Hal Steinbrenner is the 28th most influential person in sports according to Sports Business Journal.
The only baseball people ahead of him are Bud Selig (No. 6), MLB chief operating officer Bob DuPuy (No. 18), Red Sox owner John Henry (No. 20) and MLB executive VP for business Tim Brosnan (No. 22).
(Two of Selig’s lieutenants rank ahead of the owner of the Yankees? The office Christmas party get started early at Sports Business Journal?)
Hank Steinbrenner was ranked 1,456th. He was just behind the visiting clubbie in Scranton but ahead of Carl Pavano.

I’m surprised Scott Boras wasn’t ranked higher than 27. I’d think he’d be in the top 20 at least.
Any reason to think the Yankees told Andy to hold off on signing for a bit so they can realistically drive up the price on Lowe for Boston. It wouldn’t be believable that the Yankees are in it if they already have 5 reliable starters.
For what it’s worth, Hal’s 28th, not 27th, Peter.

It’s posts like this that make me realize how clueless spotswriters really are.
I’m surprised Boras is #42. I thought he would be higher
LOL..I thought Hank wouldn’t crack the top 1500.
“I’m surprised Scott Boras wasn’t ranked higher than 27. I’d think he’d be in the top 20 at least.”
He doesn’t seem to have a lot of high profile non-baseball players as clients. With football far and away the #1 sport these days, Boras doesn’t have the sports-wide cache so much as he has it baseball-wide.

i think everybody is looking past the fact that joba has to be the #5 b/c of his innings limits, so whoever takes the next starting spot is going to be a #4 and the yankees are going to need him every 5th day, not the bottom-of-the-pile guy you pass-over every time there’s an off-day or rainout. this is a significant difference.
——————————————
This is true, but I think Aceves/Hughes is better than any other stopgap we get.
After spending $240M on 2 pitchers, I can’t see them going for Lowe as their #4/#5 at Boras’ terms. Sheets would remain an option, but they’ve seen something they don’t like or they’re playing it stealth. Garland would be another commitment.
Even with a farmhand in the #4 slot, we have a great chance to win 4 out of 5 games.
“Any reason to think the Yankees told Andy to hold off on signing for a bit so they can realistically drive up the price on Lowe for Boston.”
Don’t think so Russell. First of all, Boston doesn’t seem all that interested in Lowe and secondly, what interest they may have seems to be in the three years, $10M-$12M range from all reports and Lowe will likely get more years and money elsewhere.
mel – I think this is the calculation that Cash and Hal have made, and why we’re not hearing a lot of noise about Lowe, Garland, Sheets, etc. at this point (though lack of noise doesn’t rule out anything). At some point, everyone has to say enough to spending money, especially if they’re looking at adding a Mike Cameron and his salary.
Joe,
The receipts have a way of adding up, even in baseball!
Two questions for the crew:
1. How is the WBC going to affect ST?
2. Does CC start on the road, or do they finagle it so he starts in the stadium. If they start him on the road, what slot (in the rotation) is scheduled for the stadium opener?
“Does CC start on the road, or do they finagle it so he starts in the stadium. If they start him on the road, what slot (in the rotation) is scheduled for the stadium opener?”
the yankees start in balt on 4/6 and the home opener (4/16 vs. Cleveland) is 10 days later so whoever starts the first game is on track to make his 3rd start the home opener.
Ham Fighters– There is an off day in the first 10 days of the season though. The spot that starts at the new stadium is likely the #5 spot. That could be Joba or if Andy pitches day 5 somehow it could be him.
I bet if he’s healthy Wang gets to start Game 1 in Baltimore and the New Yankee Stadium opener. Then again, maybe part of CC’s negotiations was getting to pitch the first regular season game ever at New Yankee Stadium. The negotiations ended with Cashman relenting on $20 million more, and that little nugget. One person who won’t be making the home opener start this year, thankfully, is Carl Pavano.
Boston Herlad reporting the Sox made Teixeira an 8yr. offer. We’ll see if this can be confirmed by another source.

Every piece written about Texeria re-signing with the Angels always has an attachment about the Yanks lurking in the shadows…..That was Ken Forsch’s comments a few weeks ago also during a round of golf at Peeble Beach…..Maybe they’re just waiting to see how everything goes and then they make a last minute pitch to Boras…..Who really knows for certain, Cashman plays this game of being coy rather well……Pettite will come back for a year I believe….Split the difference 12-13 mil…..
——————————————————————————————
Morning,Pat. Does Bob Forsch golf with you guys? Those two brothers were outstanding pitchers.
I saw where somebody let it slip that 21 mil a year wasn’t enough to get Teixeira. They maybe looking at close to Alex Rodriguez money. I don’t know who would have put that out. It surely couldn’t have been the normally close-lipped Boras.
It’s amazing that the hype around Teixeira has gotten so out of control, even if it’s Boras’s modus operandi…I mean, he’s an excellent player and it’s not that he’s not worth a big-money long-term contract, but the concept of him being worth close to “A-Rod money” seems insane. He’s not exactly the prototypical centerpiece/cornerstone for a franchise for years to come (unless it’s the Orioles or Nats, where by default he’d be on all the billboards)–and in Boston or Anaheim (or in NY where the dreamers still want him to end up) he’s not going to be that, so how does it make sense to let his price get that high?
yes there is an off-day so technically the #5 guy should be the starter except when you define the #5 guy as the guy you pass-over whenever you have an off-day. it would be very tempting to have joba pitch the home opener, but…
to keep joba going as regularly as possible and limit his innings, you skip him the first time through, so his first outing is the day before the home opener vs. the rays, and then he goes every 5th day until after the next off day which isnt until 5/11 (only one off-day in the first month!)
cc starts the opener in baltimore, then opens New Yankee Stadium vs. his old homies.
btw, no off-day after opening day means that if opening day is rained out, ppl who have tix for game #2 will be going to the home opener!
or i guess they could go with a split DH the day after an opening day rainout to keep the new stadium opening day ticketholders happy.
“so how does it make sense to let his price get that high?”
Same way it made sense for Sabathia’s and Burnett’s to get that high.
Wow, Mark Cuban has fallen far. Its good to see that Hal has cracked the top 30, and as a newcomer no less.
As a Broncos fan, Im glad to see that Pat Bowlan is on the list at #45. For those football fans who dont really know Bowlan, he is a great owner and a real genuine guy.
I have no doubt that as co-chairman of the NFL Owners Commitee, he will make sure that all labor issues will be worked out so that there will not be any real serious worry of a NFL lock out when 2011 comes around.
The CC deal topped Santana’s, and it can be debated that there’s enough similar about both guys to warrant them getting the biggest pitching contracts ever. AJ didn’t surpass Zambrano’s deal, so I don’t see the way that his contract was a case of out-of-control expectations from he and his agent. Teixeira approaching an A-Rod contract seems like he’s making a big leap in terms of value that doesn’t make sense outside of the Boras/teams that desperately want him universe–it doesn’t make sense to me for a team to pay that kind of ransom for a 1st baseman who is not going to be confused in terms of production and abilities with someone like A-Rod. I may be biased to the idea of over-paying for front line starting pitching, though.
I agree with Andrew. Teixera is a really good player, but he’s not necessarily an offensive powerhouse. Jason Giambi at his peak 5 was a MUCH bigger offensive threat than Teixera has been over his last 5.
“How is the WBC going to affect ST?”
I think less Yankees might end up playing this time than last time. The majority of the Yankee infield might be MIA with Derek and Alex being gone and Robbie wanting to participate. It will give Girardi a few weeks to get a good look at utility infielders though.
Mo, Jorge, Hideki and Wang are not eligible because of DL stints or off season surgery. Not sure who else could make a team.
Joba? Yanks would probably discourage it.
Whether CC or AJ are participating has yet to be said but seems like some of the pitchers (Halladay and Lincecum) who have been asked to play have said they don’t want to.
The DR team is supposed to start working out together in January so that should get Alex and Robbie a jump start to spring training.
“I agree with Andrew. Teixera is a really good player, but he’s not necessarily an offensive powerhouse. Jason Giambi at his peak 5 was a MUCH bigger offensive threat than Teixera has been over his last 5″
True enough, but Giambi’s 5 seasons are quite somewhat tainted, he was a lousy 1B and was 31 when he hooked up with the Yankees. Teixeira is a GG at 1B, a high end hitter and will be 28 on Opening Day next year. With the possibile exception of Beltran, Teixeira’s combination of age and all around talent makes him the best free agent position player to be on the open market since ‘01 when Arod and Ramirez were free agents.
I agree with many of the comments above, Tex is a great player, but he isn’t as good as the hype. Only Pujols is really. If the Yankees don’t try to throw money at him when he hits the market I’ll be pi$$ed. If they don’t feel like throwing once in a generation money at Tex I’m ok with that because he isn’t that kind of player. He’s good, don’t get me wrong, but he isn’t in the same class as Arod, Pujols and (offensively) Manny.
As a fan who has to be content with watching the Yankees on tv or here at Safeco, I don’t care about the money, but the Yankees have certainly shown fans that they are willing to aggressively attempt to field a winner. What more can we ask for?
Fredo, your points about Giambi’s defense and age are well taken (although I was counting from his age 28 year, not 31, so it’s less of a factor).
As for Tex being the best FA position player to hit the open market, I’m not sure why that’s relevant in evaluating how much of an impact player he is. Even if Teixera were the ONLY free agent position player ever to hit the market, he’s still no Lou Gehrig.
this list (and probably the “sports business journal”, who?) is a joke.
Jerry Jones #2? i had no clue who the guy was until he was wandering the sidelines in the playoffs last year. or was it that one commercial he was in with romo.
David Stern #3, commish of a 2nd tier sport (sorry, but it is…), ahead of anyone in baseball? really?
and for some reason, i wanted to kick John Henry’s as s before even reading who he was
Peter,
Why are you always taking cheap shots at Hank?
Doesn’t matter, I’m rich. brb diamond toilet seat…
