Test from iPhone

Peter Abraham

This should help in terms of making quicker updates. Don’t mind me.

UPDATE, 12:14 p.m.: Hey, does anybody out there use the Word Press blog application on their iPhone? If so, drop me an e-mail. I could use some tips. It would be great to be able to set up a post earlier in the day (like, say, the lineup) and then add to it and publish it from the clubhouse once the lineup is set. Or if it changes. Is that possible?

Thanks from Apple for the free publicity. :)

  9. Jason

can someone explain to me ibeer because that sounds like a reason i may go buy an iphone today

  10. Steve Jobs

I guess this means a lot of typos Pete!! The iPhone keyboard is awful.

  11. Peter Rabbit

Ah, this can only be a good thing for the blog! Hope you love it! Download a cool app with player stats!

  12. EDUB

People putting together rosters with Joba and Hughes/Aceves/Coke in it are not thinking. We are not putting two kids in the rotation again. It is not even close to happening. The Yankees will put 3 veteran arms in the rotation around Wang and ahead of Joba even if it means bringing David Cone out of retirement. Cashman learned his lesson from last year and Joba will be on an innings limit again anyway.

Also we are not signing 2 FA bats so people can get that out of their head. Maybe 1 FA bat and 1 through a trade or maybe just through a trade. IMO, there will be offensive upgrade through a trade or 1 signing but that is it. Pete’s list on the other thread is a logical one.

  13. EDUB

Jesus the Red Sox signed Pedroia to a 6 year deal for 40.5 mil. What a friggin steal

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=3741730

  14. Bob

OMG how did they sign that midget until he is 32 years old for 6 million a year????
Maybe we have the wrong GM
    :(

  15. Trevor

“We are not putting two kids in the rotation again.”

Yes we are, if no CC Lowe Burnett doesn’t happen. Hey even if 1 happens “two kids in the rotation” could still happen.

  16. William Buckner

    EDUB and Bob,
They just bought out his arbitration. He gets paid more now then he would and takes less in the back end. Yankees did the same last year with Cano, Brewers did with Braun, and Rays did with Longoria (unfortunately, we didn’t get similar return, this year). It’s becoming common practice with good, young, position players.

  17. matt

    Should have gone blackberry pete.

Pedroia at 6 mill a yr is a huge steal for the Sox. he gets less then David Wright and he has an MVP and a World Series Ring.

I hate the Sox but Pedroia is a guy I can respect. He plays hard every second of every game. Hopefully Cano took notes at the way Pedroia throws his body at every ball hit anywhere near hinm.

  18. mel

Still no news? I see it’s been driving some of you crazy.

Still see that there’s a lot of AJ & Manny hate, even though they can help us win.

Pedroia must’ve grew up in a shoebox to think that was a really good deal. ESPN reporting that Pedroia got “rewarded” with a long-term deal. That’s how players get rewarded after consecutive ROY & MVP campaigns? Could there be a “C” in Pedroia’s future?

BTW, starting Hughes & IPK is a lot different than starting Joba and a healthier Hughes. We’ll still have IP count issues, but what’s the worry? It really seems like CC will have no choice but to choose the Yankees. I know he really enjoyed Milwaukee, but $40M is a lot to leave on the table when you have a “family to feed”.

  19. mel

    *must’ve grown up

  20. mel

    William Buckner,

I thought it was something similar to Cano. But why 6 years? He should’ve been eligible to be a free agent much earlier than age 32.

  21. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    Bob,

Ya, that Pedroia deal was a steal.

ROY and MVP in two years and he gets 6.5 mill? He should have pushed for 10.

  22. EDUB

    Trevor,

I still believe that if for some odd reason we don’t land any of those three we will look for outside help before giving Hughes/Aceves/Kennedy/Coke a shot for our 5th man. Oliver Perez perhaps or push for something in a trade.

Hughes needs to work the beginning of the year in AAA and Cashman knows better than to overvalue September numbers of Aceves and Coke like we did last year.

  23. Laura - The Hot Stove is Stone cold!

The Hobbitt got robbed. He should be making at least 8mil a year.

  24. sd

    ————————————————————-

Except the Red Sox got a MUCH better deal on midget than the Yankees got on Cano. The Red Sox are proving once again their front office is far better at building a team than the Yankees front office in every way. Don’t expect the Yankees to pass the Red Sox again anytime soon my fellow Yankee fans.

  25. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    sd,

Yes, and Pedroia has been better and FAR more consistent than Cano too.

  26. mel

Baseball’s going to need to restructure itself as far as how long they control a player, free agency, etc. Or maybe the market will take care of it.

Guys like Cano, Pedroia, Joba, guys who are young and have proven themselves make their big money in their prime years. Not get their big contracts when they’re on the wrong side of 30.

It’ll make the game younger by pushing the dinosaurs out of the game.

  27. jennifer

Pete you best sign a contract with Apple. No free publicity!!

  28. Paulie

Boras has touted Oliver Perez as “the next Johan Santana”, and like always, has cherry picked enough comparative stats between to two to make a valid argument.
Oliver Perez will get big scratch, so no thanks.

That Pedroia deal is silly. Why would he do that? What kind of freaking bargaining power does Theo have that he convinced him that was a good idea. I hate when things work out so well for them: that kid is nasty.
    Youkilis will be next.
I guess all the “they won’t have all that money coming off the books because Youkilis and Pedroia are headed to arbitration” argument is crap.

  29. Laura - The Hot Stove is Stone cold!

The CWS are sending Javy Vazquez to ATL. Not sure what ATL is thinking. The guy has been horrible for quite some time now.

  30. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    mel,

A lot of those so-called “dinosaurs” are still pretty darned good.

  31. Laura - The Hot Stove is Stone cold!

“That Pedroia deal is silly. Why would he do that? ”

According to Red Sox obsessed Peter Gammons, The Hobbitt loves playing in BOS so much that he was willing to forgo arbitration and free agency just to stay there. I think that he could have gotten a better deal.

  32. Paulie

Joba has proven that he can throw a baseball hard.

He hasn’t come close to proving himself the way Cano and Pedroia have.

Can he at least pitch a full year? 20 Starts maybe?

In fact, if Cashman locked up Joba now long term, after the injuries and drinking and driving thing, I’d be upset. It only makes sense when it’s close to a sure thing, and Joba isn’t. Not yet, anyhow.

  33. Peter Rabbit

    http://iphone.wordpress.org/

    Pete, try this out.

  34. raymagnetic

How is the deal a steal and how is it any different than Cano’s deal? I didn’t see anyone here say the Yankees got a steal on Cano’s deal last year even though he had 2 years like the year Pedroia had this past year.

People here really go out of their way to knock Cashman and praise Theo.

Cano’s contract is a guaranteed 4 years for 30 mil with 2 team options. That’s a steal for a guy who put up the numbers Cano did his first three years in pinstripes. Cano only made 3.6 million last year.

Just because Pedroia won the MVP doesn’t make it a steal. Look at his numbers and Cano’s numbers their first three years in the league and then compare the deals.

  35. pat

Did the Sox buy out 2 or 3 free agency years with Pedroia?

  36. pat

“That Pedroia deal is silly. Why would he do that? ”

The promise of the “C” for his uniform.

  37. Paulie

    I agree, Laura.

But, you know what: It’s nice to see a guy take a discount to play for the team he really wants to play for, and not just chase the money around the league. Plus, it’s not like they offered him 4million a year. The guy is now officially loaded. ha.

  38. Paulie

Where did anyone say that Cano deal wasn’t good?

That deal was awesome, at the time, when it looked like Cano was moving forward and not in the way he has.

Oh, that’s right. I forgot about the stance change.

  39. Bronx Jeers

Elves are not known for their intelligence. Good for him though. I guess.

That agent probably isn’t going to win over any new clients anytime soon I’m guessing.

  40. EDUB

Wishful thinking but maybe the new-found wealth will lead to a Cano-like season for Pedroia in ‘09.

Eh, hes probably too much of a “gritty hard-nosed role player” to let that happen to him.

  41. mel

    Prince,

I still don’t like having to pay for what a player did for another team.

And I don’t like the length of indentured servitude for drafted players.

I’d like the Yankees to have a crack at players who are 25 rather than 35.

Waaaa. I’m whining. Sorry about that.

  42. Laura - The Hot Stove is Stone cold!

“But, you know what: It’s nice to see a guy take a discount to play for the team he really wants to play for, and not just chase the money around the league.”

Paulie, I hope you remember you said this when CC signs with a Cali team. :)

  43. Paulie

Pedroia had a rough couple months in his rookie start. Since, he’s hit about .365, struck out less than almost everyone in the league and played awesome defense.
I hardly think, at this time, the two should be compared in any way shape or form.
They’re both good. Pedroia just showed it much more this year, and was rewarded justly. Just as Cano was.
Let’s just hope Cano can rebound to at least close to what he was, and for the whole year, not just the last three weeks of it.

  44. saucY

i hope he puts up numbers like cano did the year after signing an extension :)

  45. Mr. Exceptional

This move by Pedroia makes me like him a little more. I give the guy credit. He takes what is still a very good offer and leaves his team with some flexibilty to better themselves.

It would be nice if the Yankees had guys like that (paging Andy Pettitte).

Will Derek Jeter take a little less in his next contract to keep the Yankees viable?

    Interesting things to ponder.

  46. Paulie

Laura, I’m on record here as saying that I think he will. As much as I don’t like to not get him, those huge contracts never EVER work, so I won’t mind it so much when his arm falls of, and he’s lost in the mix of nothingness:)

  47. William Buckner

Can’t say better deal Cano vs. Pedroia. I think you have to wait until it plays out. You can have injury or ineffectiveness. Pedroia can turn complacent like Cano did. Over the turn, I think Yankees are paying of 32 million, Sox, over 40.

It’s a good deal, but it’s really par for the course.

I also think the deal is effected by Pedroia service time. He was older when you made it to MLB then Cano. Pedroia went to college and then was in minors. That’s why he’ll be 32 when it expires.

  48. John L

The Sox bought out all Pedroia’s arbitration years, two free-agent years and have a club option for a third free-agent year. This is a great deal both for the club and Pedroia.

  49. Paulie

hope he puts up numbers like cano did the year after signing an extension

Man, I would say that too, but the only way that happens is if all the balls the guy hits goes at guys because he hits everything. He doesn’t strike out, and he walks a ton when compared to other second year players. When he gets a better grasp on the zone, he’ll be even better.

  50. Ariel

In deciding whether someone will or will not disrupt the team chemistry, the clubhouse, create unrest and the like, I will leave that up to management to determine. Presumably, Cashman will have spoken to the Captain and other senior/key players before making any such decision, including assessment of any evaluations by current and erstwhile field management personnel. Neither pundit nor fan is qualified to make that determination.

  51. mel

    Okay, the picture’s getting clearer.

But who’s going to want Pedroia when he’s 32? He’ll be fat and …. bald!

Just kidding, just kidding. I haven’t poked fun at L’il Dustin in a long time.

Whatever, as long as the Yankees mind their p’s & q’s, who cares!

  52. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    Mel,

Ya, I agree…in terms of getting younger, but the problem seems to be that everyone else wants to do the same and thus teams are retaining their players before free agency…some anyways.

do you have anyone in mind specifically in terms of paying for what a player did on another team? just curious.

Kevin Brown, Randy Johnson, Javier Vasquez would all fit that bill if you ask me…so I agree with you there…but two of those three were beyond Old when we got em.

  53. Mr. Exceptional

Pedroia will not turn complacent. Sorry to defend the Sox on here, but the guy plays hard all the time. It doesn’t appear to be in his character.

Cano for whatever reason is less mature than Pedroia, and unless he grows up he’ll squander his potential.

What’s the old saying, “Youth is wasted on the young.” Perfectly fits Cano.

People on here need to realize that they might be looking at the Sox version of Jeter, and in Youklis the Sox version of O’Neill.

  54. Fredo Corleone

“Just because Pedroia won the MVP doesn’t make it a steal. Look at his numbers and Cano’s numbers their first three years in the league and then compare the deals.”

Can’t. Pedroia’s only been up for 2 seasons.

  55. Laura - The Hot Stove is Stone cold!

“Laura, I’m on record here as saying that I think he will. As much as I don’t like to not get him, those huge contracts never EVER work, so I won’t mind it so much when his arm falls of, and he’s lost in the mix of nothingness:)”

Same here. I posted several threads ago that I don’t want a player to come to NY if they really don’t want to be here. Maybe it’s my Yankees Fan arrogance, but for the life of me, I can’t understand why a MLB player *wouldn’t* want to be a Yankee. CC should be jumping at the bit to put on the pinstripes. Again, I don’t get it.

Some players get it. Look at Jeff Nelson. The guy asked to sign with us a for a day just so that he could RETIRE as a Yankee. Well, you know what they say? Different strokes for different folks.

  56. ray (sox fan)

“Pedroia can turn complacent like Cano did.”

This next year Pedroia may not have the same numbers as last year, and every player is vulnerable to injury. With that being said I would bet my life pension and anything else that Pedroia will not become complacent. That isn’t happening.

  57. Paulie

Just because Pedroia won the MVP doesn’t make it a steal

Yes, it does. It makes it a great deal, just as it did when it was Cano, and he wasn’t the MVP.

Should we list the average salaries of MVP’s in the past ten years to prove how unintelligent this statement is? Or maybe we should go by age v. MVP awards. Or maybe just use good old fashioned statistics to prove how good this deal is?
    Which do you prefer?

  58. mel

    Mad,

Basically any pitcher. I love the idea of a rotation full of young Andy Pettittes. They’ve proven themselves, that they can pitch in the AL East and playoffs. Andy Pettitte in his young prime over guys like RJ, Zito (lol), even CC for me. That’s why it’s important to keep our good young starters. Why trade them away when they’re still cost-controlled?

I know I’m just dreaming, but people always look at Minny, Oakland, the Braves who won with young pitchers and say, “why can’t we have good, young pitchers?” Well, it’s because they all get traded away…for dinosaurs.

  59. Paulie

    Exactly, Laura.

I have no interest in CC at this point. He gets pounded by good teams, he cost a freaking boat load, and I don’t think Brian Cashman has another one of these signings left in his “get out of jail free” savings account.
Plus, I don’t think he wants to be here. He’s waiting for any reason whatsoever to not come here.

  60. S.o.S.

This has to be one of the most boring offseasons i can remember.

Does anyone else think we should have went after Vasquez for a 4th or 5th starter?

I hope the red sox know that at 32 years old. Dustin will not be able to hit a high pitch. He will have shrunk another 4 to 5 inches. Taking him from hobbit to elf. Age does that to you. The good news for the sox is he will have his jersey dirtier with more diving plays at second.

  61. Laura - The Hot Stove is Stone cold!

“This next year Pedroia may not have the same numbers as last year, and every player is vulnerable to injury. With that being said I would bet my life pension and anything else that Pedroia will not become complacent. That isn’t happening.”

I agree. Even more reason that he should have demanded more money from Theo. All things considered, that contract was a steal for BOS. Lord knows that I hate everything that is BOS (including the Hobbitt), but the guy deserved a better contract than that.

  62. Paulie

Laura, being in NY doesn’t carry the same weight as it used to. His chances of winning are just as good elsewhere as they are here, and his compensatory money from endorsements et. all are just as good near LA as they are here as well.
Why put up with the press on a third place team, who’s best stars are aging players, and an always-on-the-hotseat manager(s) and front office? Oh, and a new owner?

It doesn’t make sense for him.

  63. mel

Oh, and pitching is so nilly-willy, that you never know what’s going to happen. I’d rather lose one of our young pitchers who makes $400K go down with injury, than a Pavano or Jaret Wright who make $10M.

  64. Paulie

Of course, all that in the belief that he’s not in it for the huge payout, and is happy taking less money, which I’m not quite sure is the case.

I can see us getting him, and Boston and LAA ripping him apart for the next five years, you know, like they already do.
Or him flaming out in the playoffs, like he’s been known to do.
That would be AWESOME to have to go through again.

    No thanks.

  65. Laura - The Hot Stove is Stone cold!

“He’s waiting for any reason whatsoever to not come here.”

I think he’s waiting, hoping and praying that one of the CA teams comes at least mildly close to our offer. And I think he should. He should field all offers and take the one that he wants the most. While I find this “I want to play close to my home” argument ridiculous, if this is something that is *SO* important to him, he should pursue it. And we should look elsewhere for our pitching needs.

  66. Paulie

rather lose one of our young pitchers who makes $400K go down with injury..

Well, take you’re pick. They’ve all shown they’re fully capable of doing at least that.

  67. Paulie

    Exactly.
I’d rather take that money and spend it on four mediocre pitchers and hope for the best. Maybe someone steps up when they’re supposed to. We know CC doesn’t do that. Ask Cleveland ALCS. Ask the Brewers in the NLCS.
He gets you there, then dies.

  68. Laura - The Hot Stove is Stone cold!

“Laura, being in NY doesn’t carry the same weight as it used to. His chances of winning are just as good elsewhere as they are here, and his compensatory money from endorsements et. all are just as good near LA as they are here as well.

It doesn’t make sense for him.”

In my opinion (which I’m sure is colored by my Yankee fan arrogance), I think winning a championship as a Yankee is better than winning one as a Milwaukee Brewer or a Florida Marlin.

  69. raymagnetic

    Paulie,

I’m typing slower so maybe you can try to overstand what I’m saying.

Based on Pedroias numbers and what other similar players have done the deal is not a steal regardless of winning the MVP award.

Jeter or Manny have NEVER won the MVP award and have had multiple seasons putting up numbers better than Pedroia.

Cano had 2 seasons equal to Pedroia’s and didn’t win an MVP award. That’s why I said compare the stats and then talk about the deal. The fact that Pedroia won an MVP award doesn’t make his numbers any better.

Is that slow enough and intelligent enough for you to understand what I’m saying now?

    Fredo,

You’re right Pedroia hasn’t been in the league for three years, so compare their numbers the first 2 years. Better for you now?
Fredo you make me laugh I must say. You once said that all I do is pooh pooh on what other posters say, but pots really shouldn’t call kettles black, if you get my drift. I enjoy it though to be honest with you, so keep up the good work.

  70. Paulie

In my opinion (which I’m sure is colored by my Yankee fan arrogance

    Yep.
    haahahaha.

Winning a championship as a Yankee is commonplace (well, not lately).
Winning one as Brewer or Angel is a big freaking deal. Statues are erected at ballparks for less.
Imagine if the Brewers had won this year..CC would have been an iconic figure of immeasurable proportions in the city of Milwaukee.
Here? Eh, he did what they pay him to do, or what he was supposed to do.

  71. ray (sox fan)

“I agree. Even more reason that he should have demanded more money from Theo. All things considered, that contract was a steal for BOS.”

Laura, I just think that Pedroia is happy playing in Boston and so whether it is foolish or not he is content to make six million a year.

I will readily admit that playing in Boston is not desirable for everyone. Clearly Manny didn’t like it there.

However, the stereotype that all players leave Boston angry is not true. Derek Lowe has said his first preference is to go back to Boston. Kevin Millar obviously enjoyed his time in Boston, and people like Bronson Arroyo have communicated the same thing.

I can appreciate your ambivalence towards CC right now. But if you signs with you guys and wins 20 games next year I would bet most Yankee fan’s ambivalence will fade some.

  72. pat

Rating deals before they play out is a waste of time.

The argument could be made that Pedroia had a career year in 2008 while Cano has yet to show his full potential. The argument could also be made that the effort Pedroia contributes to a team is more valuable than the untapped natural talent Cano possesses. A circular debate only answered by time.

  73. Paulie

Ray, because you’re typing slower doesn’t make your argument any less stupid, man. In fact, it just makes you seem stupider for insinuating that other folks can’t understand your very eloquent argument.
But, if typing slower makes you feel better about what you’re saying, by all means, please take longer to post next time.

He’s not getting paid because of the MVP award: he’s getting paid because he’s a great player, and he signed for much less than what he could have gotten through arbitration or free agency. He gave up a couple free agent years, on his own accord and probably at a cost to his own bank account, to take less to play for the Red Sox.
That equals a good damn deal for Boston, and you’re the only guy on who doesn’t think so.
His deal is awesome; Cano’s deal is equally as good. The only difference is, in reality, I’m comparing the stats of two players who in several categories are close, and in some, aren’t on the same planet. You’re asking us to project what will happen to Pedroia in his third year (when Cano fell off the earth, was benched, and magically changed his stance and played well for three weeks to make us forget about the first five months of crap), when we both know that if we listened to your “predictions” we’d all look as stupid as you sometimes.
I can look up some of them if you’d like.
In fact, that sounds like fun.
Cano had some comperable numbers, and we can all cherry-pick whatever stat we wish to post to support our “arguments”, but in the end, one guy is ROY and MVP and signed for a lot less than he could have demanded, which even in your slow typing world, is a good deal.
A darn good one. Get over it.

  74. playballnyy

looks like its time for a iphone vs blackberry poll

I had the choice between iphone and curve back September since I was staying with AT & T…. three things did it for me…touchscreen over tiny keys, screen size for video watching on iphone, and internet browsing on iphone is 20 times better then on the curve. The added bonus is that the iphone looks and feels way cooler than the blackberry. THIS IS NO COMMENT ON THE NEW STORM, HAVE NOT RESEARCHED THAT ONE AT ALL –but the word on the street is that its bigger and slower than the iphone.

    BOTTOM LINE
    Yankees = iphone
    Red Sox = Blackberry

  75. pat

Pedroia’s deal is one of the 4 biggest non-arbitration contracts given (Hanley, David Wright and Ryan Braun got the others)

    Here’s the deal:

    2009 $1.5 million
    2010 $3.5 million
    2011 $5.5 million
    2012 $8 million
    2013 $10 million
    2014 $10 million
2015 $11 million option that becomes $13 million with another MVP win.

Blog raises the question of what the Sox do now with Papelbon and Youkilis who are both arbitration eligible.

Cano’s deal is equally as good. The only difference is, in reality, I’m comparing the stats of two players who in several categories are close, and in some, aren’t on the same planet. You’re asking us to project what will happen to Pedroia in his third year (when Cano fell off the earth, was benched, and magically changed his stance and played well for three weeks to make us forget about the first five months of crap),

    ———————————————————–

In Cano’s third year, he hit .303 with 19 homers and 97 RBI.
This was his 4th year. As far a 3 weeks ofhitting and 5 months of crap, perhaps you’d better look again. After 1 May, he hit .300. Only april pulled his numbers down. The 5 months also includes a 3 week period in august when he had a hand injury…a deep bone bruise to the base of his thumb on the right hand. That cost him a lot more on his numbers.

After two years, it’s a little difficult to swallow when somebody calls Pedroia or any other player “great”. How about giving him and Cano time before hanging the “great and crap” tags on them?

    mel,

I can buy that. Raising the farmhands is a great idea.

I will say, however, that in NY, a blend of the two is ideal. What I mean is, I think the Yankees should hold on to Joba (duh) and not yet give up on Hughes, but take a guy like Kennedy and package him for another need while bringing back Pettitte and signing CC (if possible).

I think a blend is ideal.

Get “Say Who” and the “Google Search”

Both voice activated, cool part about the Google one? You only press one button and then put the phone up to your ear and say “Lohud Yankees Blog” and it brings you right to the link.

Make sure you jailbreak it so you can get some useful apps that Apple decided wouldn’t help anyone.
