Yankees had the right pitch for CC

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Dec 10, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Just spoke to Johnny Damon, who reminded me that he had dinner with CC Sabathia during the season. Michelle Damon, he said, has become friendly with Amber Sabathia over the last few months.

“It’s a great day for us,” Damon said. “We need starters and we got the best one.”

The more you learn, the more you realize that the Yankees played this well. Brian Cashman’s home visit brings back memories of covering college basketball. The coaches used to say then that the home visit was key to land a recruit.

Howie Dickenman, a former UConn assistant (and now the head coach at Central Connecticut State) always said you had to recruit a player’s mom as much as the player.

Or in this case, the player’s wife.

I’m finally through writing my newspaper stories for the day. As more develops, I’m hoping to get some more blog posts up. It’s been a busy day already and it may not be over.

Great job today Pete. Thanks for all the news! Take a break why don’t ya!

Good stuff, Pete. I hope you’re enjoying yourself.

  3. Tseng December 10th, 2008 at 9:32 pm

Sure, we have CC’s solid verbal, but has he signed his letter of intent? What if another team comes in and offers him more playing time or offers to hire his old high school coach…. etc.

CC pushes our recruiting class into the top 3 (esp if you count transfer player Swisher)

I don’t know that much about college basketball.

  4. Tom December 10th, 2008 at 9:32 pm

Is the rule 5 draft tomorrow or Friday?

  5. Yankee Trader December 10th, 2008 at 9:32 pm

    Pete-

When do you go back? Great coverage!

Guessing the next big starting pitcher to change teams will be Peavy to the Cubs in a three way deal with the Phillies.

Second to go will be Burnett to the Yankees, closer to his wife’s home in Baltimore.

Will the Yankees then round out their rotation on a two year deal with Sheets or a one year with Pettitte??

  6. Drive 4-5 December 10th, 2008 at 9:34 pm

    Pete,

Great job covering the Meetings. I come here for my baseball fix because you dont deal in gossip. We appreciate your work, believe me.

    Tomorrow.

Maybe y’all heard this already but ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick is reporting that the Yanks have offered A.J. Burnett a contract with 5 fully guaranteed years…

If CC stops by and reads this blog, I hope he realizes those web page advertisements for “How to lose belly fat” and “Drop 25 pounds in No Time” were actually there before he signed on as a Yankee.

Yeah Pete, fantastic job you’re doing there.

We really appreciate the time you put into this blog. I’ve no idea when you ever get to sleep, but every post makes a difference to us.

id rather not have burnett. im weary of sheets..but i like him better. lets sign lowe and re-sign andy and call it a winter ay?

  15. kissbeavis December 10th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

OK Pete, I’ll buy that it was a great recruiting job. But you have to admit, $60 million more than the next known bid had to help, no? Just think what your boy Calhoun could have done with that kind of scratch at UConn! He’d never have to take a back seat to pretty boy Auriemma!

  16. Corey December 10th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Sheets is cheaper, but theres no guarantee he will perform better than Burnett in the AL. I like burnett because he has pitched in the AL East.

  17. Noreaster December 10th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

J2, website problems aside…me thinks the big A had a few last night!!!

  18. Hightops December 10th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Does anyone know when Barry Zito’s contract runs out? If it’s 3 years from now that would be very interesting as it obviously frees up money for him to opt-out and go West. Not that I am complaining, but if his heart isn’t into it then he shouldn’t have signed. But 3-years of C.C Sabathia and we don’t win at least 1 World Series? Doubtful.

  19. PJH December 10th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

This rotation is nasty. Imagine facing CC, Wang and possibly Burnett and then Joba. 3 absolute flame throwers. Thats how you build a championship team.

We should sign Doug Mientkiewicz as a back up 1st baseman.

  20. Russell NY December 10th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Just throwing in my 2 cents here… heard a beat writer on the radio this afternoon saying other teams aside from the Yankees have seen Sheets’ medical reports and they weren’t overly satisfied. If that is the case, it certainly gives a bit of credibility to signing Burnett. Especially given he has pitched in the AL East and Sheets is a career NL guy. No doubt Sheets might have better stuff but I’ll let bygones be bygones if the Yankees know something about Burnett that we don’t.

  21. Buddy Biancalana December 10th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Why do the Mets want to trade for Putz, they need SP.

  22. Joe L from YO December 10th, 2008 at 9:51 pm

thats true. but for that matter…so has lowe.
i dunno..for me with burnett. its almost personal.
    just dont like the guy.

isnt jeremy affedelt still up for grabs?

  23. Fran December 10th, 2008 at 9:52 pm

Thanks for all of the posts and news Pete. The meetings are certainly proving to be as eventful as we all hoped.

  24. Russell NY December 10th, 2008 at 9:53 pm

Mets are looking at acquiring JJ Putz. I do have to say that could solve their bullpen problems: Putz, K-Rod. Damn that’s nice.

That being said – the combination of Maine, Pelfrey, and an assortment of minor leaguers isn’t going to save them.

I’ll be really disappointed if the Mets can give away Heilman, Endy Chavez, and some random crap prospects to get Putz. All those guys suck.

  25. Phil December 10th, 2008 at 9:53 pm

or Daisuke’s wild pitches. I spent an afternoon at Varitek’s house in Newton, MA and he had huge bruises all over. When asked if they were from catching Daisuke he just smiled and said “maybe”.

    YankeeRay & trisha,

Thanks for fighting the good fight!

    Buddy,

They need a setup guy. The question is does Putz know he’s going to set up??

Everyone was laughing about Putz. Saw some writer’s name on mlbtraderumors.com whose name was Schmuck!

  32. Bronx Jeers December 10th, 2008 at 9:56 pm

    Mets need bullpen help more.

    Santana-Maine-Pelfrey as 1-2-3 They seem to think Neise? is a # 5.

They do need 1 more guy but Omar’s gonna wait till the frenzy is over and maybe lowball Ollie Perez if he’s available.

  33. j2 December 10th, 2008 at 9:56 pm

PJH, What’s the fascination with Minky? Someone else in a few threads ago mentioned him as a possible acquisition. Why?

  34. kissbeavis December 10th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

I keep reading about Burnett and the A.L East, but much (most) of that A.L. East success came from absolutely dominating the Yankees. Take those Yankees bats out of the mix and he was pretty average. To me, that makes 5 years too long a deal for a guy who is so injury prone.

  35. j2 December 10th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Pat, Thanks for the link re Manny. It’s like Christmas Eve, with CC already in a box under the tree.

  36. kissbeavis December 10th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

By the way, thanks for all the updates, Pete. You cost me hours of sleep last night compulsively refreshing your blog once you indicated something was going down.

  37. mel December 10th, 2008 at 10:00 pm

lol. Did you guys see the espnews graphic. CC does well against the AL East. But he was 1-8 with fat ERA against the Yankees. Winning records against the others.

  38. saucy December 10th, 2008 at 10:01 pm

That’s a lot of coin. You make that much and you’re getting paid to be a #1 starter.

  42. ray (sox fan) December 10th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

I’m watching a Boston sports show right now.

Interesting that they are reporting that Derek Lowe is now saying that he is more willing to pitch for the Yankees now that CC is in the rotation.

or is it, if you can beat him, buy him?

  44. Josh Johnson December 10th, 2008 at 10:06 pm

I say add Sheets or Burnett as well as Manny and I’m ready to put my money on the Yankees for next year. Just need to trade away Nady and it could be a wonderful way to erase 08 from everyone’s mind.

  45. Noreaster December 10th, 2008 at 10:07 pm

I live up in the Boston area (I’m from LI), and after 6 WS (as a fan) and 13 ALEast titles, these RedSox fans with 2 WS and 1 ALEast title are obnoxious. We need to bury them this year. Best possible case for me is that we sign Andy and one other SP, then get Manny…

  46. mel December 10th, 2008 at 10:07 pm

    Bronx,

Tough situation for Manny. The Dodgers took their 2/$45M offer off the table. He has zero leverage and even less options. To save face he might say he wants to go home. The question is Mets or Yankees. Yankees would be a better fit because he’s basically a DH, even though Mattingly said he’s a much better fielder than “Manny being Manny” highlights show.

  47. Kevin December 10th, 2008 at 10:07 pm

    Make it happen, Pete.

  48. Forntoso December 10th, 2008 at 10:07 pm

    Get Manny!

Add him to A-Rod to make our lineup the most fearsome in baseball!!!

  49. dave December 10th, 2008 at 10:09 pm

5 years is too long to give to sheets – i have a feeling since the yanks seemed to have given him his asking price of 5 years and 80 million that burnett will eventually take the offer. However, Sheets and Burnett on the same team while sounding dominant may not be the best play.

And Sheets is definitely worth 2 years over Burnett and his 5. I figured the yanks would go after 1 of Sheets/Burnett and 1 of Lowe/Pettitte and then, go after the other one of the pair as a fallback option. It would seem by throwing out 5,4 and 2 year deals which was the asking price for Burnett and Lowe and the expected asking price for Sheets that they may be willing to take any combination of the three. I certainly will be happy with Burnett and Sheets filling out our all star rotation. I thought the yanks would go for an older guy to be the veteran presence and innings eater however.

Burnett and Sheets are both big injury risks but they both have the talent to be top of the rotation starters when healthy and dedicated. I just hope if Burnett signs, we dont start shying away from sheets. Of course, now that the yanks have matched the asking price of all three players their expectations will all probably go up.

Signing Burnett and sheets goes right in line with getting the team younger as well as better – AJ will be 32 in january, Sheets is 30, Sabathia is 28. Throw those in with wang whos 28 and Chamberlain who is 23 we are looking at an average age of a little over 28 – When was the last time we had that with all capable pitchers. The only reason i really get worried about burnetts contract outside of the history is that he is almost 32 – which means in 5 years who will be 36 and he is already quite fragile. But with hughes – 22 and IPK – almost 24 in the wings and betances (age-20) 2 years away – we should be ready when injury arises (which it probably will with burnett and sheets.)

  50. no.27 December 10th, 2008 at 10:09 pm

Signing Manny probably makes more sense than signing Burnett to a $90 million contract.

  51. dave December 10th, 2008 at 10:09 pm

the first sentence is supposed to say 5 years is too long to give to burnett obviously

“Yankees would be a better fit because he’s basically a DH, even though Mattingly said he’s a much better fielder than “Manny being Manny” highlights show.”

I respect Mattingly probably about as much as anyone in baseball but honestly how well can Mattingly make an evaluation of Manny?

He watched Manny for two or three months when Manny was extremely motivated to play for a big contract at the end of the season. The Manny you saw the last two or three months is not the same Manny you see who has a long term contract.

  58. AROD fan December 10th, 2008 at 10:12 pm

And no need to worry about Manny.

There would be no way for the owners to justify that.

  62. mel December 10th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

    CB,

It seems that the Yankees have decided to target the top 2 FA pitchers.

I would’ve preferred Tex + one of them (we all know who!), but since Tex has close to zero chance of coming here pitching, pitching, pitching is the way to go.

Yes, it’s a lot of coin, but half of what CC’s making for 2 less years.

I do like having a lot of co-aces on any given day. Meaning they should beat the opponents best starter. The way rotations lineup is so helter skelter. You hardly line up by the numbers due to double headers, rainouts, injuries, 2/3/4 game sets. If you can get a #1/#2 pitching 4 out of every 5 games, wow. Just wow. Who posted that nifty little stat of the average ERA by starter slot? The 5th starter’s average ERA was 6+.

If Gammons hates it, then it’s good for the Yankees. If you can’t see the yellow teeth, it’s awesome for us.

  63. Vince December 10th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

“I’ll be really disappointed if the Mets can give away Heilman, Endy Chavez, and some random crap prospects to get Putz. All those guys suck.”

Completely agree. Why shouldn’t the Yankees try and package Brian Bruney, Melky Cabrera, and Ian Kennedy? Something to the effect. Then, get enough pitching so Joba could move to the pen.

    2009 Bullpen: Marte < Putz < Joba < Mo

I get goosebumps thinking about that.

  64. dave December 10th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

is this putz rumor for real? Someone would have to pay me to take heilman. And why trade putz not when his value is low?

  67. pat December 10th, 2008 at 10:18 pm

I remember there was a debate when CC went to Milwaukee about his name. I’ve heard people pronounce it 2 different ways today. Is the second “a” pronounced like bath or like paste?

  68. Boston Dave December 10th, 2008 at 10:18 pm

good quote from Theo. Hope the Yankees stick with some of the young guns despite any FA signings.

“These days, if you’re not getting younger and more dynamic, you’re probably falling behind,” Epstein said.”

  69. CB December 10th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

“Is there any proof that Sheets would take a 2 year deal, Or is this all make believe blog stuff?”

No proof. The market for sheets is still undefined. And he hasn’t jumped at the yanks 2 yr/26M offer.

I’m not sure if the yankees or any team really have a true choice between Burnett/Lowe or Sheets.

Just a guess but Sheets may very well want to wait until CC, Burnett and Lowe come off the board leaving him as the only talented pitcher left.

That way the becomes the object of intense bidding by the teams that lost out on the other three.

In that environment its unclear what kind of deal he would get.

Until the bidding got really started it didn’t look like AJ would get anywhere close to 90M.

    But now…

So sure sheets on a 2 year deal may look good. But if Burnett and Lowe come off the board and things get ridiculous with Sheets – sheets for a four year deal may not look real good.

The market is undefined and from what it looks now he very well may get more than 2 years.

  70. NITRO December 10th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

If Putz is available for that crap that the Mets are giving up, we should be on the phone immediately.

We don’t need Putz that badly, but if he was that cheap, you HAVE to get him. He can be a lights out setup man or we can reroute him somewhere as part of a bigger trade.

    Heilman and Endy Chavez? really?

  71. dave December 10th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

    Tom,

the info on here as just as good as some of the info from media this off season- constant contradictions and multiple newswriters said CC wouldnt sign with the yanks not even 24 hours before he signed. An article even came out while cash was in vegas saying THE Yanks had no shot.

  72. Bronx Jeers December 10th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

I actually like Manny as a player. I had the opportunity to see him play a couple of times as a Dodger and I thought he played a “serviceable” left field. Nothing flashy but I would dare say fundamentally sound.

I often think his high jinks in front of the Monster were at times Manny trying to live up to his “persona”.

If the Yanks are just going to spend wildly and go for it in the next 3 yrs, throwing Manny a high salary for 2-3 yrs makes some sense.

  73. Boston Dave December 10th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

Quote of the day came from my 11 yr old daughter who while watching ESPN with me and saw Gammons reporting on Burnett and sabathia offers from Yankees said, unsolicited, “that man doesn’t look like he wants to be there”. She didn’t know what was going on but that was her perseption. He looked like he was getting sick.

“If you can get a #1/#2 pitching 4 out of every 5 games, wow. Just wow. Who posted that nifty little stat of the average ERA by starter slot? The 5th starter’s average ERA was 6+.”

I think this has been cashman’s goal for a while – to create a staff with 3 #1 starters and 2#2′s. I think that’s partly why they’ve been drafting so many high ceiling arms in the draft.

That’s what they are aggressively pursuing now. That kind of staff.

The question now is whether they’ll have enough offense or will they wind up like the 2008 Blue Jays as some have been suggesting.

Don’t think they’ll be the jays but it’s an open question as to whether they’ll hit enough.

And right on time the manny rumors start…

  83. dave December 10th, 2008 at 10:28 pm

I think the mets are giving up six mediocre players for Putz – we could give up 30 mediocre players for putz but who cares? The trade should involve someone decent not a whole bunch of nothing.

  84. ray (sox fan) December 10th, 2008 at 10:29 pm

I find it fascinating that many Sox fans and Yankee fans have done a complete reversal in terms of Manny.

Earlier this year I read many posts on this blog detailing how manny was losing his bat speed, how he was a horrible fielder, and how he camped out at home plate admiring his home runs.

Sox fans defended Manny and put up with his manny “antics”.

Now many Yankee fans can’t say enough good things about manny and Sox fans can’t say enough bad things about him.

I think the truth lies in the middle of these two views.

this is how the deal would b for putz

Under terms of the deal, the Mets would get Putz, outfielder Jeremy Reed and reliever Sean Green. The Mariners would receive reliever Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez and first baseman Mike Carp from the Mets. They’d also get Franklin Gutierrez from the Indians and minor leaguers. The Indians would get reliever Joe Smith from the Mets and infielder Luis Valbuena from Seattle

  88. CB December 10th, 2008 at 10:32 pm

Who knows what’s going on with this rumored Mets trade for Putz but the Mariners new GM Jeff Zduriencik is a very smart guy and a very good evaluator of talent. He ran the brewers draft for a long time and was considered to be one of the best in the business.

Trading Putz while the market for closers is so saturated seems like a strange idea however.

Signing a 37 year old Manny Ramirez to a 3 or 4 year contract is just insane. He’s already turned down 2 years and $45mil.Why would anyone want to pay him $23 -25mil when he’s 40 years old? At that point, he wont even have to fake his injuries.

If we move matsui as a salary dump, people should start talking about manny. Even if he can play the outfield – he wont play it all yea and certainly not center – we cant move nady to center and keep damon in left and have manny in right – that would be the worst outfield in the league. And damon needs to stay in left. So the only way the yanks will ever go after manny is by trading matsui for practically nothing and clearing the dh spot and 13 mil. Then, sign manny with an extra 12 million that we still should have room for … i think. Then, manny could play the field occasionally when someone else has to dh and hit at dh the rest of the time. This is the ONLY way the deal would have to happen – i cant see any other logical way manny comes here. So unless we start hearing matsui trade rumors … i WOULDNT bank on manny. Dunn is still on the market though with his 400 obp and 40 homers. And tex is still a slight possibility – the yanks could sign sheets and pettitte for 25 mil and potentially, still add another 20 mil next year for tex and be slightly under last years payroll – not saying it will happen but it could …

Stay away from Lowe, he’s old, he’s be contaminated by the national league hitters and needs a big ball park when his game is off which is pretty much every other start. Sheets has also been infected with the national league disease, and is injury prone, but is 29, and has soon good raw stuff. Burnett has the best raw stuff, but is 31, injury prone and is asking for long contract. Best bet would be sign Sheets for 2 years, and Pettitte for 1. Yeah it would make us have a surplus of starters, but people get hurt and too much pitching is the best problem you could have. After that i’d see what Man-Ram wants probably give it to him, and then see if anyone’s willing to give up their center fielder for Kennedy + another prospect if not keep Ian.

    Possible Lineup

    Damon/Matsui – LF
    Jeter – SS
    Manny – DH
    A-rod – 3B
    Nady – RF
    Posada – C
    Cano – 2B
    Swisher – 1B
    Gardner/Melky – CF

    Rotation

    CC – Ace
    Wang – #2

    Hughes/Joba/Aceves/Kennedy – #5

CB, Going way back earlier in the day I think I disagree somewhat with your analysis saying the Yankees automatically win by signing CC and still having Hughes as opposed to having traded Hughes for Santana. That’s still to be determined in the years to come.

First, we need to see how CC and Santana pitch in the years to come. If Santana is significantly better than CC, and Hughes never matures, the Yanks still could have blundered not making that trade.

Secondly, assuming the Yankees had signed Santana to a deal similar to what he signed with the Mets, the comparison becomes CC and Hughes vs. Santana and the extra cash the Yankees would have by having Santana at a lesser salary than CC. If the additional money spent on CC prevents the Yankees from filling some other holes because of the money he’s owed, it could still be seen as a worse move than trading for Santana. I’m specifically thinking of signing Teixeira here.

Thirdly, the opt out is a huge factor. If CC has 3 great years then leaves, whereas Santana remains dominant for the remainder of his years with the Mets, not getting Johan could still be a mistake.

Certainly, having signed CC lessens the blow and could make the non-trade for Santana a mute point. However, I still think we need to wait and see if it really proves to be the wiser move.

  107. dave December 10th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

The market is full of closers and putz is coming off a bad year – i dont see why they are trading him for glorified minor leaguers. Seems like the absolute worst time to trade putz.

There has to be some centerfielder out there that a team is willing to trade without getting back too much talent outside of cameron and ankiel.

  108. no.27 December 10th, 2008 at 10:43 pm

The Yankees offense can’t be anywhere near as bad as the Blue Jays. The lineup is still pretty good if Matsui, Posada, Cano, and Swisher have career average years.

The problem is that next year they are going to have to spend a lot of money on offense. Jeter, A-Rod, Cano, Swisher, and old Posada is a weak offense. Jackson, Melky, and Gardner would be the only outfielders signed.

There will be some good outfielders available, but the chances are the Yankees will have to overpay for them just like they are for Burnett. Right now Holliday is the best offensive player, but he’s going to be exposed outside of Colorado. No one is available next year that is nearly as good as Teixeira. There will be some pitchers available that I’d take over Burnett though.

Plus, he would be the #4 or 5, depending on where they want to slot Joba. They could go out an sign John Garland, who will get you 180-200 innings, around a 4.00 era +/- and for alot less then AP’s asking price.

He offered 7 years/160 million with an out. The next highest offer was 5/100. Give it a rest.

“Interesting that they are reporting that Derek Lowe is now saying that he is more willing to pitch for the Yankees now that CC is in the rotation.”

Wouldn’t you after seeing the money CC got?

“If CC has 3 great years then leaves”

That’s one thing you don’t have to worry about. If he has three great years, there’s no way the Yanks let him walk. He gets an extension into his late 30′s. Granted, that’s better than being horrendous/getting hurt and not exercising the clause; if he helps the team win one or two titles, it softens the blow of having to pay him for far less production later. Either way, chances are we’ll be looking at the back end of this deal the same way we looked at Giambi’s deal the last few years.

And the Mets are adding Putz to K-Rod now? Phew. Mets-Sox Series anyone?

I am getting a little PS3 atm but bear with me.

Yanks sign Burnett and Pettitte at 16 million per and 12 million per respectively. Then once Boras figures the market for Manny is dead they offer Manny a 2 year 40 million dollar deal. Manny might jump at 20 million per figuring he is lucky to get that and get to play for the home team.

    Rotation:
    CC Sabathia
    Chien Ming Wang
    AJ Burnett
    Andy Pettitte

  127. CB December 10th, 2008 at 10:57 pm

“If Santana is significantly better than CC, and Hughes never matures, the Yanks still could have blundered not making that trade.”

I partially agree with what you wrote. You only included Hughes but you have to look at all of the players they would have lost in the trade.

The yankees traded one additional season of santana for CC, Hughes, Kennedy, Melky, and Mitch Hillgoss.

Perhaps that’s not a trade you would make but I can’t see how the yankees don’t come out way ahead.

The key thing you wrote was : “If Santana is significantly better than CC..”

That’s the only way taking Santana would come out ahead. Santana would have to not only be marginally better – he’d have to be much, much better than CC to make up for the surplus value of Hughes, Kennedy, Melky, and Hilgoss which is considerable.

And even right now CC is a better pitcher than Santana is at this moment. CC has been better than Santana over the past two years.

So the probability of santana being “much” better is very low.

The only way it doesn’t work is if CC gets hurt and Santana stays healthy but that’s so difficult to predict. And santana has already lost some of his stuff so he has that working against him.

I think the yankees win very big on this deal – mostly because I see no way that the 2008 yankees + santana would win the world series. Rest of the team was too flawed.

I think its a huge win – now they can pair CC with Hughes in the rotation next year.

We’ll see. But based on probabilities its a significantly better deal for the yankees. But that’s just my opinion.

  137. dave December 10th, 2008 at 11:00 pm

GREAT TAKE ON THE OPT OUT CLAUSE from Ken Davidoff:

“As long as CC is healthy in three years, he’ll be gone, you’ve got to figure. By that point, Barry Zito will have just two years remaining on his seven-year, $126-million deal with the Giants, so San Francisco should be more open to bringing him aboard.

At least with the opt-out, the whole thing is a little more honest. The Yankees and Sabathia are going to use each other – the Yankees because their homegrown guys aren’t ready yet, and Sabathia because the Giants aren’t ready yet for him. It’s a marriage of convenience.”

And if somehow the Yanks actually pursue & sign him, I’ll still have a ton of bad things to say about him. There are silent legions of us who haven’t changed our minds about him and won’t. The voices you hear (or read here) are all from the babbling bandwagon minority.

I hope the guy has to sign for less than half what the Sox paid him per year if he doesn’t get the Barry Bonds treatment. And if he does sign for less than half (preferably significantly less than half) it’s for a team no closer to the Bronx than Queens. But since he’s strictly a DH and that limits him to the AL, the closest he’ll get is Baltimore or Toronto. That would be fine with me.

The only problem I could foresee is if he is doing badly or injured and doesnt opt out – but that wouldnt be a problem with the clause as much as the entire thing so its more or less irrelevant and Im sure he will be great.

That is very true Rob. However, the big difference with Tex is that I think there are east coast teams that will make comparable offers to what the Angels offer.

I think CC did prefer to play on the west coast but he had no offers that were even close to the Yankee offer. That in my opinion is the difference.

  157. Jack Francis December 10th, 2008 at 11:08 pm

    dave,

    Exactly right.

CC is a 3 yr marriage. Even if he enjoyed it here, I’d imagine that if he does well here, he will have so many more suitors in 2011 especially the WC teams when the economy is better. It’s hard to predict how the economics will be in baseball in 3 years, but I’d imagine the offers for CC will be far superior so he would be more open to taking a discount. This assumes he is even considering staying with us, which is no lock.

That’s why the guy above who said that our window is the next 3 years is exactly correct. We have 3 years to win this thing, he isin’t going to be here long term.

Point is he really doesn’t want to be here WTF do you want to do drag him kicking and screaming while giving up multiple young players ? He doesn’t want to be here.

I’m one of the “silent legions” who hopes the only time Manny never becomes a Yankee. I seriously don’t understand how people can disregard the unprofessional way he forced the Red Sox’s hand. And I don’t understand why people somehow think he would enjoy playing for the Yankees.

  161. CB December 10th, 2008 at 11:11 pm

    Fredo,

This is clearly Cashman’s decision – but the sense I get is that this is likely an organization decision on AJ.

I think the whole organization has decided that AJ is going to pull a Curt Schilling type transformation and turn into a legit #1 guy.

Now that may be way off. But that’s my sense. I think this is probably an organization wide assessment.

It is ultimately cashman’s decision and he’ll have to be accountable for a move that could be an utter disaster.

  162. dave December 10th, 2008 at 11:11 pm

YankeeJosh,,,,,Johan is not the same pitcher he was two years ago….Had he’d been on the open market this winter, he would not have commanded the same contract as CC…His season in Shea was impressive, but his stuff is on the slide….I still say and history will have to play this out, but Cashman and the FO clearly hit a homerun by not making that deal, and then came back and inked CC…As Nick in SF has been pointing out, CC has won the Warren Spann award the past 2 years…..That’s very impressive….

So we are choosing 2 out of

    Sheets

The best combination is one of the high risk/high reward guys (Sheets or AJ) along with one of the workhorses for insurance (Lowe or Pettitte).

“The coaches used to say then that the home visit was the key to landing the recruit.”

Pete, please stop the insanity. Derek Jeter, Lebron James, Coach Cashman and now Michelle Damon?!?!?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m as happy as anyone that we got the big fish. And if the king’s ranson we’re paying him means that George’s great grandkids have to make do with 3 Lamborghinis each instead of 4, well that’s a sacrifice I’m prepared to make.

But let’s call it as anyone with two eyes can plainly see it. He’s here because of the extra $60M, and no other reason. Not Cashman’s fireside manner, not Derek Jeter’s winning smile, and certainly not Michelle Damon’s tuna casserole recipe.

And anyone who thinks that Cashman should be puffing his chest out over this deal is off their rocker. We’re giving this guy $60M more than anyone else was offering. SIXTY MILLION DOLLARS. Other than when Maddux stood us up in the early 90′s to take less from the Braves, when has a player left as much as even $10M on the table?

Besides Tom Hicks in the Arod fiasco, Cashman got played on this negotiation as bad as any GM in the history of the sport.

We’ll just re-sign CC for 8 years/$200 million when he opts out in 2011.

Not a big deal. We nearly doubled the Brewers offer this year and we can sure as hell double the Giants offer in 2011.

  176. raymagnetic December 10th, 2008 at 11:17 pm

“He offered 7 years/160 million with an out. The next highest offer was 5/100. Give it a rest.”

Were you there when Greg Genske was receiving offers from other teams? I keep asking this questions and I haven’t found one person on this blog who work for Genske and therefore knows what other deals were on the table.

As I said earlier today, Johan got a deal a year ago for 6 years 137.5 million. There is no way CC was going to sign a contract with the Yankees for less than Johan got.

What is so hard to understand about this? The market for CC as far as CC was concerned was what Johan got from the Mets. That was the starting point for CC. CC’s agent already knew the Yankees would have been willing to pay Santana similar money so he could request the same contract for his client.

  177. YankeeJosh December 10th, 2008 at 11:17 pm

    CB,

I agree, the Yankees probably will wind up in a better position for havng gone after CC and not Santana. But I don’t think it’s a given yet, especially if CC only stays for 3 years. Santana wanted to come to NY badly. I didn’t include Melky since he really provided no value last year, but you make a fair point. The question is what happens if CC leaves after 3 years? Does 3 years of CC plus Hughes and the other minor league talent trump Johan for 6 years assuming he maintains his ace status through then? Replacing CC if he leaves will be nearly impossible.

I really hope you are right about CC out-pitching Santana. I just know based on feelings, not numbers, that personally I feel more comfortable with Santana. He’s so consistent and rarely throws bad games. So, I’m naturally fighting my own instincts in taking Sabathia over Johan.

I still believe in Hughes and didn’t want to trade him for Santana last year and hope this will work out for the Yankees.

  182. dave December 10th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

    cb,

The whole organization has been wrong before and the whole organization is wrong with this one. AJ is 32 – he isnt going to morph into an ace pitcher or a quality innings eater. He will be consistently injured and put up mediocre numbers like he did his last year in toronto in which everyone seems to think he had a great season because he pitched over 200 innings finally and probably had a celebration it happens so rarely. Fact of the matter is the deal wont work out – it wont be a pavano move but it wont be a smart one.

Sheets may work out, it may now but we will never be giving sheets five years and i think they are of equal risk with sheets being the better pitcher. Not to mention, Sheets is 30 and AJ is 32. i KNOW that isnt much of a difference but if sheets signs a 2-3 year deal, he will be 33. AJ signs a 5 year deal – he will be almost 37. THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE. If the choice is between sheets for 3 and AJ for 5, i still take sheets for 3. AJ and sheets would be nice but i would make the smart move and re-sign pettitte. I wont complain if they sign Sheets and AJ but i will complain if they sign sheets and lowe – that would be making two ridiculously risky moves after cash has had one of the best off seasons he has had in his career.

  183. Patrick December 10th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

It’s crazy but I want Burnett on the Yankees. My brain is telling me that 5 years is a terrible idea but the baseball fan in me REALLY wants Burnett. His stuff is just electric, how can he NOT be an ace? I’m drooling thinking about a rotation of Sabathia, Wang, Burnett, Chamberlain and my grandma. Because honestly, my grandma could be the 5th starter on the Yankees with those 4 guys ahead of her.

Then again… imagine if Cashman had signed Pavano for 80 million rather than 39 million. That’s what this deal could become. A scary thought but if push comes to shove, I hope the Yankees take the chance.

Does anyone else find it both surprising and slightly upsetting that the Yankees current pitching focus apparently revolves around Burnett and Sheets/Lowe instead of Pettitte?

I’m excited about the possible new addition of Burnett and I am sure that Sheets would a fine addition too, but Pettitte on a one year contract for $13 million seems ideal with respect to your 4th starter and the time frame in which I would expect Phil Hughes to be ready to join the rotation.

  186. ANSKY December 10th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

    Doreen –

Most of the Sox fans among my friends who were saying “Well, that’s just Manny being Manny” back in ’04-05 stopped saying that when his act was getting seriously old in ’07. By then they said they’d cringe when he posed & watched a HR or a near-miss of a HR. I enjoyed just knowing they cringed.

If he actually came here, many of the people who say they want him here would start to cringe sooner than they realize. Maybe not all of them (some are incorrigible) but a lot of them.

We absafrackinlootely do not need that bozo to win especially if we have the pitching. Someone else would suffice if we need offense. After parts of last year, that list would include anyone with a pulse.

  187. Rob NY -- 2009 The Road to Redemption December 10th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

“I dunno Ray. I think Arte Moreno is going to make a pretty high offer.”

It has been said that Boras would prefer that Tex goes to Boston, and I think there might be some truth to that.

If Tex did go to Boston it would provide another possible bidder for Manny (Angels, Dodgers, and possibly the Yankees) especially since Boston obviously won’t be trying to sign Manny.

If Tex goes back to the Angels it makes it unlikely that they would go for Manny.

  190. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes December 10th, 2008 at 11:21 pm

and for the record, I am not insinuating that I side with Pettitte…his tactics with Boston and LA are absurd and completely out of line if he does in fact plan to pitch for the Yankees or retire.

I just feel his duration of contract at one year is ideal. Sheets isn’t going to sign for 2 years. It’ll be three at least.

Johan deal 6 year 137 million plus prospects.

CC’s deal 7 years 161 no prospects. How on earth did Cashman have a bad day?

    Patrick,

How can burnett not be an ace? Are you serious? hE IS 32 and never in his life has been in ace? The real question is how can the yankees think signing a pitcher who is 32 to a five year deal is a smart move? How can they think this wont blow up in their face when he has made 10 trips to the dl in 9 years and those were in his prime? That is what i would be asking. It is clear burnett will not come here and be an ace or a workhorse.

I was trying to explain that as a baseball fan, my gut as trisha would say, wants Burnett to be a Yankees. However his stats don’t match up with that feeling so its hard to resolve whether or not he’d be a good signing.

Good question Mad Prince. I’m not sure because my sense of things is that the Yankees are really focusing on filling out their starting rotation.

I think the Yankees would be happy to add another big bat but don’t see it as crucial. Most people are expecting Cano to have a more characteristic year for him next year, Posada will be healthy and productive, and Arod seems to have his “monster” years every odd year.

He may be a great ‘team leader’ and all that but paying a guy that much to hit like a replacement level player has got to be hard to stomach. “Brandon- are you really a Knicks fan? Duhon is hardly ever talked about and he gets nearly 9 assists a game with a weak supporting cast. Harris is good but VC hogs the ball too much to properly compliment Devins play-making ability.”

I’ve watched Duhon on the Bulls before being a Knick he has his spurts what’s good about him is he protects the ball but people that follow the Knicks think he’s the 2nd coming of Steve Nash are completely off. VC has underperformed so much and is there any surprise how a Lawrence Frank Nets couldn’t defend the 3 ball.

    Mad Prince,

Couldn’t agree more on Pettitte. We know the guy can handle NY, he pitches through pain, and we only have to commit to him for one year. What could be more simple?

    Raymagnetic,

If you bid 60% more than the second bidder in an auction (and throw in an opt-out clause in the bargaign) you got your pants pulled down. There’s no other way around it.

If you want to believe that there were all these mystery bids that no one knows about, suit yourself. But if the widely reported Brewer bid was the second best, don’t you think that Cash could have got him for tens of millions of dollars less than $161M?

Interesting that the $91 million rumor has already disappeared from Rosenthal’s blog. It appears to be completely false.

Now in its place he says,

“The Yankees will not sign both A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe, according to a major-league source. They can sign one of the aformentioned pitchers, and Andy Pettitte or another free-agent pitcher. They’ve also spoken to Ben Sheets.”

Then he rambles on a bit and includes this tidbit,

“The Yankees are “progressing” in their discussions with Lowe, according to a major-league source. Another source, however, says reports that the team is close with Lowe are overblown.”

Sounds to me like Jon Heyman is a sellout that works for Scott Boras. I knew those rumors about Lowe and Manny were a bunch of BS.

  228. dave December 10th, 2008 at 11:36 pm

    Pepitone,

CC is 28 and only pitched ridiculously workloads the last 2 years. He will be fine for at least the ages of 28 to 31 and then, probably opt out and we will decide again if he is worth the money or he will decide for us.

We will regret giving AJ 5 years and over18 million per season. Who exactly does cashman think aj is? Is he looking at the same stats I am? A career 1.28 whip and a career 3.81 era and those include his al east numbers. in toronto, he has had about a 4 era and a 1.3 whip. He has made 30 starts twice in 9 years. And he walks about 80 every 200 innings. Is that worth an 18 million dollar 5 year contract? Andy got 16 million last two years but he has guaranteed to pitch 200 innings with around an era of Burnett’s average or better and we gave him more because he was part of the organization. Burnett has no ties here and is certainly not guaranteed to eat up innings – Yes, he is great against the AL east but that is not the reason to give someone this much. The yankees are out of their minds – we should just spend that extra money on tex.

They areally need to be a win now team as they are giving away any farm system that they had and they had very little.

Is that the same Sean Green who was with the Mets a few years ago. I thought he retured for some reason and if not he wasnt very good when he was wih the Mets what would make him good this time around?

  252. ariel December 10th, 2008 at 11:46 pm

When all is said and done, Manny will probably go for a 3 year deal. Nothing else will be on the table. The Dodgers are gone…McCourt is breathing a sigh of relief, perhaps Moreno in a fit of frustration might take a shot, but that’s unlikely. Boras will do his typical smoke and mirrors routine, but 3 should do it, at most.

For a third of a season, Manny at the age of 36 performed like no other in recent memory. He was dedicated and focussed…no “Manny being Manny” as he had a goal. Even if he gets the deal he wants, he still should be focussed for the three years or so given his goals as adequately set forth in Graziano’s column.

P.S Any 5 year offer to Burnett is dumb”

In a vacuum it may appear that he outbid himself but as I’ve said numerous times today the starting point for any Sabathia deal was always what Johan got from the Mets.

Sabathia knew the Yankees would have been willing to give Johan a contract similar to what the Mets gave him and that’s what he was always going to ask for.

The bottom line is that Cashman got a pitcher who’s been better than Johan Santana the past 2 years for a similar amount of money. Those are the facts of the deal.

I have no idea if there was or wasn’t another team bidding for CC. All I know is that the Yankees have another top of the rotation starter and they got to keep everyone who would have been traded if they had went the Johan route last year.

In my opinion it’s GREAT day for the Yankees and for Cashman as well.

  262. Boston Dave December 10th, 2008 at 11:54 pm

Still if Atl is willing to go 5, their must be a strong belief that AJ is healthy enough to make a big impact.

Atl certainly doesn’t seem to have an impulsive/extravagant track record no?

  270. Back Bench December 10th, 2008 at 11:57 pm

For what it is worth, Cito Gaston (sp?) was on MLB on Xm this pm with Keb=vin Kennedy and said:

    1. AJ was a very reliable competitor and team mate this year. He ‘took the ball’ on 3 days rest. The issue of his health going forward is settled as far as Gaston is concerned.

    2. He considered this year that he had two “aces” in AJ and Doc.

Kennedy then added that Atlanta sees AJ as a must get and that they know how to evaluate pitching. They see AJ as their #1 and need him to stay competitive in the NLE.

  271. Brendan December 10th, 2008 at 11:58 pm

I already hate this guy. What a fraud. He better not show up at a press conference and claim how “proud and excited” he is to be a Yankee. If Sabathia had no other offers coming close to six years and $140 million, WHY did they have to increase their offer to seven years and $160 million?? Pure extortion. They bid against themselves for Giambi, and now they made the same mistake with Fatso. What a desperate ballclub this is, led by an incompetent GM who has to BRIBE players to play for NY. There seems to be a price for the Yanks and a price for everyone else, and I’m sick of the double standard. Give me someone who WANTS to be here, not some fat mercenary who insists on an “out” clause in

Not sure how you can complain about signing a lefty in his prime that’s already won a cy young and could’ve won back to back if he was in the NL the entire year (I’d say AL the entire year but his teammate Cliff Lee still would’ve beaten him out).

The thing I love the most is it only cost money – yes, a LOTTTTTTT of money, but we still have Hughes, Kennedy, Melky, and the list of 10+ minor leaguers that always comes up.

That’s the one of the reasons I don’t want the Yankees to get Peavy (If he was willing to be here). First reason is look at his home/road era splits. 1.75 at Yellowstone (I mean PetCo), and 4.28 on the road (yeah, put that in the AL East)…. the other being it would take a huge contract AND the players mentioned above.

  280. Yankee Trader December 11th, 2008 at 12:06 am

Sabathia won’t be abused with our bullpen, the way the Brewers abused him.

If Sheets is healthy would rather a 2 year contract with him, even if it means a club option for a 3rd + another lefty in one year for Pettitte, letting Burnett go to the Braves and out of our division.
