The only error in your argument is...

Johan is better than C.C.!

Not only that, but the Yankees give up first round draft picks for C.C. because he is a Type A. What are prospects before they are prospects? DRAFT PICKS!

So therefore, the Mets gave up crappy prospects for Johan, and didn't have to give up draft picks, and paid him LESS MONEY (40 million less guarenteed) for a BETTER pitcher.

What seems to be forgotten is that there was tremendous competition for Johan and the Yankees were bidding against themselves in that Range. The only reason the Yankees didn't get Santana was NOT the money but the issue of giving up Phil Hughes and more top pitching prospects. Plus Santana is considered a "gamer" which has since been reaffirmed as his performance of a Met. No one considers CC with the same pedigree. As a NY transplant in California, it will be interesting his time in NYC especially since he only choose the Yankees for the money since he waited so long to sign just to get the Giants, A's, Dodgers or Angels interested to match or get near the Yankees offer. But of course in terms of the whole package, CC was a better deal but it's all relative to the situation, time and competition.

Umm go back and check those numbers. Santana will receive 151.5 if his option vests. Sabathia will get 161. Santana was babied by the Twins and started his career as a reliever, while Sabathia was abused like a 78 pinto.

And lest ye forget, Sabathia will cost the Yankees their first two draft picks, so he did cost them some prospects...

Sabathia and Burnett can both pitch complete games, as can Santana. The difference is, with NYYs bullpen, there is now no reason to, unless there are special circumstances (no hitters). This bullpen is the best they'd had sin 1996-1999. There may not be another this close.

Well, Santana had a choice and he chose to forego free agency. How was he to know that we'd have such a great bullpen in '08?
