Say it ain’t so

Peter Abraham
December
11

This my perhaps my favorite MLB Trade Rumors post ever. It regards Mark Teixeira:

2:38pm: Tim Brown and Gordon Edes talked to involved execs (not with the Angels) who believes the Boras camp is “using the media to ratchet up the price beyond what any team had actually offered.”

Whoa, whoa, whoa. You mean an agent might say something to a reporter that isn’t true in an attempt to make more money? I am shocked. Next thing you know, it will turn out those girls in high heels and too much makeup smiling at everybody at the Bellagio aren’t just being friendly.

I love those girls. They can be REALLY friendly if you want them to be.

  2. Steve in Bismarck

    Peavy to Angels?? http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/s.....tings-blog

BREAKING: CASHMAN FLYING TO MEET WITH PETTITTE

  4. Boston Dave

a fitting analogy between Boras (is he wearing a purple hat today?) and the girls in the high heels.

  5. islesfan

Now the Yankees need to go get Texeira. They still have lots of room in the budget for him.

  6. mel

Yes, that’s a good one, Pete. This one’s not far behind, though.

    Andruw Jones Draws Inquiries
By Tim Dierkes [December 9, 2008 at 10:23pm CST]
Diamond Leung talked to Ned Colletti, who said a few teams asked about Andruw Jones. However, those teams would ask the Dodgers to pick up the “vast majority” of the $22.1MM owed to Jones. Hmmm…would 150% of it be sufficient?

  7. aron-baka

oh man can i use now one of them

  8. S.A.- CC you soon Mr. Sabathia

Joba on with Kay at 5pm-ish on 1050 ESPN radio

  9. gayle

Looks like brandon is getting his wish for Cash to go to Texas albeit not the person I think he wanted him to see

  10. Brandon (SHOW SHEETS THE MONEEEEEEEEY !, CC's a Yank !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

    Heyman + Boras = $$$$

  11. teddy

mark texeria makes the yankees much better in so many ways. put swisher in rf, those 82 walks in bottom of the order is great

  12. Steve in Bismarck

Take it or leave it Andy. Hope he says “yes,” but time to decide either way.

  13. We need the big guy!!

    Cash meets with Pettitte

  14. harwood

Pete you still feel confident about the Tex wont be a Red Sox or Yankee prediction?

  15. yankeefan91 Sign burnett or sheets and manny asap

i though cashman was metting with burnett

  16. Al from BK

Cash couldn’t just get Andy signed on his Blackberry? 1 year 12 mil take it or leave it.

  17. Evan

    I didn’t know the Bellagio was Hooker-central?

Now I know where to schedule our next conference.

  18. Brandon (SHOW SHEETS THE MONEEEEEEEEY !, CC's a Yank !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

“Looks like brandon is getting his wish for Cash to go to Texas albeit not the person I think he wanted him to see”

Sheets lives in Texas too, he better make sure he sees him before he leaves. Look I love Andy but you can not let Sheets wind up on another contender, when healthy inning per inning he is one of the best SP in the game. Beckett like.

  19. JR Yankees

So Cash is gonna make one last pitch to Pettitte today…I’m assuming a take it or leave it option.

I cannot see the Yankees offering him more then 12M though. I hope that is enough to lock him in, otherwise it looks like we turn to Sheets.

  20. Evan

    teddy = Boras sock puppet.

  21. aron-baka

One team executive said recently that “in the real world, Andy is probably now an $8 million-a-year pitcher at most. We are willing to pay $2 million more because we love him, because he is a Yankee and we want it to stay that way.”

  22. Nick in SF

Are we learning more about that hour that Pete claims he couldn’t post?

  23. Brandon (SHOW SHEETS THE MONEEEEEEEEY !, CC's a Yank !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

My god I’d literally want to punch Francesa in his jaw STHU ! about Joba in the BP shut up for once !

  24. vinny-b (bring back Petitte and sign Sheets at 2 yrs)

Petitte is my fave player on the Yankees.

    thank you, Cashman.

  25. Brandon (SHOW SHEETS THE MONEEEEEEEEY !, CC's a Yank !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Andy 10 million is too much for you I doubt any team in MLB would give him that in these times, take it or leave it !

  26. myrtlebeachfan

“Sheets lives in Texas too, he better make sure he sees him before he leaves. Look I love Andy but you can not let Sheets wind up on another contender, when healthy inning per inning he is one of the best SP in the game. Beckett like.”

If he is Beckett-like, I don’t want him. Beckett has had one decent season and the rest show his true talent and form. He’s not that good. Not an ace in my book.

  27. Brandon (SHOW SHEETS THE MONEEEEEEEEY !, CC's a Yank !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

“If he is Beckett-like, I don’t want him. Beckett has had one decent season and the rest show his true talent and form. He’s not that good. Not an ace in my book.”

He’s the good Beckett not the bad.

  28. John

Pete, this is a very unprofessional post. mlbtraderumors are just reporting on what 2 other reporters wrote. I like thier site very much, they have been on top of everything, working all hours, and not sleeping through all the major news! It is also quite refreshing to read a blog with all baseball news, not a play-by-play description of the food they eat in every post…

  29. Luiso

What’s Francesa’s argument for Joba in the ‘pen. I mean, is it just an idiot being an idiot?

  30. We need the big guy!!

Cash will probably offer him $12m and he will take it. The Yanks should stay at $10m but $2m is nothing to them and I would be surprised if that is not enough for him. Pettitte is more attractive then Lowe because they only have to give him 1 year instead of 4 to Lowe. Cash needs to say $12m move it or lose it. Feelings can not be involved here, or the past..Pettitte is not worth more then that.

  31. Tom

Brandon, if you value your sanity, turn off the radio. Besides, the hollidays are upon us, turn the fat guy off and enjoy life and be happy.

I stopped listening to that fool years ago and I am better for it-my acid reflux cleared right up.

  32. harwood

“What’s Francesa’s argument for Joba in the ‘pen. I mean, is it just an idiot being an idiot?”

    Joba ‘reminds him’ of Gossage.

  33. stuart

will see how much ANdy loves being a Yankee. Can he bring himself to play for a measly $10 mill a yr.? Poor guy that is almost insulting.

I say if Pettitte signs, srew Burnett sign SHeets for 2 yrs…

    SP

CC, wang, joba, pettitte, and sheets with Hughes in reserve….

  34. gayle

John you need to read the post a little more carefully what Pete was making fun of was the execs who told the reporters that not MLB Trade Rumors site for printing it. Pete has said that that site is one of his favs.

  35. Patrick

“The Yanks should stay at $10m but $2m is nothing to them and I would be surprised if that is not enough for him.”

Not so fast.. I seem to remember the Yankees going to arbitration over $600,000. Even if $2 mill is a small fraction of their payroll, that doesn’t mean the Yankees will cave in and give it to Andy.

  36. aron-baka

10 mill a yr.? Poor guy that is almost insulting
    just like joe torre was

  37. Patrick

Not a bad idea stuart. Sheets is a risky signing but can be had for less than Burnett. Balance that risk with Pettitte who is a relatively safe bet to throw 200 innings in 2009.

  38. mel

I think that Andy would rather have the extra $2M than the “love” shown by flying in to see him.

  39. We need the big guy!!

Yanks shouldn’t cave in and give him the extra money because no other team will. The only other mentioned teams for him have been the Cardinals and the Dodgers and they would both probably offer him $8m.

  40. Laura - Welcome, CC!

I said it before and I’ll say it again. Offer Andy 12 or 13mil and let the chips fall where they may. He can’t get the 16mil anywhere else and Andy knows that. 12-13mil is nothing to turn your nose up at. I wish that someone would pay me 12-13mil to do my job.

  41. Tom

there’s most likely a lay over in Texas.

  42. Boston Dave

“Are we learning more about that hour that Pete claims he couldn’t post?”

seems like you are on to something…

  43. GreenBeret7

I thought Eric Hinski had signed with a team in Japan. Would the Yanks have interest in a versatile corner infielder/corner outfielder for the bench?

  44. Gabagoo(CC IS MY BOY)

“Everyone is jelous of the yankees” -Krucker

  45. Luiso

At most, 13m for Pettite, IMO. Take it or leave it. He’d practically be the 4th, maybe even 5th starter, so that seems fair. I don’t think he can get more than that anywhere else.

  46. pat

Gordon Eades talked to team executives who weren’t the Angels and they were whining about Boras. Wonder who that could be?

Next thing you know they’ll be calling Boras the Evil Emperor.

    ————————————————————

If Sheets goes done for surgery early, you end up paying 30 mil for nothing. More than one team has seen his medical reports and some have said an absolute NO, and some say they were ok.

  48. GreenBeret7

    ***goes down for surgery***

  49. TGFizeek

Is it too much to ask for Petitte for 12 mil plus incentives to make up the 4 mil? Why is it every MLB contract is guarenteed money? Seems lazy.

  50. TGFizeek

    guaranteed

    ROAD……..ROW-AD….ROOAAAD

  51. Rob Thompson

Edes is a hack. Nice job of calling him out, Pete. Can’t stand that dude.

  52. OldYanksFan

Andy has a career ERA+ of 117 (same as Wang)
Over the lasr 3 years, his average ERA+ has been 105.
He has pitched over 200 IP in 4 of the last 5 years.
This makes him a solid #3.
Can we get a #3 FA pitcher for $10m?
One who has a 1 year contract?
    I think not.
My guess is Andy is worth $12m-$13m on the open market.

I would think/hope Andy would accept that.
