Torre talks about some Yankee topics

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Dec 09, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Joe Torre just spoke to reporters and talked about a few Yankees issues:

Andy Pettitte didn’t call Torre to ask about pitching for the Dodgers. His agents called Ned Colletti. Joe then called Andy. “I jumped at it,” Torre said. “I took the opportunity to let him know we have interest.”

Pettitte told Torre he wanted to stay with the Yankees. “They’re his first choice,” Torre said.

Torre also spoke to Joe Girardi said. He said he firmly believes that Girardi will be better in his role next season. “He had a lot of pressure on him,” said Torre, who is very close with Girardi. “I think it ate on him a little bit.”

Torre talked about how difficult it can be for a young manager to come to a successful team with established players.

Torre also said he felt Robinson Cano could bounce back because he’s too talented not to.

    I miss Joe Torre.

So, the Yankees are Andy’s first choice. Does BOS know? I mean, that can hurt their chances of landing him. :P

    The Yankees bullpen doesn’t.

Joe Torre is a class act.

Say what you want about Torre and bull pen management, etc. -

But how many guys would be so gracious when discussing the manager who replaced him?

Managing a baseball team isn’t rocket science. It’s nowhere close to as complicated strategy wise as football is. Too much random chance in baseball to do much in terms of “play calling.”

Managing human relationships, emotions, and ego’s over a very long season is just a huge part of the job – especially in NY.

Torre was as good as that part of managing as we’ve seen. Class act all the way.

I love Joe T. However Girardi did a lot better in regards to the bullpen and saving the arms. GI Joe gave a lot more leeway to his starters going deep into games. Andy would never go to the Sox.

wish he was still in a Yankees uniform

  8. AROD fan December 9th, 2008 at 6:21 pm

    Classy guy, that torre.

  9. Chris NY December 9th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

Torre is totally still a Yankee at heart. And yes, a class act for even discussing anything Yankee related, let alone defending his replacement. And, at the same time, no-one would accuse him of being disloyal to his current employer for talking about the Yankees. He’s earned such respect.

Now can we get some good sabathia news already? I can’t wait any longer.

A-ROD FAN- I think we are all waiting for that but as days go by the more I prefer giving big money to Tex.

“Dan Graziano believes Burnett has the personality to thrive in New York.”

He would do well here IMO. He has great stuff and a tough attitude him along with Tex would make me feel good about 09.

I seriously hope Boston steal Lowe away from the Yanks. Lowe wants to pitch in Boston, he made it clear!!

    Boston or Philly**

  17. Chris NY December 9th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

anyone like Lowe for 4 years/65M? Weren’t the Yankees originally thinking more along the lines of 3 years?

Five years is a long time for AJ. That’s a huge risk.

But if they go 5 years I assume they’ll basically tell AJ it’s a take it now kind of deal.

Years later we look back on deals and wonder how they were made and why those contracts were given.

But it’s difficult to remember the context under which offers are made.

The yankee’s are exposed to enormous amounts of risk right now – they have two starters in their rotation, one of whom is innings capped.

The risk of that enormous exposure is driving everything they are doing.

5th year for burnett? Let’s hope he is the next Curt Schilling…

I was driving down the FDR in November and I saw Joe driving next to me. It was weird because it was the first time i’d ever seen him “up close” and I always thought of the guy as a like that uncle who had the good stories at christmas, cult of personality. Been following the Yanks with my grandpa since about ’92 when I was seven so really Joe was all I ever knew as a skipper. Sure he screwed the pooch sometimes when it came to which guys out of the pen had their arms falling off and which had bed sores on their backsides but you can’t argue with the results he gave you year in and year out. (Even if Sturtzey and Proctor’s pitching arms both fell off.) It was weird watching him manage the Dodgers in the playoffs, and I don’t know about anybody else but when I read “I think it ate on him a little bit.” I could hear him saying that with his cap off in a post-game talking to Kim Jones.

  22. Chris NY December 9th, 2008 at 6:35 pm

“peavy expects to land in the bronx if he is not traded to the cubs”

that sounds strange for a guy that said he would not pitch for the Yankees.

“according to my friend, if he doesn’t end up with the Cubs, he expects to land with the New York Yankees.”

clearly this guy’s “friend” out in a bar is as credible a source as there is…….

  25. trade for peavy! December 9th, 2008 at 6:46 pm

    just mentioning it

  26. Alvaro Fernandez December 9th, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Joe Torre is the Alan Greenspan of managers … says exactly what you want to hear.

  27. Chris NY December 9th, 2008 at 6:49 pm

I hear you. But there have been numerous reports that he doesn’t want to pitch in NY and he’s only approved the Cubs and Braves. I guess that could always change, but there’s no way we’re giving up Hughes and others to get someone we’ll have to turn around and also give a lot of money to as well. I guess it could happen if we strike out BIG TIME on free agents, but trading for Peavy seems extremely unlikely.

    ————————————————————

Please explain what rotation from 2004 through 2007 Torre had that would have allowed him to handle the bullpen differently. While there, explain what bullpen did he have beyond Rivera and for two years, Tom Gordon and Scott Proctor was available except for somebody’s castoffs. Possibly the only real error might have been Ramirez when he didn’t work him against a string of strong teams after the All-Star break. Proctor was bad in 2005, but had a very good 2006 and half of 2007. His numbers in LA matched his NY numbers.

i dont want to trade hughes either but i think they have enough arms to get it done with out hughes specially now if the deal with the cubs falls through towers will be even more desperate

You aren’t really claiming that Sturtz was overworked, are you? He pitched long relief and still worked less than he did for Tampa (starter) and for Toronto.

Our starters gave us no length, thus the abuse but Ramirez was blunder and he also was guilty of some questionable use and lack of use of Rivera that caused the latter avoidable problems.

If there is no chance to use a closer because the games are a blowout, why use them? You have no way of knowing if he won’t be needed in the next 2 or three straight games. As far as I remember, he was never used in 4 straight games. any arm issues that Rivera may have had were usually minor….not from overwork…a couple od arm strains. He had a few groin and hamstring pulls. Almost never was he warmed up and not used.

  35. jeff December 10th, 2008 at 12:51 am

really, i can’t knock torre. no one is perfect.. but look at it this way.. would you rather have proctor’s arm fall off or Riveras? Plus he didn’t have a setup guy who was good for the 8th inning any year but the end of 2007 all the way back to mike stanton.

joe’s a class guy. I don’t think he’s all warm fuzzies away from the camera, but he could manage my club any day.

that being said i still think if you had to replace him joe girardi was a good pick.
