Yankees to conduct clinic in Taiwan

This release from the Yankees:

The New York Yankees announced today they will join the Chinese Taipei Baseball Association under the auspices of Major League Baseball in holding a clinic for high school pitchers, catchers and coaches at National Taiwan Sport University’s Taoyuan Campus in Taipei, Taiwan from January 7-11.

As the Yankees’ first-ever large-scale outreach in Taiwan, the clinic represents the latest Yankees-led initiative in cultivating baseball talent and increasing brand recognition in Asia and the greater international community.

“This clinic serves as another step in the outreach and integration of baseball throughout the international community,” said Yankees President Randy Levine. “The Yankees organization is recognized around the world, and we are confident this important event will leave a positive imprint on our countless fans in Taiwan.”

Led by five members of the Yankees’ player development staff in Tampa, Fla., the five-day clinic will focus on pitching and catching fundamentals and philosophy. Yankees representatives will include special assistant Pat McMahon, extended spring training pitching coach Carlos Chantres, assistant director of baseball operations Eric Schmitt, catching coordinator Julio Mosquera and srength and conditioning coordinator Mike Wickland. Taiwanese participants include 40 pitchers, 10 catchers and 20 coaches, all from the high school level.

“Taiwan has given the Yankees one of its brightest stars in Chien-Ming Wang,” said Yankees Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Cashman. “We hope that this clinic demonstrates our deep respect and appreciation for a place that has given us such a talented player.”

The Chinese Taipei Baseball Association oversees all amateur baseball in Taiwan and organizes their Olympic and World Baseball Classic teams. Their interest in working with the Yankees is natural given the club’s huge following in Taiwan, which is largely due to the success of Wang, a two-time 19-game winner and Tainan, Taiwan native.

    Talk about globalization…

I would love to read or learn somewhere the financials involved in the Yankees’ worldwide effort. I wouldn’t think it all goes to MLB-licensed products, with proceeds distributed to all 30 ML teams.

Yeah, but wasn’t it great to have the Hot Stove show (before they started with the Red Sox replay). I’m liking this MLB Network.

We need to scout Taiwan more for talent.

Wang gives us so much publicity, why haven’t we signed him yet?

  14. Al from BK January 2nd, 2009 at 8:49 pm

Yanks broadening their prospects range I like this. Supposedly baseball in China/Taiwan is decades behing the NPB and Japan but with our help perhaps they will develop the sport more. They did produce Wang so the young players do have some hope.

  15. Um.. January 2nd, 2009 at 8:54 pm

Anyone read that article about Wang in SI last year?

I think I remember Bill Simmons saying that Wang seemed like a serial killer or something and I never got around to read myself.

    Just wondering.

I’m loosing my patience with Cano in the same way I am with Hughes.

    Hughes’ latest “Change Up Report”…

“Blah blah blah blah he’s young, he found increased velocity nearly approached the 95mph he USED to throw in HIGH SCHOOL blah blah He was rushed, blah blah some pitchers take 5 yrs or longer to mature blah blah blah The 06 playoff performance where he dominated a team that he owned OWNED!!!! ALL SEASON !!!!

GO AHEAD AND LOOK A PHIL’S ERA VS CLEVELAND FOR THAT SEASON STATBOYS LOL!!

Blah blah blah, His eye sight…

    Blah blah blah…

Yanks stun the world of opthamology when they bought not HIRED…. NO LITERALLY BOUGHT AN EYEDOCTOR WHOSE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY WILL BE TO TRAVEL WITH AND PROVIDE Young PHILip THE 24 HOUR CARE THAT ONLY A YOUNG MAN WITH HIS rare DISABILITIES really needs so that he may overcome his unbelievable misfortune.

    Blah blah blah

Change ups are more difficult for males from the South Western California Valleys yada yada

    BLAH BLAH

Cano was an All Star his rookie year!!! Blah blah yada blah…

Cano is the next Rod CAREW HAHHAHAHAHA

    AND BLAH BLAH BLAH

    MY FAVORITE!!

    FUTURE BATTING CHAMPION.

All i’m saying is I like both players but Phil not receiving glorious accolades for his recent addition of a solid ML ready 3rd pitch WHEN I CAN GO TO MY COUSINS BABE RUTH GAME AND WATCH 14 yr olds in the middle of their pubescent growth command and throw 3 to 5 pitches FOR STRIKES …..Oooh I need to go to the bar early tonight LOL

    Anyway.

Between that and Robbie’s inability to remember the difference between a pitch that is 2 feet into the dirt 2 feet over his head 2 feet outside and in the dirt and outside/inside before crossing the plate!!!

I’m sorry a guy with his talent should be lighting up the winter leagues in the same way the eyes of NFL secondaries do when BRETT FAVRE is dropping back to throw an out pattern when his team desperately needs to score or go home.

Cano should be able to work on all he needed to work on and still put up numbers that are at least respectable..

    Riddle me this Viper/Gary…

At what level would the fall or winter leagues be based upon for fair comparison?

For instance would it be fair to say that if hypothetically CC or Texiera or Alex or Derek were to indulge my question they would be essentially embarrassing a…

    1. High School Varsity
    2. Ivy League Varsity
    3. Division 1 College Varsity
    4. Single A Team
    5. Double A
    6. AAA ??

    ???

No Cano is not obligated nor do i expect him to put up the numbers that those veteran established players would put up against such a sad laughing stock i assume it would be for them having to “compete” on such inferior levels…BUT WOULD YOU NOT ASSUME THAT ROBBIE SHOULD BE ABLE TA KINDA HANDLE IT BY NOW WHAT WITH YA KNOW THOSE THREE YEARS HE’S ALREADY BOOKED WITH THE BEST PLAYERS AT ANY LEVEL??

    No?

Maybe I’m wrong or naive or both.

Wont be the first or last time.

    To clarify for legal reasons…

Pubescent Growth = “Awkward Stage” aka pimples feet still too big for their bodies growth plates still not sealed etc…

“…at National Taiwan Sport University’s Taoyuan Campus in Taipei, Taiwan from January 7-11.”

Is the Taoyuan Campus in Taoyuan or is it in Taipei? Is this like Los Angeles of Anaheim?

Taoyuan is about 45 minutes outside of Taipei, it’s where the international airport is. When I was an English teacher in Taiwan I taught a couple classes there (the rest in Chung-Li, where I lived).

For the few of you who might not have seen it, here is my little photo-journalistic essay on Yankee fans in Taiwan during the 2007 playoffs:

    Well good thank you AG.

I was beginning to feel like i was insane what with all this spending and incredible upgrades our beloved team has made in earnest to improve the roster.

I rejoice as many of Yankee fans do when I look at what the Stein boys have done for us.

I just think it’s really a wonderful thing IF

IF the operative- IF HUGHES BEGINS TO GET HIS ACT TOGETHER.

He doesn’t need to throw AJ’s fastball or Joba’s slider or Joba’s Fastball or CC’s fastball or CC’s slider, or Kennedy’s change up LOL

    Seriously though

I can’t go to a little league game where a kid on at least on of the teams throws 3 to 4 pitches for strikes from the time they’re like 13 yrs old.

It’s amazing to me that a kid with his minor league and amateur prestige accolades etc came to the pro’s with 2 pitches.

It literally keeps me up at night I’m ashamed but it’s true.

Anybody think we should buy low on Andruw Jones for a year? He might bounce back and have one of his typical years .250/30/95 and he can still play CF.

I don’t know if Andruw Jones can play CF anymore. He missed most of last season with knee injuries, plus, he is, or was, out of shape.

Does anyone have any thoughts on Ken Burns’ Baseball? I’m purchasing the DVD tomorrow – it’s a ton of $$$, but I really want it on DVD (that’s why I’m not going to tape it off of the MLB network – I’d have to use too many tapes), plus the extras look good.

Does Ken Burns do the subject justice? I loved Burns’ Civil War (and one of these days, I will buy his doc on WWII)…..and I am beyond fascinated with baseball history. Did you love it? Think it was so-so?

I would really love to hear your thoughts on this…….thanks!

Also, did anyone catch the specials on MLB network today (Inside the Moments, I think – about HRs, Mound Magic, Fall Classics and one other one)? If so, how were they ? I taped them to watch over the weekened – unfortunately, lol, I think the screen blacked out at some point, so I probably missed a good chunk (they will be repeated in the next week or two, though). I am really excited about the special shows that the network is putting together. As a lover of baseball history, I can’t get enough of this stuff. I’d like to put in a plug for the HOF – I could spend a year there. Undoubtedly it’s one of my favorite places on earth.

  30. YankeeRay January 2nd, 2009 at 9:59 pm

Only if we sign Jones to a minor league deal, then we have very little to lose. If we are truly going to go into the season wuh Melk/Gard, then Druw would be worth the flier.

Betsy, Ken Burnss’ baseball is wort very penny, though MLBTV is going to run th entire series plus oter inteviews, one episode a week. is series on the Civil War and Jazz are unbelievbly great, also.

I think this is a good idea and I would let Wang know that after his Yankee baseball career, he might be suited to be the Yankee “figure head” for Taiwan/NYY Operations.

GB, yes KB’s documentaries are great BUT I think he drank too deeply of the Marsalis Kool-Aid in preparing the Jazz one, resulting in serious oversimplification …but don’t let’s get off on music, Pete will wake up and drag in that clown…

Still was some great listening, though. If Ken Burns developed it, I’ll watch it.

I really enjoyed tonight’s Hot Stove show – there was a lot of good content. The guys summarized the free agent situation very nicely, I thought, and segued into a piece on the best free agent signings ever (Reggie, Andre Dawson, Greg Maddux). Heyman was on, then a round table discussion on “how do players know when it’s time to retire”. I thought the ex-players really gave pretty good insight – Larkin said that when he was older, he didn’t have 100% focus on the game at all times. He did when he was in the field or at bat, but when he was younger, that focus was there all the time. I liked the preview of the AL West – they spent a couple of minutes on each team. Near the end, Leiter explained why he thought AJ will have a major impact this year. It was mostly nothing we haven’t heard before, but I liked Al’s comment in particular about some pitchers who are ultra-talented, but lacking a strong record…..they look at their record (12, 11, 14, wins) and they have to ask themselves “what is this?” Some guys find themselves a little later than others….Larkin agreed with Al that it came down to AJ not giving max-effort all the time. He remembered seeing AJ as a Marlin looking up to check how fast the FB he just threw was clocked at and then trying to throw one even harder………Really good stuff tonight.

  37. Betsy January 2nd, 2009 at 11:09 pm

GB, I’m going to tape the new Ken Burns interviews. If I knew how to record on a DVR, I would, but alas…….. and the tapes just take up too much room (plus the constant rewinding and fast-forwarding I would put them through would ruin them). I can’t wait for this series to begin airing…..I haven’t seen the Jazz yet. I think my next Burns seris will be the War, though. I really want to see that.

  38. Joey's Poodle January 2nd, 2009 at 11:18 pm

Agreed on the great listening, GB.

Ever since his Civil War series I’ve tried not to miss KB’s work. Not sure he’s ever outdone it, though my interest in jazz made that one special for me.

  39. Al from BK January 2nd, 2009 at 11:33 pm

Betsy- Sounds like an interesting take o AJ. Some guys don’t want it until later in their career. Perhaps A.J. is finally in the “wanting it” stage.

  40. joeman January 2nd, 2009 at 11:55 pm

if the Dodgers cut A Jones loose the Yankees should take a chance on him…depending on the $$$ & years…at 31 and getting himself in shape he could be a nice CFer

  41. Bo knows January 3rd, 2009 at 1:30 am

The Yankees need to grow some of their own kids instead of taking someone else’s mistakes. Boston has a payroll of 100 mil, we are at 200. And we’re at best neck and neck with Boston. That’s if our old men stay healthy for a year and Cano and Swisher come back a little. Too many variables for my liking. We need some trade chips and all we have are relievers and AAA pitchers. Not worth much. Tampa traded a starting pitcher for a OF. We don’t have any to trade. Maybe we can showcase Aceves as a long man this year.
