Final day of Winter Meetings gets started

The Rule 5 draft is about to get started. The Yankees are at 40 on the 40-man, so they won’t be taking anybody.
Nothing new on the A.J. Burnett front. The Yankees are being very aggressive with the right-hander. While a deal could come down today, it’s interesting to note that Brian Cashman either is about to leave or has already left the Bellagio to go back to New York.
As for reports that the Yankees are still talking to Scott Boras about Mark Teixeira … well of course they are. It’s more Spy vs. Spy stuff with the Red Sox and Angels. Pretending to have an interest drives up the price.

I like getting Cameron for a year. If I read right, he only hit into 4 dp’s all season while hitting 25 HR’s and playing excellent defense. It’s a no brainer. Interesting thing is, the entire OF will be free agents after 09. Damon, Matsui, Nady and Cameron. Only one’s signed would be Gardner and Swisher if you shift him. That being said, I wonder if there is room for Texiera after all?
Cameron also strikes out once a game. Let’s see … it’s only for one year and there’s always the trade deadline.
The draft begins, and Yanks won’t pick.
what the hell is ansky?
Reegie Corona was picked by Seattle
Don Veal was picked by Pittsburgh
Pete, im not at all saying that the yankees will sign Texiera; But i am saying its foolish to put a NO WAY on the subject. You can never count the Yankees out. You can say and i will agree it is unlikely they will sign him but i woln’t say imposible. My question for you is, what are you going to say to all of the blog readers if he doe sign with us? Is going to be an im surprised or an im sorry for telling you it would never happen? Just curious.
Anyone else find it interesting that the Angels have not yet made an offer for TEX. With it being said that he is their number one priority one would think they would have at least made an offer unless they said to Boros once you have all your offers in then come to us and we will make ours??Not quite sure what the Angels are doing at this point as they seem to be showing no aggressiveness on this.
migames,
I asked that, too. If ansky doesn’t answer try do an “ansky commercial” search at youtube. Hilarous.
GB7,
Really? Guess that means Cairo’s on the outs. Odds he’ll end up in LA? lol. Love the Cairo.
Phil,
Why do you keep posting that without followup?
What is the big problem with having Cameron for a year? The offense is not made or broken by what Mike Cameron does at the plate in 2009. He’s a compliment to the people who are expected to do the majority of the run-producing, and as such he is clearly above average and it seems like the Yankees won’t be paying all of his contract either.
Melky Cabrera’s ceiling was a 4th OF and the Yankees have another guy who can do that job, and might actually do it better in Gardner. It’s also hilarious to hear people now saying that Cameron is no better than Gardner, when Brett Gardner has proven exactly jack diddly at the big league level save for the fact that he’s fast and he has no power. If the team had gone into 2009 with Gardner and Melky in center, there would have been numerous conniption fits had on this board about how Cashman has ignored CF and it will be an offensive black hole and all that jazz. There was nobody better to sign in FA, and the other trade alternatives seem to have been Andruw Jones, Juan Pierre or Eric Byrnes. At least Cameron will give you 20 HR power, steal a few bases and play good defense–plus, Gardner still gets playing time subbing for Cameron and Damon while being the go-to pinch runner. Stop all the crying.
Florida picked Zack Kroenke, LHP from Yanks
Mike Cameron is a good soldier and always takes the old Earl Weaver adage to heart – “If you think you’re going to hit into a double play, do the right thing and strike out.”
Twins pick Jason Jones from Yanks
So, which OF’s do we have entering their walk year?
Damon? Matsui? Cameron if we get him? Is Nady a year from arb or FA? Other than Cameron (who we’re not yet into officially) I don’t exactly remember ends of their contracts.
A year from now, maybe we’ll see the OF being revamped in a way similar to the current approach to pitching. Damon, Matsui & Cameron would free up over $30 mil.
There’s A-Jax coming up. We’ll see how he progresses this year. What good OF’s are going to be FA’s in a year?
Actually, the morning reports say Tex is closer to signing with Boston than the Yankees.
For those upset Pete says there is, “no way” the Yankees will sign Tex, instead of ripping Pete and demanding “retractions” if they do sign him, will you say, “he’s right” if they don’t?
It works both ways.
I don’t know why folks get too upset when the originator of this blog states his opinion. Its HIS blog.
If you disagree with him, state why in a logical fashion.
Why can’t he have his opinions like the rest of us?
AJ (17) + CC (23)= 40m 88m came off books. That leaves 48m (plus 26-30m next year) to sign Tex. If they don’t do so, Cash is insane or handcuffed by Hal.
“Florida picked Zack Kroenke, LHP from Yanks”
I thought Kroenke might go. Lefty pitchers get taken in the rule 5 more than just about any other position.
that was a line in the commercial
the cabbie asked the guys: what the hell is ansky?
San Diego picked Ivan Nova (RHP) from Yanks
Migames – I see you remember … how nostalgic!
Gabe Paul – That Weaverism is funny. Apparently it’s true when it comes to Cameron.
Mets just got Cherry.

Yanks excess pitching took a hit, but not expected. The only one that hurt was Kroenke.

How is Cashman being “handcuffed” by Hal? Do you not see how much money they are spending.
Spare me the “Sons don’t care about winning as much as the father” nonsense.
The Yankees are spending money like they are printing it this off-season.
If they don’t sign Tex, its not because they are cheap, its because they are prioritizing the needs of the team differently than some of the fans.
ok. Predicting it right now:
If NYY does not sign Manny (and i don’t expect them to) the Yankees and Oakland will complete a trade for Matt Holliday in July. Why? The offense will be lagging and Holldiay will be viewed as the ‘championship piece’
also, Billy Beane will be coveting the pitching prospects NYY have compiled, yet suddenly have no place to put them.
type it in stone.
“AJ (17) + CC (23)= 40m 88m came off books. That leaves 48m (plus 26-30m next year) to sign Tex.”
Not true. Both ARod and Cano are getting raises. On top of that you are not counting the money that Swisher and Marte are making. Those expenses total to around $20M.
And they still need to fill in 2 spots in the rotation, the bench and upgrade CF (which seems imminent).
They don’t have 48M left to spend this year and they were hoping to decrease the payroll as it is.
Phase II now starting.
***but not unexpected***
Migames, Mel –
One of the funnier ANSKY commercials was the one after the little dog bit David Cone’s finger, but I’ve never been able to find it on YouTube. The guys follow Cone around, protecting his pitching arm & hand whenever he tries to use it for anything. At one point there’s a flushing sound, Cone walks out of a men’s room stall and the ‘N’ guy humbly walks out after him. LMAO big time.
“Yanks excess pitching took a hit, but not expected. The only one that hurt was Kroenke.”
Agreed GB7. 3 players got picked but on the whole they did well.
The organization guessed right in not protecting Horne, Whelan or Cox. Now it’s an enormous advantage to not have those guys on the 40 man roster. They won’t be forced to dfa one of them if they need room on the 40 man.
That’ll be particularly helpful to horne and cox as they recover from injury.
I can’t see Nova sticking in the bigs with the padres.
Kroenke could stick with Marlins as a Loogy. Jones – who knows. I can’t see him beating out the twins pitching but perhaps as a long man?
It’s very interesting that 3 organizations focused on player development (the new Mariner’s gm is very good with prospect talent) were the ones to take yankee guys.
Minor League Draft Phase II
Pittsburgh picks Andres Santos (LHP) from Yanks
Phil – SJ’s never said his posts are facts. Of course they’re his opinion. More often than with most posters, it’s an insightful opinion.

So much for the Yanks not having anybody that another team would want.
