Mark Teixeira, a Yankee for two weeks, officially dons the pinstripes tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the old Stadium.
At what point do you expect Manny Ramirez to charge into the room and try and steal the jersey away? The Yankees should hire extra security.

I always miss these thanks to work =(
It depends. How badly does Manny want the job?
I’ll “DVR” it
But if only the Yankees would sign him. To dream of getting another oh so delicious week of phony sports reporter outrage and teeth gnashing.
Hope a reporter doesn’t throw a shoe at Teixeria when he is at the podium.
Cool can’t wait !
What Yankees will be in attendance for the presser? Will the Captain help the future Captain put on the pinstripes?
What number is Tex going to wear?
Probably 7
Uh, 7 is kind of retired…
The question is, at what point does Giambi bust through the door and try to steal the jersey away?
Yeah, 7. That or 3.
LOL LOL
Hmm, I was hoping for 8, but i’d give him 2 if he really really asks nicely!!
I think i read that he will be taking 25, since 23 is unofficially “retired”.
Might as well give him 23
you official giambi jersey owners, hope you like your new Mark Teixeira jersey!
nice, finally
How bout the prestigious #45, worn by such greats as Chili Davis and Carl Pavano?
i gues hell wear 25. didnt he wear 25 for the angels?
Memo from Latroy Hawkins: Don’t pick # 21.
25 most likely
“think i read that he will be taking 25, since 23 is unofficially “retired”.”

I have a #25 batting practice jersey. It has a name on the back though. I’ll have to look and see how difficult it would be to remove the name. (it might ruin it).
Just write the number “Tex”
180?
how about 23A
never own a name on back yankee jersey!
Shall we put odds on it?
2:1 25
40:1 45
100:1 73 or 37…
I cant wait to see this tomorrow. I think he will take 25, i hope he talks about his idol Don Mattingly and also about the Red Sox and how he doesn’t like them.
Destro:
I think my 42 Rivera shirt is okay…I mean…really…
Rebecca, what is your Master’s Thesis topic?
“I have a #25 batting practice jersey. It has a name on the back though. I’ll have to look and see how difficult it would be to remove the name. (it might ruin it).”
I’ve got bad news for you. The name on the back already ruined it!
The Yanks are not getting Mark Teixeira. You people need to be more realistic:)
Tom: Women and work in later medieval Nottingham.
No, the choice was not up to me. According to my adviser I don’t actually have to, y’know, _like_ my thesis topic…
Hot Stove has officially been re-started. Plenty of good FAs still available
If they can swing these…the Yanks should trade Nady and Kennedy to the Giants for Aaron Rowand (as per Sweeny Murti), and Matsui and Igawa to Seattle for Erik Bedard. Then you can sign Manny for DH, and he won’t have to steal Tex’s jersey.
Looking forward to the introduction tomorrow.
Trade for Coco Crisp for CF
Mark- I know but I couldn’t afford a real jersey with no name.
I would never have bought it with the name if I could.
Later I became friends iwth someone who put a number on a blank jersey for me.
“No, the choice was not up to me. According to my adviser I don’t actually have to, y’know, like my thesis topic… ”
That’s absurd! Even in undergrad classes I could pick the topic for most papers or final projects.
During the weekend, thinking about CC and Burnett, I suddenly realized I’d forgotten all about Tex for a week. The smile on my face was HUGE I tell ya. I STILL can’t get over it–Tex is a YANKEE!!!!
GB7, (going back to earlier today), I hope I’m not wearing out everyone’s patience with the Horace Clarke stuff, but the following is a bit of interesting information I rounded up on him on the Web.
To start with, I was wrong. Clarke broke up THREE no hitters in the bottom of the ninth in the same month! That must be a record!
The following is from Wikipedia:
“In the space of one month in 1970, he broke up three possible no-hitters in the ninth inning (Jim Rooker on June 4, Sonny Siebert on June 19 and Joe Niekro on July 2.)”
And the rest is from assorted sites:
“Years later, The Major (Ralph Houk) remarked, “I know I got a lot of criticism for playing Horace Clarke as much as I did, but he was a lot better ballplayer than anyone gave him credit for. He did a lot of things good but nothing great, and that was his problem. . .besides, I didn’t have anyone else.”
Horace made a similar comment in 1999. “I was just one little infielder, one of 25 guys, not any Superman.” But he added, “After all the negative ink, after I got out of the game, I said, ?Let me see what my accomplishments were.’” In retrospect, he regards himself as an underrated defensive player.
There was one big knock on him in the field, though. It wasn’t so much that he wore his helmet—he would not turn the double play with runners barreling in. Nobody ever took out Horace with a slide, but he held the ball after leaping. Several members of the sinkerballing Yankees staff, “who lived and died on ground balls. . .confronted their teammate. ?It was a sore subject with him,’ says [reliever Jack] Aker, ‘and he became upset.’” The late New York sportswriter Dick Young, curmudgeon par excellence, also took Horace to task for this shortcoming in his usual brusque manner.”
“One of my co-workers is an old-time Yankee fan, and he never misses an opportunity to knock Horace Clarke. So I compared him to Bobby Richardson:
BR: 251/280/330, 78 OPS+ in 5386 AB; .979 FPct, 4.91 Range
HC: 256/308/313, 82 OPS+ in 4813 AB; .983, 5.32
I was shocked to discover this, and I promptly informed my co-worker than Clarke was slightly better than Richardson, both offensively and defensively. He laughed as if I’d said the earth was flat, insisting Bobby was much better than Horace, stats be damned.
Of course, Richardson had three rings and played in seven ASGs, while while Clarke had none and none, respectively. Secret to success: get better teammates… Clarke had none and none, respectively. Secret to success: get better teammates…
Rebecca, Yeah, Masters Thesis “projects”, as my MA advisor called them, are dumb. 3 chapters of semi-original tedium that bored the devil out of me.
I wonder if they’ll do a join press conference with Kevin Cash like they did with the CC/AJ conference. That’d be a hoot.
Agree about not having names on the back of jersey’s. Saw a guy at the stadium last year with a pinstriped “Mantle” #7 jersey. Ok, first, what Yankee fan doesn’t know that the team never uses names on the back of uniforms? So knowing this, what would make you want to buy a jersey with a name on the back? I deduce from this that those wearing these are bandwagon or casual fans.
Very un-cool IMO.
What I don’t get is people who put their own names on the back of jerseys.
yanksrule57
Maybe people can’t afford the official jersey price?
yeah, Eric Bedard makes a lot of sense.
A guy recovering from labrum surgery, who can’t pitch until June, and is one of most miserable human beings in the game.
He also hates playing in NY and has said so publicly.
Aaron Rowand? Sure, why not take on another bad contract for a fading player.
How ’bout this novel suggestion? How ’bout they just sign Pettitte and go into the season with some depth and roster flexibility for a change?
Because in their fantasy lives, they were a member of the Yankee organization.
Kinda nullifies the authenticity aspect of the jersey, but hey, each to their own right?
Jennifer,
ok I’ll buy that to an extent. I didn’t want to pay the price for a numbered jersey so I bought a plain pinstriped one for less than half the price. I think it cost me $39 vice $100 for a numbered one.
Patrick, the conversation went like this:
Her: So what do you want to do?
Me: the Black Death!
Her: Well, what about the black death?
Me: Well…uh…health, consequences…that sort of thing./
Her: It’s been done before. Are you interested in women?
Me: Uh, a little…I guess… kind of how they could wield power behind the scenes…
Her: So you mean like women and work?
Me: Not qui–
Her: And towns or countryside?
Me: Uh…towns?
Her: Nottingham’s got really good borough records.
Me: Uh…okay?
And thus a thesis is born…
Rays close to signing Burrell
MLBTR
Authentic jersey’s run in the $100+ range. I myself, cannot afford one so I can see why someone would get a knockoff. Even so, I’d still try the knockoff without the names to at least give off the impression that I got an authentic jersey…
jenn: It’s a cool birthday gift for a kid, but I don’t get the adults that do it, unless it’s for charity or something.
Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Rays are close to signing Pat Burrell to a two year $16M deal.
If true that’s a terrific signing for the Rays. Burrell in the outfield is awful but as primarily a DH he’ll help them alot.
Adding Matt Joyce and Burrell will upgrade their offense quite a bit. The AL East keeps getting better.
It’s remarkable to think of how far the corner outfield market has fallen. 2 year/16M for Burrell. I’m sure at the middle of last season he was hoping for around 14-$16M per year on a 4 year deal. Now he’ll be getting what he once may have hoped for as a single season salary as a two year salary.
The yankee’s decision not to offer Abreu arbitration looks better and better. Abreu would have gotten more in arbitration to play one year than Burrell – a better hitter now and much younger – is going to get over two years.
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/s.....l?MSNHPHMA
I wonder if the Yanks will indeed trade Matsui and then get back into the cheap DH market.
i boutght an authentic a-rod jersey for 130 and that was on sale supposedly
Ok, now that Abreu’s stock has fallen, lets go get him for a one or two year deal at 10/M a year. He is solid and him/A-Rod/Tex etc, would be better than Nady, i dont care if he is younger.
Wow.
I leave for a while away from the blog and with all that has happened with free agency, I must say the whole Sam I Am debacle is the most amazing thing ever.
Seriously, going through the blog reading the comments, then going to his blog I havent laughed this hard in a while.
I love my people. (Yankee fans)
2/16? corner OFers will be selling pencils and apples on the street /s
Note to all, the Yankees are NOT trading Matsui, and dont need to. It doesnt hurt to have too many players. In 1998, we had Strawberry on the bench. Matsui is clutch when healthy, so DHing and PHing will be good for him and us. He will put up something like .285, 16hr/70rbi.
Now lets continue to guess Tex’s number. He can go with #99. That hasnt been done to the best of my knowledge.
“I wonder if the Yanks will indeed trade Matsui and then get back into the cheap DH market.”
My initial reaction to the Burrell deal was similar.
I don’t think this is going to happen. The Burrell deal speaks to how impossible it will be to trade Matsui in anything but a pure salary dump – which makes no sense. It also speaks to how little Nady would bring back in a trade.
But at this point with the holes that the yankees have opening up next year in the outfield and DH it almost makes sense for them to sign another player this year for a few reasons.
Next year outside of Bay and Holliday there aren’t many good hitters.
If the yankees sign another type A hitter this year all they will lose is the equivalent of a fourth round draft pick. They do this next year and they lose a first or at least second round pick.
I guess what came to mind is how much would it take to sign Adam Dunn to be the future DH?
Dunn isn’t going to get much more than Burrell did. And he’s signing after so now the Rays are out of the market as well.
Again – I don’t see this happenning but right now the values on DH/bad fielding corner outfield guys are very attractive.
Someone had 99 this year I believe I want to say Aceves as he was a Gretzky fan maybe
What’s up guys. I just started a new Yanks blog – a few posts are up – it’s called Mystique and Aura.
Any feedback would be appreciated – thanks!
http://nyymystique.blogspot.com/
Wonder where Abreu will land.. and for how much.
lol y the hell would teixeira want a number like that
AA wore 91
Why would he want to wear the number vacated by Jason Giambi?
Why would he want to wear the number vacated by Jason Giambi?
Pat going to Tampa effectively removes them from them from Abreu which I heard was a possibility. Bobby must be kicking himself right about now as there doesnt seem to be a team for him and certainly not at the value of his last contract
Thanks Tex I knew he had a 90’s number just wasnt sure what the second digit was
I would really rather avoid the wall fearing OF that is Abreu for another year. Cash should stick to upgrading the defense as he has all off season. If Dunn comes, then someone must go… in the current market climate, I don’t see how it could be anything but eating salary at this point.
As for the whole name-on-the-jersey issue, I don’t have a problem with it. I used to wear an old Mickey Mantle jersey, but do to its fragile condition I decided to retire it. I received a Jeter jersey with his name on the back for this Christmas and I have no worries about it. Why would anyone think I am less of a fan because my family decided against spending $130 for a jersey? And anyway, out in the bleachers, having Chili Davis’s name on the back of a #45 could keep your head beer free when the “Pavano Sucks” chant starts…
“Someone had 99 this year I believe I want to say Aceves as he was a Gretzky fan maybe”
correction: Aceves wore 91 because of Dennis Rodman.
This outfield market is really going to help the Giants and the Dodgers.
If Burrell signs for 2/16 Manny will have to take notice. The dodgers leverage just seems to grow as time goes on.
The Giants have a strange team – they have a lot of minor league talent and very good young pitching. They have no hitting but given how bad that division is they seem to be trying to win while rebuilding by taking advantage of the depressed free agent market.
Abreu or Dunn would be very good fits in San Francisco.
I find it hard to believe that the Angels won’t get another bat given the market conditions. Mike Scioscia is a very good manager but I wonder if his need for a very particular kind of player isn’t going to wind up hurting the angels.
The Angels could really use Adam Dunn – just stick him at 1b and see what happens.
Yanks just need a #4 SP innings eater – Pettite – and a backup SS/2B slick fielder. Forget the corner OFers out there now, even on a cheap deal. Next year Matsui and his 13 mil is gone. Nady and his 6 mil or so is gone. That’s 20 mil freed up for Holliday. If Johnny is still performing at a high level then resign him for 2y at 9 mil a year (down from 13 mil this year). Assuming Austin Jackson is ready you will get an OF of Damon/Holliday, Jackson, Swisher. DH can be manned by whoever needs a rest between Posada and the OFers.
Patrick: with all the theses written on the same topics, I can see why advisors might “officially suggest” a topic for a thesis.
Milady’s medieval doctoral thesis was a material feminist’s interpretation of Chaucer’s Wife of Bath.
“Why would anyone think I am less of a fan because my family decided against spending $130 for a jersey? ”
$130? The authentic jersey’s I’ve seen start at $180. Too rich for my blood. That being said, I too am one of those fanatical fans who don’t believe in wearing Yankee Jerseys with names on the back. If the team doesn’t do it, why should we? Besides, I don’t need the world to know that Jeter’s number is #2. If they don’t know that already, they aren’t real baseball fans anyway so who cares what they think.
Does anyone have any word on whether or not Pettitte is going to sign and/or how long the Yanks are going to keep this offer on the table? At some point, I think they’d have to move forward on the 5th spot in the rotation wouldn’t they? They wouldn’t wait until pitchers and catchers to report to make a decision would they? Even for Pettitte that’s too long IMO.
CB, I agree that the Angles need another bat. As it stands right they are a really weak OBP team.
They have taken a step back this offseason. Plus, when one considers that their Pythagorean W-L record was only 88-74, you get a sense that they might not be all that good next season.
They do play in a weak division though…
Abreu most likely ends up with as a Cub or Dodger.
“Even for Pettitte that’s too long IMO.”
You know I’ve been behind Andy on this thing from the beginning, but even I think he’s taking too long. I say he’s got ’til the end of the week then we just have to move on.
“Abreu most likely ends up with as a Cub or Dodger.”
Not sure about the Cubs. I think they have their hearts set on Monopoly’s own Milton Bradley.
“having Chili Davis’s name on the back of a #45 could keep your head beer free when the “Pavano Sucks” chant starts…”
If you have a no. 45 jersey, it better have Davis on the back of it. I would think that is the exception.
Nobody thinks that you are less of a fan with a name on the back, at least I don’t. It is just kind of like the pink Yankee caps, or the blackout caps. It just isn’t the way it should be. It’s ok for other teams, but not the Yankees.
And, jennifer, I apologize. I re-read your post and saw that it is a batting practice jersey. I would think that the players name on that is ok, but never on the gameday jerseys.
I think Tex should wear #6, another low number to retire and if we have to do a double ceremony for him and Torre down the road so be it. If Torre doesn’t respond and come around then it will be Tex only.
As far as the earlier thread on the 60’s teams, here is one for the ages. Do you remenber the great board game Challenge the Yankees?
My first great sports game memory which was followed by Stratamatic baseball.
http://keymancollectibles.com/.....ankees.htm
CB, I’m not familiar with Matt Joyce – what can you tell me about him?
I was not one of those who pooh-poohed the Rays – they are a team with serious talent to be taken seriously – before they signed Burrell. The thing that makes this division really outstanding….and brutal…is that the teams are well-run and have bright futures. Each team has good young pitching, for one – the most important thing. The Yankees are behind with regards to position players in the minors, but they are apparently loaded (CB or SJ44 – are these kids, if you can tell at this point, real major league prospects?) in the lower minors. In a few years, we may see a couple of these kids stick. This is not a division for wimps – and none of the teams like each other, lol. There is bad blood between the Rays and Sox, the Rays and Yankees, the Sox and Yanks…. It’s a shame that one, maybe two, teams will be shut out come playoff time. The 2nd place team won’t have as good a record as perhaps another team in a weaker division because these beasts will be beating each other up……
Pete, are you covering the press conference for the paper?
What is Matt Nokes up to these days?
I’m so excited about the press conference tomorrow! This whole thing has been absolutely surreal – I still can not believe that Tex is in pinstripes (even though I had serious reservations about the length of the contract, I can’t help but be excited).
I don’t care how “bland” he may be to the media – he’s apparently a good guy and, IMO, that’s more important than being colorful. I wonder if he’ll divulge how this whole deal went down……
When you talk about FA OUtfielders in 2010, remember Carl Crawford. Damon/Jackson/Crawford?
Crawford is not a FA after the season. He has an option that the Rays will probably pick up.
No way Damon is in the outfield in 2010!
Oh cool. I will be at a job interview(ugh). I’ll probably just catch the PC online or on ESPN. I think Tex will wear #25 just slide him into Giambi’s old threads
Yanks61, that’s what I was saying earlier…Clarke and Roy White were terribly under rated as players. People who knock Clarke about double plays seem to forget who he had at shortstop and third base. They were terrible. Tommy Tresh, Gene Michael and Ruben Amaro are the only ones that played more than 100 games with Clarke, and Tresh was a left fielder with bad knees playing shortstop.
Give Damon a little credit, he is fine in LF and he can still hit and run.
“I’m not familiar with Matt Joyce – what can you tell me about him?”
Betsy,
One of the Rays biggest weaknesses last year was that they were simply awful against left handed pitching. Very bad.
That’s a problem when you’re trying to compete against the Sox who have Lester and Okajima out of the pen and the yankees have CC and hopefully Pettite then Marte and Coke out of the pen.
The moves they are making are systematically designed to address they’re general need for more hitting and their specific need for more hitting against left handers.
Joyce is a nice player – 23 year old rookie RF with Detroit last year. He isn’t great and doesn’t have a high ceiling but he had a good debut season and he really fits with what TB likes in players and their needs. He hit LH pitcher well last year (struggled against righties). He’s a good defensive RF. He’s cheap and likely to get better.
They traded Edwin Jackson for Joyce around the time of the winter meetings.
Burrell demolishes left handed pitching and has done so his whole career.
The rays are a tough team to predict this year. If they sign Burrell they will have substanstially improved the talent on their team. Joyce and Burrell in the line up and then replacing Jackson with David Price along with possibly using Jeff Nieman in the pen this year.
They have upgraded their talent considerably this year. That said probably over performed last year as everything broke right for them.
I give Tampa Bay credit – their management could have said that we won 97 games and we have a young team that ’s going to mature and get better.
Instead they actively went out and improved the team by ugrading their talent. I’d guess they are well aware that some of their players may regress next year/ get hurt so upgrading the talent was important. They didn’t get fooled by their record.
It seems to me they are doing the opposite of what the Angels have done so far this off season. They Angels probably weren’t as good as their record last year – but so far they haven’t upgraded the talent at all – and have taken a step back in terms of hitting as they’ve lost both Tex and Kotchman.
Not to give Sam I am anymore attention but, if you are going to point out Cashman’s shortcomings, how about mentioning how he was spot on in his evaluation of the corner OF market. This, two months before the “experts on ESPN had an inkling the corner OF market would dip so badly.
Instead of offering Bobby Abreu arbitration, which he would have accepted (costing the Yankees 18 million dollars for 2009), he declined it and put the money toward Tex.
In essence, he decided on Teixeira over Abreu. Even the most vocal Cashman haters have to give him props on that one.
Re: the guest bloggers, I’m not much on attacking them personally. I think that should be out of bounds.
If someone offers a point of view, which is light on facts, argue the facts.
As far as folks “hating” Sam, I don’t see that as the case at all. The guy wrote a blog entry, full of holes, and did so (by his admission) to get hits on his blog.
It doesn’t make me “hate” Sam. I just makes me less inclined to visit his blog because he isn’t interested in balance.
There are plenty of ways one can discuss Cashman’s reign in NY. There have been good and bad moments and all of it are fair game.
However, when you only discuss the bad, and purposely mislead or misstate the facts, you can’t expect folks on here to not bring out those inconsistencies.
If Tino is not to be retired, then #24
1pm tomorrow-cool.
do ya guys think the yanks have a chance to sign lackey when he is a free agent?
i really think we have a chance to sign halliday wen hes a free agent i think burnett will convice him to come to da bronx
Cano wears 24
Good points, CB – In this division, you really can’t afford to make any mistakes.
By the way – saw the “First Inning” of Ken Burns’ Baseball last night – and I loved it. I admit, I’m gushy over baseball. Everything those talking heads said about how beautiful a game it is …..it’s how I feel. Early baseball history is so interesting – and it shows how nothing ever changes. The owners now are no different then the owners then – interested in controlling the players and the bottom line. I know some people get upset about how much $$$ the players make, but IMO, it is a far better system now than it was with the reserve clause in place. That was detestable and I found myself on the side of the players…….which I am still today. Baltimore and Boston were the top two teams…..all the other teams felt rather hopeless in their wake, and so did the fans. Sound familiar? It’s amazing how the game has come full circle.
I loved hearing about John McGraw and the feisty Baltimore Orioles – just extremely interesting.
“In essence, he decided on Teixeira over Abreu. Even the most vocal Cashman haters have to give him props on that one.”
After it’s all said and done, that’s the way it looks. You can make the argument that he was thinking that if he turns down Abreu, that’s 18mil he’s got to spend on Tex. Truth be told, I think he would have turned down Bobby regardless of the Tex situation. Once they signed Nady, Abreu’s fate was pretty much sealed.
Olney is now reporting that the Rays have come to an agreement with Burrell – 2yrs/16M.
I’d have to think the Red Sox are going to make some kind of move soon. They haven’t improved their team outside of some bull pen help.
I wonder if they are forced into trying to make a trade for a catcher with some offensive upside now.
Im sorry but Tino shouldn’t be retired. Dont get me wrong, I love Tino and think he was a great player and Yankee. But at some point the Yankees have to really evaluate how many numbers can actually be retired.
I mean obviously soon 2 will be gone. 42 is already. What else? possibly 13?
yankeefan91- I would love Lackey in pinstripes. However after not getting involved with CC I would think the Angels will badly want to resign their ace.
I guess everyone on the East Coast is immune to economic problems while everyone else is left with the leftovers.
If we can somehow get Pujols to the East then the All Star game should simply be AL East vs NL East.
The division is going to be very tough this year. The Yankees have improved substantially but Tampa is better on paper as well. Like every year, injuries will determine a lot of the final positioning.
What is Oliver Perez asking price? anybody know? If Pettite don’t come through we should maybe try to sign Ollie for 2-3years. I know he has his ups and downs but when he is on you can’t tough him. Any thoughts on this?
I say give Teixeira Joe Pepitone’s number, #25. Maybe he can inherit The Jolter’s zest for life.
CB,
The interesting part of the Red Sox, at least in IMO, is Gammons waxing poetic about all of their moves may have hurt them in this off-season.
When he went on and on about how the Red Sox “have planned for two years to sign Mark Teixeira”, I have to think that entered into the Yankees thinking in getting him.
Here me out on this one…..
The Yankees had a deal in place for Mike Cameron and Andy Pettitte totalling 20 million dollars.
I know for a fact many of the folks in the front office figured Tex would go to Boston when free agency began.
All of a sudden, the Yankees pull out of the Cameron talks, Pettitte is put on hold, and they immediately go into attack mode when the Thursday night meeting between the Sox and Tex goes nowhere.
Perhaps they examined the market, saw how signing Tex not only helps them but, really hurts the Sox, and pounced.
Sometimes, Gammons love for the Sox telegraphs their moves. In Teixeira’s case, I think it hurt the Sox more than helped them.
Particularly, the day after the Yankees got him when he went on the air and said Boston’s pursuit of Tex was a “hoax”. As if to attempt damage control.
Bottom line, if the season started today, the Sox are the third best team in the division right now.
Will Theo make moves? He is going to have to make moves because he has a big hole at catcher, in the rotation, and major health questions with Lowell and Ortiz.
Going to be interesting to see how he fills the holes. While there are a lot of players out there, the options are not very tantalizing.
The name on the back of the jersey DOES makes sense for those numbers which are not retired. As the poster above noted, there’s a big difference in wearing a #45 for Chili Davis and #45 for Carl Pavano!
The retired number jerseys, however, should never have a name on them – knock-offs or not.
Kids can wear anything they want!
My husband won’t wear a jersey. I almost talked him into getting one for when we go see a Yankees game in Baltimore – we were all going to get one. We never got around to it though. I told him at least it wasn’t home and when you’re on a “vacation” you can do things you normally wouldn’t do and deny it later.
BUT if he were to get one, he did tell me it would be a Mantle.
Me? I don’t know – Mariano, maybe?
u imagine a rotation like this
sabathia
lackey
burnett
wang
chamberlain
wowwwww all of them have a pontential 15+ wins
#45 is not an option. That is going to be retired in the OLD ballpark on opening day. Did i say retired, i meant burned.
If i was Tex i wouldnt take #25. Who knows if it because a defensive jinx to have that number after mano de piedras Giambi.
IMO, he should go with 32. Flipping 23(his idle Mattingly)to 32. Or be the first player with 23 and a half.
#13 will be retired in a lovely ceremony held on Cravat Giveaway Day (limited to the first 15,000 metrosexuals over the age of 35).
Doreen, maybe you should get a Joe Pepitone jersey. You already have long hair and a hair dryer.
CB,
I noticed you didnt mention the signing of Penny. Do you think he will help the bottom of their rotation out any? Or do you think he will be the second coming of Colon?
hey everyone
i have a question about mlb network, and i figure someone here can help
i live on long island and get YES but i dont get mlb network. Will there ever be a Yankees game on mlbn but not YES?
thanks!
SJ44, I always thought the Yanks had interest in Texeria and Cashman’s meeting with him before the Winter Meetings only renforced that in my mind….Cashman read and played the situation well…Then when the Angels announced their decision to drop out it basically came down to Boston or the Yanks…..That visit to Texas by Henry & Co. and the return to Boston without a deal just opened the door for Cashamn….I always maintained that Texeria was the perfect player and there was a serious need for him…..The stars and the moons aligned just perfectly and Cashman took advantage…….Clutch hit by Brian….
Arod does have cravatas
S.o.S., #32 has been retired for almost 20 years…for Ellie Howard.
Im just wondering if the people who had a #45 jersey with their own(personalized)last names on it should burn it as well.
Texiera should take 21. The number isn’t retired. It’s okay. If he does well the fans won’t care.
“Perhaps they examined the market, saw how signing Tex not only helps them but, really hurts the Sox, and pounced.”
SJ,
The whole Tex situation was puzzling from the get go. I think I asked Ray or Brian this – but for the life of me I couldn’t figure out how the Sox leaking their “lust” for Tex was going to help them in any way.
And as the off season went on those stories kept accumulating and one upping each other. Caffardo says the Sox have been dead set on signing Tex for a year. Gammons sees Caffardo one year and raises another…
It was just sort of absurd. Why would a team keep leaking all of those stories for a boras client. I suppose it could have been to try to “intimidate” other teams from getting in on the bidding as the Sox were assuming that the yanks were truly out (but why would the sox ever make that assumption? The press can but not the sox…)
I almost got the sense that the Sox were buying too much into their own press clippings. They were setting Tex signing up as a done deal – from the hyperbolic leaks to henry and his private plane. Tex signing the paperwork would be a kind of coronation. It almost seemed to me that the sox were trying to write this media narrative that coronates them as once again being the smartest, best run, most rational organization in the game – even when they were spending $170M. I just don’t get what they’re angle was with all of those leaks.
With the yankees – I just don’t know. I think they were assuming Tex would get $200M + and then when they saw the market softening as a whole they decided to wait on further expenditures (Cameron, pettitte…) to see what happened. I’d guess that was the dynamic. Ultimately $180 was probably less than they were originally assuming and they pounced.
It’s good that they did. Here was a very interesting post from Chone Smith who does good work on statistical projections on the impact of Tex signing on the AL East race. He projected the total runs scored for the yanks, sox and rays after tex went to the yanks:
“I ran the top 3 East teams as well. I get this:
Yankees 871
Red Sox 866
Rays 781
That’s after Tex. The American League dodged a bullet when the Red Sox were too cheap to get the Tex deal done. He’s 30 runs better than Mike Lowell or Xavier Nady, so add 30 to the Red Sox and take 30 off the Yankees and that would have been ugly. The Red Sox are still a very good team, but they can be beat. I think if they had Tex they would have run away with the American League. The Rays offense looks about the same as last year, but they have room to make a big improvement if they can add a DH/OF like Milton Bradley.”

So, wait, long hair and a hair dryer automatically makes me a Joe Pepitone fan? I’m not sure how I feel about that, GB7.
If I were to get a jersey it would be a modern player, though. Because my Yankee passion didn’t start in the 60s and 70s.
It will be interesting to see what number Teixeira chooses. I don’t expect he’ll say anything earth-shattering, but I do like the press conferences. It’s a kind of confirmation/closure that the signing did actually happen.
Teixeira could become the first triple digit uniform number…723. Power hitting switch hitter and GG first baseman….it’s a natural.
He should take 28 (so Joe G. can have 27 on his back, and Teixeira can one-up him with Title #28 as the goal on his back) and they should give the Melk Man a spring training invitee number so he understands that he’s got to bust it to make the team and see playing time in ‘09.
From the Boston perspective (geographic not fandom) the Yankees really, really hurt the Red Sox with the Tex signing. The Yanks not only markedly improved their team but kept their main rivals from getting a player who fit their perfect profile. I have said this for some time. The Sox will be interesting this year. They now have a lot of question marks when health is concerned. They will Bay to deal with next year when his contract is up. To improve they will likely need to trade for an impact player which will deplete their system.
This is really really far fetched – but perhaps the Sox feel highly enough of Lars Anderson that they were just attempting to drive up the price for Texeira (although pulling out of the bidding defeats that purpose).
I simply think Cashman beat Theo in this case plain and simple.
“Texiera should take 21. The number isn’t retired. It’s okay. If he does well the fans won’t care.”
And if he sucks, he’ll get booed worse than A-Rod.
“I simply think Cashman beat Theo in this case plain and simple.”
Perhaps. I’m more of a mind that Tex didn’t really want to go to BOS anyway so we were at the advantage from the get go.
Doreen, Joe Pep, like you is a work of art. The stories about him are priceless. He was a favorite target of Mantle’s practical jokes. The first time Mantle saw Pepitone with a hair dryer, he waited until Pepitone went in to take a shower and filled the dryer with talcum powder.

Hey – who’s gone once Tex is added to the 40 man?
Shelly, Giese, Wright, Ransom are possible suspects, with a spot freeing trade also a possibility. Likely see another move or 2 before we’re done – Pettitte or another SP would require a spot. Does Ransom have a shot to be the IF backup? The final bench spot remains available, though if both Melky and Gardner stick, it’s gone. I don’t see the point of that though.
CB,
Completely agree. When you look at next years FA’s, there isn’t a Tex among them as position players.
Matt Holliday? This year will be interesting for him. His home/road splits are not 120+ million dollar worthy IMO.
If he hits in the AL, and in Oakland in particular, he improves his stock.
Even if he does, he isn’t as a good a player as Tex.
Pat M, no question the guy is the right fit for the right time.
I just drank too much Kool Aid when significant members of the organization told me they didn’t have Tex and CC budgeted for this year! lol
They were super stealth about it. I also think Tex’s desire to play in NY really helped moved things along quickly.
As far as the rest of the roster? Forget Manny, Rowand, Bedard, etc. Sign Pettitte and go to ST with the team as is.
For a change, they have roster flexibility and depth. Why mess with it?
I think the mix of players are better than its been in years. A nice combo of stars, gamers and arms. They will also be better defensively with the roster as is.
They just need to use ST as the time to get guys to get to know each other mesh as a team, etc.
Keep it together, let guys compete for the few remaining jobs, and see how it shakes out.
As far as Matsui is concerned, let’s be real. The guy had minor knee surgery. He didn’t have his leg amputated.
He was on his way to an All Star season prior to hurting his knee. He can DH, drive in runs, and hit in the clutch. I’d keep him and not waste my time chasing any other free agents.
He’s also playing for a new deal in 2009 so, I expect him to put together a very solid season.
“Shelly, Giese, Wright, Ransom are possible suspects, with a spot freeing trade also a possibility.”
Dump Shelley. His 15mins of fame came and went.
“I noticed you didnt mention the signing of Penny. Do you think he will help the bottom of their rotation out any?”
I should have mentioned Penny. I liked his signing for what it was – low risk back of the rotation order. But there’s legitimate concerns with his shoulder so who knows.
That said – neither Penny nor Ramirez or both are enough. This isn’t what the Sox had in mind for this winter in a competitive division.
I think they’ll make a move. But so far it seems like they were almost assuming that they would sign tex. I think that’s why John Henry sent out that email after all that meeting in Dallas. He felt that the Sox had significant leverage – he was trying to tell Tex take our offer or if you have some huge offer from an awful team that’s going to lose 100 games+ I dare you take it.
They lost on that gamble very badly and right now they seem like they are spinning.
I found the Hanley Ramirez leak pretty telling. That was just an absurd notion and Florida never even considered it seriously. It’s clear the marlins have no reason to leak that to heyman/ verducci – i’m sure the sox did. And they probably did that to just develop some positive spin after tex going to the yanks – look at how creative we are, look at our all star management, etc.
That Hanley Ramirez leak was pure damage control on the sox part.
re: Uniform numbers …..
At present, available uniform numbers are 12-14-17-19-21-25-35-39-45-47-53.
Damaso Marte will wear his familiar #43 that was used by Rasner. Marte gave his #34 to A.J. Burnett.
Teixeira will get his familiar #25.
Brian Bruney gave his #33 to Nick Swisher and took #38.
Dave Eiland gave his #52 to C.C. Sabathia.
If Mick Kelliher and Eiland have number in the 50’s, it has the entire coaching staff with nunbers in the 50’s.
Let’s hope Alfredo Aceves doesn’t get assigned #90 like he had last September. No football numbers please.
Phil Hughes likes a #5 with his number. Let’s hope he takes #35 and has a career like Mussina had.
GB7 -
I knew Pepitone was a character of sorts. That’s a pretty good practical joke by Mantle. Especially back in those days – Pepitone must of been one of the first metrosexuals! Him and Joe Willy Namath! (Real men don’t style their hair – or wear pantyhose!)
“He’s also playing for a new deal in 2009 so, I expect him to put together a very solid season.”
Are you sure about that? After everything he’s been through, I wouldn’t be surprised if Matsui retires after the season and goes back to Japan with his sketchy wife.
“S.o.S., #32 has been retired for almost 20 years…for Ellie Howard.”
My bad gb7,didnt get the memo. I should have known since know one came up with that first.
Duncan will be history and most likely a pitcher or two (starter and relief pitcher)will be traded by ST.
Hmm…I feel like Giese would be the oddest man out from the group you mentioned. Ransom is still valuable because he can play all the infield positions and the outfield (although he can’t play any of them particularly well defensively), so I think he’s safe. Shelley seems like the second most likely to get DFA’ed, which is a shame, but he doesn’t really have a position and is really one-dimensional, combined with the fact that he’s too old to be considered any type of prospect. Wright I imagine they want to hold on to, unless Cashman swings a trade for some high-upside low minor leaguer to clear up a spot, but that seems doubtful.
What about 19 for Tex? I’m sure Dave Righetti wouldn’t mind.
After seeing this Burrell signing I had to come in here and give Cashman props for not offering Abreu arb. It was a good decision. It saved a headache to deal with this off season.
Abreu is going to be lucky to get 3 years for 30 million at this point.
He would have jumped at arb and would have gotten 17 million for a year hoping the Yankees would keep him.
The one thing that people are failing to admit in this discussion is the Yankees could have released Abreu and not had to pay him the 17 million he would have won in arb before the regular season. Arbitration awards are non guaranteed contracts.
They were not obligated to pay him that unless they kept him on the roster for the regular season.
They still could have went to arb with him and signed Tex and not counted Abreu’s money if they had no intention of paying it.
They also could have potentially traded him although at 17 million for one year I don’t think there’s a team out there who would have taken him.
They also could have still reaped a draft pick by offering arb.
That said, I think Cash made a great decision because he removed the headache of having to deal with Abreu and arb with him, but the way the arb rules work are if you go to arb you are not bound to pay/guarantee the contract.
The team still has the option to release the player and pay him nothing.
“The panel, without opinion, awards the player a one-year, non-guaranteed contract at one salary or the other. If the player is cut within 16 days before the season begins, he is entitled only to 30 days’ termination pay. If the player is cut during spring training but after the 16th day before the season begins, he is entitled only to 45 days’ termination pay.”
So if the Yanks had gone to arb with Abreu and he accepted it, they would have had to pay him termination pay at some point.
Tex should take 21 … end this BS about booing someone with 21 already.
Doreen not sure that Pepitone was a metrosexual. He was married 4 or 5 times. He idolized Mantle, even when they re playing together. Pepitone told that story in a book. His hair was still wet and he had just bought a new silk sirt and purple, crushed velvet suit and matching alligator shoes. He’s all dressed for a night out, turns on the dryer and …POOF…powder everywhere.
CB -
Speaking of using spring training as a time for the team to mesh/get to know each other, etc., who besides Jeter and ARod are playing in the WBC?
Correction: ***shirt**
Oh, GB7 -
Crushed velvet suit, alligator shoes, silk shirt? Pepitone is the very definition of that era’s metrosexual!
And I wish I had a picture of that occurrence. Sounds hysterical.
Burrell to the Rays for 2 years 16 mil total.
Multiple marriages notwithstanding, that is.
“That said, I think Cash made a great decision….”
It’s only a great decision if Tex lives up to his billing, Posada and Matsui rebound and Nady has a similiar year to ‘08. These things lessens the offensive hit we’ll take over the Giambi and Abreu departures. If Tex has a bad year for some reason (pressure over the contract, unending NY media presence, etc), we’ll be missing Abreu big time.
“The one thing that people are failing to admit in this discussion is the Yankees could have released Abreu and not had to pay him the 17 million he would have won in arb before the regular season. Arbitration awards are non guaranteed contracts.”
G. Love,
This is simply not true in the real world or rather it’s only true as a technicality of contract language. It is technically true but it never happens and a team has to have significant cause to say the player was not meeting his contractual obligations.
If the yankees had cut abreu – especially after the down turn in the market – the union would have simply filed a grievance and one.
It’s true the contracts are non-guaranteed but the team has to have significant cause for terminating the contract – those causes are not just willy nilly we don’t want you. They are spelled out in the CBA in detail.
There’s no pratcial precedent for this. I can’t think of one guy ever got cut this way.
When Maddux accepted arbitration out of the blue several years ago the Braves felt compelled to make an awful trade of Millwood to the phillies just to clear pay roll. They were building their staff around millwood. Why did they not simply cut Maddux?
Not offering Abreu, Pettite, Giambi or Rodgriguez turned out to the be the prescient move in every case.
Bright guys at baseball prospectus and even at ESPN said the yankees and other teams were basically stupid and negligent in their handling of draft picks (Sheehan, Law, etc.). They were all wrong.
Abrue accepts arbitration – the yanks are unlikely to have signed Tex.
“Burrell to the Rays for 2 years 16 mil total.”
That can’t make Abreu too happy. He made 16mil last year and might have to settle for less than 10 this year. Ouch!!
Aceves wore #91 and chose it because he idolized Dennis Rodman. Safe to say he will keep it…
Doreen, he was an original. They used to soak his toupees in the toilet all the time. He brought three to the game…wearing one to the game, a different one for after and his gamer.
SJ44, I’m on the same page, this club looks good….Matsui will be the ideal # 5 hitter…..CF will playitself out in camp…..Sign Andy to a contract for 12 and incentives…This is the best roster they’ve gone to camp with in awhile……Like to have a reliable RH stick on the bench though
“who besides Jeter and ARod are playing in the WBC?”
Doreen,
The rosters aren’t set final until February. But I think Jeter and ARod might be it as CC was asked already and said no. Burnett said he wasn’t asked.
I don’t think the DR will ask Cano given how bad his year was. Posada is a definite no for PR given his injury.
I am not sure about Wang but I dont’ think the yankees are going to let him participate.
Of course, that termination pay at 30 days is about 1/6 of the total contract, and at 45 days about a 1/4 of it. Not chump change, and certainly not “nothing”, when the contract is for $16+ MM. Player contracts are predicated on a 180-185 day year.
And there has been speculation that there are possible grievance filings for releasing a player if he demonstrates his skills at an adequate level (a clause in the standard platyer contract regarding release). So it’s not quite that simple perhaps.
SJ/CB do any of you think Mark Melancon makes the team automatically or will he have to compete for a pen spot with Vares, Albaladejo, Edwar Ramirez in ST?
GB7 -
What I remember most about Pepitone was his caricature as drawn by Bill Gallo in the NY Daily News.
His drawings are the only thing I miss about that newspaper.
“Tex should take 21 … end this BS about booing someone with 21 already.”
I like this idea. I would have Oneil hand him the number in front of all the fans. Why would Paul do it? Simple. If Tex has monster years with us then we can finally retire Tex’s number and Oneil would think it had alot to do with him. We can finally get past this issue/nonsense.
CB,
I was trying to think of a situation where a player went to arb and then was released and I couldn’t. I’m sure it’s happened, but I know it’s rare.
However, I didn’t see anything in the rules that stated you needed a reason to release a player after going to arb with them, but I’ll take your word for it that it’s an unspoken agreement.
It just seems odd that the rules clearly state that the contract awarded is a one year non guaranteed deal and that the team has the option to get out of the contract before the season starts.
I thought perhaps the Yanks didn’t want to go that route simply to avoid having to carry Abreu on the 40 man if they didn’t intend to keep him which in that case makes it shrewd as well.
I think Cash did the right thing. Abreu didn’t want to leave here and would have went to arb and won a fat deal.
The fact that Burrell got for 2 years what Abreu would have gotten for 1 in arb this year is proof enough Cashman made a good move.
I tend to think that this signing on top of the Fuentes discount is going to set off a flurry of below expectations deals from here on in.
If Pettitte still has 10 million on the table from the Yankees, he’d be wise to take it.
“I think i read that he will be taking 25, since 23 is unofficially “retired”.”
michelle b. (X is the best letter in the alphabet!) :
23 has been OFFICIALLY retired for a while now. Do you not see the numbers in monument park?
CB -
That’s actually a good turn of events for the Yankees, if only two of their regulars are missing from spring training, and especially, none of their pitchers. I think it’s a critical year for this team in terms of really establishing a connection with their manager. I think it was severely understated how difficult the transition from one manager to another was for the team. I don’t think it would have mattered who the manager was. Torre was here for so long and routines and relationships were established. Even if Girardi was perfect (which he was not), there would have been growing pains, so to speak. A new reality had to set in.
“A nice combo of stars, gamers and arms. ”
SJ:
Who are the gamers, you speak of? Serious question. Besides the most obvious ones. Can you go in-depth. What new free agents that NY has signed, Do you consider to be gamers? (Tex and AJ in particular)
NYY got the power they lost by signing Teixeira and trading for Swisher. What the lost was Abreu’s speed and base stealing ability. Even if Matui and Posada match there average numbers, they’ll be well ahead of last year. Whatever they get from CF and any improvement that Cano has, will just add to the offense. If NYY keeps Nady for the year, there will be enough at bats for Matsui, Damon Swisher and Nady, and still get plenty for Cabrera and Gardner. The offense will be closer to 2007 than 2008.
CB Robinson Cano is being strongly considered to start for the Dominican Rep. at 2B for the WBC and there is talk that Alex might move to SS and Aramis Ramirez will play 3B, w/ Hanley and Jose in the outfield. This is also a reason why they will begin training earlier than the rest.
I disagree about #21. You’ve got to let it rest for another year at least. Because if it is accepted as Teixeira’s number and not protested, then the argument becomes it was a racist reason that people didn’t want Hawkins to have the number. It may not be true, it may actually have been that people felt he wasn’t “worthy” of the number (what garbage!), but it will come across differently. At the very least it will dilute the argument that people wanted Paulie’s number retired.
“Burrell to the Rays for 2 years 16 mil total.”
I just wished that our signings were that cheap. Has the difference between top notch guys vs good players ever been this lopsided before?
Immagine C.C. singing for 16 mil a year, AJ 14, Tex 15. Oh well,we cant have it all.
Why are we not talking #6? Torre doesn’t even get mentioned at stadium closing but we will hold that number for him?
I liked Torre but if he still feels scorned and doesn’t come back for a while then we have the lone single digit number sitting out there for Tex who could be here 8 yrs and put up some hefty numbers.
We could always retire it for both of then like we did #8 down the road if Torre comes back. Or if Tex doesn’t do great then we could always just retire it for Torre in 8 yrs.
Thoughts?
Damn Milton Bradley signed w/ the Cubs.
Love this signing.. I feel more assured about the Yankees this upcoming year than I have in the past 8 years. I think the Lineup is well balanced now.. Love ARod hitting 3. The Rotation is stacked with power arms.. The bullpen is young and versatile.. ancored by the man himself Mariano Rivera.. the benched looks decent.. I think Nick Swisher off the bench is great.. just need a Mark Grudzielanek type to round it out and lets go get Number 27.
Is Mo playing in the WBC for Panama? Better question is Panama even in it?
“Because if it is accepted as Teixeira’s number and not protested, then the argument becomes it was a racist reason that people didn’t want Hawkins to have the number.”
Perhaps, but Ensberg had the number before Hawkins and he was hearing it from the fans as well so race (for most people) really has nothing to do with it.
Trevor,
I think the yanks will be open to considering Melancon but the odds will be heavily stacked against him making the team straight out of spring training.
There’s just so much pitching depth in that spot right now. They have no reason to move melancon any faster than is absolutely needed.
Barring injuries i’d expect him to start the season in AAA and then get called up later. I could see the yankees trading middle relief mid season. Teams always need bull pen help once injuries set in, which they always do.
Tex should get “He Hate Me” or “Dos Cinco” if he chooses 25.
I love the optimism here as we dream about retiring Tex’s number. Perhaps the ceremony will be held the same year they retire Joba’s number and Phil’s number and Igawa’s sunglasses.
Realistically, how spectacular would Tex have to be to get his number retired? I think Reggie is the only free-agent-aquisition to have his number retired – was there another?
Maris had his number retired, and of course the Babe, but most others came up as Yankees. What would Tex have to do to join that club?
Laura –
I forgot about Ensberg. Thanks for the reminder.
(I just remember with Hawkins it was really over-the-top.)
“Robinson Cano is being strongly considered to start for the Dominican Rep. at 2B for the WBC”
They can ask. I don’t think the yankees will allow him to participate after the awful year he had. And if Cano decides to go and even presses the yankees to let him he’d be making an enormous mistake.
Cano was one of the single worst starting regulars in baseball last year. He has a ton to prove this season after signing that deal. He needs to be in camp and should not expect any exemptions from that given how much he underperformed last year.
Kiss Duncan goodbye for room on the 40. With Tex and the glut of corner OFers, Duncan has no chance of sticking with the Yanks.
Mr. Board Game is going to regret that signing. People get on BOS for being too white. The Cubs may have more black players than BOS does, but their fans are some of the most racists in the game. You can count on one hand how many Afro Americans attend games at Wrigley. Expect for Milton’s stay there to be a rocky one.
Nick GREAT point. Maybe we should retire TEX,CC,AJ all in the same year makes sense to me and then we can retire Matt Kemps # after we trade Cano for him
“What would Tex have to do to join that club?”
Maybe win 2 or 3 rings, a batting title, a few Gold Gloves, some things along those lines? You know, the garden variety low-key accomplishments that get your number put up on the wall in Monument Park.
Doreen,
I see your point. But the only way people are going to get over someone wearing 21 is if that player is better than Pauli. I think that Tex would make that problem a fore gone conclusion. I dont think it was Hawkins color of skin. I think it was the possition he had on the team. If we had a bench player wear the number,i believe the same thing would have happened. Tex will be well liked ala Oneil and wear the number well.
I really expect that one of Veras or Ramirez, and possibly both get traded by ST to make room for Melancon.
“he was hearing it from the fans as well so race (for most people) really has nothing to do with it.”
of course race has nothing to do with it. both sucks, which is why fans booed.
Tex in my opinion would have to play out his whole contract and avg. 330 35 plus HRs round 120 RBIS win say 5-6 GG and win 2 MVPS while winning at least 3 WS?
“(I just remember with Hawkins it was really over-the-top.)”
The fan’s reaction to Hawkins was beyond ridiculous. I don’t know if him being black played into it. I just know I was glad when he was traded.
GB7,,,,,In the book ” Joe you could have made us proud ” there’s a story about a pool game with Sinatra…Do you recall it…..Great book by the way….
Maybe not 35 plus HRS but Id say round 30 each year. Maybe not 2 MVPs but Id say hed def have to win 1 and maybe some type of MVP in the playoffs
grafaxkid, you get triple bonus points for reminding me of “He Hate Me” — one of the funniest things in sports in the last decade. I’m not sure I could explain just *why* it’s funny, but it just is.
All good points CB but I’m guessing the Yankees will let him play in the WBC and he can get a start on playing competitive baseball before the season even starts. They might use that to see if Robi has really worked on stuff this offseason.
SoS -
I do agree with you – and I guess if there was a guy to wear the number and not upset whoever it was that was upset about the indignity of someone wearing O’Neil’s number it would be Teixeira. It would also probably put to rest any equivocation about whether the number is going to be retired or not.
I was just thinking that the controversy is still too fresh – only one season removed – and perhaps it’s best if no one takes that number right now. BUT – then again, giving it to a regular (because as Laura reminded me, Ensberg had the number and he was not a regular) – and an all-star, professional-type-player regular such as Teixeira is, would probably not offend too many people.
Personally, I have no problem with if a number is not officially retired, it is available – to anyone.

Whoa! I have no idea why that posted twice. Sorry guys.
Nick, I laugh everytime I watch a football game and think of Rod Smart in his XFL Outlaws uniform!!
Nick,
Can you add AJAX future number to that as well. As some have already inserted him in center field for 2010 without him even playing AAA.
CB,
If we are so deep in the bullpen, why not use our strength to strengthen our weekness? I would think alot of teams would love to get their hands on some good relief pitching while we need a center fielder and a utility infielder.

Isn’t that what we are paying him 180 mill for?
I’m not saying that we will retire his number but if he puts up those kind of stats then maybe.
Do we retire Torre’s #6 ???
CC’s number retirement ceremony has an opt-out clause. He wants it held at a Yankee away game on the west coast.
“Can you add AJAX future number to that as well. ”
I will say 21.
lol, he did wore 21 during the Hawaiian league.
PAT M, loved that book. Any book that mentions Sinatra and Pepitone is going to be great. That’s a rough crowd to be running with. I know that Pepitone was about one step from going to prison when he was a kid. Running with gangs almost got him killed. He was shot in the stomach in a gang fight. Just a great character, though. When he got his bonus for signing with the Yanks, he bought a red Pontiac Bonneville droptop and a speed boat. He couldn’t swim and got seasick.
“If we are so deep in the bullpen, why not use our strength to strengthen our weekness?”
Eventually they will. But right now the free agent market is still flooded with players (including relievers – e.g. Trevor Hoffman) and teams will want to assess where they’re rosters are.
There have been relatively few trades this off season. Why trade for a player when it looks like the value for so many guys in the market is plummeting?
Just want to say there is only one “He Hate Me” so No.
No we are paying 180$ million because we can and he was one of the best hitters on the market this year thats why. His numbers may be around what i suggested but I said avg and plus so that means he prolly has to do better than that in the majority of the years since he will decline most likely towards the end of his contract. Also remember this it will be hard for him or AROD to win MVPs I think because both could take away votes from each other. To me I dont care bout his number being retired. If he plays hard and does whats on back of his baseball card and we win some WS it’ll be worth the money
GB7,
What do you think we can get for one of the two or both?
“Do we retire Torre’s #6 ???”
Good question. My gut says yes. Not sure the Steins are thinking that right now, but at some point, they’ll have to address it.
A full season of Posada, Matsui, and Wang not seeing any time on the DL will go a long way toward a championship season. Everything else is a plus.
How ’bout “Giambi Hate Me” for those catching feelings. LOL
Have they decided A-Rod would be hitting 3rd and Tex 4th?
Who are the gamers?
CC Sabathia is the ultimate gamer. A guy, in his FA year, taking the ball FIVE times on short rest to try and win is a gamer. Name me another player who has done that in the last 20 years.
Swisher is also a gamer. Sees a lot of pitches, plays hard, comes to the park ready to go each day.
Tex is another gamer. Plays everyday, works like crazy at his craft, is well respected by other players in the game.
You don’t have to be an underachiever to be a gamer. You have to be a guy that’s accountable and brings it to the park everyday. CC, Nick and Tex all do that and it will make this team better in the area of intangibles.
CB,
Cano had a great spring last year and started off horrible.
I think the Baseball Classic will help him.. I think his AB’s should be more intense and if he slumps in the WBC.. then maybe he starts to get out of it by the time the season begins. who knows.. but from what I read.. he’s been working hard this offseason.. so Spring Training is kinda a waste of time for these players.
I think retiring Torre’s #6 will be addressed once he is finished managing. I don’t believe it will happen while he is managing the Dodgers. I also think Joe will come around, the Steinbrenners will come around. I think it was one of the situations where it was all for the best, but very awkward at the time. Knowing it’s time to go (both sides), and both sides simultaneously trying to figure it out on the fly.
I can’t even begin to explain how excited I am about Teixeira as a Yankee. I have not been this excited since they signed Carl Pavano (seriously).
I would argue Posada is a gamer too. I like his attitude and more than anythng, i think losing him last year cost us the playoffs. He is a leader more than Jeter is, just not as flashy.
“How ‘bout “Giambi Hate Me” for those catching feelings. LOL”
Could work keep going.
S.o.S., not a lot seperately, other than good, young minor leaguer, but packaged with an outfielder or a good minor league pither , like maybe Kennedy or even Aceves, quite a lot. They’ll target a team that has those needs to put them over the top in the division. SF, KC (maybe), Dodgers, possibly even Seattle.
Boston signed Nick Green.
YankeeRay thats a good question actually bout Torre. He was the first manager to win a WS title in 18 years for us. He won 4 WS titles, and was beloved in NY so I could see him def getting it retired someday. If it doesnt happen would I be shocked? Not really. Ill tell you one thing Joe Giradi will never get his #27 retired
Tex, 2 MVP’s? I hope everyone realizes who he is playing opposite on the diamond. I just want Tex to get his 30 bombs, .300 AVG and have a high OBP. MVP’s are personal accolades I’ll be happy with a few GG’s and a couple of WS rings outta Tex.
This is remarkable – Andruw Jones has supposedly been kicked off his Dominican Winter ball team for under performance.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a major league player being asked to leave winter ball because he wasn’t good enough to play.
Two years ago Jones had a legitimate shot to make the hall of fame. And now he’s not good enough to play for Aguilas?
http://6-4-2.blogspot.com/
The amazing thing to me is the Phillies just gave Ibanez, who is 5 years older and another LH bat in their lineup, a 3year 30+ mil deal.
“Boston signed Nick Green.”
LOL hahahahas. Boston took the Yanks’ trash 2x already. first was Jason Lane before the season ended, and now Green. hahas.
Girardi is in a tough spot. It is hard for a manager to coach players he played with only a few years ago. You think Jeter, Posada and Rivera want to hear what he has to say anymore? This is why it worked for him in Florida.
We should trade for Lou. How bout Pinella kicking the new yankee stadium dirt as fieldin culbreth or one of those other clowns?
He wore 23 for Mattingly and that was on Texas
Wore 24 on the Braves
Wore 25 on the Angles
25 makes sense, Mattingly … Tino …. Tex
Unless all in succession
23, 24, 25, and 26, although Girardi’s 27 would have been nice.
Also paying respect to Giambi, 23-24-25 now 26
All in all don’t care what number he wares as long as he wins number 27,28 and so on in succession
“I think retiring Torre’s #6 will be addressed once he is finished managing. I don’t believe it will happen while he is managing the Dodgers.”
I think it will be a while as well (most certainly not while he’s managing the Dodgers). It might even coincide with his entrance into the Hall.
CB Andrew quit on baseball, people say this is not the same kid that entered the league w/ a chip on his shoulder. P.S. if the Dominican League kicks you off and your making up excuses your done as a player. Andrew has basically signed his own pink slip.
Did tex and a-rod ever play for texas at the same time?
Sure, those guys are gamers, but are they gritty?
“He’s just too heavy to play at the level he used to play at in the outfield,” one scout said on Saturday.
“He’s fat,” said another.*
“Did tex and a-rod ever play for texas at the same time?”
Yes.
“The amazing thing to me is the Phillies just gave Ibanez, who is 5 years older and another LH bat in their lineup, a 3year 30+ mil deal.”
That deal still has me scratching my head. Ibanez just isn’t all that good. I remember a game he played at the stadium; he must have dropped 3 balls in that game. Granted, it was wicked sunny out, but still. I wasn’t impressed.
“The amazing thing to me is the Phillies just gave Ibanez, who is 5 years older and another LH bat in their lineup, a 3year 30+ mil deal.”
This so far has arguably been the most puzzling/worst move of the off season. It just makes no sense at all.
The Phillies were already vulnerable to left handed pitching. And now their middle of the order is 3 left handed hitters.
Ibanez is basically an older version of Burrell who doesn’t hit as well. They are both horrible fielders.
Ruben Amaro did not kick off his tenure very well with that signing. Makes no sense.
If Abreu winds up taking a 1-2 year deal that Ibanez contract will just continue to get worse and worse.
Someone call up Andy Pettitte and remind him there is a baseball season coming up.
“He’s fat,” said another.*
LMAO!!
The Caricature Hall of Fame has just retired the drawing of Mrs. Matsui.
Cant argue with Tex being a gamer. Who else in the last ump teen years turns off his cell phone when entering the stadium. All i can say is he is the opitime of professionalism(i know i killed the spelling).
Rumor heard on MLB-XM on way home from work was that Red Sox showing interest in Takashi Saito.
Scouts in D.R. are direct w/ player assessments.
Nick Green was signed to a minor league deal. WFAN update just said Milton Bradley to the Cubs.
**According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the A’s have made significant progress in their talks with Jason Giambi. He says a deal appears imminent.**
————
Giambi goes home!!
At least with Tex there, we wont need a-rod to slam 50 homeruns and 150 rbis. Two guys hitting 40-110 will be good.
The A’s fans HATE giambi. he is going to get the oakland boo bird from both of their fans.
“WFAN update just said Milton Bradley to the Cubs.”
we need middle infield help. what’s miguel cairo doing this year? maybe he wants to break the record for number of times he returns to play for the yankees? maybe?
Will the As fans stop booing Giambi now? lol
“According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the A’s have made significant progress in their talks with Jason Giambi. He says a deal appears imminent.”
Not sure what TOR is doing these days, but they should have been on this like white on rice. The Big G could have helped them with their offense, which is pitifully lacking. They have done nothing to improve their team so far. I guess they are content finishing ahead of BAL.
That Cubs outfield is going to really be ugly….Soriano, Pie and Bradley (if he even stays healthy enough to play defense)….the pitchers had better gas up their strikeout pitches.
They signed Green? I wonder what Cora is doing? How about him as a utility guy?
Saito….39 years old with a bad elbow. The Dodgers, knowing his medicals better than anybody, let him go.
Man, Theo seems to be really buying into the “we are really a small market team” nonsense his owner spews.
If the Red Sox have “so much talent” in their system, you don’t take a flyer on an injured guy like Saito. You plug in from within.
The Penny and Saito deals remind me of the Wade Miller signing of a few years ago. When the Red Sox signed Miller, Gammons and the Globe called it the “steal of the season” and, “he will be a difference maker”.
He was as much a difference maker as Carl Pavano.
The Red Sox are a major market team flush with cash. They don’t need to take flyers on projects. You don’t get extra wins tacked onto your total for moves like this.
Better them than the Yankees with those two guys.
Not sure what TOR is doing these days, but they should have been on this like white on rice. The Big G could have helped them with their offense, which is pitifully lacking. They have done nothing to improve their team so far. I guess they are content finishing ahead of BAL.
They lost AJ too, i dont think finishing 4th is a guarantee.
how about “The Tex”
Olney says Cubs gave Bradley 3/30.
Seems like too much to me.
I attended Giambi’s first game in Oakland as a Yankee. Very loud booing. During a lull in one of his at-bats, I yelled as loud as I could “Jason, we respect your choice!”
I got more laughs than things thrown at me, so I was happy.
Manny’s suitors are drying up faster than the economy. He really has only the Dodgers and what ever wild card decides to jump in maybe the Nats? He is gonna get A LOT less than he expected.
The Red Sox need someone of color not named Ortiz. ANYONE??? Bring in Kevin Garnett. It is starting to look like a Klan party in the boston clubhouse.
Jim Rome is burning !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOVxitMy47c
I’m sure that with the Toronto ownership (after Ted Rogers died) being in a state of flux (capacitor), it’s difficult to make monetary decisions, which is why Vernon Wells might be on the market.
“we need middle infield help. what’s miguel cairo doing this year? maybe he wants to break the record for number of times he returns to play for the yankees? maybe?”
That possition is already filled within. His name is Luis Sojo.
Laura,
Toronto is probably still paying the BIG HURTS contract and are a bit gun shy in signing a past his prime DH.
mattingly–23
tino– 24
Big G 25
Tex — 26
Makes sense doesnt it
“That Cubs outfield is going to really be ugly….Soriano, Pie and Bradley (if he even stays healthy enough to play defense)….the pitchers had better gas up their strikeout pitches.”
What are they doing with Fukidome? Is he going to be the 4th outfielder?
mattingly—23

Big G 25

May need to give something to Molina to get that #26. How bout part of his contract?

“The Red Sox need someone of color not named Ortiz. ANYONE??? Bring in Kevin Garnett. It is starting to look like a Klan party in the boston clubhouse.”
I’m not gonna touch that one. However Boston has always been a racially divided town and the team might still reflect that sentiment.
“That Cubs outfield is going to really be ugly….Soriano, Pie and Bradley”
No it’ll probably be worse than that. I think they are going to play Soriano LF, Bradley RF, and platoon Fukudome and Reed Johnson in CF.
That is an abysmal outfield.
Don’t like the moves the cubs have made at all. They’ve downgraded their bull pen (Gregg for Wood) and their infield (DeRosa for nothing and banking on Fontenot) in order to clear salary space for Bradley.
Bradely gets hurt they have nothing to show for their off season. They’ve placed a lot of eggs in his basket.
a little off-topic here, but I heard the Red Sox are close to signing the entire Japan WBC team. any merit to this rumor???
Fukudome will platoon in CF with Reed Johnson.
“I’m sure that with the Toronto ownership (after Ted Rogers died) being in a state of flux (capacitor), it’s difficult to make monetary decisions, which is why Vernon Wells might be on the market.”
I totally forgot that their owner died.
Would it be inappropriate of us to try and take advantage of the situation by picking their pockets and walking away with Alex Rios? He can play CF, can’t he?
Fukodome is supposed to be playing CF for the Cubs full-time. Pie is ticketed for AAA or trade bait. Soriano-Fukodome-Bradley is a pretty atrocious defensive outfield.
Toronto will not trade their best hitter to the Yankees/Sox or anyone they play more than 6 times a season.
SJ,
It reminds me of the Colon signing. With all this “throw against the wall and see what sticks” tactics the sox are implementing I expect the Sox to make a strong run at Zambrano. No not Carlos. I mean he did get traded for Kazmir so he must be good.
Hell maybe Pavano will finally play for his childhood team.
I can’t remember a team that made the playoffs having a worse off-season than the Cubs.
They traded DeRosa for projects and DeRosa was one of the main cogs in their success in 2008.
Their OF defense is going to be awful. Over/under 5 starts before we see Zambrano fighting in the dugout with one of his OF’s.
They lost their closer to free agency. I know they think Marmol can close and perhaps he can. He tailed off bigtime at the end of last year though.
I don’t understand what they are doing. Its almost as if they let a bad post-season cause panic throughout the organization.
They are a worse team than they were at the end of last season. Hard to figure them out.
“Fukudome will platoon in CF with Reed Johnson.”
I bet Reed sees more playing time. Lou seems totally over Fuku.
how is this for a deal?
Sign Manny, trade Manny to the Cubs for Soriano (who will come to NY and be the utility middle infielder. came up as a short stop and played 2b after knobby forgot how to throw to first base. if you can deal with the 75 errors he put up at 2b, why not?
“Toronto will not trade their best hitter to the Yankees/Sox or anyone they play more than 6 times a season.”
I was hoping that they would be so blinded by their grief that they wouldn’t notice. Oh, well. It was worth a shot.
Brian NYY January 5th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
“I think i read that he will be taking 25, since 23 is unofficially “retired”.”
michelle b. (X is the best letter in the alphabet!) :
23 has been OFFICIALLY retired for a while now. Do you not see the numbers in monument park?
WOW – can no one take a joke on this site – I really hate being attacked everytime i write something. Read the whole context of my post and you’ll see i was joking.
I think that Piniella and the Cubs are hoping that Fukedome decides to stay home or gets lost in the Tokyo International Airport and becomes the Japanese version of Tom Hanks in “The Terminal”.
“May need to give something to Molina to get that #26. How bout part of his contract?”
Part of his contract? I thought more like a signed bat and glove with do the trick. Maybe his cell phone to close the deal.
Laura, for a second I thought you were talking about Lou Reed. Maybe the Cubs are ready to take a walk on the wild side.
So far I’d say the Cubs, Phillies, Red Sox, Brewers and Angels have had the Bottom Five Worst Offseasons, in no particular order (granted, there is much time left, but either way, I think enough has already happened to put those guys out there as the worst hit by this Hot Stove season). Funny because 4 of them are supposed to be “big market” teams.
“Toronto will not trade their best hitter to the Yankees/Sox or anyone they play more than 6 times a season.”
I was hoping that they would be so blinded by their grief that they wouldn’t notice. Oh, well. It was worth a shot.
While we are at it, should try to sneak Halladay out of there too. We will dress up Ian Kennedy in a Jays uni and see if they notice.
Tex will probably wear #25. They aren’t holding that number out because of the Big G.
Cano is wearing #24. If they didn’t hold Tino’s number out, they certainly aren’t holding the Big G’s number.
At some point, they have to stop retiring/holding out numbers or they will run out of numbers.
Tex wore #25 in Anaheim. Give him that number and move on.
“May need to give something to Molina to get that #26. How bout part of his contract?”
Part of his contract? I thought more like a signed bat and glove with do the trick. Maybe his cell phone to close the deal.
Contract was a joke, but he has the money to spare poor Jose.
And with Bradley going to the Cubs there goes another team off the potential Abreu options. It just keeps getting worse for him as the days go by.
What, Jose Molina making $2 million a year makes him poor? That’s on par with saying that being a millionaire doesn’t mean you are rich anymore. Sorry that that has nothing to do with baseball, just kind of crazy to me considering no mere mortal has any money these days….
NYY is one of the few teams with a need and the money to take on Wells 18 mil a year contract for the next 6 years. To make things worse they collect Canadian dollars and pay in US dollars at 80 cents on the dollar.
No one believes they are holding 25. They think he wants a number with more significance.
11 is open i think. It is the lowest open number if you think Torre will be retired.
If Boston keeps picking up scrap heap types they’ll be hearing boo birds and seats emptying out early to catch trains on time.
No information saying John Henry was fleeced in Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi Scheme.
“If they didn’t hold Tino’s number out, they certainly aren’t holding the Big G’s number.”
Yep. Ruben Sierra took #24 the year after Tino left.
“While we are at it, should try to sneak Halladay out of there too. We will dress up Ian Kennedy in a Jays uni and see if they notice.”
Once he starts talking about how he’s not bothered by his bad start, that will be a dead giveaway.
I hope he goes with a low number like 11, 12 or 14. That would be different.

So there it is. If they aren’t going to retire Torres number then #6 would be perfect. If they give that to Tex then that would be a backhand shot at Torre IMO.
If not #6 then #26 makes the most sense but it will cost him with Molina but he could afford it. 1 season of paid Nutrasystem should do it.
The Dodgers have lost 8 players and have resigned one of them (Blake). I’d guess that will be Abrue’s new home, unless they resign Ramirez, in which case Abrue goes to SF or maybe Washington.
So I work in one of the back offices at MoMA.
Haven’t been in the office in over a month. I get in this morning to find a note on my desk from one of my coworkers who is also a bigtime Yankee fan.
It read: “M. and L. Teixera scheduled for private tour tomorrow evening”.
Would it be wrong of me to quickly have a custom jersey made up and wear it into work tomorrow? I’m not even supposed to be in the office tomorrow. I’m just gonna show up anyways.
“I hope he goes with a low number like 11, 12 or 14. That would be different.”
#11 is taken by Brett Gardner.
Not sure that Gardner would be in a position to argue over uniform numbers.
Gardner might not even make the team. If so, a signed broken bat should put an end to that or Tex signing Gardners glove. Id let Gardner choose one.
Zach in Port Jeff: so can you get me a good deal on some Muji merchandise???
I teach until 12:15. Guess who’s letting her class out early.
gardner should have whatever number he wants because he is better then Tex
Nick,
I guess getting a good deal on Muji merchandise does not conflict with its central ethos.
Wait a sec, I forget what the exact philosophy behind Muji is again.
I’m sure it’ll be ok though.
Things may get tighter even than they already are in Minnesota. Twins owner, Carl Polhad had died. They’ll need to find an owner.
Correction: ***Twins owner Carl Pohlad, age 93***
Tex was #23 on the Rangers, #24 on the Braves, and then #25 on the Angels. My money is on him stealing Molina’s #26. If Jose can get a new car out of it or something, i think he will be down to change #’s…
That’s at least 4 teams that will be up for new ownership. It may be time to start thinking about contraction of teams again.
Muji = no brand.
But I think its exact philosophy as it applies to me is to sell simple items at high markup to gullible foreigners.
There are actually a few particular Muji items I really want, but MoMa doesn’t carry them (and neither does Muji USA), so I’ll have to wait until my next trip across the Pacific or until someone over there can help (I have a few Muji wardrobe items from my last trip to Taiwan).
But thanks for the offer.
I think he will just take 25, no matter what number he chooses I am so excited to see him put on the pinstripes tomorrow.

SJ,
“It reminds me of the Colon signing. With all this “throw against the wall and see what sticks” tactics the sox are implementing I expect the Sox to make a strong run at Zambrano.”
S.O.S
I entirely understand that it is easy to take shots at Colon. I confess I have done it myself.
When the Sox signed him last year they were not expecting miracles, but the fact is he did pitch a few decent games for a very low salary.
In fact Colon had exactly the same number of victories last year that Igawa, Kennedy, Hughes, Aceves, Bruney had all together combined!
Granted this year’s Yankee pitching staff will be very different but I think last years represented the saying of “throw against the wall and see what sticks.”
Nick,
I would see if Muji or MoMa will buy you Generation duo t-shirt idea. Im calling as we speak for the
Numero Uno
Gaun Solo
The ONE
Then there was One
Hugh the One
pattens.
Thats right.
Muji…”The Brandless Brand”. Very expensive stuff. Their furniture makes me want to go out and buy a really cool iMac (without the Apple logo ofcourse)…and a futon too!
I forgot what his name is, but their curator is always doing stuff in MoMA…Japanese guy based out of Berlin these days.
S.o.S.: pessimism may pay off for you in the end, but I’m sticking with “Generation Just Us Two” for as long as I can.
i was in gregs blog and sumbody said that they heard that the yankees are ready to sign oliver perez
he supposedly heard it on sny
Carl Pohlad got his start in business by foreclosing farms during the Great Depression and made a fortune from it.
ray,
I take great offense to you putting Igawas name on that list. Didnt he have the most wins in AAA or recieved the AAA cy young? Im sure Colon wasnt even close to sniffing that.
I think its o.k. to take a risk on a player for a backup plan. Just in case you have injuries during the year and hoping you can catch lightning in a bottle. But when you are signing those same players to help NOW,then it shooting yourself in the foot. Colon was supposidly not hitting 90 when he was trying out with teams. All of the sudden he regains most of his velocity and as expected breaks down. I guess you got what you paid for him. I see Penny as a similiar situation but more expensive. It it works Theo looks like a genious. If not, he will be excused by everyone in the media because of his championships, unlike Cashmans risks that ended up mistakes. I dont go to Sox boards to see what reaction you guys have with those types of signings.
“The Dodgers have lost 8 players and have resigned one of them (Blake). I’d guess that will be Abrue’s new home, unless they resign Ramirez, in which case Abrue goes to SF or maybe Washington.”
Dodgers did resign Furcal. Wild wild NL West still wide open.
Lots of DH type/faux outfielders left-Manny, Abreu, Dunn, Anderson, Floyd.
Wonder where Orlando Hudson will end up?
Any interest in Alex Cora or Jerry Hairston for utility role?
As for contracting teams-not such a bad idea to shorten the season and not play the WS in November.
Here’s agreat story about a writer who’s a fan reliving Larson’s perfect game, for another reason. This is the feeling towards a player that fans my could feel and experience, but, not explain why. You had to see him to believe it. You could never explain it to non-believers. If you idolized him, no explaination was necessay. If you loathed him, no explaination was satisfactory. Enjoy.

Thanks for the link. Really enjoyed the article as Mantle was my idol growing up, in PA. Used to drive with family to Baltimore to see the Yankees play, and I believe it was in August of 1964 when Mantle, who came up to pinch hit after coming off the DL, hit a homerun against the Orioles. He not only got an ovation when he came up to bat, but a standing ovation for the homerun, which he described in his book, having tears in his eyes while rounding the bases. The Oriole fans, like Red Sox hated the Yankees, but this ovation was a testament for the respect the fans had for one of the greatest players in the game.
“The A’s fans HATE giambi. he is going to get the oakland boo bird from both of their fans.”
They should love him – he had his best chemically enhanced years with them, then handed the bill to the Yankees.
I don’t get the fans who hate former players. You didn’t see Yankee fans booing Tino Martinez after he left and was on another team.
I’m sure Yankee fans have booed some former-teammate. I’m not syaing they don’t. I just don’t recall it, nor do I understand when anyone does.
Andrea- Tino was different. Yanks kicked him to curb to sign Giambi. Giambi came up with the A’s and blew them off for the highest bidder. It wasn’t like Tino wanted to leave.

You’re most welcome Trader.
I went to a couple of autograph signings of his, and standing thre watching 45-50 yar old men with their teenage sons in tow, the guys in expensive suits be utterly speechless when asking for his autograph and they had tears rolling own their cheek. I was 18 and in Vietnam when he announced his retirement. I read it in the Stars And Stripes at the same time I heard it on AFVN radio (Armed Forces Vietnam Radio). I started crying, knowing that I missed his last season of playing baseball…even though he was no longer putting up the numbers….he was still MICKEY MANTLE.
Celerino: I guess so. The Tino example was the first one I thought of. I don’t know. Giambi spent his best years, essentially, with the A’s. I understand it’s fun to boo folks on other teams, but I wouldn’t get it if they booed him if he came back.
Did I read that correctly – Carl Pohlad has died?
Mantle was my father’s favorite player.

I don’t get the fans who hate former players. You didn’t see Yankee fans booing Tino Martinez after he left and was on another team.
I’m sure Yankee fans have booed some former-teammate. I’m not syaing they don’t. I just don’t recall it, nor do I understand when anyone does.
————————————————————
No, you don’t see Yankee fans boo former players. They save it for guys that are playing for the Yanks now….guys who were better than the ones who left.

Yes, he died tis morning at age 93.
Yankees would make more money if they had names on the back cause then everyones Giambi Jerseys wouldnt become Tiexiera jerseys and there Cano becomes Clemens then Nady ect. I bought a phil Hughes autentic 34 Jersey 5 days before marte became number 34 now i have a Burnett Jersey.

Boros is on MLB Hot Stove right now in case anyone waats to see
Philly papers are reporting that Pat the Bat turned down a 2 year 22 million dollar deal around Halloween time. I know he will be fine in Tampa but I think he wanted to stay in Philly. Guess his agent really read the market wrong andcost him 6 mill.
Yes Phlard has passed away. Great business man who made millions but never spent much on his team
Kadoosh!!!
That’s the sound of Manny flushing 20M down the drain. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
The only question now is, will he be the Barry Bonds of 08′. No team, no contract, no dough!
GreenBeret: Yeah, I have HUGE problems with that. Despite the craptastic play of some people, I have never ONCE booed a Yankee in my life.
Andrea,
Giambi won’t get booed as he seemed to become a fan favorite despite being a ‘roid user. I think it depends on the player and how he leaves and the circumstances. Abreu wouldn’t get booed after playing hard for the time he was here and wanting to stay. But what if A-Rod and Boras try some Manny-esque power play? Or Pavano returns as a Blue Jay or something? it could happen in the Bronx.
Aaron–I’m willing to bet people buy the tshirts (with names) more often than jerseys. Jerseys aren’t exactly disposable. I never got rid of my nameless #21 jersey, even when LaTroy Hawkins started wearing 21.
There are afew ex Yankees who deserve boos. The Jeff Weavers, Carl Pavanos and Kenny Loftons
Boros when asked if when he puts out a number like 16 mill for Lowe if it hurts his negiotiating power responded by saying. “We never are the ones that put out numbers they come from others”
Yep thats true he just has Heyman do it for him.
Also as far as Boros is concerned he and Alex they talk regularly (in fact spoke this AM) and contrary to what ALex said or didnt say it was Boros who negotiated the deal last year and they talked regularly throughout the process. Reynolds pressed him on this and Boros said basically said there were a lot of mis-reporting on that issue.

————————————————————
Let me guess? Rodriguez and Cano? People shoul try naming a better 3rd baseman in history, much less than Yankee history. As far as Cano…there aren’t 6 better 2nd basemen in baseball.
Andrea
Yea your probly right i have only bought one Authentic jersey in my life. I had a Jeter when i was alot younger but not authentic and i had a non authentic Sheffield. But the player tees i have had alot of Jeter, Posada, Pavano, Tino, Damon, Pettitte, Wang it goes on and on lol.
Oh I also had a blank jersey i had a guy put Sojo 14 on it for me.
Aaron -
There’s a right way, a wrong way, and a Yankee way. The Yankees have never had names on the back of uniforms. Far more than the majority of Yankee fans know their players almost by the way they walk, throw, swing a bat, etc.
Brad
I agree im not saying I want names on the back I would hate that im just saying that it could produce more money.
The difference is when a player leaves the Yankees its because either they are past their prime or we replaced them with someone better. Its like dumping a girl for a hotter one. Who cares if you run into her again. The jealousy will be coming from her side. Now if you down graded its a different story.
For the fans that remember Ricky Henderson leaving. Did we boo him? I remember that supposid F.U. gesture he did at home plate but i cant remember much else.
Ken Burns’ Baseball is now showing on MLB. If you haven’t seen it…please, tape it and don’t miss it.
GreenBeret: I also have a problem even when people boo Pavano, Farnsworth, Igawa, etc. I mean, I scream at the TV whenever Carl Pavano is seen in pinstripes, but I wouldn’t boo him in person. It’s just not how I roll.
Great news. Burns is updating his Series this year, picking up fom 1992 through this year.
Aaron–I’m not sure the Yankees really NEED more money, do they?
“There are afew ex Yankees who deserve boos. The Jeff Weavers, Carl Pavanos and Kenny Loftons”
This could be a very interesting list. How about neon
Deion Sanders. I hated him as a Yankee.
Sorry…my mistake…Ken Burns’s Baseball is playing every Tuesday at 8:00 PM EST.
“Great news. Burns is updating his Series this year, picking up fom 1992 through this year.”
That will be awesome… I’ll watch all the way up to 2003. IIRC, Burns is a big Sox fan… the last few years of that documentary can get awful ugly for those of us who hate the Sox.
The series is awesome… I got the DVD set a few years ago, and every now and again I’ll pop one in and catch up on some real history.
Andrea
They will if they want to sign me I hit .432 last year.
Tarheelyank
I would never boo Deon Sanders im a cowboys fan.
Um…That chick broadcaster on MLB makes Kim Jones look like Kim Kardashian.
“This could be a very interesting list. How about neon
Deion Sanders. I hated him as a Yankee.”
I’ll offically cast my vote for Kevin Brown.
Oh yeah, throw Kenny Rogers onto that list, too.
LMAO…Drury and Mara talk Yankees in the Rangers locker room:
http://zellspinstripeblog.com/.....x-rivalry/
This list i would add
Chris Widger (he was a dick to fans when we were trying to get and autograph)
Latroy Hawkins
I remember when the original Pudge got in a fight with Deion (at the stadium) for not running out a pop-up or something. Told him it wasn’t the Yankee way. It has to be the only time Yankee fans ever cheered Fisk.
Why did L. Hawkins deserve to be boo’d? Was it the performance of the whole #21 thing (which couldn’t have been handled worse)? If it was a performance based booing, then most of the team I grew up watching deserved to hear it. Matt Nokes, Kevin Maas, Alvaro Espinoza (but he did have a cool looking glove), etc.
Does anybody know whether or not the Teix press conference is going to be available on the internet? I won’t be near a television but will likely have access to a computer.
This is why im the better Aaron, the other Aaron’s a cowboys fan.. Cowboys and Yankees?? come on, dude.. Front runner?
If the season started tomorrow who are the top five teams in baseball:
Yankees
Tampa
Red Sox
Mets
Phillies
Prime Nine on MLB…tonight….best center fielders in history.
Is it just me or does anyone else dislike Harold Reynolds in his role on MLB?
He interrupts too much and makes incorrect statements and talks with his hands too much.
lol, he’s bothering me 5 days in.
Number 9. Kirby Puckett….WHAT?
Im still a pretty damn good Aaron
Aaron ( The better Aaron)
You get my vote. Cowboys and Yankees that’s as bad as Patriot’s and Yankees. Do we know any patriot fans?

Audio should be on wfan, try the MLB site to see if the video is there as well.
1 Yanks
2 Sox
3 Rays
4 Phils
5 Dodgers (if they re-sign Manny)
5 Angels (if they sign Manny)
5 Indians (darkhorse)
8. Jim Edmonds.
Thanks for the ideas Ray.
Does anybody here have any idea who’s going to be on Trenton this year?
Has the Thunder’s roster been announced yet?
Freddie Lynn better be in the top 9
Tarheelyank
I am a UNC fan
Tom, pretty much last year’s Tampa Yanks High A team and maybe a player or two from Charleston
1- Willie Mays, 2- Joe Dimaggio, 3- Mickey Mantle, 4- Ty Cobb, 5- Duke Snider
Then ?
Puckett, Edmonds were 8 and 9
Vin – No Mets.
I think they will be pretty good this year with the bullpen additions.
Number 7. Duke Snyder
Aaron.
There may be some hope for you. Are you in mourning today? I cant watch ESPN. It’s almost as bad as when the Yankees lose.
Do these guys make it?
Ken Griffey Jr.? Torii Hunter(mostly his glove)?
Thanks, GB.
So, Do you think Yount is going to be on the list?
6. Ken Griffey, Jr.
I already watched the First Inning last night and I’m in love, but then, I am a romantic for baseball; I think it’s the most perfect game ever invented
More details on the Tenth Inning (Burns):
Wow – Ken Burns says they are working on 10th inning for his Baseball……..Cool!
It will include: Braves/Yanks dominance, strikes, steroids, Sid Bream getting his hand on the plate in the Pirates/Braves classic playoff game, Red Sox…….it sounds like it’s going to be fabulous!
I dont think so Tom. Mantle, Mays, DiMaggio, Speaker, Cobb
Richie Ashburn?
Aaron
You are a front runner
Anyone planning to watch the clip shows and the other programs they have on? They’ve got something called Prime on tonight (I’m taping the first 1/2 hour to watch later, will watch the next one at 8:30 EST), which is a countdown of the 9 best…..whatevers (tonight CFers, HRs) in baseball history. Tuesday is Baseball, Wednesday is Seasons, where they focus on particular seasons. That is going to be phenomenal.
I’m going to try and catch the HS show later – soooo much information packed into that hour.

———-
Tommy Agee???? lol
GB7, I rememeber seeing the Mick hanging around the batting cages during spring training and just be in awe of him…..We grunts would never even think of approaching him….I also recall a ST game vs. The Twins, Mantle, Billy and Whitey just bs’ing and laughing their behinds off….One can only imagine the tales they were reliving…
Tarheelyank
Yea I havent watched much ESPN at all today. At least my friend shave stopped blowing up my cell about it.
Joe D 5?, ok Mays, Mantle, Cobb but who else above Joe D?
5. DiMaggio
Tex’s introduction will cap a wonderful off-season.
4. Tris Speaker
I wouldn’t put speaker above Joe D and Griffey
Has anyone read the following books?:
* Matty, An American Hero by Ray Robinson
* The Old Ballgame by Frank Deford
I’m really interested in Christy Mathewson – for some reason, I always have been (a real hero at the beginning of the century, not just for his pitching prowess). I ordered these books from Amazon and should be getting them tomorrow. The latter book is based on an article that Deford wrote for SI in 2003 about Mathewson and McGraw…. If anyone has read these books, I’d love to hear your thoughts
3. Mantle
Are we still talking about the number choice for Tex?
Aaron
yeah it sucks. At least it wasn’t dook.
Duke fans = Sox fans
So im about to watch my longhorns play. Just thought i would throw this out there. 9 of the top 25 teams have been upset by lower seeds or unseeded teams. Thats not including unranked teams beating others with better records.
Hope Texas doesnt follow suit.
No, Betsy…sorry to say that I haven’t. They sound like my kind of books. Thanks for the heads up.
The Mets never seem to impress me… not sure why.
Putz is coming off a bad year. If they go with Castillo at 2nd, then their bottom 3rd of the order is very poor (Schneider plus pitcher). They have 2 huge holes in the rotation right now. Weak rotation, short bullpen, an an awful bottom of the order tells me they’re probably not one of the 5 best teams in MLB.
2. Ty Cobb
“I dont think so Tom. Mantle, Mays, DiMaggio, Speaker, Cobb”
hmmm..This wouldnt happen to be a rerun gb would it?
1. Willie Mays
No, S.o.S. first time run on this show.
Can’t believe that Puckett was chosen over Freddie Lynn
That list is temporary pending Brett Gardner’s career.
“That list is temporary pending Brett Gardner’s career.”
And Orlando Hudson’s possible move to Center.
Puckett at least in the Hall.
Is Edmonds a HOFer?
“No, S.o.S. first time run on this show.”
In that case good job calling the top 5. I have to say though you have sort of an advantage. Youv seen them all play before.
can’t believe that Puckett was picked over Freddie Lynn
9 greatest home runs
9. Chris Chambliss in 1976
8. Aaron Boone in 2003
I pretty sure GB was childhood friends with Abner Doubleday
lol nick. If Bubba didnt make the list. What makes you think Gardner will? Bubba beats him in everything including the coolest name competition.
Now Ajax making it is a given.

LMAO. Give me a few minutes and I’ll think up something nasty to say to you.
I wouldn’t have guessed Edmonds would be on that list… who got snubbed – Fred Lynn???
Ok guys rapid fire question!!! Top 9 all-time Yankee Homeruns ready GO. see if we can come up with 9
7. Fisk in 1975
Everyone will see Tex is gonna put on a pinstriped 25 jersey tomorrow. He is a very predictable guy he’ll stay with whats comfortable.
Tino and Scott in ‘01
Boone in ‘03
Leyritz off Wohlers in ‘96
Chamblis in ‘76
Bubba Crosy is sadly penalized because the height of his career predates the Lohud Yankee blog comments section, so nobody was ever “bubbaisgod” when it would have mattered.
Bill Mazeroski, Joe Carter, Bucky Dent (probably not), Ruth calling his shot…
Good start TOM. gotta add REG-GIE
But do his 3 in the WS all count?
9. Chambliss
8. Boone
7. mantle’s shot off of the facade
6. Ruth’s ‘32 called shot
5. Jeter’s November homer
4. Dent’s ‘78 homer
3. Maris’ 61’st
2. Jackson’s third homer of game 7, 1977
1. Ruth’s 60th
#9 Molina closes Yankee Stadium
#8 Jeter Opens new Yankee Stadium
Top 6
1- Thompson
2- Carter
3- mazeroski
4- Gibson
5- Reggie detroit all star game ?
6- Aaron 715
F Bonds
MM i say we count his 3rd and final one. Id go with Ruth’s homerun to “open” The House that Ruth Built
6. Ruth’s called shot
1. Bucky Bleepin Dent
2. Aaron Bleepin Boone
3. Brocious
4. Jeter
5. Tino
6. Reggie
7. Brocious vs. Hoffman
8. Catcher that got arrested(cant believe iv drawn a blank)
I hope im not being too bias
I was at a game where Mel Hall hit a walk off against the Indians. Does that count?
5. Hank Aaron’s 715
“Good start TOM. gotta add REG-GIE”
That’s where it gets complicated… can you have the 3-homer game count, or does it have to be a singular blast?
I’d say Ruth calling his shot, Bucky Dent, Giambi’s grandslam in the rain against the twins…
Mattingly in ‘95 vs the M’s. For sentimental reasons.
“Hold on to the Roof!”
Tom I was just writing that. I was there and That to me was the greatest Yankee moment for me ever. I cant be bias but thats #1 to me..
4. Gibson’s homer in 1988 Series
Here is the video Donnie:
http://vids.myspace.com/index......d=43452641
Bobby Thompson has got to be on that list. I always loved that Pujols shot off Lidge… the timing was unbelivable.
3. Joe Carter’s game 6 WS winner
I was there to Donnie Baseball, member it was my BIRTHDAY!!!!!!lol
Tom I was 13 and I was crying Ill always remember that day for as long as I live I still have the Mattingly jersey I bought that day there
O ya Aaron HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the greatese brother any could ask for!!! Your the best. Whats ur Yankee HR moment
2-mazz
1- Bobby
You guys aren’t in mid-season form, no one has said “how about that time Arod hit that solo shot to give the Yankees a 7-run lead vs. the Royals in May ‘07?”
2. Mazeroski’s walkoff in 1960 WS
I was 15. I wasn’t there; however I broke my couch from jumping up and down on it. My father never yelled at me for that. He told me some things are worth breaking a couch over.
Thats one of them. Funny thing. That was my little brothers bday that day and in 1991 when the GMEN won the superbowl on Jan.27th that was my bday. so we have had good luck in a way
1. Thompson’s ‘51 walkoff
That moment is up there, cant argue with getting beer poored all over you, and yelling at Jay Buhner the whole game. haha.. IDK I have a few moments, the game where I saw A-Rod hit an upper deck home run against Livan Hernandez and the D’Backs, and/or Giambi’s winning home run in the 8th the game we went too…
“The yankee’s decision not to offer Abreu arbitration looks better and better.”
I am not so sure about it.
The market has fallen now.
But when they had to accept/reject arbitration, things looked still bright and that is the reason so many players rejected arbitration. Most likey, Abrue also would have rejected arbitration.
On the otherhand, I can understand Cash’s caution not to take any risk at all.
Whats Sterling call going to be for Tex?
Nick in SF I’m counting on you, for something good.
Tarheelyank- Not trying to 1 up Nick here. I’d say that Sterling will think of something in spanish(because of Tex’s Portuguese heritage) something along the lines of “Un Bombera from Mark Teixeira”.
very good Al. LOL
Just a heads up for everyone….MLB Network is showing the press conference tomorrow at 1 ET/12 CT. I’m assuming it’s on YES as well.
I cant believe that Giambi’s game winning homer in the pouring rain didnt make the list. Some say that was the day when he became a Yankee. What would Giambi be without that shot?
“Hope a reporter doesn’t throw a shoe at Tiexeria when he is at the podium.”
Good one James 3D. Maybe a Boston area reporter will show up and oblige.
GB 7
And just think, the ballplayer formerly known as Andruw Jones coulda made that center fielders list if only he would have been made to eat my ex-wife’s cooking.
I actually almost never hear Sterling’s calls, so I’m not as up on his style as you guys. But Al, wouldn’t a call to honor Tex’s Portugese heritage be in, you know, Portugese?
I think “It’s a Teix-message from Teixeira!!!” has been suggested already.
How about: “On your Mark, get set, gone!!!”
How about Tex Marks the spot for STerling’s call
Regarding our pitching, Yanks should forget re-signing Andy Pettitte and go after Oliver Perez, the Mets´lefty, younger and proved in NY.
I would like to add that it was the first and only time Giambi’s wet hair look actually fit the moment.
Teix puts his Mark on that one!!
Al from BK
Hey Al maybe you should copyright it. Get some tickets or something.
Nick in SF
XM radio you get to hear him for all the home games.
“How about: “On your Mark, get set, gone!!!”
I lol’d.
“But Al, wouldn’t a call to honor Tex’s Portugese heritage be in, you know, Portugese?”
I know Nick however I know absolutely no Portuguese. I am semi-versed in Spanglish however
On the booing issue, I can’t imagine a player responding positively to being booed by his own fans. The only possible result is a player begins to press. That, my friends, is what we don’t need. Baseball is a difficult game to play under any circumstance. All players have bad games, series and months. We should support them not hinder them. I will now get down from the soap box.
“Al from BK
Hey Al maybe you should copyright it. Get some tickets or something.”
I like this I’ll give CBS a call in the morning and see if I can extort them for some slogan rights lol.
“How about Tex Marks the spot for STerling’s call”
My guess was close to that. Tex Marks the Shot. Change the Tex to X and it could be used for Nady too.
Mark that on your scorecard! After a HR. Sounds good.
I made a nice sign for Xavier Nady if i go to a game id tell u guys but dont want my idea stolen
I usually watch the games on DTV. But whenever to do listen on the radio I hear this strange other voice babbling incoherently along with Sterling. Oh my goodness gracious!
“I usually watch the games on DTV. But whenever to do listen on the radio I hear this strange other voice babbling incoherently along with Sterling. Oh my goodness gracious!”
Yeah she’s a pain in …..
Sterling: Another Blast from Sexy Texy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can see Cashman at the press confrence Tmw. And now I would like to welcome Sexy Texy!!!!! LOL
Maybe Cash can wear Giambi’s golden thong when he introduces Sexy Texy LOL
Enorme bomba Mark Teixeira!!!!
Well, after being in the booth for that long and under the circumstances I can see where he might view Texy as sexy. lol.
Sorry if this has been asked. But if I was going to DVR the press conference. What is my best bet? YES, ESPN, ESPN News, MLB Net?
Just wondering.
So will tomorrow truly be the last great event at the Old Yankee STadium. That is how they opened the Burnett, CC one saying that it was a great wayto close the stadium yet here we are once again. Is this really it.
Al from BK-
Al I looked it up. Bomb in Portugese is Bomba. It works. Now we just have to fit in Sexy Texy.
Whos got the hotter wife TEX or SWISHER or Damon or Jorge WOW we got some hot Yankee wifes
I nominate Mrs. Aceves with special consideration for Mrs. Matsui, who can be folded up and put inside your wallet.
” Mrs. Matsui, who can be folded up and put inside your wallet.”
Wow. She’s flexable. Is she a gymnast?
haha Where would Madonna go on the list??? Id say single A..haha
You can DVR it on any of those, Id say YES, the MLB, because ESPN may not show all of what you want. This is also the first look we will get on MLB network for an interview so who knows how they will cover it. Could be really good or not so. So Id go with YES to be safe
At the time of his signing, I thought Swisher said he had a girlfriend. So either his wife is a more open minded person than I am or he’s not married.
It is his Girlfriend. Sorry I mis quoted. We have some hot Yankee significant others is that better for you.
I know everyone wants to sign Andy Pettitte for the #4 spot in the rotation, but if he continues to turn his back on the $10+ mil being offered, i am of the thought of Jon Garland. His numbers are similar and i don’t think he’s looking at $10 mil. I haven’t seen his name mentioned much or what kind of deal he’s looking for, but he’ll give you 180-200 innings, pitch to a +/- 4 ERA and will be on the plus side of .500 winning pct. Having another lefty would be nice, but Garland, IMO would be a good fall back.
Matsui introduces wife:
http://assets.nydailynews.com/.....i_wife.jpg
Matsui doing that has to be one of the most bizare thing ive ever seen of.
She seems kind of “one dimensional” to me.
Steve I understand what your saying and you make good points I just feel the Yanks want and will wait for Andy for reasons like they want to be loyal to him and let him pitch in the new stadium, plus I think they want 2 lefties in the rotation and are waiting to see if he takes the 10 mil before they up it to 12 or so
Sneaky Pete. New Post——
Donnie
I am an Andy fan and wouldlove to see him return, but, i don’t think it’s the Yankees who should be showing the loyalties this time, they did that last year in providing him he support over the Mitchell report. I feel that it should be Andy showing the loyalty this time around.
The corner OF price has been somewhat set with the Burrell and Bradley signings, but that second tier ptiching market hasn’t been established yet and myguess is that is adding to any delay on both sides.

Matsui’s wife is flat………….
