For nightlife, there are a couple nice spots on or near South Howard Avenue south of Kennedy Avenue like Mangroves, the Kennedy which just opened, and Hyde Park Cafe where you might see a few of the players out during Spring Training. Macdintons is a big irish pub that is more of a casual atmosphere w/a nice outdoor deck if you are not into clubs.

My dad and I go down every year. It's a great experience. We've been going since I was in high school.

One place to eat that we always hit is Capogna's Dugout in Clearwater. It's not close if you're in Tampa, but it's near the Phillies' park on Gulf-to-Bay Blvd. Great pizza and wings.

(and if you're in Tampa, it's still worth the drive)

The Phillies park is real nice. In fact, a much better experience then Legends field as far as security allowing close access to the field etc.

Joe's Crab Shack is a very popular, good (chain, not fancy) seafood restaurant in clearwater.

Also, for those fans the original Hooters restaurant is also in Clearwater!

Peter,
Couldn't agree with you more here. I've gone to spring training every year for about 10 years now and nothing seems to make the players more angry than when an unruly fan bothers them as they try to pull out their car. A few years ago I watched a collector chase Mariano's car with a bat. Its a good thing he had a sharpie in the other hand or he might be in jail.

Hey folks, I booked a hotel for ST. Just as a friendly FYI, I used Priceline and named my price and got a 3.5 star Sheraton Suite for $65 a night! It stinks you can't pick the hotel, but it still rocked anyway, again, if anyone is going at the same time, shoot me a message and we can car pool to the away games. jonathan_everettNG@yahoo.com

I went to spring training last year, and am planning to go again this year. I will probably drive down, because flying is such a headache these days. (If I'd flown down last year, I'd have spent three days in the Atlanta airport, since they grounded the planes due to bad rivets or some such thing.)

Pete's advice to see the Yanks at away games was very good. I love Bright House Field (the Phillies' new stadium).

I went to baseball games every day when I was down there last March. Sometimes, I went to two games a day. It was great. I'm not really into autographs, but I got a lot of nice photos. I enjoyed seeing the prospects, and also former Yankee players now playing for different teams.

Chad Jennings at the SWB Yankees blog usually posts a minor league spring training schedule. (If you want to see the minor league games, go in the second half of March.) They are free, and really laid back. Almost like Little League games.
