Jerry Jones #2? i had no clue who the guy was until he was wandering the sidelines in the playoffs last year. or was it that one commercial he was in with romo.

David Stern #3, commish of a 2nd tier sport (sorry, but it is…), ahead of anyone in baseball? really?

Fredo, your points about Giambi’s defense and age are well taken (although I was counting from his age 28 year, not 31, so it’s less of a factor).

As for Tex being the best FA position player to hit the open market, I’m not sure why that’s relevant in evaluating how much of an impact player he is. Even if Teixera were the ONLY free agent position player ever to hit the market, he’s still no Lou Gehrig.

I agree with many of the comments above, Tex is a great player, but he isn’t as good as the hype. Only Pujols is really. If the Yankees don’t try to throw money at him when he hits the market I’ll be pi$$ed. If they don’t feel like throwing once in a generation money at Tex I’m ok with that because he isn’t that kind of player. He’s good, don’t get me wrong, but he isn’t in the same class as Arod, Pujols and (offensively) Manny.

As a fan who has to be content with watching the Yankees on tv or here at Safeco, I don’t care about the money, but the Yankees have certainly shown fans that they are willing to aggressively attempt to field a winner. What more can we ask for?

True enough, but Giambi’s 5 seasons are quite somewhat tainted, he was a lousy 1B and was 31 when he hooked up with the Yankees. Teixeira is a GG at 1B, a high end hitter and will be 28 on Opening Day next year. With the possibile exception of Beltran, Teixeira’s combination of age and all around talent makes him the best free agent position player to be on the open market since ’01 when Arod and Ramirez were free agents.

“How is the WBC going to affect ST?”

I think less Yankees might end up playing this time than last time. The majority of the Yankee infield might be MIA with Derek and Alex being gone and Robbie wanting to participate. It will give Girardi a few weeks to get a good look at utility infielders though.

Mo, Jorge, Hideki and Wang are not eligible because of DL stints or off season surgery. Not sure who else could make a team.
Joba? Yanks would probably discourage it.

Whether CC or AJ are participating has yet to be said but seems like some of the pitchers (Halladay and Lincecum) who have been asked to play have said they don’t want to.

The DR team is supposed to start working out together in January so that should get Alex and Robbie a jump start to spring training.

The CC deal topped Santana’s, and it can be debated that there’s enough similar about both guys to warrant them getting the biggest pitching contracts ever. AJ didn’t surpass Zambrano’s deal, so I don’t see the way that his contract was a case of out-of-control expectations from he and his agent. Teixeira approaching an A-Rod contract seems like he’s making a big leap in terms of value that doesn’t make sense outside of the Boras/teams that desperately want him universe–it doesn’t make sense to me for a team to pay that kind of ransom for a 1st baseman who is not going to be confused in terms of production and abilities with someone like A-Rod. I may be biased to the idea of over-paying for front line starting pitching, though.
