ONe thing is underrated with this move is how good Tex is as a fielder.

He needs to be clutch and tell a-rod whats good and show him how to do it

seriously this is nuts! steinbrenner kids stole daddy’s credit card this xmas!

  21. Clint December 23rd, 2008 at 3:56 pm

    I agree with Kay -

Time to use some of the spare parts (Kennedy, Melky, Veras, etc.) to try and get a legit setup man like Houston Street or someone.

  22. Raja December 23rd, 2008 at 3:56 pm

Great news but now, there is unbelievable pressure on the Yankees to win in 2009. Imagine the press if we came second to the Red Sox again.

If everyone stays healthy, this team should win 100+ games.

  23. Bphill December 23rd, 2008 at 3:57 pm

    sorry nick swisher.

UPDATE…..Cubs tickets now $.75 cents to offset spending binge

  32. Ralow December 23rd, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Hahaa…but lets cut Pete some slack here. No one thought we’d get Tex, especially after we got CC and AJ. That being said, he should have been more open to the idea instead of 15 posts about how we AREN’T getting Tex. It IS funny that he posts 3 times a day but now that this news has broke, he’s “on vacation”! LOL. Its all good. Pete is the best NY Beat writer so lets stop rubbing it in his face.

    This is a great offseason.

So, Tex’ colors come through. NY and he deserve each other. $ = $.
This is what’s wrong in sports. Baseball would have been better with him in DC. But only one thing matters, money and me.

Oh, yes – I am a sox fan and this posting would have been made had it gone the other way.

  38. ... December 23rd, 2008 at 3:59 pm

Say, did anybody else see on nbcsports an hour ago that the Nats reportedly offered 8 years/184 mil? It’s taken down now, but was it ever true or not?

  39. rodg12 December 23rd, 2008 at 4:00 pm

Of course ESPN bashes us for spending too much money as soon as this happens. Yammers on and on about us having the four highest paid players in baseball. WE PAID WHAT THE MARKET BEARED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Teixeria career at Yankee Stadium

    26 games -

    .305, 8 doubles, 5 HRs, 21 RBIs

  42. Don Capone December 23rd, 2008 at 4:00 pm

Holy crap! How many days till pitchers & catchers? :-D

  43. Patrick December 23rd, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Tex is a great signing for sure but it also introduces its share of problems. Signing Tex to such a big deal limits the amount of money the Yankees can spend on a fifth starter and on bench players. Sure the offense is upgraded but the outfield defense gets worse, the starting pitching gets worse and the bench will probably be worse.

Looks like Pettitte’s Yankee career is finished.

Also, what happened to all that talk about reducing payroll and having roster flexibility. This signing flies in the face of both of those ideas.

I guess the Yankees will just have to bite the bullet in 2009 with respect to the payroll and hopefully reduce it some in 2010.

Tex is a great player but I certainly wouldn’t have signed him.

  44. Forntoso December 23rd, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Kellerman is the best… so glad he was on as this news broke.

  45. Quatro Von Eckhart December 23rd, 2008 at 4:02 pm

I’m very suprised. I don’t think Tex is worth 180 million necessarily but he’s a good player and I’m happy. Boston must be loving it. :)

    Reposting from last thread..

“Also, does anyone know what the official (or as close to official as possible) word on what Boston’s final offer was? ”

This was never about Boston’s offer.

What has become clear now – absolutely clear – Boston got played here.

Theo and John Henry were used.

If the deal is 8/170 all the yankees did was pay market value. I’d guess this is what the sox offer was and perhaps less than the nats.

But ultimately once the market settled Tex had boras cut a deal with the yankees.

Tex wanted to play for the yankees. That was likely his preference from the start.

At 8/170 it’s not as if the yankees simply blew away all other offers as they did with CC. All of the offers were clustering together.

He could have had Boras shop the offer back to Boston but I guess Cashman said we’ll pay you fairly but if we start this negotiation it ends now. No more back and forth.

He picked the yankees – the money was the same.

does any body know our total for next season? Over 200 million or we are still under!

  53. Ed - Teixeria, a Yankee? NO way!!!! December 23rd, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Joe Girardi must be really happy right now. He now has soo many options to rotate the line up.

  54. Ralow December 23rd, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Patrick, don’t be so quick to say that Pettitte is done as a Yankee. For all we know, Tex’s deal is back loaded and they still have room to sign Pettitte to a one year $10M deal. Plus, our bench is actually improved with Swisher on the bench now.

  55. TEXIERA!!!!!!!! December 23rd, 2008 at 4:03 pm

first off, it was pretty obvious tex wants to be a Yankee from day 1. and as happy as i am im still not sure that if papi and beckett are healthy we are the favorites.

  58. Jack Bauer December 23rd, 2008 at 4:04 pm

I agree with Chris Russo just now -

We now have to win and we lost whatever good feeling we had and the rest of America won’t care when we win because we just buy our way to a title and there is no good feeling around us.

  59. G. Love December 23rd, 2008 at 4:04 pm

I wonder if Henry and Theo can still write off that trip to Texas to lock up Tex from last week?

Seriously, this is a coup people and Cashman did the job other GM’s in the game could do…he closed on arguably the top 3 free agents on the board, didn’t trade anything of value and rebuilt a rotation and improved the batting order and infield defense.

I’m one of the fans who don’t care about the money spent and by all accounts, Atlanta was willing to spend what we spent on AJ and Boston and Washington were willing to spend what we spent on Tex.

Cashman used the weight his position gives him and closed and made NY the place to be again.

As a GM he’s made a complete turnaround in my eyes from where he looked like he wanted to lead this team last season.

I love these moves. I love that he let the Red Sox strut and fluff their feathers and make media proclamations that led to them losing out the player they “targeted” for so long.

If Tex wanted to go to Boston, he would have ended up there.

He wanted to be a Yankee and I’m happy that Cash played this situation the way he did.

He made Theo and Henry look like they’ve lost a step in these negotiations.

And now he has a chip in Nady to trade for something awesome.

Great great news and what a day to be a Yankee fan.

  60. rodg12 December 23rd, 2008 at 4:04 pm

    CB,

Great catch on the Kat O’Brien story yesterday about the Yanks saying they could keep payroll the same as last year. Really opened the door for this signing. I’ll be interested to see the final contract details and if it’s back-loaded or anything like that. Man, what a great day to be a Yankee fan. I’d absolutely love it if he took less from us than the Red Sox offer.

  61. CALIBER 08 December 23rd, 2008 at 4:04 pm

YES!!! YES!!! YES!!!!! This is so AWESOME!!! We needed a 1st baseman and a big bat.. We got a switch hitting power hitter with excellent defense that grew up idolizing Don Mattingly. What could be better? THANK YOU STEINBRENNERS AND GREAT JOB CASHMAN!

  62. Mike Stanley December 23rd, 2008 at 4:04 pm

It’s too much. Makes the league look silly – I don’t care how much money is “coming off the books.”
Top four highest paid players in baseball are Yankees.
    Too much.

  65. Guy Incognito December 23rd, 2008 at 4:04 pm

Not only does Teixeira have legit power himself, he’ll also make A-Rod better (I’m assuming Tex is going to hit in the 3-hole).

  66. CB December 23rd, 2008 at 4:04 pm

    Reposting from last thread…

“I hear what you are saying about Boras going to Cash rather than vice versa. The fact still remains, Boras got a gigantic contract for Teixeira.”

    Patrick,

Here is where I disagree and this is the crux of my argument.

Boras did not get a gigantic deal for Tex. Not at all.

Tex got a gigantic deal for Tex.

The yankees paid him fair market value for his talent and performance.

Let me ask you this – what marginal value did Boras add to this? How much of Boras’ games and negotiating tactics work here?

They seemed to work only minimally. They tried to get Boston to bid against themselves last week. It’s clear they were playing boston. If they could get boston to up the deal then they can put pressure on the yanks. Henry calls the bluff.

Boras drags it out – the angels drop out.

Boras tries to drum up a $200M offer from the Nats. Don’t think it happened.

Cashman let Boras try to play his games and watched them flail.

Then he simply paid Tex fair market value for Tex’s talents.

This was not a boras deal – this wasn’t a case where boras’s negotiating skills added large marginal value to the deal tex got.

This is similar to ARod last year. The yanks were fine with paying him what they thought he was worth in terms of the market and revenue generation.

What they didn’t want to bother with was boras and his games.

Tex earned this deal. He had multiple offers all pricing him at this level. The market emerged based on his talent.

This was about Tex – not Boras.

That’s why the negotiations on Cash’s part were so well done.

  67. Scott December 23rd, 2008 at 4:05 pm

how does that crow taste, pete? I said several weeks ago there was no way in hell the yankees were going to go into next season with a blackhole at first base. All you have to do is take a look at who the Yankees last 3 first basemen have been…Mattingly, Tino Martinez, Giambi. Yankees weren’t downgrading.

Merry Christmas Yankee fans! Santa Cashman delivered.

  73. Jeremy December 23rd, 2008 at 4:06 pm

    Patrick,

You don’t pass up a great player Teixeira who fills a need for the foreseeable future because you’re concerned about signing a fifth starter or bench players. Those kinds of players are, by their nature, inexpensive.

The Yankees are probably unique in that they would even consider signing a fifth starter to a $10 million deal. And if the Yankees still want Pettitte, I guarantee you they will sign him. If they don’t, it’s because they can spend that money better elsewhere.

A good bench is the product of luck more than anything else. It’s cobbled together from limited prospects and limited veterans. No team, not even the Yankees, expends significant cash on its bench. The Yankees clearly put their emphasis on putting together an awesome group of starters and will deal with the bench as necessary.

  74. UptownGirl December 23rd, 2008 at 4:06 pm

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF US FROM THE New York Yankees!!!!!!!!!

    THIS IS HUGE!

  75. Guy Incognito December 23rd, 2008 at 4:06 pm

    Ed:

NO. Girardi messed with the lineup too much last year and it threw the entire offense out of whack. With players like these, if they stay healthy IMO you should send the same lineup out game after game.

  76. john December 23rd, 2008 at 4:07 pm

    As a tribute to Phil

    HOLY COW !!!!!!

It will be interesting to read about everything leading up to this decision and if the Sox once again ticked off Tex with their actions just like when he was drafted so much that two equal offers he wanted to play first for the Yankees just like his idle Mattingly.

Ladies and Gentlemen. The Yankees are back and legit !!

  77. jennifer December 23rd, 2008 at 4:07 pm

I don’t care what anyone thinks about what the Yankees did! We pay what we pay for our tickets because of the product they put on the field.

  84. Distd December 23rd, 2008 at 4:09 pm

IMO, this signing will now prompt Selig to instate a salary cap in baseball.

I’m a Yankee fan, but we are ruining the sport. Why would anyone watch next year? And even if we win, would anyone care?

We should be winning with homegrown stars, good scouting, smart business decisions, and role players. We are now just buying a title.

The owners were livid about us signing Sabathia, imagine what the reaction now after Burnett and Teixeria? I have no doubt a salary cap is upcoming.

  85. Ed H. December 23rd, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Outstanding. We’ve now got the top three FAs of the off-season.

You know, somehow I won’t miss Petitte. And I’m so glad that Manny won’t be in pinstripes. Don’t think I could have handled that.

Cashman met with Tex even before he met with CC. Thank you, George, Hal, Hank and Brian!!!

  86. Espresso December 23rd, 2008 at 4:09 pm

The best part of this (aside from the great 1b) is that Cashman has kept the farm with these moves. Its true that some draft picks are lost, but there is a hefty percentage that don’t work out. These guys are proven performers. There is some risk with Burnett.

I’d still like to see an innings eater added to the rotation, maybe Andy still. Without him there is too much risk to be comfortable with the pitching staff yet. Maybe the Yankees feel they can get production from the prospects if needed, if not in an every fifth day role. That would be fun too.

This lineup is going to produce and be deep and it is going to be more fun to watch than it has been for a while. Great hitters from top to bottom with decent power coming from a few spots.

  87. MoBoy(aka McLovin) December 23rd, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Well the Red Sox can always get the second best hitter in Manny….wait thats gonna be a problem.

Glad the Red Sox will have to settle for Pat Burrel.

  90. ray (sox fan) December 23rd, 2008 at 4:09 pm

This signals how evil the Evil Empire is. They could have gotten Manny and left Tex to the Sox. This was like a double win for them.

  91. JMAC December 23rd, 2008 at 4:09 pm

This is also addition by subtraction, as you know the other team in the mix would have been the Sox. No way Tex was going to the Nationals…I wonder if there was any chair throwing by Theo Epstein, reminiscent of the Contreras incident.

  92. TexasYanksfan December 23rd, 2008 at 4:10 pm

What a great Christmas! Thanks, Yankees management!

  93. jay destro December 23rd, 2008 at 4:10 pm

  94. Wave Your Hat December 23rd, 2008 at 4:10 pm

“Signing Tex to such a big deal limits the amount of money the Yankees can spend on a fifth starter and on bench players.”

Signing Tex improves the bench, as Swisher gives us an extra outfielder and lets Gardner be used in a defensive substitute/pinch running/occasional starter role.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they still try to sign Pettitte. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think they could sign Pettitte for around $10MM and still be around last year’s payroll.

It feels good to be a Yankee fan today.

Pete was wrong for considering the yankees out and saying that you should stop visiting the crack dealers if you think mark is coming here. For someone with so much knowledge of the yankees, how can you count them out? I never thought they would do it but im not surprised. Never says never and pete did. We are talking about the YANKEES.

IMO, Matsui should be the 4th outfielder on the bench

Damon at DH, Nady in left, Gardner in Center, Swisher in right.

That team would be sick defensively.

  105. luis December 23rd, 2008 at 4:12 pm

impacto deportivo had it all wrong, tex was the one signing with the yankees :D :D

  106. 86w183 December 23rd, 2008 at 4:13 pm

Yanks are still well below last year’s payroll. Tex will be paid less than Giambi and he’s younger. Swisher will be paid less than Abreu and he’s younger.

CC and AJ will get about the same $$ that Mussina, Pavano and Pettite got. Even with Pettite back at $ 10 million the payroll will be reduced and the Yanks will be younger in at least five spots. That’s consistent with what they’ve said all along.

It’s not consistent with the media created $ 180 million target that no Yankees official ever mentioned.

I agree packaging some assets for a high level set up man might make sense, but I really like the bullpen talent on hand.

For those who like to rip the Yankees for “buying” the pennant this will just get them yelling louder, but it’s never been true. They spend the most money, but they make the most money and it would be irresponsible to pocket that cash instead of investing it in trying to win and reward their customers. That’s a point the Lupica type critics never acknowledge. They never say what the payroll should be or why it would be more acceptable for them to keep their cash.

Do you realize Johnny Damon is the only other key Yankee for 2009 who came in as a FA from other teams? Everyone else is through international signings, player development or trade.

  107. CB December 23rd, 2008 at 4:13 pm

“Tex is a great signing for sure but it also introduces its share of problems. Signing Tex to such a big deal limits the amount of money the Yankees can spend on a fifth starter and on bench players.”

I wouldn’t assume that at all. In fact that only makes sense if we feel that we know what the budget is.

It’s clear now all of that budget cutting talk was just a snow job to gain some leverage in the free agent market where they were planning on going all in.

That’s why I kept posting on Kat O’Brien writing in he column today that the team wanted to keep the budget at $209M after all off season they’d been telling her and the other beat reporters that they wanted to cut payroll.

Why were they leaking this information now after all of that talk about fiscal discipline and budget cutting?

They are going for the jugular right now. They want to christen the new stadium with a WS championship.

I think Andy will be back in pinstripes.

  108. James December 23rd, 2008 at 4:13 pm

CB: At least someone was paying attention. :-) Thanks.

Truth is not only did Tex prefer the Yankees and Georgia not wanting to go to Boston.. Mark really didn’t want to go to Boston (The City) either. He has respect for the team and did not entirely rule them out.

As a Yankee fan I have not seen/heard the same love for the Yankees expressed since Jeter.. i.e. “I have wanted to be a Yankee since I was a child” ..expect Mark to say that publicly in the future.

He will be an instant hit with Yankee fans when he shares his passion for the pinstripes..

Will the Yankees allow him to where #23? Will Donny approve?

This wreaks of the “Bring in the All Star” agenda and I am not yet on board with whatever logic people will place upon the decision.

Having said that, he is a nasty bat, great 1B, and should help the team a lot.

Now I have to take 100 times the shots for being a West Coast Yankee fan, not that I’ve ever minded before. We better win it all soon, that’s all I am going to say.

  136. Thanks, Hal, Hank and Brian!!! December 23rd, 2008 at 4:20 pm

I think the Yanks are definitely going to trade Nady or Swisher. Most likely Nady since he would be more attractive to other teams since it is only a 1 year deal and Swisher is still owed $21m. I could see the Yanks trading Nady to the Mets.

  137. Lloyd Braun December 23rd, 2008 at 4:20 pm

    Red Sox fan here,

    Congrats on Teixeira! But…

Sabathia replaces Mussina. Mussina was 20-9 last year. How much better is that?

Burnett, will he win Pettitte’s 14? Burnett is fragile and a head case.

Teixeira replaces Giambi. Giambi was 32 and 96 last year. Bobby Abreu was 20 and 100.

Your defense is still atrocious. Pitching and D is the key.

Should make the rivalry even more fun!!!

Just saying, congrats, but don’t plan any parades yet.

  138. dave December 23rd, 2008 at 4:21 pm

    SWEEEEEEEEET!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is perhaps the best off season of all time.

Pete – THIS IS OUR TIME…

    Lineup:

    Damon
    Jeter
    Arod
    Tex
    Matsui
    Posada
    Swisher/Nady
    Cano
    Gardner

    Rotation

    Sabathia
    Wang
    Burnett
    Chamberlain
    Aceves

With many a few tweaks here and there (Gardner and Aceves ) this is OUR TIME Pete. Never underestimate [the yanks FO off the most embarrassing season in years.

This is such an amazing day to be a yankee fan. I think the cameron trade would actually work out for us with tex batting third – 1 year of cameron for melky and minimum salary improves the defense and lineup. We cant trade nady until we know for sure what swish will give us. Nady wouldnt bring us back a centerfielder or fifth starter which is all we need at this point and neither is needed.

Sorry Andy Pettitte … thanks for all the good years.

I’m guessing Swisher will be around as 1B/OF backup, at least until the trade deadline. After spring training starts, that’s the next threshold for the OF to get addressed. Still:

Tiexiera + Swisher Manny for all-around improvement.

  152. Espresso December 23rd, 2008 at 4:24 pm

I think the Yankees were probably not planning on getting Tex. My guess is that the market for corner outfielders and big bats has surprised most people. When the price stayed reasonable (if you can call it reasonable) why not jump?

This is better than signing Giambi for a few reasons. He can play both sides of the ball, it appears he wasn’t a juicer, his big contract is signed 7 years later. One more reason, he isn’t a super star diva.

    Its all speculation really.

  153. JR Yankees December 23rd, 2008 at 4:24 pm

  154. Bobby December 23rd, 2008 at 4:25 pm

I think the team’s set now except for possibly Pettitte:

    Damon LF/CF
    Jeter SS
    Teixeira 1B
    Arod 3B
    Posada C
    Matsui DH
    Nady RF
    Cano 2B
    Swisher LF/CF

    Bench:
    Molina
    Ransom
Melky (he’s out of options I believe)
    Gardner

    Rotation: CC,Wang,Burnett,Joba,Pettitte/Hughes
    Bullpen: Mo,Marte,Bruney,Edwar,Coke,Veras, Aceves/Giese/other long man

  155. Ryan December 23rd, 2008 at 4:25 pm

  156. KoA December 23rd, 2008 at 4:25 pm

Not that Pete needs defenders here but there wasn’t alot of “certainty” from anyone that the Yankees would pull this off. What he was arguing made sense. 174. Trevor December 23rd, 2008 at 4:31 pm

    “Why Swisher in RF?”

Just incase they look to trade Matsui. If they trade him I would move Damon to DH. That keeps him healthy and it’s not like you’ll be missing his steller (sarcasm) defense.
Nady stays in LF & Swisher would be in RF & Gardner in CF.

I forgot to say this, “Joe Mauer will also be a Yankee in 2011!” LOL

  182. dISGUSTINGMoney December 23rd, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Yankees have shelled out $413,500,000 in long term contracts so far this offseason (based on 8/170 for Tex).

They currently have 3 of the 5 active players with contracts with an AAV over $20MM (assuming Manny signs a contract with an AAV equal to or greater than his last contract).

    They have the highest AAV:

Starting pitcher CC Sabathia at $23MM
Relief Pitcher Mariano Rivera at $15MM
First Baseman Mark Teixeira at $21.25MM
    Catcher Jorge Posada at $13.1MM
    Shortstop Derek Jeter at $18.9MM
Third Baseman Alex Rodriguez at $27.5MM (excluding insane incentives)

Additionally they have the third highest AAV Second Baseman Robinson Cano at $7.5MM and the sixth highest AAV Starting Pitcher AJ Burnett at $16.5MM. and both the eighth highest AAV OF Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui at $13MM each.

Their current payroll is at $191.1MM using AAV not including any of the 40 man roster not on the 25 man, nor does it include anything for benefits. It only includes 7 pitchers (Sabathia, Burnett, Wang, Chaimberlan, Hughes, Rivera and Marte)

“We now have to win and we lost whatever good feeling we had and the rest of America won’t care when we win because we just buy our way to a title and there is no good feeling around us.”

Who cares what the rest of America thinks when we win championships?

  185. Nick in SF in Charlotte December 23rd, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Charlotte is actually nicer right now than it was in SF over the weekend. But it’s not as balmy as Impacto Deportivo said it was going to be.

Pete Abe is on TV right now.

  186. Eric S December 23rd, 2008 at 4:35 pm

This is a great day to be a yankee fan. Now you can really see how much Hank and Hal love their father. They are breaking the bank to give him and NY # 27.
After everything George has done for the Yankees, NY and any charity he’s ever donated to, he deserves to see atleast one more.

  187. Nick in SF in Charlotte December 23rd, 2008 at 4:36 pm

oops, sorry for the duplicate comment

    WOW!!!

  189. 86w183 December 23rd, 2008 at 4:44 pm

Pete doesn’t owe anyone an apology. He voiced a strong opinion that turned ut to be wrong. Eat crow, absolutely, but never apologize for an opinion. As a meda guy myslef you do have to have a level of confidence or call it arrogance to sell your point of view. Pete’s batting average is pretty damn good and this is a great forum.

Why focus on that when this should be a day of ceebrating the signing of the best position player on the market.

I wouldn’t move Swisher or Nady unless it was part of a deal that brings in a less expensive # 5 starter or an A-list set up man. Right now they have a nice mix of players for the OF/DH roles which guarantees an improved bench. I see them using Melky and Gardner to rest veterans and play lots of late inning defense.

  190. CHRIS December 23rd, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Haha nice job on ESPNEWS Pete!

  191. RockinDaBronx December 23rd, 2008 at 4:50 pm

he should take number 26, keep the line of succession going.

  192. Harley December 23rd, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Pete doesn’t owe anybody anything. But it’s still pretty funny. All we need is an old SNL youtube clip of Emily Latella saying…”Never mind.”

  193. BBB December 23rd, 2008 at 5:06 pm

This is a truly great day for the Yankees franchise. I love that the money was the same and he picked us. Pinstripes are shining bright today. And it’s all because of one of the greatest Yankees of all time. Thank you Donnie!!!

I think they should let Teix wear #23 for a day. I bet Mattingly would be okay with it.

  194. Rock Hoover December 23rd, 2008 at 5:21 pm

This is exactly what is wrong with Major League Baseball!!!!

  195. Ed from bklyn December 23rd, 2008 at 5:22 pm

Sign Manny for one year…… :-)

  196. Tom December 23rd, 2008 at 6:28 pm

Bless this mess. And now sign Manny, lol.

  197. JOJO December 23rd, 2008 at 6:31 pm

If this is “what’s wrong with MLB” don’t watch MLB. Is someone coming into your house forcing you to watch? The Yankees aren’t given money…they earn it. Then they put it back into the club and the cycle continues. Whether they win or not, they constantly attempt to put a winning ball club on the field. That’s why I’m a Yankee fan.

  198. Ed from bklyn December 23rd, 2008 at 7:24 pm

Lets get the Red Sox whiny organization upset by signing manny. Stop whining about how we run our Organization. The yankees earn every single bit they spend. The yankees payroll will prob be less than last year. Tex 3rd, Arod 4th, Manny 5th. Wow…..

  199. Ed from bklyn December 23rd, 2008 at 7:26 pm

Lets get the Red Sox whiny organization upset by signing manny. Stop whining about how we run our Organization. The yankees earn every single bit they spend. The yankees payroll will prob be less than last year.

    Look at this line-up
    1 player a
    2 player b
    3 Texeira
    4 Arod
    5 Manny
    6 player c
    7 player d
    8 player e
    9 player f

No matter who you put in that lineup, we will win over 100 games. Considering our pitching line-up. Forget pettite and use Hughes.

  200. GGTM December 24th, 2008 at 7:09 am

Hi there Pete … Merry Christmas … hope this signing teaches you to never say never when it comes to the Yankees … you’ve been telling us for a while that the Yankees wouldn’t be doing this move after getting CC and AJ … well there is one thing that is much better than Manny being Manny … and is much more reliable … the Yankees being the Yankees … love me my Yankees Pete!

  201. NY Fan December 24th, 2008 at 12:50 pm

this team is going to win 140 games…I’m calling it now-the best team in baseball history!

  202. Paulie D December 24th, 2008 at 2:04 pm

“this team is going to win 140 games…I’m calling it now-the best team in baseball history!”

this kind of attitude is trouble.

It’s all about pitching and health.
