This just in: Johnny is having fun
I’m not why this was sent to me. But, hey, free content is free content. In this photo provided by the nice folks at the Magic Kingdom, here is Johnny Damon with his wife Michelle and three of his kids. He’s holding Devon while Madeyln and Jackson stand in front.
Why doesn’t anybody ever send a photo of Derek Jeter enjoying his offseason activities? Would that be too much to ask?

Johnny rules!!
Whew! Michelle Damon is a Fox!
Derek Jeter doesn’t have fun.
I’m not sure there is an athlete in sports with a better disposition than Johnny Damon.
Isn’t Doreen in Disney this week? Is she stalking the Damon’s in the Magic Kingdom?

According to a person in the Yankees’ loop, the team is reluctant to raise its offer to Sabathia, even if such hesitancy causes him to sign with the Angels.
Meanwhile, with word getting out that Pettitte is consorting with Torre, who still is loathed by some of the Yankees’ upper management people, Pettitte surely hopes that the Yankees increase their offer.
I have a question about the last post.
Does anyone know when players in the WBC will leave the team? If the WBC starts 3/5, will the players stay wih the Yankees til then, or will they leave sooner?
I’m asking because I am starting to plan my annual spring training trip, and want to see everyone. I like to go early in the spring so I get a chance to see the kids before they get sent down. Last year I got to see Montero’s only AB of the spring (a monster HR to the opposite field).
Pete you don’t remember the Derek Jeter, Jessica Biel pictures from 2 years ago?
That was just a taste from the life of Jeter. What a lucky SOB
lol, Patrick.
Even I’m jealous of Jeter.
Jeez. Another new thread.
There are quite a few people on this board who haven’t learned a darn thing since the dynasty years.
Those teams were great primarily because of their starting pitching. They have not been back to the World Series since their rotation took a huge tumble after the 2003 season.
The dumbest thing the Yanks could do if they lose out on Sabathia is responding with signing Teixeira or focusing on offense.
This strategy hasn’t worked since 2004. Why does anyone think it’s going to work now?
What did Einstein once say?
“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
They Yanks need to focus on the rotation. If they can’t land Sabathia and/or Burnett, there’s a chance Cashman could swing a major deal for someone else.
Settling for the Ben Sheets and Oliver Perez’s of the world as Plan B simply because they are available is like choosing between eating liver or dog food for Thanksgiving dinner.
They’ll need to find another way.
Focus on the rotation and defense and worry about offense later.
If people are dead set on watching this team miss the postseason again in 2009 – signing Teixeira as a backup plan for losing out on Sabathia is the perfect strategy going forward.
It all starts and ends with starting pitching. You’d think some fans might’ve actually paid attention those years they were winning rings.
Forget Teixeira. It’s a loser strategy.
Viper-
No need to post the same thing 3 times, once is enough.
“That was just a taste from the life of Jeter. What a lucky SOB”
You want to be dumped for a boy-bander who brought sexy back?
Viper, now that you posted your magnum opus on three separate threads, what’s your point-other than the old cliché that pitching wins championships?
Cashman has rightfully targeted CC as his top free agent target this offseason. If CC chooses to sign somewhere else plan “B” might be sign both Lowe and Burnett. It could also be signing Teixeria.
The Yankees have tried to fix their rotation for years. Even before 2004. After the 2000 season they signed Mussina instead of Manny. In 2005 they chose Randy Johnson over Beltran. Neither of those moves paid off in the end with a ring.
The fact of the matter is that after CC the free agent pitching options are all risks. Sheets and Burnett could turn out to be Carl Pavanos. Lowe could revert back to his previous AL east self and Oliver Perez is, well, Oliver Perez. Looking at that list makes Texeira look like a “safe” option. It is also one that will not tie the Yankees hands while trying to work out a trade for an established top of the rotation starter (Peavy for example).
As long as it’s not on a police blotter report, I’m fine with not hearing about or seeing any photos of Cap between November and February. Folks — please ignore our host on this one. Let the man have his privacy, and don’t encourage papparatzism, if that’s even a word.
Meanwhile, some ‘Letters to Santa’ —
Right Field Wall: Please re-sign Bobby! He’s such a gentleman.
Disabled List: Please sign CC. I’ll need company for the last 3 years of his deal. And forget Burnett, I’m sick of lookin’ at that b@stard.
Game Ball: Lowe? You’re kidding me, right?
Official Scorer: Please sign Tex at 1B. Have carpal tunnel writing E-3.
Voice of God: Please sign Tex. Can’t wait to say “Taaay-shear-raaaaaaa”.
Fourth Place 2009-2013: I miss you. Please trade Hughes, Kennedy, Cano, Brackman, et al., for some NL pitcher. Or anyone. I’ll keep the lights on.
Microphone: Send a limo every game to make sure Kenny is in the booth!
Happy Thanksgiving, my pinstriped brothers and sisters! And in the meanwhile ‘Let’s go NEW YORK FOOTBALL JINTS!’
Official Scorer: Please sign Tex at 1B. Have carpal tunnel writing E-3.
Do you watch the games?? He has an awesome glove..
“Do you watch the games?? He has an awesome glove..”
That was my point on that one. Sorry if it didn’t come across. I love Jason, but for the most part his ‘D’ was a horror story… He had a few gems with the glove here and there to tease us, but Tex would be huge upgrade in the field…
Jeter’s off-season activities are probably not appropriate for this family blog.
“I’m not sure there is an athlete in sports with a better disposition than Johnny Damon.”
When the inside of your head is basically a hamster running very slowly in a wheel you can afford to smile like a loon all the time.

————————
First off, I said they really haven’t concentrated on the rotation since 2003 – not 2000.
Secondly, Randy Johnson is one man. There are 5-men to a starting rotation.
They filled the rest of their rotation with the likes of Jaret Wright and Carl Pavano. Both had histories of health issues even before they signed and Wright had sucked his entire career for the exception of his rookie year.
That ain’t gonna get it done. And Burnett and Sheets are no better.
Trying to counterbalance possibly losing out on Sabathia and/or Burnett by signing Teixera is a stupid idea.
Cashman may need to find another capable arm – not keep making the same mistake over and over again.
It seems now that he realizes that outslugging opponents is not the way to win and I wouldn’t be surprised if he swung a major deal if Sabathia signs elsewhere.
You think the idea of signing Teixeira is stupid, but you’re not really explaining what you want the Yankees to do other than trade for a pitcher better than AJ Burnett. What pitchers are you talking about and what do you think the Yankees should trade for them?

It’s tough to answer that question because I don’t know everyone who could be had. There could be several that we don’t know about yet and might materialize during the Winter Meetings.
Hey, that’s part of what the Winter Meetings are for. Perhaps it’s a name who hasn’t been mentioned at all thus far.
The point is that makeshift rotations who are loaded with pitchers with questionable histories for one reason another is not exactly wise. And durability should be near the top of the list as a requirement for potential suitors.
Sabathia fits that criteria. Pettitte fits that criteria. Burnett and Sheets don’t. And Perez is a NL pitcher who is good for 5.0 IP because he allows too many base runners.
I’m sure web footage of Jeter’s offseason activities will be leaked via sex tape at some point.
Journeyman relief pitcher Ricky Stone was diagnosed with brain cancer last August. Unfortunately, he was playing for a Taiwanese team at the time, and so has no US health insurance. He got sick just three days before is wife was supposed to start a new job with insurance.
His friends in MLB have organized a charity auction on eBay to raise money to pay for his care and to support his family. Many players and teams have donated memorabilia, including the Yanks.
Press release is here:

The auction is at eBay, here:

There’s a bunch of Yankees stuff that was signed the day of the last game at the House That Ruth Built. Including game-worn jerseys, balls, and hats.
This CC deal has the smell of Greg Maddox coming to the Yankees a few years ago. I doubt it is going to happen.
As far as Burnett etc…..they are all a crap shoot that is why you develop pitching in the organization. Unfortunately the Yankees thought they had that a year ago but were left holding the bag so far by Hughes, Kennedy and whomever else you want to throw in there.
If the Yankees do not sign CC they will have to at least sign a free agent pitcher and then hope that Hughes comes out of the woodwork this season.
On the bright side if the Yankees payroll goes down, all of these people living off the Yankees luxury tax will have to find another source of income.
liver for thanksgiving?
paparizzism? does it look like they didnt want that picture taken? looks more to me like they stopped someone and asked them to snap a few for thier christmas cards.
thins never quite work out the way you’d like, the girls look like johnny (especially the little one) and the son looks like mom!
as for whoever insinuated that johnny is stupid, if stupid means that everybody you run into says you’re a great guy and give of your time and emotions to those in need, we should all be so stupid.
happy holidays to johnny and his family, an all-world good guy
Viper:
That is the whole reason to sign the best FA, if CC isn’t coming TEX is the best option, because you don’t trade the farm…Having a week farm system is why the yanks struggled from 2002 till now… The farm system, with a good veteran/FA mix is what made the dynasty years.
Well Pete, it’s not the Captain, but how about a photo of Jorge

ham fighters – I don’t think she is the mother of the boy. I think the twins are from his 1st marriage. All 3 sure are cute. How cool would it be to have Johnny as your Dad?
ham fighters… is there some kind of rule that says you can’t be a great guy if you’re stupid? Ever since Damon collided with that second baseman in the outfield with Boston, he’s had a screw or two loose up top.
it may not be a popular notion, but I think Id rather let Pettitte go to LA than bring him back.
Get the 2 picks, and it forces Cashman to make a move/trade for more dominant, younger pitcher who will produce at levels I dont have confidence Andy would perform at in 2009.
Turn Two,
I agree, unless losing Pettitte means a hard push towards Lowe. I would much rather have Petitte than Lowe.
TurnTwo
You’re not alone. I love Andy, but if he seriously doesn’t think he should take a cut after the HGH scandal righ at the start of pre-season and then a less than stellar preformance, especially the 2nd half of the season when they needed him the most, then I’d say thanks for the memories and best wishes in LA. Better to sign someone who is younger even if the health concern is a bit risky and get the 2 picks if he declines arbitration. I just don’t have the same confidence in him any more
stupid guy’s thinking about who’s less fortunate and how he can help them, about how to help the people who are serving our country, about how to make his team better and keep the attitude in the clubhouse loose.
naked jumping jacks asise, i dont buy for a second that johnny’s stupid, he’s just humble and has a great self-depricating sense of humor.
“stupid guy’s thinking about who’s less fortunate and how he can help them, about how to help the people who are serving our country”
you also dont need to be smart to think about helping others who are less fortunate, either…
i dont know Johnny personally, obviously, but to me he doesnt come across as the sharpest tool in the shed.
that doesnt mean, though, that he’s a bad guy or that he’s not a decent person. i think his actions speak for themselves.
re: paparazzi
im pretty sure pete never ran the pic of arod with the stripper in toronto or any of the pics of arod coming and going at madonna’s or any or the shots of jeter with his girls.
i may be wrong but i dont remember pete running any paparazzi shots of anyone.
i think someone owes pete an apology!
“Better to sign someone who is younger even if the health concern is a bit risky and get the 2 picks if he declines arbitration. I just don’t have the same confidence in him any more”
just to clarify, i dont buy into the alternative of signing someone younger who is a potential health risk just for the sake of signing someone to fill the roster spot and be able to take the picks, either.
if pettitte wants another $16M, let him go to the dodgers or anywhere else. id like to have him back but not at that money. remember it was him who left ny first, that career-long bond isnt there anymore. he can retire as a yankee if he wants or as a dodger or astro, thats his choice. i heard the yankees were hoping to get him in the $10M – $12 area, even that’s paying a ny premium for him at this stage. i’d offer him $11M and tell him it expires dec. 1st then move on.
“i heard the yankees were hoping to get him in the $10M – $12 area, even that’s paying a ny premium for him at this stage.”
i dont even care about the money he’s asking for… if he comes back, and is the best option for the yankees and the production they expect from the spot in the rotation he is to fill, then give him what he wants, or negotiate and meet half way.
i just dont know if its better to bring Andy back, or force Cashman to an alternative plan which may be a better move for the Yankees down the road that to just maintain status quo in the rotation because you’re afraid of where innings are going to come from.
you should shop around for the best option for the rotation, not just bring back a guy because he happens to have a past with the team and its convenient.
i just dont buy into the idea that the Yankees NEED him back. Andy had an awful second half last year on top of the mediocre first half he had… why is it assumed that he’ll just be better next year? is there not a better option in the market, via trade or FA than a guy with an ERA over 4.50 and a WHIP over 1.4?
Why anyone wants to bring back a washed-up, steroid abusing loser of a pitcher is beyond me. Pettite was terrible in the 2nd half. Good riddance. He sucks. Let him go quote the bible ad nauseum in LA
If Sabathia plays waiting games much longer or goes elsewhere Cashman should make a fast move to sign A.J. Burnett, sign Pettitte as the rotation lefthander then hold off until Dec. 8-11 at the meetings in Vegas.
Get RHP Zach Greinke and OF David DeJesus from K.C. for Kennedy, Melky, Britton, and Shelley.
“Get RHP Zach Greinke and OF David DeJesus from K.C. for Kennedy, Melky, Britton, and Shelley.”
ha!!
not to andy pettitte:
FA starters who are probably gonna have around the same 2009 as you are:
b. looper
j. garland
l. hernandez
r. wolf
ol. perez
od. perez
s. ponson
b. penny
m. hendrickson
how many of them u think are gonna make more than $10M?

———————————————————–
Since when does a speech impediment make somebody stupid? He may not be a nuclear physicist, but, he’s far from stupid. He gives good interviews, regardless of how he talks. He’s spent a lot of his own money and a lot of his own personal time with charities and in particular, The Wounded Warrior Project, which is also a big Steinbrenner family charity. It’s a pity that fans think that any players small faults is fair game and that they are entitled to own the payers personal lives. If I had to make a guess, you probably aren’t the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree.
“how many of them u think are gonna make more than $10M?”
i still dont care. money doesnt mean anything to the yankees.
if he’s the best option, in their opinion, then give him the $.
if he’s not, then dont give it to him.
but arguing over salary shouldnt be the reason why Pettitte isnt back… his expected performance should be.
damon’s a thinking guy. in locker room interviews he never goes to the ‘crash davis’ answers like jeter and torre ALWAYS do. he thinks about the question and answers it as truthfully as he can and throws in a joke whereever possible. he always sounds thoughtful to me and his courtesy and generosity are so pronounced the people often point it out without being asked.
johnny damon stupid? i dont buy it.
so turn two, you’re saying pay pettitte $16M, when there are maybe 5 guys likely to be as effective as him who will take $5M or less to do the same job?
“so turn two, you’re saying pay pettitte $16M, when there are maybe 5 guys likely to be as effective as him who will take $5M or less to do the same job?”
im saying i couldnt care less how much a player makes as long as they help the team win.
ok u take pettitte at $16M and here’s how ill spend my $16M:
livan hernandez to start and garret anderson for the 4th of/ bench/ dh
which helps the team more?
probably be able to throw in rocco baldelli as p/t centerfielder off the bench.
“livan hernandez to start and garret anderson for the 4th of/ bench/ dh. which helps the team more?”
andy pettite. thats just silly.
“which helps the team more?”
and if the yankees wanted to, and thought Anderson was a great option for the bench or help at DH, etc, they could sign him too.
they arent strapped for cash, nor are they working under salary cap restrictions.

OK, own up. You’re really Randy I, aren’t you?
I will take a short term risk on Sheets and Penny provided that both pass their physical. Oliver Perez is another potential risky sign with upside attached to it. If Yankees can’t sign CC and AJ, these are the pitchers Yankees should go as plan B.
Hey Jackson, nice Undertaker t-shirt!
“Why doesn’t anybody ever send a photo of Derek Jeter enjoying his offseason activities? Would that be too much to ask? ”
————————————————————
Ummmm, NSFW, Pete.
OTOH, I’d rather see him find something for Joba to do in the offseason. Maybe introduce him to some of his little friends.
Joba could own this city too, plus he’d never have to drive home. Lower risk than hanging out back in Lincoln.
