The Mets have a funny way of choosing their closer. They don’t base it on stats, health, intangibles, etc, they base it on who will accept their offer first.

A lot of folks in my office are Mets fans, I hope they sign Hoffman so I can tease them all. I honestly think K-Rod (should it be changed to fly ball-rod now?) would be a good fit for the mets. Him and Reyes both have a flair for the dramatic, they might develop some chemistry.

When evaluating what TYPE (A or B) a FA catcher is, I don’t believe they even look at offense. I’ve watched Tek for many years and the guy is an absolute stud at blocking the plate, still is a very good defensive catcher, and had a rep for calling a good game. He is good for a .225 CS%. This is 75% of a catchers game.

Conversely, Po is an offensive stud, but stinks at blocking the plate, appears to be average at D, and there are questions as to how he calls a game. His CS% looks to be a bit around .275%.,,, if his shoulder is OK.

Granted, Po is a far better all-around C, but Tek still has value, especially for a young staff. There are also rumors that Tek was ailing most of last year, and it effected his offense.

I will agree that he is not worth $10m. He either has a deal with the Sox, or he’s looking for a 2 or 3 year contract. He has averaged a .730 ish OPS over the last 3 years, which still puts him in the top 40% offensively.

I’m guessing he gets 2/$16m from the Sox?

quality catching might be one of the thinnest commodities in baseball. veritek has a great reputation for handling a pitching staff. with the increased emphasis on pitching nowadays, he can surely get a 2 yr deal maybe 3. maybe for less aav, but that might appeal to veritek. in any case, if boras thinks there’s a market for him, then there probably is.

Either way, he doesnt even deserve half of 11 mil and he thinks he can do better than that? And people thought the market was going to be rough for these guys this year? yea right with varitek wanting more than 11 mil next season and lowe asking for 5 years and 90 million. If anything its still going up. Renteria did pretty well for himself too and he was garbage last year. Garland apparently thinks he can make more than 14 mil after posting the worst season of his career – garland and varitek may end up getting a longer deal but i dont think either one of them will get a multiyear contract and an average annual salary rivaling what they would have made in arbitration. Both of them were pretty horrendous. I guess garland is a shoe-in for around 200 innings but they could be 200 very long innings for some team.

At this point I’m really really really hoping we sign Sheets within the next 10 days and then wait to hear from CC in early/mid January. Man, I really hope Ca$hman can sign Sheets and CC! I’d love our rotation. CC, Wang, Sheets, Joba, Hughes//or//Pettitte. You’d be able to argue our #1-4 all have ace stuff and Hughes also has that aspiration so we’d have a monster rotation built both for now and the future. I understand the concerns about Sheet’s health history, and I certainly dont want another Pavano, but I think he’s the smartest target for the Yankees outside of CC on the pitching market. I can honestly say I dont mind taking a 3 or 4 year contract chance on a guy with ace ability. Please Ca$hman make this happen!!!!!!!!!

So cash talked to CC or Genske – thats good but do we actually get to hear what they said at some point tonight? It could have been any where in the range from “Hell no Im not going to no yankees – Cali is my town and thats where I want to be” to “Of course Mr. Cashman, I will sign on the dotted line tomorrow and I cant wait to see how those pinstripes look on me, I hear they are very slimming” to anything in between,
