Winter Meetings wrapping up

Now that the Rule 5 draft is finished, so are the Winter Meetings in essence. Most of the GMs and agents have cleared out of the Bellagio.

In previous years, some deals have come down in the 24-48 hours after the Meetings as discussions that started in person get completed over the phone. Obviously the Yankees will complete the CC Sabathia signing as well.

Meanwhile, so much for Nick Punto helping out off the bench. He has agreed to a two-year deal to remain with the Minnesota Twins.

Kepner says the Brewers have actually been asking about Igawa.

    YAY!! Give him to em!!

Punto doesn’t want to disappoint his fan club.

  6. Rivera21 December 11th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

I think Punto wouldn’t have gotten enough at bats or playing time.

No Punto?!?!?!!? CASH WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!! Now the 2009 season is ruined!!!!

Someone had to say it first.

    Too bad about Punto.

    Punto’s a good baseball name.

Depends. Did they want us to pay his salary and keep his shades?

At over $4M per yr Punto would have been an expensive reserve. If we are looking to cut payroll and still add two from Burnett/ Sheets/ Pettitte to the rotation we cant spend that sort of cash on the bench (although if Cash does want to spend some money why not trade for Crosby if Oakland sign Furcal?)

We should be putting the money into the rotation and go after Sheets on a two or three yr deal. I hope we don’t spend the money on Cameron instead, I want to see Gardner in CF.

ugh. i turn away from the blog for a half day, and all this Rule 5 draft stuff happens. will any of the guys lost stick in the majors?

and i didn’t even hear anything about the Rule 1 thru 4 drafts…

  12. sunny615 December 11th, 2008 at 2:23 pm

they said it would basically be a swap – igawa for hall.

Not worried about Yank players going in Rule 5. If brass did their homework, then they protected their most important 40 players. Remember, they were able to add minor leaguers to the 40 man due to the room created by letting go Giambi, Pettitte, Mussina, Abreau, etc. CC is not yet signed and on the 40 man. So, that means prospects were protected. And if any of those selected don’t remain on the their new teams rosters for the entire next season, then they are offered back.

  14. Laura - Welcome, CC! December 11th, 2008 at 2:25 pm

Good. I didn’t want Punto. The Yankees need to start giving guys like Cody Ransom a chance.

  15. Pel December 11th, 2008 at 2:25 pm

    Punto: The “n” is silent.

  16. Mike V December 11th, 2008 at 2:25 pm

    Correction to earlier post:

CC is not yet signed and thus not on the 40 man and doesn’t yet need protecting.

  19. S.o.S. December 11th, 2008 at 2:30 pm

    “Punto’s a good baseball name.”

    “Punto: The “n” is silent.”
