Girardi excited about his new ace

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Dec 10, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The beat writers for every team just had lunch with respective managers (soup, chicken and pasta, some sort of chocolate dessert) at the Bellagio. Joe Girardi was a gracious host as we talked about different subjects.

Girardi, like Brian Cashman, isn’t going to talk at length about Sabathia until the deal is complete. But Girardi talked about how much he liked Sabathia personally and what a good athlete he is. “Its exciting to think about,” Girardi said.

The Yankees are obviously giddy about what they have accomplished. But they also need to fill those two other spots in the rotation.

Now Girardi can keep his uniform number

  2. Matt December 10th, 2008 at 5:34 pm

This is a good sign for the Yankees. Now they need one more starter and they are set. Unless they go after a 1st baseman or centerfielder, which I dont think they will.

  3. Stacey December 10th, 2008 at 5:36 pm

Just say that the deal is done, Joe.
    Enough with the dishonesty!

    From the last thread:

“I’m not sure if this even exists but is there a number of wins that a replacement level TEAM would have? ”

    Patrick,

This number is very well known. In fact its sort of the basis for the notion of a replacement level player. Or at least a logical implication of the idea.

That said there is a major disagreement over what this number should be set at.

Keith Woolner at baseball prosectus invented the idea of replacement level. He basically defined a team of replacment level players as a team that would win around 25 games in a season.

Woolner’s invention of replacement level was terrific. Unfortunately how he put the idea into practice wasn’t great.

In short – he set the level of replacement much too low. So low that it no longer fit his own definition.

One of the things baseball prospectus did was to basically say their replacement level players would be very bad both offensively and defensively.

Instead of a player like Gardner – replacement bat with a plus glove. They kind of set replacement so the replacment level CF would like Garnder’s bat and Nate McClouth’s glove. That player would never be in the majors. He’s not even marginally acceptable.

This also gets into a bigger issue with baseball prospectus – their defensive statistics are horrendous. They’re based on something called the davenport translations from one of their founders clay davenport and are completely outdated. Really bad. So its hard to take their wins above replacement stat seriously in any way.

A much better estimate for what a replacment level team would win is around 47 wins. That’s a good one. Around there. That comes from Tom Tango and the way he puts it together makes a lot of sense.

    Stacey –

At this point, it isn’t “done” yet…needs to take his physical, and there is probably some contract language that needs to be straightened out; I am sure there will be a perk or two included in this thing.

So, I don’t blame a GM or a manager for saying “it’s not done” until the press conference is set up, and CC puts on that uniform.

  7. Laura December 10th, 2008 at 5:40 pm

Now that CC is out of the way, the AJ stove is heating up. I really hope we get outbid. I just think that AJ is an injury waiting to happen. I don’t want Lowe either, but I think he’ll see the mound more than AJ will. In a perfect non-injured world, I’d take Sheets in a heartbeat.

If forced to choose, I’d do *Lowe-Pettite* for the other two spots.

  8. Laura December 10th, 2008 at 5:41 pm

“So, I don’t blame a GM or a manager for saying “it’s not done” until the press conference is set up, and CC puts on that uniform.”

I hope the jersey manufacturer doesn’t run out of fabric. :P

Assuming CC’s already here, the Four & Five spots need to be filled; Pete-any inclination how Cash might rank the 3 FAs (Burnett, Lowe, Sheets) in relation to re-signing Pettitte?

  10. Nick in SF December 10th, 2008 at 5:49 pm

I just heard for the first time that Davey Johnson is the WBC Team USA manager.

I forgive you, Arod, now I finally understand!

  11. We need the big guy!! December 10th, 2008 at 5:50 pm

I don’t think there is any chance that the Yanks top the Braves $80m offer for Burnett. If they did offer him that, he is definitely not worth it. If I was the Yankees I would offer Pettitte $10-12m kinda move it or lose it. I would much rather have Sheets for 2 years with an option even with the chance that he gets hurt then to take Pettitte back for 1 year. With Sheets you get the option of another 2 years…Everyone knows that Pettitte is most likely going to retire after this year. The Yanks don’t owe him anything and that money is plenty for him. If Pettitte doesnt take it then go hard after Sheets, and or Lowe.

  12. Joe Monte December 10th, 2008 at 5:51 pm

The Yankees should sign one more starting pitcher and allow the 5th spot to be open to Hughes / Kennedy / Aceves and three veteran pitchers (minor league contracts). It would only make sense to bring in another elite SP if the Yankees are going to put Joba as the 5th SP to restrict the number of innings he throws in 2009.

  13. will December 10th, 2008 at 5:54 pm

Any truth to the rumor that the Sox made an offer to Andy?

  14. Boston Dave December 10th, 2008 at 5:55 pm

“It would only make sense to bring in another elite SP if the Yankees are going to put Joba as the 5th SP to restrict the number of innings he throws in 2009.”

That is exactly what they will do.

  15. Boston Dave December 10th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

“Any truth to the rumor that the Sox made an offer to Andy?”

Highly doubtful. They would sign him if they could but it would be for less than the Yankees are offering and he knows how bad of a decision it would be to play for the Sox.

They have just as good a chance of bringing back Clemens.

  16. Phil December 10th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

The 5th spot will be Joba’s to control his innings.

  17. Sid_Rissi December 10th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

“Guillen – “We are not in any trade talk with the Yankees right now.”

  18. Geoff Leopard December 10th, 2008 at 5:57 pm

I think Sheets & Pettitte are much more attractive options than Lowe/Burnett. Then the Yankees can still have Tex, which obviously we have no choice but to pursue at this point.

  19. Matthew Cohen December 10th, 2008 at 5:58 pm

The problem is that Sheets is also really a 5th starter in terms of his innings (not his skills).

You would really want to limit his innings imo to make sure he is ok for the playoffs.

  20. Joe from Long Island December 10th, 2008 at 5:59 pm

It looks like it’s going to be Sheets or Lowe, and if Andy doesn’t get his act together, it will be Sheets AND Lowe.

Andy’s got a great history, etc,. but he and his agent need to get it together.

  21. Boston Dave December 10th, 2008 at 6:01 pm

“Then the Yankees can still have Tex, which obviously we have no choice but to pursue at this point.”

    Are you serious?

  22. Boston Dave December 10th, 2008 at 6:02 pm

“The problem is that Sheets is also really a 5th starter in terms of his innings (not his skills).

You would really want to limit his innings imo to make sure he is ok for the playoffs.”

Agreed. Which is why I think the Yankees should have a rotation of 6 guys. CC and Wang go every 5 days while the other 3 spots are rotated among 4-5 guys.

I believe Pete has written about this idea in the past.

  23. Sid_Rissi December 10th, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Lowe is a better deal than Burnett. Lowe is reliable, he may be old but he is a sinker baller so is age is not as relevant. Burnett has red flags written all over him.
Sheets or Pettitte? That would be a toss up with a slight edge to Pettitte. He deserves a shot to pitch in the new ball park.

  24. vinny-b (bring back Petitte and sign Sheets at 2 yrs) December 10th, 2008 at 6:05 pm

why not trade him, and all our other starting pitching prospects? Cuz if we sign Burnett/Lowe etc, there will be no place to play them.

sorry. I like the CC deal, but the rest of this talk is overkill. The organization is losing its focus.

  25. S.o.S. December 10th, 2008 at 6:05 pm

    from the last thread
Im reading that they can get 2 of the Sheets,Burnett,Lowe. Wouldnt it be better to get Teix with some of that money instead of 2 of those pitchers? Wouldnt be less of a risk? Maybe Teix and Pettitte or which ever one would take 12 mill or less.

    Boston Dave,
On your question about Penny. I would take a flier on him on a 1 or 2 year incentive laden deal. If he cant handle the innings then we can transform him into a Smoltz/Wood in the bullpen.

  26. mel December 10th, 2008 at 6:06 pm

Nobody wants to go 5 for AJ, so just give him 4/$75. It’s barely under the Braves total offer and he can hit free agency a year earlier.

Look at the amount we’re talking about. Look at how ridiculously small that dollar figure looks.

  27. We need the big guy!! December 10th, 2008 at 6:07 pm

Cash’s comment about going to CC’s house is really funny…

When he walked into Sabathia’s home last night and was being shown around or at least to wherever they were going to meet, he told Sabathia “I’ve been here before.”
Cashman said he and his wife had been watching MTV Cribs (yes, for real) a couple years ago and Sabathia’s home had been featured. Sabathia laughed at that.

    “Boston Dave,

I agree. If the bidding for the top FA gets out of hand, why not sign guys like this to short term deals? It seems to me like Lowe and Burnett are getting ridiculous deals.

What are the odds that both Lowe and Burnett turn out to be worth the contracts they are going to get? Not good, IMO.

The Yankees need to fill holes in the rotation, but if you can err on the side of caution and sign shorter deals (Sheets included), I like that idea better.

  32. S.A.- CC you soon Mr. Sabathia December 10th, 2008 at 6:11 pm

i only saw a headline about the sox/andy the other day. i didn’t click on or read the artice. but did they even speak with andy or his agent? or was the question asked to the sox if andy was a possibility?

No need to pay so much for AJ, all these pitchers do the same stuff, right?

  38. mel December 10th, 2008 at 6:18 pm

    SoS,

Excuse me? Who lost twice to Toronto?

  39. S.o.S. December 10th, 2008 at 6:19 pm

Players that would never ever never play for the sox on the yankees.

    Jeter
    Posada
    Rivera
    Pettitte
    Joba
    Damon

  40. YankeeRay December 10th, 2008 at 6:20 pm

Francessa is an idiot. Minaya just threw him a big fat softball and he missed it. While talking about Manny, Minaya said that he is hearing that there is a large chunk of an offer out there for Manny that he hasn’t taken yet.
Francessa was so caught up in his own thinking of another question in kidding Manaya about his interest in Manny that he didn’t even catch what Minaya said and missed an opportunity to dig into the potential offer and from what team.

    Weak on his part.

  41. Doreen December 10th, 2008 at 6:20 pm

But Damon already played for the Sox. :)

  42. S.o.S. December 10th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

  43. mel December 10th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

    Nick,

That’s right. Wang, Joba, Hughes, and co. would make a great rotation.

But Mr. Big Mouth made promises they had to keep.

And yes, I like AJ. But I won’t fall apart if we don’t get him. I promise!

    CC
    Wang
    AJ
    Pettitte
    Joba

How great does that look. We could even get away with Gardner’s offense with that crew.

  44. mel December 10th, 2008 at 6:24 pm

And, Nick, it’s only overpaying by a sane amount. Not like $20-60M or anything. ;)

  45. Tom December 10th, 2008 at 6:25 pm

ESPN needs closed captions for Clinton Portis.

  46. bru December 10th, 2008 at 6:27 pm

i think if we get 2 more pitchers like lowe & pettitte we have the red sox beat.

    cc—–becket
    wang—lester
    lowe—dice-k
    pettitte—wakefield
    joba—?????

1-3 is close but we probably beat them in the 4th & 5th spots

  50. BX 44 December 10th, 2008 at 6:35 pm

Yankees need to go in and snatch Manny now.

There is no market for him, grab him, put him behind A-Rod for 2 years, and win a World Series.

  51. S.o.S. December 10th, 2008 at 6:36 pm

Just read that the Suns are trading Diaw and Bell for Jason Richardson. I think thats a bit much. Thoughts?

  52. no.27 December 10th, 2008 at 6:37 pm

I can’t believe Lowe is getting offers of $65mil for 4 years and Burnett could get $91 mil over 5 years.

The Yankees need to stay away from these guys. They are no better than 3 starters this year and would be getting $16 and $18 mil per year. The next year they would be 4 starters behind CC, Wang, and Joba, and probably not much better than Hughes. It doesn’t make any sense.

They need to get Pettitte signed to that 1 year deal. Even if they do decide to sign another free agent pitcher, they would have a much better chance at signing them to a reasonable deal.

Tex and even Dunn make much more sense than giving these guys this much money to be a 3rd starter for a year and then a 4th starter at best for the rest of their contract. Aren’t they supposed to be cutting the pay roll?

  53. YankeeRay December 10th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

    YankeeRay

I’m guessing he was speaking of the Dodger offer that Boras never responded to.

Pat, I don’t think so. It sounded more like a new offer and we already knew about the Dodger offer that has been taken off the table.
Could be though but I had a sense it was something new that Minaya had heard of. It would have been nice foe Mike to at least ask what he meant instead of moving on to his own question as usual.

  54. Forntoso December 10th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

    Lowe = Kevin Brown.

Having a career year in the NL West isin’t any reason to give him $64 million.

Burnett is fragile and hasn’t pitched more than 200 innings except in contract years.

Sheets is a better investment than the both of them, mostly because he will demand 2-3 less years than the both of them and has the highest upside.

  55. S.o.S. December 10th, 2008 at 6:42 pm

    bx 44,
Im all for it but where do you put him? We dont have a green monstor for him to wait for balls to bounce back thats over his head. Does he become Damons cuttoff man?
DH? Matsui needs to be traded. Good luck trading him and his 2 bum knees.

  60. ariel December 10th, 2008 at 6:50 pm

    SOS,

If you listen to Donnie Baseball, Manny plays a pretty good LF….were it not for the ESPN Manny being Manny clips played over and over, his rep mite not be that bad…tho none of the guys otherwise in LF are exactly Gold Glove winners.

That said, he really is a DH. Were he to “leave his glove at the door” and focus only on hitting..right behind Arod…the results would be off the charts.

As to Matsui, and as nice a fellow as he is, with two bum knees and all, one false move and he is on the DL. So too for some of these other rapidly aging and declining roster occupants. Attempts should be made to move some, but, realistically, the DL will take care of the problem.

  61. S.o.S. December 10th, 2008 at 6:51 pm

    forntoso,
I agree with Sheets being a better route to go because of the fewer years he will ask for. I dont think that Lowe is Brown though. Brown had back problems with the Dodgers before he even came to us. I think he would do better but is still not worth what hes asking. The biggest difference between the 2 is i dont think his fist likes walls.

I was originally against even discussing Manny. However Manny would only need a 2 year deal and the Dodgers have sort of grown tired of his shenanigans. A-Rod getting backed up bye best buddy Manny would be great. I’ll admit Manny is a punk but he would be playing for his home town team and you know what you’ll get from him .300/35/120.

You wonder what the effects of all these long term contracts will be on Yankee pitching prospects. If the Yanks commit long term to CC and say a Burnett or Lowe and commit to Wang and Joba and Hughes as part of their plans, what chance does an Aceves, Pope, Brackman or Kennedy have?

  78. pat December 10th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

    :D

Actually all of my tagline predictions have been right on the money. I picked the World Series teams and the World Series winner. And now CC.

I don’t think I have predicted anything in my tagline that hasn’t come true. (I didn’t predict we’d get Mussina, but I sure wanted him back!)

  85. mdwebguy December 10th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

Yanks offer CC 7 years 160 million
Yanks to offer Tex 10 years 210 million
Yanks offer AJ Burnett 5 years 85 million
Yanks offer Lowe 5 years 80 million
Yanks offer sheet 2 years 26 million

Which ones are the bad deals?

  86. Al from BK December 10th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

If they sign Burnett they really shouldn’t sign Lowe. Lowe is Kevin Brown part 2, they need to sign Andy at 1 year and be done with the pitching bonanza. In 2 years I believe we will be looking at a rotation of:

    CC
    Wang
    AJ
    Joba
    Hughes

    I like :)

  87. S.o.S. December 10th, 2008 at 7:04 pm

YankeeRay I’m with you on AJ. Brilliant move. They’ll see (the ones who don’t want him.)

  93. ariel December 10th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

I sense that Manny has been on the radar since day 1, with a low profile being maintained given the presence of Boras.

It is recalled that at the time of the executive meetings in Tampa in early November, Hank reportedly stepped out for a cigarette break and in response to an inquiry blurted out ““And personally, I like Manny. He’s one of the greatest hitters in the history of the game. He’s a free spirit for sure, but he knows how to win.” When the “fair game” period commenced in early Nov,in response to a question as to whether Manny would be presented with an offer, Hank stated “not now, possibly later”.

Well, Hank is a blowhard, he doesn’t speak for management, Hal calls the shots, he didn’t say it, Cashman didn’t either so it’s clear that “there is no chance that the Yankees will pursue Manny, blah, blah, blah”.

On the other hand, and given the timing, one can argue with equal if not greater force that these “throw-aways” or “dropings” were calculated to let it be known that when the priority needs (pitching) were fulfilled, Manny would be addressed. Knowing how Boras operates and given the market one could reasonably anticipate that Manny would be available down the line. And he is, and will be. My bet is that the Yankees will be there.

  94. Nick in SF December 10th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

Gammons is not smiling at all, maybe there’s some truth to this AJ smoke.

  95. Al from BK December 10th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

Even Yankee hater Steve Phillips admitted the Yankees bullpen is “one of the best in the game”.

  96. CB December 10th, 2008 at 7:08 pm

Gammons is having a draft recap moment.

AJ Burnett is Gerritt Cole all grown up.

  97. We need the big guy!! December 10th, 2008 at 7:08 pm

The bottom line is if the Yanks want Burnett…or any player obviously..they will get him. The Braves would have to rob a bank to out bid them. I just hope they don’t want him as bad as the offers look like they do.

  98. no.27 December 10th, 2008 at 7:09 pm

The Yankees will end up paying Burnett more money per start than CC Sabathia.

  99. mdwebguy December 10th, 2008 at 7:09 pm

JoeT 28 in 10 – I’m going by current market offer and adding a little. Tex said he wants to be a Yankee and on the east coast. The Nats and O’s will never be good. If he goes there he’ll be traded in 2 years

  100. trisha - CC will opt to be a Yankee. December 10th, 2008 at 7:09 pm

Why does anyone think that Tex would leave the Angels? I don’t know enough about him but it seems that he’s been pretty happy and effective there.

Manny? What a joke. I heard that the travelling secretary’s union got together and threatened to picket if any team signed Manny.

    :D

Hey maybe nobody wants to take on his petulant personality.

  101. YankeeRay December 10th, 2008 at 7:10 pm

“Just got in and turned on ESPN to learn that the Yanks have supposedly offered AJ 5 years!”

    This is GOOD?!?!?!?!

You’re excited about a guy that is a near-lock to NOT make all his starts? That walked the 5th most guys in baseball in his “career year”?

To be the 3/4 starter???? What’s the point?

Sheets on a 2 year deal with a vesting third year, and Pettitte for 1/12. Hughes/Kennedy/Aceves are insurance against Sheets going down and against Joba’s innings cap. Why would people want AJ Burnett for FIVE years? He averages 140 IP a season!

  103. ariel December 10th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Imagine how Gammons will look the first time Manny bashes one over the Monster, and another, and another. He would be as focussed wearing the Pinstripes in Fenway as he was in Dodger Blue from August through the playoffs.

As my Aunt Bessie used to say “it should only happen”!!!!

Meanwhile Dan Duquette just said that the Yankees are still a third place team even with the signing of two top-notch pitchers and said they will remain there behind the Rays and Sux unless the Yankees (straighten out their farm system?) Can’t remember what he identified as the achilles heel.

Anyone care to comment on his theory?

  108. We need the big guy!! December 10th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

The Yanks are not signing 2 more free agent pitchers. It will be 1 of them and Pettitte. Pettitte comes on only a 1 year deal so he would seem to be more interesting to sign.

  109. Al from BK December 10th, 2008 at 7:12 pm

The Toronto Blue Jays had excellent pitching in .08 and finished in 4th place. The Yankee offense needs to help. They don’t have a legitimate bat to hit in the #3 spot in front of ARod. All of these millions will have been spent for naught unless the offense is addressed between now and Opening Day.

What do you expect Duquette to say he hates the Yankees. This is just him being jealous. The Yankees currently have 2 guys down on the farm that will be top 50 pitchers come next year(Brackman, Betances) not to mention a ton of quality bull pen arms(Claggett, Whelan, Melancon, Sanchez, Coke) and a future position studs in Montero and Ajax. I expect this amount of jealousy from other teams.

  121. ariel December 10th, 2008 at 7:17 pm

“If” Manny is signed, the offensive power and consistency should be such that Gardner or Melky could be carried in CF even with their presumed weak bats. Though I would not be surprised if Melky rebounded from last year’s dismal performance and continued what appeared to be positive development in 07.

  122. CB December 10th, 2008 at 7:18 pm

The yankees have thankfully solved their late inning set up man problem.

Well being the good company person that I am (so far) I’m happy to say that if the Yankees feel they made good deals, I can rock and roll with them. After all, they are paying the salaries for the numbers of years involved with these pitchers and they really have so much more smarts than fans do.

I truly do believe so, yes I do!

(If they sign Lowe, I will vomit daily but also vow to try to have an open mind… I won’t play both sides of the street and say they were smart about certain deals and not about others, just to satisfy my own selfish wants. I of course will still say novenas that Lowe isn’t signed!)

  137. CB December 10th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

“The Yankees could get Teixeira for less than 2 million more per year. This is NOT a good deal.”

But that’s not the way baseball contracts and the market function.

The variance on the amount players make on a per year basis doesn’t vary all that much based on performance.

Tory Hunter makes $18M/yr. Tex is going to sign for 20-22M.

What distinguishes players in terms of their skill level is the total guaranteed money.

Better players get more years at slightly higher AAV’s.

It’s the years that are being bargained by agents much more so than the AAV.

Look at burnett – his opening AAV was 15M. Now its 17M. That’s an increase of 12%.

But his total guaranteed money has increased by nearly 33%.

And at the same time even if he gets 90M he will only getting 50% of what tex is getting.

  138. Josh from MA December 10th, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Trisha – “Meanwhile Dan Duquette just said that the Yankees are still a third place team even with the signing of two top-notch pitchers and said they will remain there behind the Rays and Sux unless the Yankees (straighten out their farm system?).”

Well CC is taking Moose’s place. We can’t expect much more than 20 wins. Neither Burnett nor Lowe are guaranteed to perform well (or stay healthy). Joba’s status as a starter is questionable considering he got injured after throwing 100 innings. Pettite didn’t have a great season last year. Hughes/Kennedy need to perform on the big stage.

Cano wasn’t his normal self last year. Swisher isn’t exactly a productive player. Arod needs to perform better in the clutch. And no one knows how well Posada will rebound from his surgery.

I’m interested to see how the Rays do this year – was ’08 just a fluke or the beginning of a great run? The Sox will always be tough, espcially considering that they won 95 ganes despite all their injuries last year.

(I can thank all my Sox-fan friends for pointing out everything that can go wrong with the Yanks).

  139. YankeeRay December 10th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

the yankees spending money or not on free agents has nothing to do with the farm system.

they have to draft & develope players also wich is what they are doing and need to continue.

at least by spending money that is there to spend will keep us competing until some of these prospectspan out.

how stupid would it be for a team with a 400 million dollare revenue to spend only 100 million on the team.

the red sox will have around a 150 million dollar payroll, maybe higher and make a less in revenues than the yankees.

take a look at what percentage of revenues teams spend on payroll & see where the yankees stand.

for instance 400 million in revenue & a 200 million dollar team payroll is 50 %.

what is the rays revenue compared to payroll???

What freakin crybabies on ESN! Two radio guys trashing the CC deal. The first one had the nerve to mention the economy (his name is Orlando Alzuguary or something) and the second one (Paul Charcian?) goofed on Cashman saying that the Yankees are in a panic mode since they had vowed to build from within but then went out and got CC for 7 years.

These guys are losers. They are talking about the NY pressure and how CC won’t be able to take the NY pressure. They also said it was pathetic that the Yankees allowed him to have an opt out after 3 years, saying it means the Yankees are a desperate organization. The female rag who’s hosting the show – don’t know her name – of course went along with them.

    Jealous crybabies.

Well, the Red Sox bid Matsuzaka with a bid of $51,111,111.11 just to negotiate with Dice-K and he could make another $60M in salary. Well, the Yankees stepped up to the plate! CC and perhaps AJ and hopefully Pettite and Sheets. I am tired of Boston! This is a way to win now and protect the young arms. They can fill in for injuries and in relief and also stretch their arms out!

    Hopefully Manny comes too!!

    C.B. Re: replacement level.

You’re confusing Keith Woolner and Clay Davenport. Clay’s WARP is the one that sets replacement level way too low like the 25 win team). Woolner’s VORp uses his definition of replacement level, which comes from an article in one of the BP annuals (I forget which one). VORPs replacement level is like a 45 win team.
