It would appear that Derek Jeter is sticking with the United States for the World Baseball Classic. How do we know this?
He’s on stage right now taking part in a press conference to promote it.
Back later with his thoughts on CC Sabathia.
“I think he’s a large black man.”
I could have sworn Derek Jeter’s grandma’s brother’s son’s cousin was born in South Africa, why doesn’t he play for them? They could really use him after that 2006 debacle.
Steve, clearly it wasn’t his father’s LIFELONG DREAM.
Are we sure that Derek’s sticking with the US team? Somebody go ask his Mother what team she’s dreamed of him playing for.
This is news?
You think team USA starts him at SS over Rollins?
I bet Jeter is thrilled about A-Rod switching to the DR, maybe now they’ll advance a few rounds…
“You think team USA starts him at SS over Rollins?”
He’s on the stage, Rollins isn’t.
Good job Cap. He makes the US team that much stronger.
Okay, now we need to sign Sheets. Its a no brainer. We can sign a guy with that much talent without having to give up a pick for him? We have to sign him. I’ve heard of a 2 year deal for $26 with Yanks options for a 3rd and 4th year. That would be amazing! Pete, have you heard about this? Man, I hope we sign Sheets.
…Not to be greedy but if we can sign Sheets AND Lowe we can move Joba back to the pen permanently.
The Braves want to go 5/80 for AJ? If that’s the case, the Yankees have to move on. Too much for AJ.
That means, no AJ in Boston or terrorizing the Yankees again in the AL. That’s good news.
It also means Derek Lowe and/or Ben Sheets are up next.
Let’s look at the Yankee off-season so far.
They got a versatile guy (Swisher) who is a huge upgrade defensively at first base. He’s athletic, under 30 and only makes 7 million a year. He’s also a SH, who sees as many pitches as any hitter in the league.
They got the best pitcher in baseball, who is only 28 years old.
Whether its 3/69 or 7/160, they got their man. Again, another under 30 player.
They made the proper call on not offering arbitration to Abreu or Pettitte. Both guys would have accepted because neither have any offers close to what they were making in 2007 in the current marketplace.
For all the grief Cashman got over that move, it has turned out to be the right call, given the way the bottom has dropped out of the OF market.
Going to be interesting to see how they round out the pitching staff. Right now, its looking good.
“I bet Jeter is thrilled about A-Rod switching to the DR, maybe now they’ll advance a few rounds…”
Cause David Wright is so much more “clutch”?
Lowe “favoring the Yankees” per Heyman on FAN
I just heard the news about sabathia – just got home. Awesome Job and kudos to cashman for pushing hard and sticking with it. After CC left vegas, with a san fran meeting coming up, I was getting very worried that this was going to drag out until january and cc would accept a deal to the angels or giants. But I guess in the end, it was a PROCESS and we got our guy. Thank god because besides that fact that we desperately need him – CC taking a lesser offer would have just been downright embarrassing to the yankees.
I hope if Lowe is signed, that he is more of a replacement for pettitte than a replacement for sheets/Burnnett. Id prefer CC, Wang, Sheets/Burnett, Lowe, Joba to CC, Wang, Lowe, Pettitte, Joba. I would take Lowe or Pettitte – im really undecided on that one because Lowe would probably be better but pettitte would be much much cheaper and for only one year. I hope we sign two of Sheets/Burnett/Lowe/Pettitte in the next week or so and cash focuses the rest of his efforts on trying to upgrade the offense because that will take far more creativity and not just throwing money on FAs.
I heard yesterday if we sign 3 of these pitchers (lets say CC, Sheets, Pettitte) – we are not allowed to go after Tex or Manny even though we still may have the money to do it because sheets and pettitte should be around 25 mil for the both of them. Can anybody confirm that this is in fact true?
If that is the case – we really only have 2 options. We could sign somebody like Dunn who was never offered arbitration or we could go the trade route. I am not very enthusiastic about Ankiel or Cameron. I think we need someone with a solid obp and some power to essentially replace giambi/abreus bats in the lineup at a younger age and cheaper price. Swisher was a nice pickup to see if he can turn it around but like cano, matsui and posada, we are banking on a comeback year. We need somebody proven and solid with the bat who can play first base or the outfielder preferably centerfield.
I thought for sure he’d be playing for the All-Jeter team.
SJ,
Rumors were floating around last night that the yanks may also be willing to offer burnett five years at a higher annual rate so you never know. Im hoping for Sheets and one of Lowe/Pettitte but preferably pettitte. Let Burnett go to the braves so we never have to face him again or pay him.
Hey everyone,
I’m debating whether or not to start blogging, but today I made my first post. It is my reaction to the CC Sabathia pending deal, I hope everyone will take a look.
And Pete, Thank You for your assistance with my paper! Please keep up the good work!
*Obligatory shot @ arod*
maddona clutch maddona maddona purple lipstick playoffs
*obligatory CC pun*
fat, phat, CC Ya!
amidoinitrite?
The Yankees just locked up the big, lefty power bat when they came to terms with CC.
It did occur to me that if it meant getting him they should just let him hit when he pitches. It would have been worth it. There was all this talk about how he liked hitting and he seems pretty good at it for a pitcher.
I’m on board with Ankiel for center, the dude’s got a cannon.

I just can’t see how 5 years and $80 million is bad for Burnett, but 4 years and $66 million is good for Lowe. While I’d hate to go 5 years on Burnett, he’s a superior pitcher to Lowe, hands down. If Lowe has a 5 ERA in the AL East next year, would anyone be surprised? I wouldn’t that’s for sure. I’d rather overpay for Burnett, then sign Lowe. Lowe was abysmal his last two years in Boston. I know, I’m from here.
Well, what country would Jeet be playing for if not the U.S. — Michigan?
I don’t really understand what his race has to do with anything “jay destro” that was uncalled for. Please don’t make things about race..yet about baseball. I’m really happy that Jeets is going to play in the WBC..although he isnt the better SS on that team with Rollins playing. I just hope all Yankees playing is this WBC stay injury free for the Yankee games.
Oh and I’m over the moon about CC
