Yankees announce spring schedule

Here’s a release from the Yankees on spring training. I’ll post my third-annual spring training travel guide sometime next week. It’s never too early to make plans.

————

The 26-time World Champion New York Yankees announced today they will open their 2009 Major League spring training schedule on Wednesday, February 25 at 1:05 p.m. vs. the Toronto Blue Jays at Knology Park in Dunedin, Fla. The Yankees’ first home spring training game is scheduled for Thursday, February 26 at 1:15 p.m. vs. the Tampa Bay Rays. This season marks the earliest start to the Yankees’ spring training game schedule in at least 60 years.

In addition, the Yankees announced that ticket prices for 2009 spring training games at George M. Steinbrenner Field will remain the same as last season.

The Yankees will play a 33-game Grapefruit League schedule as well as two home exhibition games against World Baseball Classic teams at George M. Steinbrenner Field. On Tuesday, March 3 at 1:15 p.m., the Yankees will host Team USA, and will welcome Team Canada on Thursday, March 5 at 1:15 p.m.

Included in the Yankees’ 16 total home exhibition games against Major League competition are six night contests (7:15 p.m. start time) on Friday, March 6 vs. Detroit; Tuesday, March 10 vs. Cincinnati; Tuesday, March 17 vs. Pittsburgh; Thursday, March 19 vs. Toronto; Tuesday, March 24 vs. Boston and Friday, March 27 vs. Cincinnati.

Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report on Friday, February 13, with their first workout slated for Saturday, February 14. The Yankees’ first full-squad workout is scheduled for Wednesday, February 18. The World Baseball Classic will be played from March 5 through March 23.

This will be the Yankees’ 14th spring training at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla. The complex was renamed for the Yankees’ Chairman on March 27, 2008, following two unanimous resolutions supporting the change issued by the Hillsborough County Commission and the Tampa City Council.

Season tickets for the Yankees’ complete 2009 home exhibition schedule will go on sale beginning the second week of December. Individual-game spring tickets will go on sale in January. For information, fans should call (813) 879-2244 or visit www.steinbrennerfield.com.

Oops. Didn’t see the new thread.

There are quite a few people on this board who haven’t learned a darn thing since the dynasty years.

Those teams were great primarily because of their starting pitching. They have not been back to the World Series since their rotation took a huge tumble after the 2003 season.

The dumbest thing the Yanks could do if they lose out on Sabathia is responding with signing Teixeira or focusing on offense.

This strategy hasn’t worked since 2004. Why does anyone think it’s going to work now?

    What did Einstein once say?

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

They Yanks need to focus on the rotation. If they can’t land Sabathia and/or Burnett, there’s a chance Cashman could swing a major deal for someone else.

Settling for the Ben Sheets and Oliver Perez’s of the world as Plan B simply because they are available is like choosing between eating liver or dog food for Thanksgiving dinner.

They’ll need to find another way.

Focus on the rotation and defense and worry about offense later.

If people are dead set on watching this team miss the postseason again in 2009 – signing Teixeira as a backup plan for losing out on Sabathia is the perfect strategy going forward.

It all starts and ends with starting pitching. You’d think some fans might’ve actually paid attention those years they were winning rings.

Forget Teixeira. It’s a loser strategy.

The Yankees were very good offensive teams in the years they won the World Series. In their best season, 1998, they led the league in runs, were in the top 5 twice, and in the top 10 all 4 years.

This year they were 10th in runs scored and are replacing 2 of their 3 best run producers with less talented players. The lineup has so many questions in it. Is Posada or Matsui going to bounce back and have healthy, solid seasons? Is Cano going to hit like he did 2 years ago or like he did last year? Can Nady repeat his career year? Are they going to get any runs out of the centerfield spot?

Ignoring that the lineup, or any other part of the team, has problems is a bad plan.

Is there a date the schedules have to be released? I am still waiting on the Brewers schedule to publish to my readers.

Tampa is a pretty gross city. The sad thing is that it has so much potential.
