Maddux announcing his retirement

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Dec 08, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Scott Boras is at the podium in the press room announcing the retirement of Greg Maddux. We’ve all encircled the stage waiting to ask Scott about his clients not named Greg Maddux.

Meanwhile, this is the first time the Winter Meetings media workroom is located near the wedding chapel and the collection of Georgia O’Keeffe paintings. We’re a long, long way from Nashville.

Cool story Pete. Tell Boras to get Tex signed by LA so CC runs out of options.

  2. Bronx Jeers December 8th, 2008 at 2:34 pm

    Ugh.

Who would want Scott Boras announing their retirement?

  3. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" December 8th, 2008 at 2:35 pm

And hurry up on that !

  4. islesfan December 8th, 2008 at 2:44 pm

There’s also no Spearmint Rhino in Nashville. I highly recommend going if you have the chance Peter. Grab Murti and a couple other guys and call them to send a limo for the group. Free transportation and no cover. If the other guys are willing to split a bottle, the VIP area in the back is the best spot in the joint.

  5. pat December 8th, 2008 at 2:47 pm

“Who would want Scott Boras announing their retirement?”

Anyone who is able to retire in their 40′s because of him.

    Very true.

From the other thread (well a little at the bottom)

But with the Cano talk, why!?!?! Cano’s TERRIBLE season was pretty similar to Kemps, Cano is better, SELL HIGH NOT LOW!!

  9. gayle December 8th, 2008 at 2:54 pm

This has nothing to do with Maddux and because of the winter meetings will get lost in the shuffle but nice opportunity to help out and get tickets

The New York Yankees announced today that they are partnering with Goya Foods on the 15th annual Yankees Food Drive, which will take place Thursday, December 11 between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at Gate 2 of the original Yankee Stadium (on 161st Street, west of River Avenue). Fans who plan to drive to the Stadium may pull up to Gate 2 and drop off their donation. Should excessive congestion necessitate formal parking, fans may do so in Lot 8, which is adjacent to the Stadium on 153rd Street. Parking will be validated in the Yankee Stadium Lobby.

Any fan bringing 25 pounds of non-perishable food or making a $25 donation will receive a voucher good for two grandstand or bleacher tickets to a Monday through Thursday, non-premium, April or May 2009 Yankees home game at the new Yankee Stadium.

Goya Foods will match all donations of Goya Foods products pound-for-pound, guaranteeing a contribution of 20,000 pounds of Goya Foods products. Please note that a substantial portion of Goya Foods’ donation will be rice. As a result, fans are strongly encouraged to donate other types of Goya Foods canned goods, such as tomato sauce, vegetables, meats (ham, chicken, beef, tuna, salmon) or dry goods such as oatmeal and pasta.

All collected food will be distributed throughout the Bronx to those in need.

Maddux had 355 wins and the most he ever made in a season in last season at 14.75 mil.

Imagine him in his prime being a FA today?

WHY DON’T WE JUST GIVE CC A BLANK CHECK ?

  12. yanksfanmc December 8th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

CC probably still wouldnt sign if he was given a blank check. Just another example of a married man whose wife wears the pants in the family.

  13. Knudson December 8th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

    GB 7,

My comments are not pilfered from Cliff Notes. They are well embedded following many a year of usage in the legal field of battle.

  14. Al from BK( Time to move on, go get Tex Cash!) December 8th, 2008 at 3:02 pm

“WHY DON’T WE JUST GIVE CC A BLANK CHECK ?”

Its not about that He wants to play in California, he doesn’t want more money.

  15. ROCKY December 8th, 2008 at 3:02 pm

WOMEN STILL WEAR THE PANTS WHEN YOU MAKE THAT KIND OF DOUGH ?

  16. Knudson December 8th, 2008 at 3:04 pm

Were Cashman to consummate a Kemp for Cano transaction, his competence surely should come into question; as well as anyone within the organization who is in concurrence.

What are your thoughts, Green Beret 7?

  17. GreenBeret7 December 8th, 2008 at 3:04 pm

Since John Smoltz wasn’t offered arbitration by the Braves, should the Yanks offer him a deal to either start or set up for Rivera?

  18. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes December 8th, 2008 at 3:05 pm

What people need to realize is that the Angels COULD offer CC what we are currently offering and he is probably waiting to see what happens there, annoying though it is.

I think this highlights his desire to play in the West.

  19. ROCKY December 8th, 2008 at 3:06 pm

“Since John Smoltz wasn’t offered arbitration by the Braves, should the Yanks offer him a deal to either start or set up for Rivera?”

What’s his injury status? Sounds like he’s going to re-up with the Braves anyway, but he’d be a luxury item for the Yamkees.

  23. Al from BK( Time to move on, go get Tex Cash!) December 8th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

“CC probably still wouldnt sign if he was given a blank check. Just another example of a married man whose wife wears the pants in the family.”

“Another is that his wife, Amber, is encouraging him to wait for an offer from a West Coast team that may not be coming – that is, unless the Bay Area product wants to work cheap for the Giants.”

Your theory is confirmed. Can it be Tex time now?

  24. TurnTwo December 8th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

    “What’s his injury status?”

yeah, i was under the impression he was going to be out for a good part of the early 2009 season with that labrum tear.

  25. Bronx Jeers December 8th, 2008 at 3:11 pm

Hang in there Al from BK!

Remember Yogi’s words. Or Lenny Kravitz. Whichever you prefer.

I’m telling you CC’s just waiting for a 130 mil offer to see if the Yanks go to 150 mil.

  26. Fredo Corleone December 8th, 2008 at 3:11 pm

Speaking of arbitration, only 2 of 24 ended up accepting. Hindsight is always 20/20 of course, but you have wonder if Cashman didn’t misread things a litte so far as arbitration goes.

  27. jack December 8th, 2008 at 3:12 pm

    what is going on?

where is CC? why hasn’t CC been signed?

  28. Patrick December 8th, 2008 at 3:12 pm

“MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick talked to Ned Colletti, who said he hasn’t talked to the Yankees yet. ”

Looks like the renewed Cano rumors are false.

  29. Knudson December 8th, 2008 at 3:12 pm

I would like to believe Mr. Gurnick is correct. http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/ar.....rId=rss_la

This silliness (Cano for Kemp) should be put to rest once and for all.

    Green Beret 7,

    What are your thoughts?

  30. Gabagoo December 8th, 2008 at 3:12 pm

did anyone mention the Reggie Jackson jioned Giradi and Cashman in the meeting, They proubly wanted him to tell CC that NY aint bad Just Like how Reggie love California and wasnt sold on NY but look what ended up happening

  31. saucy December 8th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

    GB and Fredo-

Coming off some shoulder surgery, deciding if he wants to pitch again or retire. Yes I would offer him a deal. Maddux might be a 350 game winner, but Smoltz, even Maddux would say, has better “stuff.” Also he’s a better golfer!!

    ————————————————————

He made a successful rehab appearance from the mound about 3 days ago. Not much info, but the Braves were encouraged and he’s been throwing for a month.

I just tossed this yp there to get away from the same arguements/subjects.

    http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/.....p?c_id=atl

  34. CB December 8th, 2008 at 3:19 pm

I think the reports on Smoltz are pretty encouraging. He’s been throwing off a mound for about a month and throwing all of his pitches.

I think I saw somewhere that Bobby Cox saw him throw and liked what he saw.

I think they expect he’ll be able to come back fairly early.

  35. ariel December 8th, 2008 at 3:19 pm

I would like to believe that if nothing is consummated by the end of the meetings Cashman will give CC a short-fuse drop-dead date, so that the Yankees’ alternative pursuits do not fall by the wayside. As I have stated previously, we should not be held hostage as the 2009 season could well be in the balance. At times you have to conclude that matters are not working out the way you would like, and, therefore, cut the cord before it is too late. Hopefully, Cashman is wise enough to understand and implement this rather obvious strategy.

Maybe Pete will get married while in Vegas?

  37. Vito December 8th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

No way Smoltz leaves the Braves. Yanks tried a few years back when he was still in his prime and he stayed.

  38. Yankee Trader December 8th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Plus Smoltz has been throwing for over a month, and threw for the first time 3 days ago off a mound for Bobby Cox, who was impressed, using all his pitches-fastball, breaking, split finger, and changeups. If Smoltz isea healthy, even at age-41, he can be better than Plan B or C for the Yankees.

“As I have stated previously, we should not be held hostage as the 2009 season could well be in the balance”

Only ones who can hold the Yankees hostage are the Yankees themselves.

  42. CB December 8th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

“Speaking of arbitration, only 2 of 24 ended up accepting. Hindsight is always 20/20 of course, but you have wonder if Cashman didn’t misread things a litte so far as arbitration goes.”

    Fredo,

This could very well be a good example of selection bias.

All of the players most likely to accept arbitration (e.g. andy pettitte) weren’t offerred it to begin with.

The only players left in the pool who were offered arbitration were ones that were systematically less likely to accept the offer.

The teams active evaluation of the risk of a player accepting adds a big confounding effect here.

Can’t conclude much about those not offered arbitration from the ones who were offered arbitration and declined.

They are likely two systematically different groups of players who differ by type.

  44. Nick in SF December 8th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Al, for your mental health, you should stop paying attention to the Yankees until CC is signed.

  45. Yankee Trader December 8th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Vito- If the Braves sign Burnett, with Vasquez and salary increases, they might not give Smoltz a contract. Of course, that’s a big IF!!!

    LOL Doreen.
We better get access to a live video feed of the wedding. :)

  47. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes December 8th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

    Bronx Jeers,

I don’t think CC would need to wait to be offered 130 from another team to get 150 from the yankees.

He can get 150 from the yankees, but it would have to be CC approaching them and saying if you give me 150 over six we can do this.

but I do agree that if something isn’t figured out relatively quickly, the yankees need to start taking care of other needs and put CC on the back burner, leave the offer in place.

  48. Wave Your Hat December 8th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

“The only players left in the pool who were offered arbitration were ones that were systematically less likely to accept the offer.”

We don’t know that. You’re reasoning backwards. That’s not to say you aren’t right.

Does anyone know what the arbitration acceptance rate has been in previous years? That would be a useful indicator.

  49. S.A.- CC Watch 2008: Making some Yankee fans go bonkers December 8th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

pat-LOL Who needs a wedding photographer anyway? Sketches are good enough. :P

Though if there is wedding cake-keep CC away

  50. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes December 8th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

as far as abreu and pettitte go, i am thankful they weren’t offered arbitration. if both accepted we would have been paying far too much for their services.

    CB, GB-7, and all-

If Manny signs with the Dodgers, they have him in LF, untradeable Jones in CF, Andre Ethier in RF and Pierre[ also difficult to trade] sitting on the bench. Do they bench Jones in favor of Kemp? What would it take to get 26 y.o. Ethier who was fantastic last year and hit >.400 in September plus hit with RISP. Kemp is not projected anyway, as the CF for the future if traded to the Yankees.

Would it still cost us Cano? Any interest there?
Also, any interest in Hong-Chi Kuo?

  53. ariel December 8th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

I would expect some “unnamed source” to leak some information as to what transpired at the watershed meeting. Did CC say:

“I want to come to NY, but, c’mon guys, let’s hear your best offer…nobody comes out of the box with all that’s in his pockets”; or

“I’m coming, but only if you give me a list of the best restaurants in town”; or

“I want my buddies with me, definitely Mike Cameron, that’s only a 10mm pop, and he’s certainly better than what you have out there. Also, I would like the fat guy, Prince (makes me look svelt) to tag along. If you can swing the kid, Ryan Braun, also, it’s a done deal. Is it possible you might move the franchise to Cal, north or south will do”? or

“You must be joking, I’m waiting for one of the Cal teams to ante-up….you are giving me a nice waterline…could you go a little bit higher so I’ll look like a real hero when I take a lesser number either in Cal or Milwaukee, which I do like and have developed good friends.

“If you sign Tex, that opens it up for Arte to make me an offer and I can resume construction on the property I purchased in southern Cal. Why don’t you do that as the Mrs. simply does not want to live in NY.”

I think the Dodgers just turned down a trade that included Kuo. Not positive, though. Jones and Oierre have little to no value to anybody. As far as Jones, goes, they may see what he does in the spring. He was up close 260 pounds last year. He’s starting to look like Carlos Lee.

What are your thoughts, Green Beret 7?

    Same as everybody else:

Knudson loves to depict himself as the type of individual who has partaken in a lifelong campaign to fully incorporate the use of the thesaurus while writing casually on Yankee blogs; such people are often pompous and unliked by anyone not indulging in the same annoying trends.

Plus, your statement reads better if you say “surely, his competence…”
And in most instances, a comma and conjuction makes the sentence easier flowing, and more eye-friendly.

But, I’m sure that wasn’t your purpose.

  56. Vito December 8th, 2008 at 3:49 pm

    Yankee Trader,
Smoltz has been a Brave 20 years now and they still need starters even if they land Burnett. He will retire or pitch in Atlanta
