Cashman gets it started in Vegas

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Dec 07, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

In a fortunate bit of serendipity, my cab pulled up to the Bellagio at the same the Yankees were gathering to go out for dinner.

My keen news sense told me to try and ask Brian Cashman a question or two. But he had his phone pressed against his ear from the moment he walked outside until he stepped into the cab. But one team official said that Cashman “was able to get some business done.”

That likely means he met with somebody. I haven’t been able to confirm it yet, but it could well have been CC Sabathia.

I did notice that Cashman was wearing one of his World Series rings. It’s unusual for Cashman to wear one of the paperweight-sized rings. Perhaps he was trying to impress somebody.

So while I didn’t get a chance to talk to Cashman, I did snap this photo of him and Joe Girardi heading for their cab. I’m going to go stakeout the lobby now to try and get him when he returns.

UPDATE, 11:27 p.m.: Kenny Williams must get paid by the trade. He apparently is sending Jermaine Dye to the Red and Homer Bailey. Seems like a good deal for Cincy. Bailey was a can’t-miss pitching prospect who so far has missed and reportedly has a rotten attitude.

UPDATE, 12:35 a.m.: Both teams deny the trade.

Maybe he was telling Carl Pavano how exhausting it had been to have him on the team.

  2. myrtlebeachfan December 7th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

    Haha.

    Cashman. He is the man.

  3. Paul V December 7th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

You the man, Peter. It’s 20 degrees in downtown manhattan right now. Enjoy the Strip.

  4. CanIGetAMooseCall December 7th, 2008 at 11:21 pm

Keep hustling, Pete. We’re all expecting you to break a few stories out there there this week. We know you’ll do it!

Peter, is the man! Great work, theres a future for you with TMZ :)

  6. Buddy Biancalana December 7th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

Yeah, Pete. You are awesome, love the stakeout report.

  7. Al from BK( Where in the world is Carsten Charles Sabathia?) December 7th, 2008 at 11:27 pm

    “get some business done”

I guess that means that CC told him to shove it when Girardi brought up the “no candy” edict.

  8. Nick in SF December 7th, 2008 at 11:29 pm

Aw man, this post is making me more bummed out that Cal isn’t going to the Las Vegas Bowl.

  9. Moneyball December 7th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

Hey Pete- Little non-yankee news for you. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are headed to the Papajohns.com bowl against NC State. Four bowl trips in a row for RU, who would have thought this would be real ten years ago?

When you asked Girardi a question, did he recognize you, Pete?

  12. mel December 7th, 2008 at 11:37 pm

I heard they had a fight. Alex didn’t like that Madonna has a better body than him and she didn’t like that Alex’s lips were fuller.

  13. Nick in SF December 7th, 2008 at 11:39 pm

Forgive me if I missed it, but was it ever mentioned on this blog (besides by me in the previous thread) that CC just won the 2008 Warren Spahn Award as the best left-handed pitcher in the majors for the second straight year?

    I wonder if he’s available.

  14. Al from BK( Where in the world is Carsten Charles Sabathia?) December 7th, 2008 at 11:39 pm

Wow trading Dye. The White Sox are totally rebuilding. They are in a better situation than us however having studs like Danks and Floyd to build around. Maybe Bailey needs a change of scenery?

  15. Eric December 7th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

There’s an article on MLB.com saying Walt Jocketty denied the trade, for whatever that’s worth.

things could be worse we could be Cubs fans. According to the times and wsj tribune co is about to file for bankruptcy. Theyvhope to have a new owner in plane by spring training but don’t see the team spending much money now.

Pete you stakeout report sounds like a paparazzi quote stalking the lobby of a hotel not sure you thought that would be at the top of the list of things to do as a beat writer.

Why go outside the hotel for dinner unless you are meeting someone the bellagio has really good restaurants there so maybe it is round 2 of cc meets this time with joe g or maybe they are going to big g for dinner to remind them why they don’t want him back

  31. Nick in SF December 8th, 2008 at 12:09 am

Brandon, you were called out by multiple folks in the previous thread!

  32. george December 8th, 2008 at 12:13 am

Homer Bailey is 22. Dye’s 34. the Reds aren’t exactly 1 player away from being a contender, so what’s the strategy behind that trade?

  33. Adam December 8th, 2008 at 12:13 am

How is that a good trade for the Reds? It’d be like if the Yankees traded Phil Hughes for 1 year of an over the hill RF, but only if the Yankees were terrible and had no chance of contending and should be looking towards the future.

  37. thisguy December 8th, 2008 at 12:26 am

cc doesnt want to be a yankee…it is quite clear he wants to play in the nl and on the west coast. he has also been terrible in the playoffs.

…so now you have to wonder does he care for pressure much?…

with all of these questions, the reason we all want to sign cc is because the yanks need an ace and he is the only one available. he is also entering his prime, turning 28 i believe.

but if anyone doesnt have questions about cc and this it is gunna be a given that he will be awesome in both the regular season and playoffs if the yanks do sign him, it isnt. im not talking about his health, im talking about his head.

with all that said, we have to sign him to a 6 year deal.

  38. PAT M December 8th, 2008 at 12:28 am

Wonder what the 2009 baseball futures look like now as opposed to a week from now…..Maybe Pete can add a little insight to this being that he’s in Sin City….

I understand not wanting to get into a long back and forth, but dropping it altogether leaves the impression that you stand by what you said about John in Ohio, which of course is within your rights. But the accusation you made didn’t seem warranted based just on what he said, and I still don’t get how it would apply to him and not to several other people, including Pete Abe.

  45. Phil Parcells December 8th, 2008 at 1:25 am

    Viva Las Vegas

    How’s the eye candy, Pete?

“I understand not wanting to get into a long back and forth, but dropping it altogether leaves the impression that you stand by what you said about John in Ohio, which of course is within your rights. But the accusation you made didn’t seem warranted based just on what he said, and I still don’t get how it would apply to him and not to several other people, including Pete Abe.”

What angers me is how people take it as a superiority type of thing and don’t understand what this is about. It’s too difficult to explain because someone not familiar w/ the situation is going to say but if I’m Irish, if I’m Italian or European, it’s not the same thing.

Most people think that he is bailing, this is him acknowledging to his family and friends that he is also Domincan. It means alot to those kids in D.R., it means alot, I mean alot, when I say alot I mean ALOT (maybe more than I’m even stating) for years kids/young adults/old adults in D.R. kept hearing Arod was a fake dominican because rather than acknowledge his existance as one he rather become a product and a slogan in the states. Ask yourself, no put yourself in his shoes… his mom is Dominican, his dad is Dominican, most of his family is Dominican and 8 or 12 yrs. from now when he gets recognition as a latino and doesn’t do this what part of his adult life has he acknowledge being a latino ? The WS Latino Legends thing on the field ceremony that he went to alot of people felt sucker punched watching all those latino HOF on the field and having Arod called out as a dominican next to guys like Manny who reps it everytime, Vlad, Carew, Marichal… this ? what A-Rod is about to do is going to clean the slate w/ him and Dominicans, because to us we look at Arod and after this we can say “damn he took all that heat for us”, the U.S. had him one year and lets be honest not many of you care about the WBC as deeply, D.R. gets him it’s going to be bigger than just baseball, it’s going to mean something much much much special, win or lose we’re never gonna forget what he’s about to do. I can tell you right now I have family members that are going to cry watching him come out in a Dominican jersey, we never thought we’d live to see this but finally we will get to see it, kids will get to see it, most of them will cry too, he’s our MJ, Manny is like Bird, Papi is like Shaq, Arod is our MJ too many of the Dominican people, you know Manny is that damn good, but Alex to us win or lose is the best player in baseball and it’s just going to be that special for us, I can just imagine the tickets that some Dominican people are trying to get just watch him in a Dominican jersey. This isn’t any slap to the face, it’s acknowleging his other side.

  47. Nick in SF December 8th, 2008 at 1:48 am

Thanks for all that, and I think I understand better why this will mean a lot to people in the DR and from the DR. But that still doesn’t explain why you think what John in Ohio said sounded bigoted, which is what a few of us were wondering.

  48. raymagnetic December 8th, 2008 at 1:49 am

    Brandon,

That long explanation has nothing to do with you calling John a “biggot”.

What John said wasn’t racist or bigoted in any way but you called him a “biggot”.

That’s what Nick in SF is talking about. Do you really think that John is a “biggot” based on what he said? Who cares who Alex plays for in an exhibition event?

  49. mel December 8th, 2008 at 1:55 am

    Brandon,

You usually say some goofy things. But that soliloquy was quite moving.

The only thing that bothers me is that Dominicans thought of Alex as a fake Dominican? Until this week?

But anyway, it does put things in perspective and most of us support Alex’s right to do as he pleases.

  50. mel December 8th, 2008 at 1:59 am

And that was quite a long back. Or was that the fourth? ;)

Update on arbitrations and K-rod meet with the Minaya. I wonder if O told K-rod that Wooly would not be a problem.

  51. PAT M December 8th, 2008 at 2:01 am

I went back and re-read the posting….For the love of me, I cannot understand the racist / biggot comment at all…..I did see any harm in what John From Ohio was saying, didn;t really understand his point all that well either…..Maybe it’s just better to let it slide on the eve of what I hope to be a wonderful week for the Yankee faithful…….Chark it up to Hot Stove cabin fever…..And let’s move on…..

  52. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" December 8th, 2008 at 2:02 am

You ever checked the definition of biggot ?

(A very close minded person.) I didn’t refer to him as a racist I think what I said was to this quote

“So, it’s always been his mother’s “dream” that he play for the Dominican team? Yeah, sure.”

John doesn’t know any of this, he’s taking a quote and turning it into a life commitment. Alex’s mom/family have always wanted to see him represent D.R. in baseball that isn’t made up.

He says the stupidest stuff. It’s always superlatives with this guy. Just say “My Mom thought it would be cool for me to play for the Domincan team, so I’m gonna do it for her.”

    “Nobody cares, A-Rod.

    Great player. Social moron.”

First apparently people do care because we wouldn’t be talking about this.

Second in reviewing what he said I want to apologize to John I didn’t mean it in a racist way, I meant it w/ him having a close mind on his quote. I’ve read alot of posts the last couple of days about this, some damn near racist, I jumped the wrong guy on his quote. Unfortunately John isn’t here so I will make sure next time he posts to personally extend an apology.

  53. mel December 8th, 2008 at 2:03 am

    PAT M,

It’s been bizarre. Yankee fan crime on Yankee fan. Regulars calling other regulars names. Too many spats.

Brian, ray (sox fan), and youk get treated better here. Weird.

  54. Nick in SF December 8th, 2008 at 2:11 am

“You ever checked the definition of biggot?”

Did you ever check the spelling of it?

  58. Joey's Poodle December 8th, 2008 at 9:18 am

Brandon you’re right that bigot means one of narrow, intolerant opinions rather than racist.

Did you know that it’s derivation is from the Spanish, “bigote” which once referred to a man with a mustache meaning a man of spirit and obstinate opinions???

Now it is often used to refer to anyone who is narrow and prejudiced in their opinions. The reference is not specifically to racial or ethnic prejudice, but it’s not hard to see someone applying it to whatever sort of intolerance or prejudice he’s concerned with.

  59. Joey's Poodle December 8th, 2008 at 9:20 am

    Nick in SF,

What was really nice after all that distasteful wrangling, though, was your effort to bring a decent resolution — and it worked!

    Congratulations. What a good netizen!

  60. Chris from NJ December 8th, 2008 at 9:24 am

I am starting to think that CC doesn’t want to pitch in NY, and Cash should pull the offer. We can sign two FA starters for the money we wanted to give CC.

You can sign Pettitte and Burnett for ~25mil a year (i think Sabathia was going to get 23-24) and let Hughes take the #5 spot.

There should be room in the budget to sign a bat if you want to empty the coffers for Tex. Swisher can become a corner outfielder in 2010 when Matsui and Damon’s contracts are up.
