2008 at 5:25 pm

Yes, Pedro was a better pitcher than Moose, but I’d be curious to see how many wins Moose would have in his career is he spent the first five years of his career in the NL (ala’ Pedro), his entire career in the NL and pitching into his mid-40s (like Maddux), or 8 years in the NL West (Johnson). Those three may have had better “stuff” than Moose, but to consistently have season after season with at or above 200+ innings pitched and one poor season in 18 years in the AL East speaks volumes.

He deserves to be in the Hall- let us hope he doesn’t become the Bert Blyleven of his generation.

  25. bigjf November 20th, 2008 at 6:07 pm

So what the hell took him so long to announce it?

  26. Brad November 20th, 2008 at 6:32 pm

You could sesnse the way he tipped his cap to the fans when he won the 20th game that this was to be his final year.
He went out on his terms and he can’t be faulted for that.
