Statement from Derek Jeter

Peter Abraham
November

Via the Yankees:

“It was a great pleasure playing against – and even more so with – Mike Mussina since I entered the league in 1995. He was a true professional both on and off the field. Moose’s accomplishments in the game over the last 18 years represent a Hall of Fame player.”

always classy that captain of ours

  2. RonH

    Well said by the Captain.

  3. paulie

any chance that Pavano will issue a statement?

  4. raymagnetic

At least we won’t have to read 10 million posts today about why Jeter hasn’t come out and said anything.

  5. saucY

so jeter cares more about moose leaving than swisher joining the team… unbelievable!

  6. Khoa

    Well said. HOF! HOF!

  7. jennifer

If Jeter says he belngs in the hall than he does. :)

  8. S.A.- CC Watch 2008: Making some Yankee fans go bonkers

“Moose’s accomplishments in the game over the last 18 years represent a Hall of Fame player.”

Michael Kay and Francesa didn’t get that memo. :P

  9. Doreen

That’s Jeter for you – short, sweet, to the point!

  10. Yank1

    Where is A-Rod’s statement?

  11. pat

Jeter has been out of the country so cut him some slack on Swisher.

  12. vin

    I want Kei Igawa’s statement.

  13. Jeff NJ

I think Moose will eventually make the hall of fame, but not the first few years he’s eligible. He may be in the same class as Johnson and Maddux. A year after Schilling and Clemens (is eligible anyway). Then within a few years of Pedro, Glavine and Smoltz. After they all get in, Moose will make it. So I’m thinking 2018.

  14. Mike R

I’m really suprised that Richie Sexson didn’t issue a statement about Moose.

  15. vin

    Good HOF breakdown, Jeff NJ…

Since so many of this generation’s great pitchers are at or near the end of the line, makes you wonder which of the current crop of pitchers will make the HOF. I’ll start with: *Roy Halladay*

  16. Al from BK( Its time to start weighing our options beyond CC.)

Hoping Moose ends up in the hall. He is obviously behind some guys like Smoltz, Glavine, Maddux, Clemens, Big Unit. However I think he gets in.

  17. Bryan

    Amen to that.

  18. Stephen

Typical of classless Sal Fasano for not making a statement about his former teammate.

  19. Nick in SF

Moose was going to come back but he was upset that we were upset the he didn’t call Nick Swisher.

Buddy, if you see this: there was no actual apology in that thing you posted, just tap dancing. There was a backhanded retractin, however. The best I can hope for? Perhaps. I’ll try to reply later when I get hame and have more time.

  20. Melvin

    BOOOORING!

All that money to a P.R. firm for that drivel?

  21. MooseCall

Moose is better that Glavine. Glavine has better stats becuase he played in the NL and played significantly longer. But Mussina was the better pitcher.

  22. saucY

    Moose > Glavine

  23. Al from BK( Its time to start weighing our options beyond CC.)

Why is everyone mad? Not everyone needs to make a statement about his career. Moose’s career does not require global praise. Everyone is very proud of him and I for one am glad he can relax with his family.

  24. Melvin

    Glavine’s wife > Moose’s wife

  25. Melvin

“I for one am glad he can relax with his family.”

Poor Moose. Now he’ll what it feels like to have his wife scream, “take out da garbage!”

  26. Nick in SF

Our offer to CC is now on hold pending his Moose statement.

  27. Timmy Lupus

You guys really think Clemens deserves to be in the HOF after all the steroid nonsense? To me his numbers are just as suspect as Barry Bonds. I don’t think either of them belong in the hall.

  28. mel

Okay, I’ll be the first to say it. No way Jeter wrote that verbatim.

But that was classic Jeter with the HOF plug.

  29. Lord Stein Vader

Bring me Sabathia and Sheets. No Burnett and Lowe.

  30. S.A.- CC Watch 2008: Making some Yankee fans go bonkers

    Moose on now with Francesa

  31. AP

    Mussina on with Francessa now

  32. Melvin

    Fancessa now on with Moose

  33. CK in LA

From one class act to another!!

  34. Tom

    Ah, the rare tripple whammy.

  35. Nick in SF

Minka will be issuing her statement from the Austin Starbucks in about an hour.

  36. kd

I am at work and cannot liked to Francesca, what’s Moose saying?

  37. mel

    Nick in SF,

Isn’t it a little early for Minka to be stumping for Jeter in the HOF?

  38. mel

    kd,

After the q&a, they’re reminiscing about his postseason performances. I’ve never heard Moose so content.

But he’s not changing his mind. Has things to do at home. The audio should be up later.

Talking about coming to NY to play now.

  39. Dassit

Pete, anything on the 40 man roster? Anybody got dropped to protect one of the Rule 5-eligible players?

  40. jimmy27

“going to New York was the best move I ever made”
    Mike Mussina

  41. Tom

My first job involved writing press releases. There is no way on earth Jeter wrote that. Some media relations wonk wrote it, an editor read it, and somebody gave it the green light to run it.

All the while Jeter is most likely driving in his burnt orange Ford edge to meet Minka at some palatial pleasure dome.

  42. kd

    thanks mel.

  43. Jeter

    Blazing Copper!

  44. Nick in SF

Isn’t that what she and Jeter have been doing already?

    Oh, you said STUMPING.

    Never mind.

  45. Al from BK( Its time to start weighing our options beyond CC.)

“Our offer to CC is now on hold pending his Moose statement.”

    LMAO.

According to MLBTR the Angels have zeroed in on Tex and have made it the number 1 priority to sign him. Given the fact they traded Casey Kotchman for him it is certainly in their best interest. The SF Giants are rumored to put it in a bid soon, however they are leery of going to high given the enormous contract they gave to Zito 2 years ago. The Dodgers have taken their bid for Manny Ramirez off the table however he is still considered their number 1 priority this off-season.

Here come the Dodgers. This has a CC bid written all over it should Manny not sign there.

  46. Tucson Ken

Great pitcher, great career, and one of the few high priced free agent pitchers who actually were worth the $ the Yankees spent. His comeback & reinventing himself last year was truly amazing.
Head and shoulders smarter than the average baseball buffoon he played with and against, Moose was just not interested in being one of the guys. Was always engaging when questions of substance were asked.
I love Derek to death. Gives his all, plays hurt even when he shouldn’t, but he is the blandest interview or spokesman in the world.

  47. mel

I predict that 4 years from now it’ll be Hawaii vs. Montoursville in the LLWS U.S. Championship game with Moose in the dugout.

When his kids grow up, we’ll see Moose in a uni as a pitching coach.

  48. MattNC

Someone needs to point out to those who don’t think that Moose is HOF worthy that Mike was +117 wins over losses while pitching in the AL East during the steroids/weight training era. EVERY OTHER +100 wins over losses pitcher in the entire history of baseball (including dead ball era pitchers, NL pitchers not facing a DH, etc.) is either in the Hall of Fame (16 pitchers) or headed to the Hall of Fame (Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens*, Greg Maddux, Pedro Martinez, Tom Glavine).

In addition, when someone brings up the 20-win argument, we should keep in mind that pitchers used to make up to 42 starts a year in the 70s and even more than that in earlier years, instead of the 33-34 of today. Mussina won 18 games 6 times and 17 games 8 times. If he had an extra 6-8 starts a year (keep in mind that Mussina has winning decisions in fully half his starts — 270 wins in 536 starts) he probably would have won 20 games at least 5 times.

Mussina has an ERA+ of 123 (ERA adjusted for league average and ballpark; 100 is average, higher is better). Here are some HOF pitcher ERA+ values (every HOF starting pitcher who pitched most of his career post-WWII is here, under 300 wins has win total listed):

    Catfish Hunter 104 (224 wins)
    Early Wynn 107
    Don Sutton 108
    Nolan Ryan 111
    Robin Roberts 113 (286 wins)
    Jim Bunning 114 (224 wins)
    Ferguson Jenkins 115 (284 wins)
    Steve Carlton 115
    Phil Niekro 115
    Gaylord Perry 117
    Warren Spahn 118
    Bob Lemon 119 (207 wins)
    Don Drysdale 121 (209 wins)
    Bob Feller 122 (266 wins)
    Juan Marichal 123 (243 wins)
    Mike Mussina 123 (270 wins)
    Jim Palmer 126 (268 wins)
    Bob Gibson 127 (251 wins)
    Tom Seaver 127
    Sandy Koufax 131 (165 wins)
    Whitey Ford 133 (236 wins)

    Mike Mussina’s Bill James HOF Monitor: Pitching – 121.0 (67) (Likely HOFer > 100)

Mussina also has one of the best K/BB ratios of any HOF pitcher, 2813/785, or 3.58/1.

    Mike Mussina is a HOF’er.

ERA + of 5 other +100 wins pitchers not inducted yet:

    Tom Glavine 118
    Greg Maddux 132
    Randy Johnson 137
    Roger Clemens* 143
    Pedro Martinez 154

  49. Bob

What rubbish and pablum from Jeter. None of the Yankees liked Mike, he is a quirky iconoclast, what a steaming bunch of hoo haw

  50. JimmyH

    Tom,
Of course you’re declaring that Jeter never wrote the statement. As a former press release wonk, you’re just too jealous and unable to admit that it would take you all day and then some to come up with something so succinct yet classy and, it still wouldn’t hold a candle to what Jeter comes up with.
Let’s face it, some have natural abilities and some don’t. You happen to fall into the second category.
