Meeting with Sheets impressed Girardi

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Dec 09, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Joe Girardi confirmed that the Yankees met with Ben Sheets and his agent, Casey Close, yesterday.

“I faced Ben Sheets when I was with the Cubs and I’ve admired the work that he’s done over the years. It was good to talk to him about his health, his routines and what he likes to do. He’s a very open young man and he was impressive,” Girardi said.

“His numbers stack up against anyone’s. He’s healthy now, we believe. He’s had some injuries, but injuries are what have kept him out of that class. When he’s on the mound, he’s dynamite.”

The Yankees also had conversations with the agents representing A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe. This serves two purposes: It pressures CC Sabathia and protects the Yankees should Sabathia wimp out and sign elsewhere. Plus they need at least two starters.

  2. Ed - Cano WILL BE the 2009 2B! December 9th, 2008 at 7:20 pm

still nothing on what the offer would be?

  3. Steamer December 9th, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Wouldn’t mind them getting Sheets for a short term deal. Even though its probably not fair to him personally but I think the Yankees should be very close with injury riddled guys especially in light of The Pavano Error.

  4. Mike December 9th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

I heard they offered him 2 years 26 million

  5. Phil Parcells December 9th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Ben Sheets is Scottish for Carl Pavano

  6. vinny-b (big CC: the peeps on this blog were only kidding) December 9th, 2008 at 7:24 pm

    sign him.

    low risk = high reward

  7. Fran December 9th, 2008 at 7:24 pm

Like Girardi said, if healthy Sheets is as good as any of the top pitchers in the league. I think the Yanks should take a chance on a short-term deal with Sheets.

  8. We need the big guy!! December 9th, 2008 at 7:26 pm

It seems like the Yanks are impressed with alot of people. But how many players are impressed with them?!

  9. Tyler December 9th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

instead of waiting on CC.. sign sheets burnett and lowe haha

  10. i am the walrus December 9th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

 The Yankees are included in just about every rumor and FA available. How long will it be till we hear about a rumor that Gammons is being approached with a deal for him to become Emperor?

  11. vinny-b (big CC: the peeps on this blog were only kidding) December 9th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

  16. Al from BK( CC is a bum, enjoy 50 million less and pitching for the Giants!) December 9th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

“Didnt they reward the Angels the championship last year after they acquired Tex? One thing iv learned in the last 8 years. Paper champions dont always end up World Series Champs. Also, dont forget that they both got ousted in the first round this year.”

Sign Sheets and have him call up CC and tell him he needs a wing-man for NYC :)

if wings are in it for him (or the whole chicken) he might do it.

  23. Blackdragon905 December 9th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Is anybody listening to Suzyn Waldman? I’m trying to but I dont hear any audio. I’m not hearing anything.

    Blackdragon,

    you not the only one.

  27. harwood December 9th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

    pleeeeeeeeeeeaaase do it

  28. James December 9th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

Sheets is no Pavano, a little soft like Pavano but 10x the pitcher. This guy is lights out when healthy and started for the NL all star game this year.

Some injury concerns yes, although reports are last years were unrelated to previous injuries.

  29. gayle December 9th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Just got audio back they must be in a commercial break i believe they can stream all the commercials on the web just heard a car comercial then dead air

“Wouldn’t mind them getting Sheets for a short term deal. Even though its probably not fair to him personally but I think the Yankees should be very close with injury riddled guys especially in light of The Pavano Error”

The Pavano signing was terrible before any injuries though. The guy was never a great pitcher (and I’m not talking about his W-L record), he just had one fluke season with a solid defense in a big NL ballpark. The front office got duped so horribly on that one.

  33. Blackdragon905 December 9th, 2008 at 7:44 pm

    I have audio now!

  34. Cor Shep December 9th, 2008 at 7:45 pm

I’de love to sign Sheets at two years.. that’d be great. If he pithces 300-350 innings as a Yankee I’de also consider that a great success.

Also, if the Angels need Tex so badly, why haven’t they formally given him an offer yet? We know they’re gonna and we know Tex wants to sign soon, but why haven’t they yet. Their def his #1 preference.. I don’t get it

  35. Ed - Cano WILL BE the 2009 2B! December 9th, 2008 at 7:45 pm

i got audio, do you guys have it yet?

  36. Ed - Cano WILL BE the 2009 2B! December 9th, 2008 at 7:45 pm

    Daniel,

    welcome to 2 years ago!

  37. JR Yankees December 9th, 2008 at 7:46 pm

I don’t remember last offseason being so crazy with so many false reports. What is going on?

By the end of the night we very well could have offers on the table for CC, Sheets, Lowe, and Burnett.

Why don’t they just offer Teixeira a contract too? Maybe Boras will give a package discount with Tex and Lowe.

j/k on that last part…a little

  38. Adam December 9th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

They probably want to see what his real market value is now. With K-Rod getting 40 million less than he was looking for a few months ago things are obviously changing.

  39. S.o.S. December 9th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

“Yet, getting treated like the “ugly” girl at the prom.”

Lets hope that we’re that ugly girl that takes off her glasses and lets her hair down ends up the beauty queen.

  40. pat December 9th, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Girardi was talking up Sheets months ago.

  41. Adam December 9th, 2008 at 7:48 pm

“I don’t remember last offseason being so crazy with so many false reports. What is going on?”

Every offseason is like this. Welcome to the Hot Stove.

  42. CB December 9th, 2008 at 7:48 pm

“I don’t remember last offseason being so crazy with so many false reports. What is going on?”

The santana trade? That was fairly ridiculous.

  43. Joe from Long Island December 9th, 2008 at 7:48 pm

If anyone’s interested, Suzyn is on 880AM radio interviewing Andrew Zimbalist, probably the best sports economist in the country. He’s talking about the effect of the financial crisis on baseball. Pretty interesting interview.

  44. Adam December 9th, 2008 at 7:50 pm

“If anyone’s interested, Suzyn is on 880AM radio interviewing Andrew Zimbalist, probably the best sports economist in the country.”

Isn’t this the guy that got exposed as a fraud during the Seattle Sonics trial earlier this year? I think he reused a report that he had used at a different trial and charged the city big bucks for it.

  45. blee December 9th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

howabout teixera sheets and pettitte instead of sabathia and burnett/lowe

  46. JR Yankees December 9th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

Yeah, I know there were many false reports concerning Santana and maybe a couple others but this year it seems like there are so many reports throughout all of baseball.

  47. Al from BK( CC is a bum, enjoy 50 million less and pitching for the Giants!) December 9th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

“howabout teixera sheets and pettitte instead of sabathia and burnett/lowe”

Would make a lot of sense but I couldn’t depend on Sheets to be the sole acquisition in the rotation hes pretty much guaranteed a DL stint once a year.

  48. EDUB December 9th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Only thing that mildly bugs me about this whole CC Sabathia waiting game is this post I remember reading a while back with one of the only direct quotes we’ve really heard from CC regarding free agency.

“I want to get it done pretty quick. I try to be as less free as possible. All that is is stress, having it drag on through the winter. I can guarantee you I won’t be flying around going to different cities. I’ve pretty much been to every city. I’ve got a lot of friends around the league. They’re going to have to come to me.”

    (source: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....pen-t.html)

Perhaps this was at a time when he figured there would be more offers than just the Brewers and the Yankees or maybe his agent just had other plans

  49. Bronx Jeers December 9th, 2008 at 7:56 pm

Either Teixeira pitches or Sheets gets 65 starts.

Then Tex,Pettite & Sheets makes sense.

  50. Tom K December 9th, 2008 at 8:02 pm

Tex, Pettitte, and Sheets would still leave the rotation thin.

There is some good talent on the market…but CC is what the Yankees desperately need more than anything else.

I like Tex, but he would just be a secondary prize IMHO.

  51. We need the big guy!! December 9th, 2008 at 8:02 pm

Girardi is on the radio with Suzyn…

  52. Joe from Long Island December 9th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

I don’t know anything about Zimbalist and Seattle. He is a professor of economics at Smith and has written extensively for many years. All the media go to him for their research about money and the sports industries.

  53. Ken O December 9th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Cashman, Torre and Yankee brass have always been secretive with their dealings. I noticed that Girardi gives input on all possible targets. I heard him on WFAN talk about how he wants Mike Cammeron then I heard on the Yes networks Hot Stove show commenting how he wants this guy and that guy. Its like he is speaking like he is just a regular fan but he could jepordize their bargaining power. Pete, what do you think?

  54. John December 9th, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Sheets and Burnett are exactly the same. Both have dominant stuff and both are pretty much guaranteed to get hurt once a year.

  55. Mike December 9th, 2008 at 8:27 pm

Honestly . .enough of CC . .he doesn’t want to play for us . . So for the price of one CC . .you can get Sheets Burnett and Lowe

  56. will fl December 9th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

I really like sheets.I’d like to see him given a shot, He will come cheap too. It’s a win win

  57. S.o.S. December 9th, 2008 at 8:34 pm

“So for the price of one CC . .you can get Sheets Burnett and Lowe.”

Or we can get Clement,Igawa and Pavano for that price.

  58. MackNova December 9th, 2008 at 9:05 pm

I would LOVE Sheets. Is there a chance he might be the next Pavano? Sure, but he has much better stuff than Pavano did, and I’d be willing to take another chance. If he’s healthy, he’s a stud.

  59. YankeeBaseball December 9th, 2008 at 9:11 pm

Leave CC’s offer there but on the condition that we’re gonna go pillage and plunder the other top free agents with top dollar blow away offers, and when they sign and the money’s gone, CC’s stuck back in Old Milwaukee…

    Burnett
    Sheets
    Texiera

    Do it!

  60. ANSKY December 9th, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Would Sheets & Cash agree on two or years, in either case with a team option for one more year? If he’s healthy before the option year hits, just give him an extension for a couple more. We’ve heard ‘when healthy he can really pitch’ in these parts before, so I’m hoping his arm’s not a time bomb.

Would Cash take CC, Sheets and Tex, then offer a year-to-year deal to Pettitte instead of going for 3 new big-name FA pitchers and no Tex? Keeping in mind that trades can be made to fill in any other gaps if the opportunity is right.

  61. ANSKY December 9th, 2008 at 9:22 pm

… “two or THREE years” … sorry.

  62. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes December 9th, 2008 at 9:37 pm

“It pressures CC Sabathia and protects the Yankees should Sabathia wimp out and sign elsewhere. Plus they need at least two starters.”

Key words: wimp out and sign elsewhere

That’s right. If CC does opt to sign else where, he is wimping out from the big stage because no stage is greater than New York.

  63. Dave December 9th, 2008 at 9:45 pm

“”Honestly . .enough of CC . .he doesn’t want to play for us . . So for the price of one CC . .you can get Sheets Burnett and Lowe”"

Ya but which one of those would be good enough or able to start game 1 or 7 of Post season?

  64. Eric December 9th, 2008 at 9:54 pm

Ben Sheets’ most similar / comparable pitcher statistically, according to BRef is AJ Burnett….
And at less than half of the price, it sounds like a good deal
