Good luck Bernie! You are a true Yankee and demonstrated a loyalty to the fans and team that most players can only dream of. Why didn't Andy see your shining example?

"How can we all give Bernie a hard time for wanting to play more? Give him a break, baseball is in his blood and he left baseball on someone else’s terms. He wants to go out when HE decides its time. You would want to do the same."

Bernie is just like every other player in baseball history who has become too old or too injured to play. The overwhelming majority of these players retire at that point because they realize their baseball careers are over. Many of those players probably still want to play too, but understand they can't.

"If he wants to try and play, let him do it, who are we to tell him when to retire."

We are Yankee fans who want closure on Bernie's career so we can celebrate his accomplishments without feeling like he's got some bizarre grudge against the team.

I wanted to see Bernie play for PR. It would have been a nice way to see him in action for the last time. I'm just saying that now that the WBC is out of the equation for Bernie, it's time for him to call it quits and get the "proper ceremony" you mentioned.

If you really think that Bernie should postpone retirement indefinitely, in what capacity do you think he will ever play baseball again?

Eventually, when he's ready to call it quits, the Yankees should give him a proper ceremony and retire his number.

A great Yankee whose number should be retired. He had so many clutch hits for the Yankees and in his day he covered alot of ground in CF. I only wish Bernie and his family well. If he recovers fine if not okay too, whatever is best for Bernie. I wish he could have played more I know he had some more key hits in him but maybe time to move on after a tough injury!

I don't blame Bernie for attempting one last "comeback" through the upcoming WBC. After all, there's virtually no chance he will be capable of playing in the next WBC, and no MLB team will have him. If he were still good enough to make the Puerto Rican team, it's not like he would be taking the space of a superstar player. This was Bernie's last chance to play (somewhat) meaningful baseball against MLB players.

I do agree with 86w183, though, that this is the end for Bernie and he needs to realize that. All Yankee fans should appreciate Bernie, but there's nothing wrong with being a Yankee fan and also thinking that Bernie's refusal to retire leaves a bad taste.

Bernie isn't like Rickey Henderson, a lock for the HOF who wasn't primarily associated with a single team. Henderson's refusal to retire (and delaying of his HOF induction) cemented his reputation as one of baseball's greatest characters. Bernie is 100% Yankee and won't make the HOF. His refusal to retire just prevents Yankee fans from getting closure on his career.

Bernie's baseball career made him extremely wealthy and he has his music to keep him busy now. (I'm sure he can make even more money selling his music to the department stores of the world.) If he holds a grudge against the Yankees for some reason, he needs to drop it. He should retire and coordinate some show of appreciation for his career with the Yankees. Bernie Williams Day would be a great addition to the schedule for the new stadium.

Bernie does not need to recover from his injury. He needs to move on. I don't want to see him in the WBC this year or whenever the next incarnation of this idiotic non event takes place. Stick to the guitar Bern. You had a great career, but now is not the time to become a cartoon character.

Jets need to hire Cowher and move on from Favre. For all his records, Brett's "standard" of 310 interceptions is the one that will last the longest.
