So long 2008, 2009 has to be better

Peter Abraham
December
31

I briefly considered writing some sort of sappy farewell to 2008 post. But 2008 was not much of a year to look back on for the Yankees.

The team finished in third place after a disjointed, injury-filled season. We bid farewell to Yankee Stadium and Bobby Murcer, who millions regarded as a friend whether they knew him or not, passed away.

There’s a lot of hope on the horizon: a better roster, a new ballpark and hopefully the familiar sound of Bob Sheppard announcing the lineup on April 16.

Thanks to everybody who reads and supports this blog. It is my great privilege to work for an audience that has so much knowledge and passion for their team. It has been great getting to know so many of you.

Here’s wishing a happy, healthy and productive 2009 to you and your family. Thanks again.

    Pete:

Happy New Year! I very much appreciate your blog and have checked in daily since I discovered you. Thanks for all your work keeping us informed. Good Luck to you and the Bombers in 2009. I am very much looking forward to this next year.

    Thanks to you, Peter.

All your work and community skills are appreciated. The firm hand on the tiller of a lifeboat filled with pinstriped fanatics. Before my prose gets any more purple, I’ll leave it at that.

I live in NYC, but am in Hong Kong for a short time. First place I look when I awake, though, is LoHud Yankee blog.

Happy New Year! I already celebrated.

Thanks Pete! Same to you and yours’. Rarely a day goes by without me reading your updates. Don’t know what I did before I discovered this, and it’s certainly more enjoyable to be a fan with all the info.

it was just an off year all around. no posada, no bob sheppard (having random p.a. guys and guys trying to copy sheppard). it’s a shame the old stadium went out in such a way. but i will say, i was at some of the last games vs. baltimore and it was an unbelievable feeling in the air. as jeter said, we’re bringing over all the fans and all the pride to the new place, so the feeling will remain the same. i have a feeling this will be a memorable season.

    Peter,

Thanks so much for your holiday wishes and for all your hard work throughout the year making this THE Yankees site. It is particularly great for those of us who live in the diaspora, far away from NY. Reading your blog makes you feel at home!

Best wishes to you and all your readers for a healthy, happy 2009.

Happy new year, Pete. And thanks a lot for your outstanding job.

I can define my passion for the Yankees as BP and AP (Before Pete and After Pete).

The number of visitors and readers over here can not be a simple coincidence. The only reason is that you’re the best. The one and only Pete Abraham.

  25. Gus G.

Hooray for the Yankees! until then, Twilight Zone marathon on Sci-fi! Weeeeeeeeeee!

  26. Scott

    Pete,

Thanks for the great blog! 2008 was a memorable year because of your efforts, and we are looking forward to more of the same in 2009 as the Yankees drive for the elusive 27th crown! But the stars are aligned to make it happen this coming year…new stadium, true ace leading the staff, and defense at first, and oh yeah, your tremendous blogs!

    Scott

  27. Jorge (México)

Happy new year, Pete. And thanks a lot for your outstanding job.

To me, my passion for the Yankees is now defined as BP and AP (Before Pete and After Pete).

The number of visitors and readers over here can not be just a coincidence. It is because you are the best. By far.

The one and only ….. PETE ABRAHAM

  28. Justin

You’re a good writer. You have a great sense of detail and you know your baseball, meaning you know what to look for and know how to make things come across. I enjoy this blog very much. As a longtime Yankee fan, I look forward to more of your common sense in 2009. Thanks and Happy New Year!

And this is the year that Melky Cabrera bats .400! I just know it!

  29. Tim

Thanks, Pete – you’ve become an indispensable part of my day. Can’t wit until opening day!

  30. Joe from Long Island

And Pete, thanks for all you do, especially for keeping those of us who are Yankee fans in exile up to date and well-informed.

Did you find out the scoop re the MLB Network on Time Warner at work today?

    Happy New Year, Pete.

    from previous thread:

Theo wastes money taking a private plane on pointless recruiting trips to Texas while John Henry runs up his internet bill sending bitter emails.

Cashman, meanwhile, flies commercial into Oakland (the Bay Area’s budget airport) and saves money by having CC and AJ share a single press conference.

    That’s the difference.

    from this thread only:

I think 2009 will be better for the Yankees, but it doesn’t have to be. Things can always be worse. But I CC good things for us all.

  36. Doreen

I would like to wish all of you a happy and healthy 2009!

And to all of you punsters – I’ve been out and about and just caught up with some of the later posts in the last thread. I am impressed with how long you all were able to draw out the bread/grain references. Good work!

I rarely post, but always read- daily, at least. I’m just one more exiled die-hard (Michigan) who relies on you for my Yankee fix, and younever let me down. Thanks for your honesty, your dedication to the blog and for mixing in just enough fun, social commentary and random observations to keep things interesting.
A great year to you and yours.

Pete, wishing you a Springsteen show at the new stadium with Diane Lane on your arm this year. Oh, and a championship to write about as well. 8)

  72. i am the walrus

Thank you Peter for providing us Yankee fans and even some fans of other ballclubs the opportunities to rant, vent, and comment. While sometimes you bring views that many don’t agree with, it is all a part of what makes this such a great site. You help fuel debate, which makes it fun.

Wishing one and all a very happy and healthy New Year… with of course a Yankee championship to celebrate.

I hope 2009 brings this blog less puns and less trolls. (but not necessarily in that order!)

I enjoy the insight from many bright posters here, and even enjoy the laughs from reading some of those far flung rumors.

You mean we can’t get Pujols if we throw in Melky, Kennedy AND Igawa! But wait… listen to THIS possible lineup.

Same to you and yours, Pete. Thanks for your blog (and I like the puns, by the way!). The people who read and post on this blog are always insightful and constantly entertaining…we owe it all to you for bringing this group together.

You do a great job Pete.

From the Santana sweepstakes, The ARod soap opera, through the ups and downs and further downs of the season to the ultimate free agent frenzy of CC, AJ and Tex I must have checked this site a thousand times.

I don’t expect you to be unbiased, or even share my viewpoint. But you consistantly hit the mark, and discuss what fans like me are all obsessing over. Keep it up and have a happy 09!

Happy New Year Everyone! Thanks Pete you are my HERO.
