No meeting scheduled regarding Pettitte

Peter Abraham
December
8

Brian Cashman does not have any meetings set up this week with the Hendricks Brothers, who represent Andy Pettitte. “But we certainly could meet,” he said.

Cashman said he would like to have Pettitte back and hopes a deal can be struck.

Cashman said his “preferred route” to find starting pitchers is free agency. He said that in terms of starters, the trade market is very quiet as far as the Yankees are concerned.

Wow, with so much great coverage, this has become almost a live blog!

  2. Vincent

He is going to have to take less money or he isn’t coming back. Shame.

  3. Sid_Rissi

    Pete,
Any news on the Ben Sheets meeting?

  4. Nick in SF

I’m afraid to comment because Pete will have a new post up before I can hit ’submit’.

  5. S.A.- CC Watch 2008: Making some Yankee fans go bonkers

Pete you are a blogging machine tonight.

  6. Bob

I feel bad for Andy. He made it known he wants to come back but the Yankees are making him feel like he is Plan C or D

  7. andrew

i read on mlbtraderumors that cashman said Nick Punto is on the radar, any news on that?

  8. Nick in SF

I don’t think Andy is Plan C or D, he’s just not priority A. But I think they could get a deal done pretty quickly if Pettitte would come down from $16 million.

  9. Al from BK( Pull the offer now! Go get AJ and Tex!)

Yanks should sign Andy, AJ and Tex and be done theres your off-season. Let CC go where he really wants to go and we get Tex to hit in front of A-Rod :)

  10. Weather Man

Punto is a nice little utility player, a Miguel Cairo type.

  11. Bob

Has Andy ever said he wanted $16M?? I don’t recall that being said or written. Pete??

  12. trade for peavy!

    this is getting good

  13. Joe Schmoe 2

How can you feel bad for him? He said he would comeback at a cheaper price, then the schmuck goes and reportedly turns down a $10M offer.

Oh, and Pete, I’d like to hear that audio. I’m curious to hear how confident Cashman is in his voice when he talks about CC.

This Dodger thing does have me a tad worried though.

  14. yankee 821

andy had a 4.4 ERA last year and had a 6 ERA after the all-star break and contributed to us reeling down the stretch, he didn’t come up big at all. he got paid $16 million and we had to cover him after the mitchell report.

he can wait, good job by cashman not making him a priority.

  15. Phil - 27 in '09

Bob, Andy’s agents indicated he didn’t want to take a pay cut.

Tex doesn’t solve the glaring rotation problem…he adds offense…but, as studies show, you can’t mash your way to a World Series victory.

CC may be asking these questions to drag this out for rather obvious reasons. It seems questons like “what it’s like to live and work in NY” could have been asked (and probably were) at the outset, and didn’t require a meeting to be called for that purpose. As I recall, Jeter stated he had a conversation with CC a few weeks ago and he did inquire along these lines. Seems like a stalling tactic when taken together with the Colletti comments.

  17. Nick in SF

Al, you are one of my favorites on this blog, but your angst-ridden back-and-forth comments on CC crack me up, like good comedic performance art.

  18. Arial

It doesn’t take a genius to conclude that CC is playing a waiting game to see if any West Coast team bids and how close that bid, if forthcoming, will be to the Yankee proposal.

  19. S.A.- CC Watch 2008: Making some Yankee fans go bonkers

I think tonight might be the night Jaws physically hurts Tony K. on MNF

  20. Laura - Moving on from CC

Pete is almost blogging too much. I can’t keep up.

  21. CB

One of the things that I’ve liked about this off season so far is the team has clearly identified what went wrong over the past few seasons and is now focused on fixing it.

Focusing on pitching is obvious front and center.

But they’re also working on improving the defense with Abreu and Giambi – perhaps their two worst fielding starters – both not returning.

A real source of weakness has been their bench. Cashman indicated today that they’re interested in Nick Punto.

I think a player like that would be a nice pick up as a utility guy.

Punto is a switch hitter and has literally played all over the diamong – SS, 3b, 2b, CF, LF, RF.

He doesn’t have any power but he can hit for average and he fields well. In particular, he plays a pretty good shortstop – the position most utility guys struggle most with. He’s played SS a lot. It would be great to have a legitimate back up SS to give Jeter a rest.

He’s a bit like Ryan Freel but not as good.

There’s a lot going on with the team – but getting a guy like Punto would be a good pickup in an area of need.

Things like that make me think that the team has a real plan this off season to address many of the areas that have been open sores the past several seasons.

  22. Jeff

The fact that CC told Colletti that he wanted to be a Dodger after meeting with us speaks volume. CC is just using us. I mean, who does that? He clearly told Colleti that he was ok with him telling this to reporters, so it’s not like he did it behind closed doors.

    Cashman cannot be this naive.

  23. pat

 Pete’s doling out info in small bits to keep the hysteria to a minimum.

  24. ZMAN7777

I can think of 16 million reasons not to sign Pettitte. Frankly, I wouldn’t go higher than $10 million. If the Yankees had any semblance of a starting staff, his name wouldn’t even be mentioned.

  25. Nick in SF

CC would never use Ned Colletti, would he?

  26. Bob

CC is getting a 9 figure deal regardless….if he REALLY made those comments to Coletti, then the Yankees should tell him their offer is now good until 12/31 and then they are pulling their offer. If he wants to leave money on the table, and possibly hurting leverage, that’s his problem. I do NOT want another Maddux situation though..

  27. Bronx Jeers

I’m afraid that Al from BK is no longer with us.

All that is left is Tony, the little boy that lives in his mouth and tells him things.

    REDRUM!

  28. Jeff NJ

not that it matters much, but I hear CC spoke to Coletti first and told him to make an offer. Then he spoke to Cash and asked about living in NY. He’s as good as signed, get used to it.

  29. Arial

    Pat,

I don’t think it’s hysteria. Many posters are offended by what is perceived as stalling tactics by CC, and the rather sophomoric comments of our General Manager.

  30. Phil - 27 in '09

    Who does that?

Every FA does that. I did it with my current employers…it is called leverage to get the compensation or deal you want.

  31. Yankee Trader

    Yankees interested in Nick Punto.

Good player,31 years old, switch hitter, batted .286, little power, but stole 15 bases in 21 tries and 336 at bats.
Also played every infield position but 1st and 3 games in center.

Pete- I’ve posted this 3 times in last 10 minutes and can’t keep up with you. Why don’t you comment see next blog??

  32. S.A.- CC Watch 2008: Making some Yankee fans go bonkers

Remember people, CC might be reading this blog-
Show the man some love and let’s remind him that pinstripes are slimming…not that the man needs to look slim or anything..because he has just a wonderful, studly body.
    Yup.

    :)

  33. CB

“The fact that CC told Colletti that he wanted to be a Dodger after meeting with us speaks volume. ”

That’s not a fact. It’s heresay. We have no idea what CC told Colletti or how he said it.

We only know what colletti said CC told him.

For all we know CC is telling all of the teams on the west coast that he wants to play for them.

Colletti might just be the only one to be discussing it.

Drawing inferences from a process in which leaked rumors and heresay are used for tactical purposes isn’t very useful at getting at the truth.

  34. WR packin heat

    man, why you people frekin?
the man said the meeting with cc went well.
he even asked for a second meeting.
now you’re all flipping over a remark he might have made to any owner he ran into in the hallway. “i sure would like to play for the tigers some day…” he practised it with his agent on the plane to vegas

  35. Yankee Trader

“Yanks should sign Andy, AJ and Tex and be done theres your off-season. Let CC go where he really wants to go and we get Tex to hit in front of A-Rod”

    There Bronx Jeers-Al Lives!!

  36. Nick in SF

I hope CC doesn’t say he wants to play for Waipo.

  37. CB

“CC would never use Ned Colletti, would he?”

    How naive.

Everyone knows cc is much more tech savvy than that.

CC has now started posting here at Lohud as one of the people who insists that CC hates NY. I think he posts as “LoveHandles.”

He’s using the lohud board to get leverage over cash as he knows cash reads this blog.

It’s reverse osmosis. Or something like that.

  38. BBB

“Cashman said he would like to have Pettitte back and hopes a deal can be struck.”

Great, then get on the horn with the Hendricks (Hendrickses?) and gitterdun.

I’m sick of all this talk regarding Pettitte. I want some action. Just meet in the middle at 13 and get the deal done already. Letting an above avg, left handed innings eater with whom you have the inside track slip away would be monumental idiocy.

  39. Tom

Once again CB adds needed persepective to this blog.

How do we know that CC didn’t say that jokingly? Something like “Hey Ned go in there and make me a Dodger!”.

It gets relayed by Colletti as “news” and spun out by journalists as a scoop.

  40. Drive 4-5

Here’s hoping that WideAsTheGrandCanyon hole at the #3 spot in the lineup gets filled too.

With 3 rotation spots to fill obviously the immediate need is starting pitching.CC would be a great addition.

What killed the Yanks last year was their inconsistent offense, especially with RISP. Getting Matsui & Posada back cetainly helps, but taking Abreu’s ( and Giambi’s to a lesser extent) numbers out of the equation counters that a bit. The Yanks need offensive help. If they only score 4 runs a game,it wont matter if they sign Sabathia or Koufax.

  41. Phil - 27 in '09

Above average? Are you refering to Pettitte? His ERA+ was 98 last year. That’s below average. Yes, he gave 200 innings…but they weren’t above average.

  42. BBB

oh and to echo someone else’s sentiments, Pete if you see this I would very much like to hear more about the meeting with Sheets if you can find out any details.

  43. Yankee Trader

Next FA signing-Casey Blake 3 years 17 million to Dodgers.

Next possible trade-Jake Peavy in 3 way with Phillies now involved.

  44. Arial

Bill Shaikin reports that a Giant official states that they are interested in CC. http://latimesblogs.latimes.co.....on-m.html.

  45. CMJ

Pete make sure you get some In-N-Out while you are in Vegas!!

  46. BBB

Phil: Considering that Pettitte pitched hurt through what is generally statistically the best portion of his year and still compiled an ERA+ that was only VERY slightly below avg, yes, I still consider him an above avg. pitcher as a whole.

  47. Nick in SF

If you’re watching the MNF game, Kornheiser just crossed the line. Awful.

  48. Phil - 27 in '09

You and I have different opinions as to what above average means.

  49. Tom

    Nick, what did he say?

  50. Yankee Trader

Sabathia’s choices, if money were not a factor and the deals were equal would be IMO, Dodgers 1st, Angels second, and Giants last. Isn’t the home he’s building in Malibu?

  51. Mark (Brett is back)

    What did he say Nick?

  52. Phil - 27 in '09

I’m not sure Kornheiser remembers where the line is anymore.

  53. CB

“Above average? Are you refering to Pettitte? His ERA+ was 98 last year. That’s below average. Yes, he gave 200 innings…but they weren’t above average.”

Calling an ERA+ of 98 as not being average is really quibbling with facts, especially when that pitcher is playing in the AL east.

Fine. Pettitte was 2% below a league average AL pitcher while throwing in the toughest division in baseball.

Pettite was also one of the five pitchers most hurt by the play of his defense behind him in 2008.

Pettite’s ERA+ adjusted for the defense behind him was 118.

  54. Nick in SF

“The official would not confirm whether the Giants had offered a contract to Sabathia but said they would need to make other moves before they could sign him.”

Yeah, it sounds like they’re serious players in the CC sweepstakes.

  55. Al from BK( Pull the offer now! Go get AJ and Tex!)

Andy should be resigned but he can wait. The focus atm should be AJ/Tex etc. As far as I’m concerned CC is just trying to give the Yankees a polite “thanks but no thanks” if Cash were intuitive he would see that CC’s heart is 3,000 miles West.

  56. Rob NY -- 2009 The Road to Redemption

    “That’s not a fact. It’s heresay. ”

As I study for my evidence final it is in fact hearsay. You can’t use a statement made by the witness other than ones made on the blog (during testimony) for the truth of the matter asserted. There’s no circumstantial guarantees of trustworthiness here people!

  57. Yanks in 2010

Waiting for CC to make up his mind..is like having your friend hand a love note to a girl in junior high and waiting for her response from across the cafeteria

In the mean time, your mind plays tricks on you, and you conceive every possible way she can reject you -while at the same time planning your first date with her

    What I’m trying to say is….CC I think I’m in love with you…but if it’s unrequited…then you’re ugly!

  58. Bronx Jeers

He better have not said anything about Dominicans, Canadians or CC’s eating habits!

  59. Phil - 27 in '09

I’m not a fan of the differing calculations on measuring defense and its’ affect on ERA. I am in the Neyer camp when it comes to that.

My point was that a 98 ERA+ can’t be considered above average.

  60. Yankee Trader

Per Ken Rosenthal and Ed Price-

The Brewers were close to re-signing third baseman Mike Lamb on Monday, a move that could lead to a trade of Bill Hall.

The Yankees are among the teams that have expressed interest in Hall, who could fill a utility role in both the infield and outfield for New York.

However, Hall’s remaining salary — $6.8 million in 2009 and $8.4 million in 2010 with a $9.25 million or $500,000 buyout for 11 — would be a significant obstacle to any deal.

The Yankees also have interest in Brewers center fielder Mike Cameron, who — like Hall — is close friends with the team’s principal free- agent target, left-hander CC Sabathia. Hall and Sabathia attended the Oscar De La Hoya fight Saturday in Las Vegas.

Lamb will rejoin the Brewers at the minimum salary, with his previous team, the Twins, paying the rest of the $3 million that he is owed in 2009. Lamb and Hall could form a left-right platoon at third for the Brewers if no trade is made. — Ken Rosenthal and Ed Price

Why would we take on Hall’s salary? Rosenthal just trying to keep up with Pete!!

  61. Phil - 27 in '09

That’s a lot of scratch for a utility guy.

  62. Nick in SF

Oh, I’m talking about the comedic line, not a line related to taste or propiety.

Dwayne Jarrett caught a pass for the Panthers and Kornheiser said “does that mean he ‘went to Jarrett’?”

  63. CB

Ok than Pettite was 2% worse than league average while pitching in the toughest division in the league.

Yes. 2% below league average is not league average. That is technically true.

  64. Phil - 27 in '09

2% below league average is not above average. That’s the only point I was trying to make.

I don’t overvalue Pettitte just because he was a Yankee during the Dynasty Years in the late ’90s.

  65. CB

Who said anything about the dynasty years?

I’m just stating a fact. Pettite was 2% worse than league average. That’s it.

  66. CMJ

    http://www.badmouth.net/in-n-outs-secret-menu/

Pete here is In-N-Out’s secret menu!!!

  67. Al from BK( Pull the offer now! Go get AJ and Tex!)

“Waiting for CC to make up his mind..is like having your friend hand a love note to a girl in junior high and waiting for her response from across the cafeteria

In the mean time, your mind plays tricks on you, and you conceive every possible way she can reject you -while at the same time planning your first date with her

    What I’m trying to say is….CC I think I’m in love with you…but if it’s unrequited…then you’re ugly!”

Best analogy I’ve ever read. CC is the home-coming queen, the Yankees are the chess team?

  68. BBB

“My point was that a 98 ERA+ can’t be considered above average”

Even though that’s technically the case, I don’t think Andy’s 2008 defines him as a pitcher. It was the only year in his career he ever posted an ERA+ below 100, and he was playing hurt. Which makes it a reasonable assumption that when healthy, he will return to above averagedom.

  69. NITRO

I remember a year ago today the winter Meetings started and today was the day we dropped out of the Santana derby and it looked like the Red Sox were getting serious.

This was the day that terrific Patriots-Ravens game was on too when they were 13-0 and it looked like the Ravens were going to knock them off.

  70. Drive 4-5

    YankeeTrader,

As we all know ( and we’re thankful for),the difference between Pete & Rosenthal is that Pete doesnt make stuff up or spread wild rumors.

Hall’s performance has been declining each year for the last 3 seasons. Defensively, he a jack of all trades, master of none. I see Wilson Betemit redux when I think of Bill Hall.

  71. CB

The yankees would only take Bill Hall back as a kind of salary dump.

Perhaps if they took him they could get Mike Cameron very cheaply in terms of talent going back. The brewers really want to get rid of hall.

That said, I don’t think they’re interested in Hall given their goal to enhance salary flexibility.

  72. Nick in SF

The Yankees would be the chess team captain that’s in the town’s richest family that has a history of getting the girl, perhaps. Is CC going to choose the ugly stoner dude because he lives closer to the beach?

  73. Yankee Trader

If the Cubs get Peavy, but have to free up some salary first, as reported, would there be any interest in taking on DeRosa or Harden, if made available?

  74. S.A.- CC Watch 2008: Making some Yankee fans go bonkers

Never had an In-N-Out burger. Are they really that awesome?

  75. george

if you think Pettitte is being overvalued, picture how the Yankee season would have gone if a clone of Ponson pitched the 204 innings that Andy pitched.

  76. WR packin heat

rosenthal also said the yankees and dodgers were discussing a trade until ned coletti said they hadnt spoken to the yanks since july

hall has a toxic contract. his #’s have been declining since 2006

  77. Moneyball

This is bush league. Expecting Andy to take 6 million less this year is absurd. IMO he should get a 13 or 14 mil dollar deal per year. Just get him back in the rotation.

  78. Mark (Brett is back)

Mike Cameron and Bill Hall would be strike outs galore.

  79. Yankee Trader

“if you think Pettitte is being overvalued, picture how the Yankee season would have gone if a clone of Ponson pitched the 204 innings that Andy pitched.”

Clone of Ponson- Are you referring to CC???

  80. WR packin heat

i lived in la for 4 years (toluca lake) and i have to say in n out was awesome. everythings cooked to order, the slice the potatoes and drop them straight into the fryer, no frozen crap. and they hustled. everybody going to socal has to experience it. its part of the car culture.

  81. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    Moneyball,

    Agreed.

    Andy is worth 13.

  82. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    WR packin heat,

Wow dude, are you still talkin food?

    Impressive.

  83. Buddy Biancalana

    SA-

In-N-Out is good, but not sure I would say awesome.

  84. Yankee Trader

Toronto interested in Furcal with money saved by not resigning Burnett. Furcal would be a pain to face, if fully recovered. Any chance he could play CF with his “rocket” arm?

  85. CMJ

“Never had an In-N-Out burger. Are they really that awesome?”

Yes Sir!! I drive a cab here in Vegas and I get requests to go to In-N-Out all the time. People from all over the world tell me they make it part of there trip every time they are in Vegas.

  86. Mike NYY

If we took on Hall’s contract what would it take to get him and Cameron? I don’t like Hall at all, I actually prefer Ransom, but I`m worried about our outfield depth if Gardner is the centerfielder.

  87. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    In n Out is rad.

Never had anything bad there, the menu is simple, yet offers plenty for the average burger lover, delicious shakes, fresh fries, and CHEAP.

Not only this, they let you get unusually creative…you can do protein style, animal style, and add extra patties at your will. My friend ate a 4×4 in less than 5 minutes.

  88. WR packin heat

ok, everybody agrees on $13 million? done and done. brian, you fax the language to randy, (or is it alan?) there wasnt that easy?

  89. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

I think In n Out’s one, single flaw is this:

    They DO NOT offer bacon.

  90. bottom line

A little love for Andy Pettite, please. One of the all-time Yankee greats. Period.

  91. S.A.- CC Watch 2008: Making some Yankee fans go bonkers

Well, if I ever head out west, I will def have to have an In-N-Out burger

  92. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

I know I will offend someone on here when I write this (which is at least partially why I write it), but In n Out DOMINATES Whitecastle like Shaquille O’Neal dominated Vlade Divac.

  93. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    bottom line,

Ya…the love for Andy has been scattered on this blog.

To some he represents “brittle old pitchers”.

  94. Nick in SF

In-N-Out is great for a fast-food burger, but now that it’s all over the Bay Area, I have it less than I thought it would when it was first coming here. Because it’s still just a fast-food burger.

The other uber-hyped places down in LA are Tommyburger and Fatburger.

  95. CMJ

Although to be honest I think Fatburger is better than In-N-Out.

  96. Phil

In-n-Out is the best drive thru place for burgers.

If you have time to go in and eat, The Apple Pan, All-American Burger and Fatburger rock. At Fatburger, order it on the char and skip the relish.

Bill Hall would be an immovable guy that sucks.

  97. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

Fatburger and Tommyburger don’t hold a candle to In N Out and I would argue that while fast to order, In N Out is far superior to anything that falls under the fast food umbrella.

Good meat, fresh vegetables, delicious cheese.

Its like a hybrid between a fast food joint and a sit down burger restaurant like a red robin.

  98. trade for peavy!

    yes i would take harden

  99. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

Fatburger is a joke. It tries to be In N Out but takes forever.

  100. Nick in SF

My favorite is the green chili cheeseburger at Blake’s Lotaburger, but you have to go to New Mexico for that.

  101. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    Here’s a food question:

What do East Coasters think of California Pizza Kitchen?

  102. Phil

    Fatburger is excellent.

  103. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    No Phil, you are Excellent.

  104. Bret the Hitman

In n Out fries are the best french fries that will ever exist for all of eternity. You can mark that down.

  105. Phil

So’s Fatburger, though you have to know what to order.

  106. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

Personally, I think CPK is overpriced, unfilling, and unacceptably unorthodox as far as pizza joints go. They went over the line when they created the Chinese Chicken Salad pizza. Unacceptable.

  107. CMJ

“What do East Coasters think of California Pizza Kitchen?”

    Abomination.

I would trade In-N-Out for some real NY pizza. No Doubt.

  108. Phil - 27 in '09

    Five Guys…now that’s a burger.

  109. WR packin heat

you have to put in n out above fatburger, they blow.
what i never got is why all the whites in socal go to taco pronto when there are hundreds of excellent mexican taco stands all over the city. nothin like taco bell (thank god) you just have to be able to order in spanish. if you cant handle that you shoudnt be in socal.

  110. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

Phil, please, do not confuse yourself with Fatburger, you are far superior just as In N Out is.

Bret, that is a bold statement. There are many a good fry in this world…In N Out makes delicious delicious fries. Have you ever had them animal style?

  111. Arial

Cameron would be a mistake…other than as an accommodation to CC if that’s what it would take. Known over the years as an excellent centerfielder, his defensive skills have declined dramatically over the past two seasons. He does not go back on the ball particularly well anymore, his angle on gap hits is no longer precise, and his hand to eye coordination has slipped quite a bit.

His BA over the past few years is sub-Melky, in the .240’s. He is good, however for 25 homers per annum, at least he was in Miller Park and other NL venues. He does have great dugout and locker room presence and is a good influence on the the younger players. On balance, for a salary of 10MM plus players (other than a Betamit-like dump) it makes no sense other than as an accommodation to CC.

  112. WR packin heat

five guys is basically the same menu as in n out but they do it in a cool califonia drive through not a stupid peanut covered strip mall.

  113. bottom line

    Burnett 17 m
    Pet 13 m
    Tex 23 m

That gets it done and saves $26 mil and yes if Punto can field three positions, bunt and run a little he’s better than anyone we’ve had on the job since Lucky Luis Sojo.

    A California bias, I see.

  115. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    CMJ,

When I last visited New York I was relatively unimpressed by the Pizza, though I only went to a few places…the only name I remember is Grimaldi’s in Brooklyn beneath the bridge and that place is a JOKE. Took like an hour waiting in line, they pack you like sardines, the pizza was watery and spongy, and they rush you out. No fun, but I’m sure there are far superior places if you know where to look.

  116. MoBoy(aka McLovin)

With everybody talking about burgers and pizza on this board makes me think that is what CC and Cashman talked about in their meetings.

Wow I go to a Christmas party for a few hours and Pete goes nuts blogging.

And if the sources are correct. If Andy really wanted to be a Yankee he would take the pay cut they are offering him. After 2006 Mike allowed them to decline his option and resigned at a lower salary per year. He wanted to finish his career here. I am wondering if Andy is just giving us lip service.

  119. WR packin heat

california bias? im from valley stream!

  120. CB

It’s tough to put a real value on Pettite as his last two seasons have been so different.

Andy was terrific in 2007. He was roughly 40 runs better than a replacement level pitcher.

That’s 4 wins better than replacement. Each marginal win is worth $5.5M.

So in 2007 Andy was worth $22M to the yankees while he was paid $16M.

This past season Andy was only 15 runs better than replacement.

So this year he was worth around $8M.

This divergence is probably why these negotiations are stalled.

Is Andy closer to the pitcher he was in 2007 when he was a relative bargain for the yankees? Or is he the pitcher of 2008 where he was significantly over paid?

Split the difference between 2007 and 2008. $12-13M should be right.

I like how cashman said the trade route isnt the preferred route to find STARTING PITCHING. The implication is that the trade route may be the preferred route to find offense. Although with cash not wanting to trade Cano or IPK or AJax (not like i want to im just saying) I dont know what kind of player we can get in return. Again, I find it extremely difficult to believe that the yanks and dodgers arent discussing cano, melky and kemp behind closed doors. There is rumors abound about this trade and I cant imagine someone made it up out of thin air as it doesnt really help either team to make up rumors like this.

iM glad we are on CC’s list. i WOULD hope offering him a record breaking contract would help us make the cut. I guess cash is perfectly content to let cc wait for a better offer to come along and probably then raise ours. aT least he is asking about NY so he has put some thought into coming here and isnt just using the yanks to get what he wants from somebody else.

  136. Arial

For those of you in the West Orange N.J. area, is Pal’s Cabin still around? what about Don’s Drive-In? The burgers at both of those places were excellent way back when.

  137. mel

Okay, don’t get upset, guys, but Cash just texted me his plan ‘A’.

Sign AJ, like tomorrow (or before the end of the week).

If CC doesn’t agree to the original offer by Monday, he’s going to make a strong pursuit for Mark Teixeira.

And he also said no more buffet jokes, Old Yanks Fan.

And, Nick, he doesn’t know where Waipo is. But there is a Waipahu and a Waipio in West Oahu.

  138. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    Ariel,

You know what the real artery clogging burger is? Its a place called Squeeze In Burger in Sacramento, CA.

They grill the burger as usual, then they take nearly two handfuls of grated cheese and put it on top of the burger, cover it with a metal square shaped thing-a-ma-jig and let it get all melted and crispy at the edges, then they throw it on a delicious bun with veggies and serve it.

Its unreal. I think if a person ate that place once a month starting at age 18, they’d be dead by 20.

  144. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

Ariel, where are you located? You in Cali?

  145. dave

river ave blues has ben sheets saying that he has no offers out there and not that much interests has been presented to him. He also has put no thought into being with the yanks – possibly because they havent talked to him yet. I think sheets will be a steal – i dont even think we need to go past two years to sign this guy and could possibly sign him for one at a high rate. He seems dissapointed that he hasnt gotten any offers or much interest – i think he would jump at the chance to sign a one or two yr deal with the yanks. aND it would stop making us look so desperate for CC and Burnett.

I dont mind signing three pitchers and those three being CC, Sheets and Burnett but offering Burnett 5 years and more than 75 million would end up being a total disaster for us. I cant imagine a deal like that would work out for us in the end.

Where is this nick punto rumor and is he a free agent? He made 3 mil last year and plays almost every position while putting up decent numbers last year so while he may be an excellent bench player, he would likely cost too much for the bench – his obp was about 50 points higher than canos.

I try to root for the Kings, I genuinely do…but I am truly a Blazers fan. Family from Oregon.

  151. dave

mY MISTAKE – nick punto made 2.4 million and only played in 100 games but his obp was almost 350 and he stole 15 bases. hE HAS only played centerfield 9 games in his life. Seems like if we had interest, it would be a bench player behind arod, jeter and cano. i thought Ransom had the job sewn up. I guess we are looking for an upgrade – it would be an expensive bench player though probably costing at least 3 million

  152. Arial

    Prince,

Mad Prince, no hard feelings at all, though I hope you renounce the analogy you made at around 6:22, that was really bad and not at all apt.

I don’t know if I’ve had a burger at Moe’s, but that would fall into a different category than big chains, wouldn’t it?

I’m not a big fan of Gordo’s, there are other taqueria’s I like much more. La Taqueria on Mission and 25th is my favorite, and I might take a drive there soon now that my first half Panthers bet has already hit.

And I don’t know about Sacramento, but I have been to –Murder Burger– Redrum Burger in Davis. That’s a big burger.

mel: why would anyone care about the proper spelling of some teeny town way out in the ocean????? KIDDING!

  155. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

My point was valid!!! I was groping for analogies to make you feel bad!!! :) Anyways, yes, no hard feelings.

Yes, Moe’s is a private joint, not a chain…didn’t know were talkin chains, I was just talkin burgers.

See, at Gordo’s its all about the Carnitas and the burritos. Haven’t tried that place in the Mission, but there are goldmines all over the Mission as far as Mexican food goes.

I was furious when they renamed Murder Burger into Redrum Burger. Actually, it changed ownership, not QUITE as good as it once was, but still tasty, and yes, HUGE.

And isn’t El Farolito on Mission between 23rd and 24th?

  175. dave

    mad prince,

I agree. Punto would be a solid guy on the bench but he would be expensive and he prolly wouldnt put up last years numbers. I dunno who spends 3 million on a bench players but i guess the yanks could. Not exactly a good way to decrease salary though.

People who are saying CC should be given time to decide must be joking. Im sure he decided about the yanks weeks ago – what free agent takes 4 weeks to decide whether or not to come to a team? He is not thinking it over – he is clearly biding his time. He is trying to use the yanks as leverage to get his money while waiting for a west coast team to lose out on someone that covet and go after him (like the angels, dodgers or giants.) He needs the yanks offer to set the bar and as a safety net in case none of these pan out. yOU THINK any team would offer him 140 million if the yanks retracted their offer? NO WAY! He would be making less than zito. iM glad we are on CC;s list considering he only has 2 legitimate offers and they are at least 40 million and more like 50 million dollars apart. That comment almost sounds like an insult. The yanks need to do the smart thing and set a deadline – otherwise CC will drag this out until january and then, sign with a west coast team when they lose out on someone else. We will look like a joke and probably lose out on multiple other FAs that we would go after if we were waiting on cc. Its getting very frustrating knowing that cc is pulling this stunt and the yanks arent doing anything about it. iTS making us look bad and desperate in the process.

As for CC: we *are* desperate, that’s why we made him the richest pitching contract in history as our opening offer and that’s why we’ll tolerate this drawn out song and dance to eventually sign him.

You know how many pitchers we currently have signed into the rotation who aren’t coming off a major injury and who can be counted on to pitch a complete season? Not too many.

  188. mel

    pat,

    Sorry I took so long.

No, Teddy didn’t say anything, but Cash did send me a funny story.

He was so mad, he was going to pull his endowment at Teddy’s preschool.

Apparently, Teddy kept skipping from A to J. Cash was getting upset, trying to correct Teddy. But Teddy told him back, “How do you know? You keep getting stuck on C!”

  189. dave

    Phil,

Oh they probably met after he made that comment then i guess. Signing sheets right now is the smart play. Whether or not we sign CC, its the right thing to do IMO. We cant continue looking so deperate and anxious with two starters currently. We should sign sheets, try to get pettitte to take the 10 million and start taking with Burnett about what it would take to get him here. We should do everything we would do as if CC has already said no. He is clearly in the business of wasting our time.

Tex may be looking at 8 years from the angels pretty soon. Manny and the dodgers seem to be done. Just reading this from other sites though so I dunno how accurate they are.

  190. BBB

Sorry if this is a repost, but MLBTR on bosux and CC:

  193. Rob NY -- 2009 The Road to Redemption

Here’s my question to the Cali crowd. Back home (NY) when I order a Chicken Parm Hero they know exactly what to do. Up here in Boston I have to ask for a Sub. Outside of the time I played against USD in college i’ve never been west of Pennsylvania so what do you all call a sandwich on a long roll?

  194. pat

    mel

 Smart boy that Teddy is.

Good to hear he’s working on his reading skills. Maybe he can read himself bedtime stories this off-season so dad doesn’t fall asleep reading to him and miss an important phone call.

  195. dave

Rosenthal’s source? Last week he wrote a whole article on why the sox would sign sabathia and then, at the end he said they would never tough 140 million. Now they are doing their due dilligence and arent even really interested – i GUESS its news to rosenthal but it isnt news to anyone else who can think for themselves. On the other hand, if the sox sign tEX and the angels turn their attention to cc, we will be screwed. This is why you cant make a plan A and a plan B. You just have to make a list of all the players you want and go after them whenever the chance presents itself.

  196. Nick in SF

Plan A is ok, Plan B a little less so, but Plan CC is the path to happiness.
