MLB Network starts up on Thursday

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Dec 30, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The MLB Network officially kicks off Thursday at 6 p.m. with its Hot Stove Live show. Then at 7 p.m., they will show Don Larsen’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series against Brooklyn.

There will be commentary from Larsen and Yogi Berra.

Just for kicks, here’s the box score and play-by-play from that game. Did you realize the Yankees didn’t get anybody on base until Mickey Mantle homered with two outs in the fourth inning? Sal Maglie pitched a gem, too.

Anyway, if you want to see MLB Network, their web site has a way to check your zip code to find out your status.

Cablevision announced today that they have picked MLB Network up. The network will be available in HD on channel 790 and in standard-definition on channels 149 and 400.

its a great network. i’ve been watching the preview shows and it looks like it will be a great success.

Baseball 24/7/365. is there anything better than that?

They also have different stuidos numbered after baseball players. Studio 3 for Ruth and Studio 42 for Jackie Robinson (and of course Mariano Rivera)

  2. vin December 30th, 2008 at 7:05 pm

    Sweet… good old DirecTV – channel 213.

  3. Buddy Biancalana December 30th, 2008 at 7:06 pm

  4. Bronx Jeers December 30th, 2008 at 7:06 pm

On Time Warner here in NY it will be channel 174.

  5. Phil December 30th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Not sure Comrade Bud needs a bigger megaphone, but hopefully there will be some fair objective coverage at times.

  6. Tom December 30th, 2008 at 7:17 pm

So, looks as if I will not be watching on friday:

Cablevision has been running the MLB Network for like three weeks already, but it’s the same hour long loop, and has too much of the 2004 playoffs in it. Damn bloody sock.

  8. Trevor December 30th, 2008 at 7:21 pm

Is it in HD with Direct TV?

  9. Bronx Jeers December 30th, 2008 at 7:21 pm

I see Al Leiter is working there.

I wish Jim Kaat would do something.

  10. Bronx Jeers December 30th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

So, looks as if I will not be watching on friday”

Yeah what’s up with the Red Sox shows? Is Gammons doing the programming?

And it’s only Part 1 ! Great, a series of Sox related propaganda!

  11. dave December 30th, 2008 at 7:31 pm

old news. cablevision has had the network on its service for over a week.

  12. Bronx Jeers December 30th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

And Hazel Mae is doing a show.

I’m starting to get a bad feeling about this.

  13. manny(yanksfan)GET MANNY AND HIS DREAD LOCKS December 30th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

    Yes. Yankees baseball 24/7/365.

  15. sevrox December 30th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Anybody give a review/comparison of Verizon FIOS TV vs. Comcast Digital?

A concerned consumer in PA has a need-to-know because his Comcast technician left a below ground cable TV above ground as the technician who came out prior neglected to mark all of the below ground CATV lines that were subsequently sliced by the geothermal guys laying the below ground lines.

    It’s all so freakin’ complicated.

    Thanks.

  16. sevrox December 30th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

should read “below ground TV cable”

In other words – I’d like to switch to Verizon FIOS if it’s indeed better than Comcast digital – and does FIOS carry MLB ExtraInnings package?

  17. jason December 30th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

    Channel 391 RCN-Boston!
Will they carry games live or does one still need the baseball package if he is out of market?

  18. S.o.S. December 30th, 2008 at 8:00 pm

    sevrox,
I switched a year ago from comcast to Verizon Fios. Havnt regretted it one bit and think its better. Have on demand and it looks clearer than comcast did.

Im S.O.S. and I approve this message.

  19. Gus G. December 30th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Ugh… Time Warner Cable in Albany, Channel: TBD. Awesome.

  20. Run Gardner Run (yeah, the one that got Banned from PSD by a RS fan)) December 30th, 2008 at 8:51 pm

channel 174 here. No HD yet…

    Reposting from the previous thread:

Doreen, I usually agree with you, but not this time. I don’t feel badly for Andy at all. First off, IMO, the $10 million offer is more than fair. Andy is not CC or Burnett….it’s not like the Yankees gave big bucks to a couple of mediocre wannabes. If he wants more $$$, let him go put himself truly on the market – who’s going to give him what he wants? No one. I’m tired of his act and his “I only want to pitch for the Yankees” comment is less than believable at this point. The Yankees have to make a move towards solidifying the 5th spot in their rotation – and sooner rather than later. It’s only a month and a half until pitchers and catchers. Andy’s lack of acceptance is tantamount to a rejection, so If I’m the Yankees, I go and find a cheap, servicable starter who can bridge the gap to Phil in 2010.

Speaking of Phil, the Andy situation should in no way affect his own. I believe the Yankees regret rushing him in 2007 and now want to rectify this. Injuries have not allowed him to pitch consistently – he can get that in AAA. He can also refine his repertoire and regain his FB command (all he has to do is pitch and that will come back to him). He’s almost, but not quite ready. The Yankees should have their franchise revoked if they decide that they are going to seriously consider Phil for the 5th spot (should Andy not re-sign) if they currently believe he’s not ready for it. They need to have a plan for him and stick with it.

  22. Tony December 30th, 2008 at 9:08 pm

FIOS has it on channel 86 in the NY area, no HD yet, and yes they are carrying the MLB extra inning package.

  23. sevrox December 30th, 2008 at 9:20 pm

S.o.S. ‘n Tony – danke for the info

  24. Distd December 30th, 2008 at 9:23 pm

They have no option other than Hughes. They are in it to win it this year. Hughes half developed is better than Kennedy, Aceves, Chase Wright, Igawa etc.

They are not going to put a crap pitcher in the 5th spot and lose games when they have Hughes there, albeit not fully developed.

  25. yanks 1927 December 30th, 2008 at 9:24 pm

umm… andy’s situation DOES affect hughes. if he comes back, he gets another year to develop in the minors. if not, then hughes is thrown back into the fire and handed the 5th spot

who else is there? ian kennedy? aceves is nothing special either.

  26. James 3D December 30th, 2008 at 9:26 pm

Even if Hughes doesn’t start the season in the majors, it’s not like whoever is in his place (Kennedy, Aceves, Coke etc.) is going to get a long leash. As soon as they have a bad start or two in a row, Hughes will be up here for better or for worse.

He has virtually no competition, he is better than all of his AAA companions.

  27. 86 BKN December 30th, 2008 at 9:32 pm

They should have their franchise revoked if they put their promising young pitcher (who already won a playoff game and pitched to a league average ERA in 2007 as a 21 yr old) as the 5th starter behind stars like Wang, Sabathia, Joba, and Burnett?

Wow. No wonder they say you can’t play kids or rebuild in NY.

  28. j2 December 30th, 2008 at 9:34 pm

    Gus,

TBD here in Rochester, too. Have you called TimeWarner about it? If so, what did they say?

  29. FTW YANKS December 30th, 2008 at 9:35 pm

He barely threw his change-up at all in the AFL (according to that guy on Pinstripes Plus who saw him back in Nov), so I’m not sure what their plan is exactly. That tells me they sent him there for results rather than to work on things. Which shows that they think he can learn his change on the fly here in the big leagues. I don’t agree with their strategy but clearly he is going to be the #5 pitcher here if there is no Andy, so we’ll see soon enough.

  30. S.o.S. December 30th, 2008 at 9:36 pm

Pros on putting Hughes at the 5th spot.
    a. He cant have a worse start than last years. Keep in mind he had a good start to spring training till the end of it when i believe he hurt something.

    b. He will be the first called up if there is an injury anyways.

    c. He doesnt cost us 16 million to pitch.

    d. As far as innings cap is concerned. Use him till the all star break where we can get something good at the trade deadline.

    e. His fastball has increased and if his control is there. I dont see him struggling like the 08 season. I still think he was hurt prior to announcing the rib injury. Which in turn made him bomb in some starts.

Control, health and a couple extra mph on his fastball=(Success)Hughes your Daddy.

  31. stripes 77 December 30th, 2008 at 9:40 pm

Aceves is the flavor of the month, just like Kennedy was last September. He isin’t very good. Once teams see him on film and scout him, he will get pounded. His best role is a long man/spot starter. Guys like him are very effective in short spurts or to fill in. Laughable that people think he can challenge a healthy Hughes.

Hughes will win the 5th spot by default

  32. Distd December 30th, 2008 at 9:40 pm

    S.O.S,

    Agree 100%.

    J2:

DirecTV will offer MLB Network, including its high-definition signal, on Ch. 213. Peter Taubkin, a vice president at Time Warner’s Albany Division, said the launch date and channel placement for the new network has not been determined. Time Warner’s corporate office has reached an agreement to air the network.

    http://blogs.timesunion.com/sportsmedia/?p=745

  35. j2 December 30th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Tom, Thanks for the info re Time Warner. Guess that means they won’t air the network on Thursday, but will eventually.

  36. Tom December 30th, 2008 at 9:55 pm

J2, My cousin goes to St. John Fisher and he’s more concerned with getting the MLB network there then he is school. He even went so far to email Time Warner. They told him it will be on “soon”.

  37. Devon December 30th, 2008 at 10:03 pm

I live just outside of Rochester and I saw on the internet that it will be on channel 238 in Rochester. But when I tried to tune in it isn’t on yet.

  38. Doreen December 30th, 2008 at 10:03 pm

    Betsy -
I may think Pettitte is worth the Yankees increasing their offer, but I do not feel sorry for him if they don’t do that. He’s living a dream and making a fortune doing so. Even if he’s pitched his last inning and leaves with no fanfare, I would not feel sorry for him. But I do hope he accepts the Yankees offer, whatever it ends up being, because I think right now he’s the best option to start the season as their #5 (4) starter.

    Tom,

    “Soon”!? Ugh.

School’s between semesters right now, so maybe your cousin is okay with his/her priorities–for the moment. If he/she finds the network airing in the next few days, let me know. I’d appreciate the shout out.

  41. j2 December 30th, 2008 at 10:10 pm

    Devon,

Many thanks for the channel info. Just tried 238 (I’m also just outside Rochester), and no go.

  42. j2 December 30th, 2008 at 10:11 pm

That crazy “j2″ targeted at James was not me.

  43. max December 30th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Watching the looped show of what the channel is about and the studios and stuff, they mentioned that they can do live “look-ins” at games that are happening. I guess that’s pretty cool since they have the rights to all the games, right?
I just wonder how often they’ll do it. The show said they have cameras at every ball park, should at least be interesting to see how/when they use it…

  44. Matt December 30th, 2008 at 10:31 pm

Call cablevision. I am currently getting it but I don’t know if it matters which package you have.

  56. AROD fan December 30th, 2008 at 11:51 pm

    from mlbtr:

Having missed out on the Teixeira Sweepstakes, the Orioles appear to be looking at Richie Sexson as an option…

    ——

Having missed out on one of the best 1B, the Orioles are now looking at the worst. Both are overpriced, so this makes logical sense.

Why don’t the O’s look at the Giambino?

I guarantee that Comcast adds it to it’s stupid Sports Package that you have to pay extra for, like they did with NFL Network. Ugh.

  59. Marcus December 31st, 2008 at 12:02 am

Here in North Carolina, Time Warner has it TBD.

  60. AROD fan December 31st, 2008 at 12:02 am

Totally off topic: Following teh Manny link on mlbtr to the LA times article, I ended up following a link to the LA times “most overrated destinations” article. Seattle #3? Ok, SERIOUSLY. That’s like Pete posting an article about the most overrated ball clubs and making Boston #3.

  61. Buddy Biancalana December 31st, 2008 at 12:11 am

I have Comcast in Cali & there is no extra charge for the MLB Network.

  62. Betsy December 31st, 2008 at 12:14 am

Umm, Yanks1927, what I’m saying is that Andy not re-signing should NOT affect what the plans for Phil are. If he’s not ready yet, then regardless of what happens – the kid should be in AAA. You have to have a plan for young players and then stick with it.

  63. Betsy December 31st, 2008 at 12:17 am

Doreen, I want Andy to return too, because he’s the best option for that spot in the rotation. I have to say, though, that if he does – I will feel a sense of relief, but not overwhelming joy. I don’t feel that good about him now.

  64. Betsy December 31st, 2008 at 12:18 am

Who’s this Hazel person on the MLB channel? I never heard of her. Sheesh – if she was just hired to be another pretty face, I will be disgusted.

The new YS is absolutely spectacular…..

  65. jennifer December 31st, 2008 at 12:23 am

I saw Grand Toreno tonight. Good movie, not for those easily offended.d

  66. sunny615 December 31st, 2008 at 12:28 am

With DirecTV – it’s a added cost. Sports or MLB package.

  67. Red Dragons December 31st, 2008 at 12:29 am

Betsy – Pretty attractive reporter (she’s no erin andrews though) who works for NESN. She was actually the president of the Red Sox fan club or something like that.

  68. 4 x 4 December 31st, 2008 at 12:30 am

Hazel was hired for eye candy… not that there is anything wrong with that ;-)

  69. Joaeph December 31st, 2008 at 12:32 am

Considering that Hughes is going to be in the rotation if we don’t sign Andy… he needs to seek out Burnett early in ST and pick his brain. I don’t think there is a better pitcher available to help him, they are very similar though Burnett is much more of a power pitcher.

  70. Fire Meachum December 31st, 2008 at 12:37 am

Just reading about MLB Network and the different personalities they are going to have… who the hell is going to watch Baseball Tonight anymore?

You can get your info from knowledgeable baseball guys or you can get it from Ravech, Phillips, Kruk, and Gammons. Not to mention the overkill you get from the likes of Fernando Vina and Eric Young.

Jim Kaat’s view on resigning Andy Pettitte. Of all of the baseball people around, it’s Jim Kaat’s views that I value most, eveb if I don’t always agree with everything. Nobody knows pitching any better than Kaat. And, I still beieve that he belongs in the HOF along with Blyleven and Tommy John. They weren’t just “very good…they were great.

    http://kaatskorner.mlblogs.com/

” ***Anyone know who they’re counting on to pitch the seventh and eighth inning yet? That’s where I’d spend my money. But, like I said earlier, I’m a pitching guy… I always have been, and I always will be. I’d overpay Andy Pettitte for one year because he’s “been” and “done” more than any of the new crop*** “

The players will establish residency in the DR or some other country besides the US. after they gets agents, they’ll get into playing shape and the agents will arrange an open tryout for the scouts to watch. They’ll petition baseball to be declared FAs and then, the bidding begins.

Mets have offered Lowe 3/$36m. Not quite the 5/$75m he wanted.

  82. john December 31st, 2008 at 8:26 am

Just looked at the first month schedule. Their first series is “Red Sox Memories” that loops for the month, a 6 part show. We are already starting off on the wrong foot here haha!!!

  83. john December 31st, 2008 at 8:31 am

Lowe could have taken the Yankees money right up front, but waited and is now hosed. Really the initial numbers were crazy and too much for a pitcher of his age. I am sure given what the Mets have offered the Sox could offer him a bit less and land him given he wants to go back there. Although I think the Sox are figuring out what happens when your championship team gets older and it gets harder to keep the momentum going. There is only one Manny, Varitek is pretty much done offensively and Big Papi is more like small Papi, looking a lot more like Giambi’s career path except Papi may be getting fatter. They are outthinking themselves now. Always seeking the Penny lightning in a bottle, Colon last year, and trying to go back to the same well with the Marlins thinking they are their exclusive minor league franchise and talent pool. Cashman was smart enough to hold onto prospects now, so Hanly Ramirez and others will always been in play for them as well, no more Beckett trades for Boston with the Yankees not being able to make an offer due to lack of talent.

  84. Betsy December 31st, 2008 at 8:36 am

Ugh, thanks Red Dragon. How am I supposed to take MLB Network seriously when they hire some woman with no real credentials just so she can look pretty on camera?

  85. MikeKU December 31st, 2008 at 8:50 am

It says channel 174 for Manhattan. However that channel did no exist. My bet is they will not have it. Seeing as though I still have like 15 HD channels. And if we are lucky, and they do have it, I’m sure the HD version will not come for another five years.

  86. Nick in SF December 31st, 2008 at 9:08 am

Did he swipe Andy’s mystery offer?

Hazel Mae has done radio or TV sports in both Canada and and the US for years so that’s not exactly lacking credentials.

  88. Doreen December 31st, 2008 at 9:13 am

I went to the MLB website and punched in my zip code for Comcast. It came up as channel 269. No such channel existed; however, I continued to “surf” and MLB channel was 280 here in Middlesex County, NJ. So, MikeKU, keep looking – it’s probably there somewhere! :)

  89. Doreen December 31st, 2008 at 9:17 am

It’s a real conundrum for female sportscasters – if they’re even mildly attractive, they’re accused of being eye candy and it takes some time for viewers to learn whether they’ve really got the goods. However, if a female sportscaster is more on the “Plain Jane” side, no amount of smarts can overcome the commentary about her looks. And it’s not just from the male viewers; sometimes I think the female viewers are even more critical.

Like it or not, looks count on television. Otherwise, Steve Phillips would be unemployed, wouldn’t he? :)

You get a job on a sports network for five different reasons…looks, sleeping with the boss, sports knowledge, connections or hating the Yankees? Which three fit Phillips the best? If you remove sports knowledge and looks, it doesn’t leave much?

Speaking of Time Warner (Has anyone seen this?

We are negotiating earnestly, honestly and fairly with MTV Networks, but so far have been unable to reach an agreement or get an extension.

MTV Networks may pull these channels from your lineup on January 1st.

Anyone know if the MLB channel is an extra cost on Brighthouse networks in the Tampa Bay area?

  94. Brian (Red Sox Fan) December 31st, 2008 at 9:52 am

    Betsy & Doreen,

Hazel Mae is attractive, well-spoken and prepared. I doubt if she’ll be used for any in-depth analysis, but she has an easy delivery and style ( no “uhs” or ‘ya knows”), which makes the viewer comfortable. She’ll pronounce the names right, know who plays for what teams, be historically grounded, and cognizant of current realities.

She won’t expound in depth over the difficulties of hitting & running on a no ball/2 strike count, but I’m sure she’ll fit in the role that MLB has for her.

Thanks for that info on Hazel Mae. It sounds like she’s what I like on tv – someone who approaches their job in a professional manner. :)

    Brian (Red Sox Fan),

I live in MA.Hazel Mae was not above getting in cheap shots at the Yankees, especially A Rod,when she worked for RedSoxzeira, I mean NESN. Of course, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not in the job description at NESN.

  98. Drive 4-5 December 31st, 2008 at 10:28 am

    Doreen,

I wouldn’t be suprised if Hazel Mae did a good job at the MLB Network. It can’t hurt to get away from the NESN environment.

To catch the late scores during the baseball season I watch the NESN early morning pre-recorded show while I get ready for work.I always thought it a bit odd that that they always made her do a show that starts at 5AM while wearing a tight skirt & stilletos. Odd, but not totally objectional lol

  99. Doreen December 31st, 2008 at 10:32 am

    Drive 4-5

They make the guys wear ties, so, I suppose it’s only fair that the ladies wear killer heels. I love a guy in a tie – my husband tells me it’s because I’ve never had to wear one. Same for men – if they ever had to wear stilettos they’d be outlawed.

  100. Brian (Red Sox Fan) December 31st, 2008 at 10:37 am

Drive 4-5 ……. Hazel Mae was working for the RS equivalent of the YES Network. She was fully aware of who signed her checks.

I was alluding to her ability to be competent in front of a camera, which is something many of the jocks who are doing “analysis” are totally devoid of.

I’m not pimping her for the broadcasting HOF … just stating that she can read copy and carry on “spontaneous” dialog w/o being awkward.

  101. randy l December 31st, 2008 at 10:38 am

    brian( red sox fan)-

red sox fans i know down here on the cape were stunned by the teixeira signing. they can’t even talk about it. once cashman went back to spending money which he’s very good at and decided to use resources that the red sox couldn’t match, it seems like the balance of power has switched back in the direction of the yankees.

the way i see it, the more cashman tried to beat the red sox at the game the red sox were playing , he was playing into theirs hands. the present management of the red sox red sox ,at their roots, value their system more than anyone player. players are disposable to them. they really think management is the star of the show.

the yankees strength is the ability to get players because of their financial resources. ironically this is more player friendly because players love to be paid a lot. i think the yankees are a team whose strength comes from it’s players and not it’s management. the opposite for the red sox.

cashman has gone back to what the yankees are all about and i think the yankees are back to being the yankees again, but the red sox are still going to be formidable as they have 40 million to spend this year alone.

on the day of the teixeira signing, i said to red sox friends taht the red sox would go after someone like hanley ramirez. the other shoe has to drop. when it does, the two teams will be very close on the field. the difference will be how they get to be very close on the field. the red sox will emphasize management and under emphasize players and the yankees will emphasize spending money and emphasizing players. the players are the star of the show on the yankees.

the yankees would never make stars like garciaparra, pedro, damon, manny, etc into the bad guys. the red sox can’t exactly have an old timers day when they try to turn all their stars into pariahs. the yankees hold on to their relationships with players. old timer’s days are no problem( sometimes even before they retire) for the yankees.

two different philosophies, but both can beat the other at various times. it should be a good year for the rivalry. i’m just glad cashman quit trying to be theo and has gotten back to being brian cashman.

it’s been fun sparring in the past year. have a good new year.

I find it amusing that some of the female posters on here must put down and insult any attractive female on a sports network. How much abuse has Kim Jones taken?

These women that are posting are most likely not very attractive themselves and put down female reporters like Hazel to make themselves feel good. Hazel actually has a decent amount of sports knowledge, but you’d never know it from reading some of these posts.

Its petty and kind of sad.

MLB Network Joins Charter, Cablevision’s Digital Lineups

    By Vlada Gelman

Charter Communications and Cablevision Systems will add the MLB Network to their digital lineups when the network launches on Jan. 1 at 6 p.m. ET.

The MLB Network will join the digital portion of Charter’s expanded basic lineup as well as Cablevision’s iO TV digital cable lineup of 68 free HD channels. The channel will also be available in standard-definition on Cablevision channels 149 and 400.

MLB Network recently announced the addition of the Ken Burns documentary “Baseball” to its launch programming.

  105. Tom from Worcester December 31st, 2008 at 10:57 am

Like, Drive 4-5, I live in the “nation” and she was not that bad. I think that she will a good job with whatever her role will be. She was able to give credit to other teams when they did well – even the Yankees. As for taking shots at A-Rod, even the New York Media does that so you really can’t judge her if she does that.

They definately played upon her looks though. Hopefully the new network will be able to cover all the teams equally and fairly as they say they will.

But of all the places to start, their first series is Great Red Sox moments? Let’s see, up until ’04 that would be like having a show on Great French Military Victories. They have won two in the last 90 years – and so have the Marlins for that matter. I guess it is cool that the first program they show is a the Perfecto, but the whole month on the Red Sox, I might get sick.

  106. randy l December 31st, 2008 at 11:00 am

didn’t hazel mae leave the red sox because she was developing a celebrity status with fans and wanted more money to reflect that when her contract was up ? red sox management let her go rather than pay what she wanted. that seems consistent with what they do with players. no surprise there.

i thought she was pretty good in the role she was in.

    Miggs -

Since I was one of the females on this blog who was discussing Hazel Mae, I feel the need to defend myself with regard to your careless comments above. First, I was not criticizing Hazel Mae nor have I ever criticized here any female commentator because of how she looked. I was trying to find out more about her since I’d never heard of her.

The discussion for me turned to how television is such a visual medium and whether you want to or not, and whether you like it or not, the way people look on television is important. I also stated that I think it is unfortunate for female sportscasters particularly that they always have to fight their looks whether they are pretty or not. It is not enough to be either one or the other – they really have to have it all. Not so much for men – example – John Kruk.

I don’t know how you can make a blanket statement that I and the other female posters here who commented on this subject are jealous or not good looking ourselves. It’s petty and pointless. And, as a matter of fact, I do not envy women in sports broadcasting at all – they have a very difficult path. No – I amend that statement – the only jealousy I have is that I didn’t choose it as a career path for myself!

  113. yanksrule57 December 31st, 2008 at 11:29 am

I think MLB network is a good idea and if I were with ESPN I would worry it would siphon viewers from my BBTN show.

Unlike the exceedingly greedy NFL owners, MLB seems to have had no problem getting their network carried on most cable systems.

I am happy that “hugging” Harold Reynolds is back with a high profile job. I’m not sure what really happend at ESPN and it is subject to a pending lawsuit, but he is a good analyst and not in any way a Yankee hater.

  114. Doreen December 31st, 2008 at 11:29 am

The latest on reupping Andy Pettitte.

    http://www.nydailynews.com/spo.....derek.html

PETT PROJECT: After signing Mark Teixeira, the Yankees began whispering that Andy Pettitte might have waited too long to accept their take-it-or-leave-it $10million offer, and that they might just decide to move on without him.

However, a person in regular contact with Yankee brass said Tuesday he believes the club still wants Pettitte back and believes a deal will get done, perhaps as early as next week.

According to this person, someone in the Yankee organization was putting out that word as something of a scare tactic, knowing that Pettitte badly wants to pitch for the Yankees next season. “They just want him at their price, that’s still the bottom line,” the person said.

***Pettitte earned $16million last season and apparently is reluctant to take a $6million cut. If he doesn’t come back, the Yankees will open the No. 5 starting job – behind CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Chien-Ming Wang and Joba Chamberlain – to competition among righties such as Phil Hughes and Alfredo Aceves***

    2) Did you hear that Time Warner is going to drop Viacom channels tomorrow because Viacom wants something? That means for TWC customers no comedy central, no nickelodeon, no MTV (okay, that’s a good thing…)

    3) The Jets may have (again) tanked it, but at least the Devils are worth watching.

  122. GreenBeret7 December 31st, 2008 at 12:25 pm

The Cubs are signing Aaron Miles to a 2 year. 4.9 mil. This may put Mark DeRosa on the block, which, coupled with the Jason Marquis trade may put the Jake Peavy deal back on.

Hopefully, NYY will sign Pettitte next week and finish up the team by making a move on a utility infielder like alex Cora.

For those trying to find information on the MLB Network and Comcast…got useful information on the third call to Comcast (New Haven County, CT).

It is only offered as part of the sports package that is 7.95 per month, so if you already have that then your good for tomorrow, starts at 6pm. As of now, the guy said it WILL NOT be included in the Digital Starter or Digital Classic packages..always the sports package.

I managed to get a free trial for a month out of him, will automatically start to charge the 7.95 after that unless I cancel. I have NO interest in any of the other sports so I may or may not keep it.

More info: currently NOT in HD, they will air 26 or 29 MLB games this season.

He said it will be on channel 170 or 268.

Hope this was useful information for someone out there. Also when you call, enter the menu choice for account changes, NOT customer sales-they were useless.

    Happy New Year!

Interesting article on Jeter, but he’s not going anywhere.

He can transition to left and then DH, ala Paul Molitor, for the remainder of his years in the bigs.

He’s too valuable as a presence on the team and could rack up near 3500 hits by the time all is said an done.

    Lifelong Yankee…a dying bread.

You are all over it, regarding Peavy. Marquis being moved plus DeRosa will enable the Cubs to get Peavy.

  132. Mr. Exceptional December 31st, 2008 at 12:53 pm

    vin,

I would guess his speed would remain fairly descent, probably better than most left fielders (Burrell, Ramirez, etc..).

He’s great with popups, that should transition nicely to the outfield.

It’s all a matter of his ego after that. Is he willing to move. I’ve never got a great feel for his thoughts on his future. He’s got to know he can’t play short forever.

  133. GreenBeret7 December 31st, 2008 at 12:54 pm

An added note to the Mark DeRosa situation….Milton Bradley is close to signing with the Cubs, so it appears that DeRosa will likely go to the Indians for 2-3 young pitchers, probably to be used in a deal for Peavy, maybe along with Felix Pie.

***Indians Close To Deal For DeRosa?
By Tim Dierkes [December 31 at 11:27am CST]
According to Bruce Levine of ESPN Radio, the Indians are getting close to a deal for Mark DeRosa that would send two or three young pitchers to the Cubs. At least, that statement was attributed to him in the station’s recent SportsCenter update. Levine recently scooped the Cubs’ signing of Aaron Miles***

***In his blog, Levine suggests a DeRosa match with Cleveland but does not say a deal is close. Levine considers the Cubs’ Milton Bradley signing “a done deal” and says they’ve back in the mix for Jake Peavy***

Once the Cubs unloaded Marquis for Luis Vizcaino and, they neared the Bradley signing, going for Peavy would be the next logical move. It will all hinge on the Cubs moving DeRosa somewhere….and, Cleveland has young pitchers.

Randy 1 – re: your 10:38 post (if you’re still around …. I’ve been avoiding shovelling snow while watching Attila the Hun terrorize the declining Roman Empire).

I couldn’t agree with you more. I think Cashman should give you one of their unsold suites in return for convincing them of the error of their ways. We concur that the Cashman organization can’t identify or develop young talent (and who needs position players?), but does know how to read the back of a baseball card.

If you and I had $440M and 1/2 hour access to SI.com, we could have engaged in the same brilliant scouting and roster-building accomplished by Cash Man this winter. I was hoping that he’d be too proud (and stupid) to go this route, but he must read your posts.

From a Yankee perspective, there is no need for a “plan.” Some posters have concocted the urgency of a 3 year window, running concurrent with CC’s optout and the shelf life of Posada, Jeter & Mariano. Hogwash. Now that the Yankees have made it clear that they’ll just buy all of the best availabe players, reloading is so easy, even a caveman can do it.

I join those Cape Codders in their stunned dismay over losing Teixeira. I really thought the Yankees would back off, for fear of the gluttony tag. I was SOOO wrong.

In fact, I still expect them to get Manny …. now that the price has dropped, they can rationalize it as a “good buy.”

P.S. Do you think that the Swisher acquisition was part of a plan (any plan)? Why get Swisher if he becomes a redundancy before any games are played? To answer my own question, Cashman intended to be Billy Beane for a day, and start Swisher, but then re-read your posts and came to his senses.

Hope you see this …. sorry for the late response. Always enjoy your comments … and a (relatively) Happy New Year to you and your’s.

    Angels Sign Brian Fuentes
By Tim Dierkes [December 31 at 12:46pm CST]
    12:46pm: Olney has the financials: it’s a two-year, $17.5MM deal. $8.5MM in ’09, $9MM in ’10, and a $9MM vesting option for ’11 based on games finished.

12:08pm: According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, Brian Fuentes signed a two-year deal with the Angels. A press release from the Angels is out; there’s a third-year club option. The Rockies will receive the Angels’ #33 pick in the June draft, as well as a supplemental pick.

Fuentes, 33, was excellent in 2008. He posted a 2.73 ERA and 11.78 K/9. At the outset of the offseason he was expected to get a three or even four-year deal.

    brian( red sox fan)-
damn, there’s a lot of snow out there. just finished shoveling about a foot of snow off the sidewalk in front of my business.everyone seems to be enjoying it though.

it’s always hard to beat someone at their game so cashman playing his own game is much better than trying to beat theo at theo’s game. he’s not totally inept though at developing young players as wang, cano , and joba illustrate. and theo is not totally inept at spending money as matsuzaka, drew , and lugo illustrate.

i think we both agree that cashman temporarily threw away the trump card he always had with the financial resources the yankees have by trying to go younger and cheaper. other’s on the blog ,like cb, have said that this spending after a lot of dead wood peeled away was always part of the cashman plan. i think the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. i really think cashman knew he ‘d be fired if the yankees didn’t make the playoffs foe a second straight year so he went for the kill. but the kids are still there, so i can see the other side’s opinion about the youth plan still being intact.

as far as swisher, i like the options that he gives girardi. injuries happen so flexibilty is important. the one vulnerability though the yankees could have is if too many innings is expected of sabathia, burnett, and joba. the yankees need a 5th starter who can throw some serious innings to make sure that all these other pitchers aren’t overworked.

the yankees and red sox both still have to worry about tampa bay next year. a good team likely is going to be squeezed out of the playoffs among the three. it should be a very competitive season right from the first pitch of the season. no team of the three will have the luxury of a bad start.

Peavy to the Cubs is lining up. As it looks, it will wait until a new Cubs owner is on line.

    ***DeRosa Traded To Indians
By Tim Dierkes [December 31 at 12:44pm CST]
12:44pm: Levine says the three minor league pitchers coming to Chicago for DeRosa are Jeff Stevens, Chris Archer, and John Gaub***

***A note from Bruce Miles: the Cubs’ ownership situation will have to be settled before the Cubs are able to complete a Peavy trade. Levine says the same in his post***

***12:25pm: Levine and Buster Olney are saying it’s a done deal – DeRosa to the Tribe for three minor league pitchers. The Cubs have trimmed roughly $9MM from the 2009 payroll with their recent moves. Coming in: $3.5MM for Luis Vizcaino (plus another million sent in salary relief) and $2.2MM for Aaron Miles. Going out: $5.5MM for DeRosa and $9.875MM for Jason Marquis***

***11:27am: According to Bruce Levine of ESPN Radio, the Indians are getting close to a deal for Mark DeRosa that would send two or three young pitchers to the Cubs.

I’d assume they are including at least one of the newly acquired minor leaguers in a deal for Peavy. That would give the Cubbies a FILTHY rotation. The proposed Bradley deal makes little sense to me – he only played 20 games in the field last year, and still couldn’t stay healthy. Better off getting a proven closer.

  201. vin December 31st, 2008 at 2:44 pm

Once Colorado took Marquis and his 10 mil salary for Luis Vizcaino, the rest of the deal falls into place. They send the three young pitchers and possibly Felix Pie (CF) along with somebody else…the deal will only need to wait on the OK of whomever the new Cubs owners are. It’ll be done by mid-January, I’d think.

Wang vs. Zombrano – Big Z is a headcase but has the talent to strike out 10 guys. Co ace vs. Co ace

Harden vs. AJ – Wow, can these guys get anymore similar? Both guys are probably 1 and 2 on the list of best stuff in the league but have been hampered with injuries.

Joba vs. Dempster – No contest, we should crush Dempster who is a flash in the pan. Joba can dominate any lineup

Pettitte vs. Lilly – Good matchup of veteran lefties. Both have pitched big games and in the AL.

Wow, that would be one hell of a series.

Wow. This is complete nonsense. Only someone who has never run any kind of organization could possibly believe a business worth $3B could possibly be run without a “plan.”

It’s astonishing how if the Sox had signed Teixeira it would have been completely due to the cunning management genius of the Theo, Henry and Lucchhino who patiently identified and waited out their prized target for 2 years and then rationally pounced.

As far as I’m concerned, the Sox are in Chicago and the Socks are in Bahhstin.

  223. rodg12 December 31st, 2008 at 4:53 pm

Vitters has to be included in any Cubs deal for Peavy from the Padres perspective, doesn’t he?? I’m thinking Vitters/Pie/two, maybe all 3 of the pitchers they got for DeRosa. That what you’re thinking GB?

The 4:33 post wasn’t me …. does this make me a “troll” being trolled?

CB – re: your 4:30 post. If the Sox had signed Teixeira, they’d be paired with the Yankees as Mega-gluttons within MLB; the national press would emphasize the advantages of deep pockets.

The point I am trying to make is the extraordinary discrepancy between the Yankee wealth and the other “fat cats” in MLB. For the past several years, the Yankees have had payroll costs 60% higher than their nearest rival (no longer the Sox, by the way).

That advantage ($70M) gives them a margin for error not available to other teams (this year, the equivalent of three Sabathias). I’m not saying that the Yankees aren’r a savvy business – from a revenue perspective. From an expenditure perspective, there’s little doubt but that Randy 1 and I, given $440M and 1/2 hour on SI.com, could have developed the same winter plan orchestrated by Cashman.

And if part of the plan was indeed to deliberately have a $21M obligation to a utility player (Swisher’s current role), then it proves my point.

New Year’s wishlist for the ol’ blog:

    1) Registration
    2) an Edit Button
    3) Numbers next to each post
    4) Some sort of indication that a new topic has been posted

Cash made improvements to the team, why can’t we follow suit? Any other suggestions?

  232. you gotta have faith (we are called the evil empire for a reason :) ) December 31st, 2008 at 6:04 pm

    Sabathia-3.48/2.51
    Wang-3.81
    Burnett-3.52
    Pettite-3.74
    Chamberlain-2.66

that rotation, if healthy, can kick major MLB butt, sign andy, the yank FO has already gone all in, why stop with an unfinished rotation?

  233. gianthinker December 31st, 2008 at 6:11 pm

This was just posted off of SI.com by Jon Heyman from the GM Winter Meetings:

    GM meetings: Yanks want Hudson
    By Jon Heyman

    Quote:
DANA POINT, Calif. — The Yankees are exploring a possible bid for free-agent second baseman Orlando Hudson, and are intrigued enough by Hudson’s talent and reputation as an excellent clubhouse influence to bat around the possibilities of trading talented young second baseman Robinson Cano or even signing Hudson with the idea of moving him to centerfield.

The Yankees’ interest in Hudson could incite a crosstown battle with the Mets, who are weighing the idea of Hudson replacing Luis Castillo at second base for them.

The Yankees are finding the centerfield markets barren, and that even includes the trade market, which has led general manager Brian Cashman to consider some unusual possibilities for the position. There are no free-agent center fielders the Yankees consider viable to start for them, and Cashman is said to be having trouble finding trade possibilities, as well. It’s believed the Yankees would have interest in the Dodgers’ Matt Kemp, the Royals’ David DeJesus or a few others, but no teams appear anxious to trade a young center fielder.

That has caused the Yankees to consider Hudson, who hit .305 with eight home runs for Arizona last season and is considered a great clubhouse guy and “high energy” player, to play center field. The other possibility, of course, would be to trade Cano, the ultra-talented player whose stock fell last year.

The Yankees’ first free-agent target is superstar pitcher CC Sabathia, but they are aiming to sign at least two high-end free-agent starters and will also consider A.J. Burnett (as soon as he opts out and becomes a free agent), Derek Lowe and perhaps Oliver Perez. Among position players, the Yankees are looking at Mark Teixeira and Manny Ramirez as well as Hudson.

Cano’s struggles have led the Yankees to consider hiring as a major-league coach infield instructor Mick Kelleher, who’s emerged as the leading candidate to replace fired third base coach Bobby Meacham. Kelleher, who has received high marks for his coaching in the minors, has the distinction of playing 11 seasons in the big leagues without ever hitting a home run.

The Yankees are still weighing how to utilize their coaches, and one possibility would be to make Kelleher the first base coach and move Tony Pena to third base. Kelleher is seen as a “Larry Bowa type.”
    ————————
Comments? Concerns? Opinions? Hudson to center? I personally think Hudson is one of the best 2B in baseball and he is an extremely nice guy. He’s great in the club house. This guy can play 2B/SS/CF. I’d be all for signing him to whatever deal he wants at this point to start at CF and when Jeter’s ready to move we’d already have his replacement. Thoughts?

Yeah…pretty close….not sure that it will be Vitters, but, I’m sure SD will ask for him, though.

  235. Tom December 31st, 2008 at 6:22 pm

It seems that the Cubs are clearing payroll, not so they can trade for Peavy, but so they can sign Milton Bradley.

  236. Brian (Red Sox Fan) December 31st, 2008 at 6:26 pm

Doreen ….. I’m not being interesting, I’m afraid. With the exception of my reply to CB (alluding to the Yankees’ $70M payroll advantage), none of the recent “Brian (Red Sox Fan” posts have come from me.

    happy new year everyone :)

  239. Tom December 31st, 2008 at 6:57 pm

It would be interesting to see how much of their total revenue the Yankees put back into the team payroll compared to the Red Sox.

I only say this because there was an article writen by Richard Justice that took the Astros owner to task for saying baseball needs a salery cap because the Yankees spend so much. However, the Astros put less then 50% of there baseball revenue back into the the payroll.

  240. rodg12 December 31st, 2008 at 7:08 pm

    Tom:

Looks like the Red Sox brought in 263 million in revenue in ’07. I’m guessing that number increased last season due to some extra seats added to Fenway and increased merchandise sales after winning the World Series. They did have a negative operating income in ’07 but it’s not enough to excuse the way they’ve cut payroll this year. Inexcusable to hear them calling “poor us.” Inexcusable.

Here’s the list from Forbes I used to get my numbers:

Theo wastes money taking a private plane on pointless recruiting trips to Texas while John Henry runs up his internet bill sending bitter emails.

Cashman, meanwhile, flies commercial into Oakland (the Bay Area’s budget airport) and saves money by having CC and AJ share a single press conference.

    That’s the difference.

  242. George January 1st, 2009 at 2:07 am

yay I got MLB Network in my SD cable and on my HD cable I got both SD and HD verisons of the channel on Time Warner.

But the HD verison of the channel isn’t working and redirects to the Golf channel but on the guide I have it listed as MLBHD

  243. teddy January 1st, 2009 at 7:48 pm

i got tw and mlb network isn’t working, i am cursed

  244. Beanietown January 1st, 2009 at 9:47 pm

Just finished watching Larsen’s perfect game on the new MLB Network. They showed the bleachers full of fans and that area that is always blacked out in dead centerfield was full of fans in white shirts with absolutely no black background for the batters.

They also showed the Dodgers using the shift against Mickey Mantle when he batted in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Very good look back at the so-called ‘good old days’.

Funny to see the catcher throwing the ball around the other infielders after a putout and the batters swinging two bats in their hands in the days before the weighted bat donuts. No DH and the pitchers did not stand in the ON DECK circle waiting to bat. They sat in the dugout.

  247. seo August 8th, 2014 at 4:34 pm

Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword….wait there’s even more Now what if i told you there was a simple WordPress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That’s right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin
