Boras has his say from on high

Peter Abraham
December
10

Scott Boras marched into the media work room a few minutes ago, closely followed by about two dozen notebook-carrying reporters.

Boras climbed up on the camera platform and addressed the masses about his many clients.

Say this for Jason Varitek: He has an agent who cares about him. As he did at the GM Meetings a month ago, Boras worked hard to boost Varitek’s value despite his horrific offensive season in 2008. He went so far as to compare catchers to submarines, saying you have to look under the surface.

Boras offered no specifics. Derek Lowe has plenty of offers and would like to play on the East Coast. He didn’t talk to much about Manny Ramirez, however. I’m certainly not suggesting collusion, but it does seem that GMs are very wary of Manny and his act.

Outside of the Dodgers, not one team has come out and admitted to interest.

Manny can’t possibly come up without a seat in the game of MLB musical FA chairs like Mr. Barry Bonds can he? It can’t be possible.

  4. j2

That wishful thinking about the Yankees grabbing Manny under the radar before the end of the winter meetings can’t happen with Boras as his agent, unfortunately.

  5. EvoLuTioN

Pete, you forgot Hank wanting Manny

  6. DB

Why did we give CC an additional year?

I mean we ended up bidding against ourselves – no one else was offering six at $140 million. Yet, no, we toppped ..our selves.

  7. Rock Smoother

    Pete,

    We need Andy back.

He’s a Yankee, he’s our guy, and he’s a lefty grinder who throws 200 innings and only wants a 1 year deal.

Will you please text him and tell him to sit in a chair before the music stops.

  8. yankeefan91 Sign ,burnett or sheets and manny

i hope the yanks sign mannyyyyyy this would be a great addition to the offense and remember we lost giamb and abreu and i think manyy would drive in tons a run and arod will b a beter hitter imagine him and manny this would b great

Anyone see the accuscore simmulations? Nice read
“The Yankees have signed CC Sabathia to a record seven-year, $161 million contract, addressing their starting pitching problems in a big way. Sabathia made a huge impact for the Milwaukee Brewers last year, going 11-2 in 17 starts after coming over from the Cleveland Indians and helping the Brewers to the National League wild-card berth.

However, Sabathia doesn’t provide a major upgrade for the Yankees, who lost two of their best starting pitchers with Mike Mussina retiring and Andy Pettitte a free agent. That leaves Joba Chamberlain and Chien-Ming Wang as the best starting options before the Sabathia signing.

AccuScore simulated the Yankees’ 2009 season with Mussina, Pettitte, and Alfredo Aceves, and compared that group to Sabathia, Aceves, and Phil Hughes.

The Yankees with a rotation including Sabathia but without Mussina and Pettitte would post a 90-72 record.

The Yankees with a rotation including Mussina and Pettitte but without Sabathia would post an 87-75 record.

The Yankees with a rotation without Mussina, Pettitte and Sabathia would post an 81-81 record.

So, the AccuScore simulations establish that Yankees would improve by only three victories with Sabathia and Hughes replacing Mussina and Pettitte. Going into the 2009 season, the Yankees were looking at an 81-81 record with a rotation that didn’t include Mussina, Pettitte or Sabathia. The addition of Sabathia upgrades the Yankees by nine wins.

Current rumors have the Yankees going heavily after Derek Lowe, which would provide another big impact. In AccuScore simulations with Sabathia and Lowe in the rotation, the Yankees improve their record to 97-65, with Lowe providing an additional seven-win upgrade.”

The country could be in the middle of the Great Depression, Part 2 and Scott Boras would deny it exists then pinch every last dime for his clients.

  11. S.A.- CC you soon Mr. Sabathia

“Scott Boras marched into the media work room a few minutes ago, closely followed by about two dozen notebook-carrying reporters.”

I figured he would have a few minions carry him into the media work room. There would also be people throwing flower petals at him and harp music playing.

  12. Gabe Paul

I want to know who was the wise guy in Tampa who opened the locked closet door and let Hank and his mouth out.

The Hal instructions specifically said “do not let him out until after the winter meetings.”

  13. gayle

Im sure he didnt say much about Pudge rodriquex either talk about nary a whisper I have heard or read about him either.

“He went so far as to compare catchers to submarines, saying you have to look under the surface.” – Boras about Varitek

The only thing beneath the surface of the submarine, USS Varitek is barnacles.

  15. Garym

The more i think about it I think the Yankees may swoop in and sign Manny. I want them to forget about Burnett and get Lowe, sheets and Petitte and move Joba back and wow best bullpen in baseball and maybe the best rotation or one of them and then Hughes can develop more and be the extra guy.

  16. Phil

Was the entire audience healed while he was speaking, Pete?

  17. DB

Varitek is a squeaky, rusted diesel in a stealth, nuclear navy

  18. DurhamYankee

IMO the only way we get Manny is if he and Boras become desperate and can’t find a suitor, which is pretty doubtful. I think he ends up with the Angels or Dodgers

  19. DB

Is that a notebook in your pocket, or are you just happy to see Boras.

  20. vinny-b (bring back Petitte and sign Sheets at 2 yrs)

I’d love Manny hitting behind A-rod, too, but Boras doesn’t let his clients sign early before the fullest market develops (sans A-rod?).

  23. S.A.- CC you soon Mr. Sabathia

Call it Theatre of the Absurd, when just after 4 p.m. PT, Scott Boras created quite a scene here in Vegas.

Boras came out of an elevator bank at the Bellagio and a pack of reporters surrounded him. Boras was leaning up against a glass wall of a gift shop when hotel security officers started screaming at reporters that they could not shoot in the lobby.

After a few minutes of ignoring their pleas, a head security guard parted the sea of reporters, instructing Boras to take his show to a nearby ballroom.

That began a five-minute journey of at least 40 reporters following the super agent through the hotel hallways. Onlookers were bemused by the scene.

At one point a young man wearing a Yankees cap was walking alongside me.

“Hey mom, I’m following Scott Boras,” he said through his cell phone. “We’re all following him. He’s got some sort of press conference.”

The scene ended at the media workroom, where Boras stood on an impromptu dais and addressed questions about his crop of free agents.

The answers were not nearly entertaining as the show that preceded them.

Sounds like a visit from the Pope?

  24. Brian (Red Sox fan)

There was some talk in an earlier thread about why the “extra” million (to $161M) in CC’s contract. The reason is to give him the second-highest overall baseball contract in history (behind ARod’s first, and the extension). Manny’s $160M had been the previous #2. It’s an ego thing.

ARod’s first contract was drawn up in a similar fashion. I forget the exact number, but it was $1M more than Kevin Garnett’s contract, which was the highest contract in sports at the time. Again, an ego thing.

Having said that, it’s an excellent, and necessary signing for the Yankees. Along with AJ and Sheets, it will be an excellent supplement to the Yankee player development system. (Where did that go? Too bad the Yankees didn’t stay with it.)

  25. Tom

Afterwords, he entered the Boras Mobile and took a final lap around the crowd…

  26. Keith

If Cashman had confirmed and full reports from Dr. Andrews in Birmingham that Ben Sheets had absolutely no health issues then OK do the deal and do it quick but I can’t help but think how he flamed out at the end of last season.

  27. Tom

I once heard that Arod’s deal with Texas came the day after some cable company signed a 10 year 252 million dollar contract with the Rangers…

  28. i am the walrus

I think the additional year, along with the opt out is what pushed it to a quicker signing. The Yankees wanted to have the big one locked in, that frees them up for doing other moves and being able to concentrate on them.

The deal CC got was also about giving him a larger contract than Santana got.

  29. Yankee Trader

With Sabathia the current payroll would be around 164M
With Burnett@ 16M that pushes it up to approx. 180M
The payroll was a tad over 207M

If they sign Burnett for 16M/year, what other pitcher do you realistically see them offering a contract to?

At that point, IMO they will not look to take on a 10M CF contract like Cameron-maybe a one year incentive deal to a player like Mark Kotsay and spend a few dollars on Punto leaving the payroll around 195M. Another idea would be to trade some of our pitching for a low cost option like a Skip Schumaker or a Ryan Spillborghs.

Thoughts on how you would round out the team while staying below 200 million?

  30. raymagnetic

“Along with AJ and Sheets, it will be an excellent supplement to the Yankee player development system. (Where did that go? Too bad the Yankees didn’t stay with it.)”

Last I checked the Yankees still had a majority of their more highly thought of prospects still in the organization, so I would that the player development system hasn’t gone anywhere.

The plan was always to try to get CC after not making the deal for Santana last year. How hard is that for you to understand?

You do know how to put on a hurt. I have to agree with you. For all the sermonizing here the last year about exhibiting patience and developing players there’s a lot of excitement about signings that will take rotation spots away from those very prospects.

  33. Brian (Red Sox fan)

Walrus …. the deal is to give him more than Manny, not Santana; #2 overall in MLB (just as ARod wanted to make more than Kevin Garnett – #1 overall, period). See my 8:52 post.

  34. Nick

    ……………………………………

Get real sport and pay attention to your own team. The Yankee farm system is alive and well. It takes time to produce ballplayers. You’ve been brainwashed by Gammons that Boston churns out talent at an incredible pace.

  35. RhapsodyInBlue

All this Manny news is making me nervous.

I think they need to take Hank for a ride out on T’s boat off the Long Island sound like Big Pussy. No weighted boots.

At least for a few days until the Manny signing blows over. Then bring Hank back, someone needs to feed the ducks in Tampa.

    No Manny please.

  36. yankeefan91 Sign ,burnett or sheets and manny

according to rosenthal the mets close to aquiring puts in a tre way deal wit the tribes

  37. Noreaster

    Brian,
The Yankees are doing the EXACT same thing the SOX are doing. Developing players and filling in with free agents. EEI was all over this today and they (like you) are just wrong. We’ve developed Cano, Joba, Wang, Gardner/Milky plus have arms (like the SOX) in the minors waiting to mature. The Sox are after the biggest bat in this off season, does that mean they’ve given up on Lars? I don’t think so…they have the same plan…

  38. Drive 4-5

    raymagnetic,

I think Brian is referring to potentially filling our last 2 rotation spots with a duo of free agents. What if Kennedy, Aceves and Hughes or others have great Spring Trainings? What does Girardi tell them when he sends them down?

  39. yankeefan91 Sign ,burnett or sheets and manny

  42. JoeT 28 in 10 KEEP PHIL FRANCHISE AND CANO!! Sheets 2 years > AJ for 5

If Putz can get back to himself, the Mets will be in great shape late in games

  43. Yankee Trader

Here the Mets go-trying to gain hold of the back pages.

Rumor monger, Ken Rosenthal reporting Mets close to a deal for JJ Putz, involving a three way with the Indians, without knowing what other players involved.

  44. you gotta have faith (NO to Aj for 5 years, NOOOOO)

im just gald the whole CC thing is over, ppl were starting to get a bit impatient, and that just might be an understatement lol

  45. BBB

    Hey everyone,
I’ve been exceedingly busy with work stuff and personal nonsense all day and will be thru tomorrow as well, so havent had a chance to read any of the comments on CC. I swear the baseball gods have an agreement that good things can ONLY happen when I’m too busy to enjoy them e-Yankees geek style by refreshing this page a billion times. So frustrating!!

But anyway, three cheers for CC!!!

Now if only we could wake up tomorrow to “Yankees sign Sheets” and nothing about Burnett, or, worse, Lowe. Just read on MLBTR theyre offering AJ 5 years, yikes!

  46. Noreaster

Drive 4-5, he tells them to prove that they can throw striks with their fastballs. They are both young and have alot to prove. Given time in AAA I think they will both gain the confidence they need to throw strikes at the major league level.

  47. DurhamYankee

How old are Hughes and Kennedy? They have plenty of time to get into the rotation. Also, every rotation runs into injuries throughout the season, I am sure Hughes and Kennedy will be called to make spot starts. Whats really the big deal here? We get CC, Burnett and all of a sudden we are not developing players. But if Cashman would have gone with the same rotation of last year with hughes and kennedy then the same people would say hes not trying to win. Lets just be happy were going to have a strong team in 2009

  48. AROD fan

Where oh where would Boras be without the Yankees beat writers?

  49. AROD fan

one among the masses of scummy sports agents

  50. Brian (Red Sox fan)

Nick and Noreaster – I was just tweaking you; obviously the behavior patterns of the two teams are similar. But I do find it ironic that the Yankees have been drafting and “developing” pitchers for several years now, but feel the need to sign three free agent starters …. not exactly a testament to their youth movement.

Joseph – thnks for the clarification on the Garnett/Arod contracts. I knew there was aconnection, but I misstated iy (by $126M, give or take a few dollars).

  51. BBB

“Along with AJ and Sheets, it will be an excellent supplement to the Yankee player development system. (Where did that go? Too bad the Yankees didn’t stay with it.)”

hahaha, fail. Last I looked it didn’t go anywhere; Hughes, Kennedy, Melancon, Jackson, Montero, Brackman and Betances and all the other guys we’re looking to to be a part of the future are all still Yankees. Nice wishful thinking, though!

I think this is one of the best parts about the CC signing, the Yankee inferiority complex crew has been sitting on their angst, waiting for us to sign a big FA from outside for like 3 years now, and now they can finally let it out.

“The Yankees are gonna have a payroll of $280 million!” “So much for developing their own players!”
    and so it goes….

(obviously the guy I quoted didnt whine like THAT, so not directed at you bro, but it’s just that kind of angst I’ve been hearing all day)

  52. Yankee Trader

Sabathia, in this economic climate, should purchase one of the 3-4 suites available for $600-800,000 and invite us true Yankee fans on the LoHud blog to sit in the seats each and every night!!

  53. Tom

    Isn’t Joba Home Grown?

  54. Thomas

    Manny to the YANKEES!

    Make it happen Ca$h Money!

  55. Tom

    What’s the big deal here?

    Joba
    most of the bullpen
    Cano
    Wang
    Gardner/Melky
    Hughes will get his starts
    Jackson around ‘10/’11
    Montero
    Romaine
    Laird
not to mention all of the young pitchers in a ball.

Seems that the Yankees do intend to develop players…

  56. Drive 4-5

    Noreaster,

I agree those guys have to prove they can locate their fastball. But if you tie up the #3 and 4 spots for the next 4 years those guys wont be so young before they get a shot. I’d like to see some competition for at least 1 rotation slot the Spring. Plus it would free up some payroll to address the bench.

  57. Yankee Trader

Rosenthal now says 6 minutes later that Mets “trying” to work on a deal for Putz!! What a putz!!

  58. ariel

Is this “admitting to an interest”?

“Not yet. It might be advantageous to do at some point,” so said Big Hank when asked if Manny is to be made an offer.

  59. PAT M

Man I just been reading the most recent developments….I’m still very leary about Lowe…..CB provided some positive stats, but I just have an uneasy feeling…But he least downside in certain aspects…They all are not without concerns……AJ / Sheets/ Penny / Lowe…….So many factors to be considered…….Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree…Hank’s anamosity towards Boston carries on from the Old Man, which is why he’s pushing in the press the virtues of Manny…It would be a in your face momment….

  60. ariel

Can you imagine a guy named “Putz” playing in NY?

  61. Drive 4-5

    ariel,

    Did Hank say that recently?

  62. ariel

It is rumored that George has two words for Hank each morning…”Get Manny”.

  63. BBB

just say no to Lowe, yo!

  64. Noreaster

    Brian,
I feel tweaked…but besides that…The Sox have 1 player from their farm system in their starting staff and the Yankees *may* have 3 if Andy is resigned and two that are young. Youth movements take time, Hughes was the 10th youngest pitcher (out of 120+) in the AFL (and he didn’t steal any laptops!).

  65. S.o.S.

Who knows. Maybe we can use our chips to get a centerfielder or a stud first baseman. The good thing is everyone accepts stud pitching. Something we have an abundance of. We hold the cards. Remember that red sox. It only gets better from here.

  66. ariel

    Drive,

Hank said that, as reported by Pete, right after the period of exclusivity ended.

  67. Noreaster

Drive 4-5, I understand where you are coming from, but those guys are not ready and the new stadium is opening this year…the push is on for number 27. Someone will get hurt this year, one or both will get a chance to pitch…

  68. Yankee Trader

Guessing the next big starting pitcher to change teams will be Peavy to the Cubs in a three way deal with the Phillies.

Second to go will be Burnett to the Yankees, closer to his wife’s home in Baltimore.

Will the Yankees then round out their rotation on a two year deal with Sheets or a one year with Pettitte??

  69. Brian (Red Sox fan)

Noreaster – Your point(s) have some validity, but I might suggest that the Sox will have 4 position players under 30 in their opening day lineup. Your 9:22 post skirts that fact.

  70. Drive 4-5

    ariel,

I know you & I disagree about Manny. I want nothing to do with him. Here in Mass. the only thing I agree on with Red Sox fans is their intense hope that he gets burned for his behavior this year.

I do find all the vitriol from Red Sox fans concerning Sabathia amusing. They talk “home grown” but forget the ‘04 World Series Sox had only 3 home grown players and featured the (then) highest paid left fielder and starting pitcher in all of baseball. Also, the ‘06 Sox broke the ‘04 Sox record for the highest payroll to ever win a World Series.

  71. Noreaster

    Brian, Give me a second…

  72. Al from BK

Knicks destroying the Nets just as I predicted.

  73. Joe L from YO

maybe this is crazy. but does anyone else see the sense in the yankees signing jason varitek?

im a yankee fan. i hate the red sox. but there are a few i respect.

lets say jorge cant catch. yes..we have molina to spell him..and jose has proved he can handle the staff. but what about tek? switch hitter…vet. can he play 1st base? he can surely dh part time as well…all in all…does it make sense?

  74. Noreaster

Brian, Nice stat…Youkilis is 30 this year…and I’m not buying Lowrie as a long term answer at SS, he is more of a 2B…BTW, who is your catcher this year? (Tweak)

  75. Noreaster

Joe L from YO, Molina is a better hitter AND catcher than Tek right now…

  76. Joe L from YO

agreed. and at that, id rather have pudge in the mix then tek.

    still, its an interesting thought.

here’s to jorge having an awesome year. we need him to.

    cc,wang,pettite,sheets,joba.

wish moose didnt hang it up

  77. Brian (Red Sox fan)

Noreaster – the good thing about this year’s Sox catcher is that he will be better than Varitek.

P.S. Lowrie was surprisingly good as a defensive SS (one error, OK range). Theo has said that he sees him as a SS, and I think it’s his job to lose.

  78. Noreaster

Brian, Lowrie and Pedroia as middle infielders = no range. Someone has to cover the middle. And no, I’m not buying into Pedroia as a great 2B. I live in MA, the guy is a 110% effort guy, but he has to dive for everything because he has the range of a stone (ok, maybe a little more than that!). And don’t let me mention his arm (which cost you game 7)…

  79. Brian (Red Sox fan)

Noreaster – agreed that Lowrie and Pedroia have limited range …. but they are both very sure-handed and throw accurately.

And they don’t take plays off ……

  80. trade for peavy!

    peavy deal breaking down again

  81. Noreaster

Brian-Ouch, Cano is such a talent, 342 a few year ago, makes unreal plays in the field…I hope he puts it together this year…but you have to like Pedroia’s ‘dirt dog’ attitude.

  82. Brian (Red Sox fan)

Noreaster – Cano’s problem is that he himself is also of the opinion that he is “such a talent.” Pedroia has remarkable “baseball talent,” but keeps pushing himself regardless.

Cano just wants to be “cool.”

  83. Noreaster

Brian, I’ve seen Cano enough in person to agree with you. My bet is that he gets it at some point. Remember, this is a guy who in a down year hit 14 HR and 74 RBI and has hit 342 in the majors…For today, I’ll take the guy with upside…The Pedrioa had a nice year, but your 1B was the MVP of your team this year, not him…

  84. Paco Dooley

The collusion charge will surface from Boras eventually. He can’t imagine that teams actually want to avoid a guy that is unprofessional, a total pain and a bit of a jerk. Wow, why wouldn’t a team want that guy? I for one am happy to see the trend in pro sports that teams avoid trouble makers
