Pete, great job covering the Winter Meetings. I’ve always thought you were a bright guy, but it’s amazing watching you work your way through the SABR-world and laud run prevention as a key metric.

Would be great to observe you and Murray Chass having a basebal discussion over bratwurst or something.

im praying if they sign two more pitchers its lowe and sheets! pettitte didnt look good last year and we all know burnett lacks heart. btw has anyone been to spring training games? im flying down there in early march and was wondering if i should get tix ahead of time in case they sell out

Ankiel is intriguing! Can relieve and hit, while Sabathia could pinch hit for us.

Cardinals offering Ankiel and another player for JJ Putz.
Kennedy alone would not get Ankiel for this one year Boras rental.

Surprisingly, thought he was a good fielder but made 8 errors with only 4 assists. Cannot hit lefty pitching either.

Jim Callis on a chat today agreed that with the Yankees offering Lowe 4 years at 16 million that means that they don’t want Andy back since they have only offered ~10 million for one year. Makes sense. Bummer.

With Sabathia the current payroll would be around 164M
With Burnett@ 16M that pushes it up to approx. 180M
The payroll was a tad over 207M

If they sign Burnett for 16M/year, what other pitcher do you realistically see them offering a contract to?

At that point, IMO they will not look to take on a 10M CF contract like Cameron-maybe a one year incentive deal to a player like Mark Kotsay and spend a few dollars on Punto leaving the payroll around 195M. Another idea would be to trade some of our pitching for a low cost option like a Skip Schumaker or a Ryan Spillborghs.

Thoughts on how you would round out the team while staying below 200 million?
